On January 31st, 2008, Daniel Porter talked about Reverse Mortgages. The reverse mortgage is becom-ing a popular option for seniors who want to main-tain a certain life style, and still leave a legacy.

A reverse mortgage means you can receive your money several ways entailing a growing line of credit, a lump sum cash pay out up front, monthly payments, or any combination of the three.

Seniors do need to weigh their options including renting, selling, borrowing against equity, or taking a reverse mortgage.

Porter also talked about the basics of reverse mort-gage, including: Understanding of your obligation for any fees, Knowing about your resources e.g. checking with HUD, AARP or National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association; Applications and Disclosure; Mortgage Processing fees , closing costs, Disbursement and Repayment….

Further resources can be found: www.aarp.org or www.reversemortgage.com

Dr. Meredith Moon was our speaker on February 7th. She spoke on the subject of Telepathic Intuition.

The word “Telepathy” comes from the Greek words "tele" meaning distant, and "pathos” meaning feeling. It means literally distant feeling.

The word was coined by Frederick Meyers in 1886 and he defined it as "the communication of impressions of any kind from one mind to another independently of t h e r e c o g n i z e d c h a n n e l s o f s e n s e " .

Meredith gave examples of telepathy which were mystical and interesting. She believes that humans can be very aware of events which take place many miles away via intuition and even through our dreams. She emphasized the importance of acting on those mo-ments of telepathy when we are given messages about another person or an event we intuit.

BlueEarth Biofuels Embracing the Environment Changing EnergyDane Kane and Landis Maez shared with us information about the BlueEarth Maui Bio-

diesel Project on February 14th.

It is a project to help develop clean, locally-produced energy for the people of Maui. It will be the first biodiesel plant in the Pacific capable of achieving quality biodiesel. The plant will be lo-cated at Maui Electric’s Waena site. The mission of the project is to:

Create a viable market to stimulate local bio-crop investment and development; expand local agricul-ture; provide local guarantees for long term con-tracts to grow crops; provide employment and ca-reer security; break the tie to oil prices; reduce toxic pollutants…. “It’s good for Maui, It’s good for Hawaii, It’s good for Our Children.”

Cindy Kline, Deputy Director of Women Helping Women and a survivor of domestic violence, shared with us details of her organization on February 21st.

Approximately 15,000 calls were received through their hotline in 2007. Compared with 12,000 calls that were received in 2006 this is an alarming trend. Calls were received from families, churches, work-places…and overwhelmingly 94% of victims are women, though it happens to same sex partners as well.

Attacks take many forms ranging from physical and mental abuse, stalking, attacks on property and pets, and using children as an emotional weapon.

Women Helping Women provides emergency shelter & programs for victims of domestic violence. Their mission is to end domestic violence through advocacy, education and prevention and to offer safety, support and empowerment to women and children, and all victims of domestic violence. Services are available to anyone who is in need without any limitations on their background.

“It is right to say “No!” to domestic violence.”
