Morgan ATLANTA—For years, Andrea Kerr Conley has been a fan of Oprah Winfrey. And for years, she has signed up online to try and get free tickets to go on The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago. The South Atlanta High School teacher not only got to go on the show recently, she and her sister, Shantia Kerr, hit the jackpot: They were picked to join Oprah and 300 other “ultimate” viewers on an 8-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Australia a few days before Christmas. The two sisters are now looking forward to a recap of “Oprah’s Ultimate Australian Adventure,” which will be televised in mid-January. So is their proud mom, Geraldine Kerr, who kept track of the odyssey on the internet at her Stockbridge home. And although Geraldine Kerr didn’t get to go on the trip, she did get to go on the show and sit in on a separate taping a day before her daughters won their trip. “People tell you to dream big. You never think to dream that big,” said Andrea Conley, 34, who teaches health and P.E. at South Atlanta High. “When we won the trip, I couldn’t tell my mom at first because of confidentiality rules. They told us: Do not tell anyone, especially your mother. She had to find out when Oprah made the announcement that the special audience of ultimate viewers were going on the trip. “I felt really blessed that my sister asked me to go with her on the trip. But then again, I am her sister. Who else was she going to take on a trip like that?’ said Shantia Kerr, 31. “What about me?” mom Geraldine Kerr joked. “I still feel blessed, too. I knew it would be life changing. I felt as if I went vicariously.” Conley said those who were selected for the trip had to write letters that impressed Oprah’s production team enough with their stories to select them. Said Conley: “There were people who had overcome some tough obstacles like cancer and other things. I wrote about how I was inspired by Oprah’s Legends’ Ball in which she honored trailblazers such as Dorothy Heights, Coretta Scott King and Maya Angelou. That ball reminded me of my grandmother and the legacy of education that she left. It made me deeply examine myself over the kind of legacy that I want to leave.” Kerr, who teaches as a college professor, said the trip gave them both a chance to become friends with people from around the country. “That was one of the best parts of the trip— making so many new friends,” Kerr said. “The other part, obviously, was Oprah. When she spoke to us as a group, she was so inspiring. She encouraged us to live out our dreams.” So, what did the two sisters do while they were in Australia? Lots. They took in cultural sites, enjoyed Australia’s people, and ate seafood and lots of fresh vegetables. You’ll have to watch The Oprah Show in mid month—around Jan. 17— to learn more. The show is co-produced by Halftime Live, LLC (based in Atlanta and DeKalb County), and Columbia Artists Management, Inc.

Tickets for DRUMLine Live are available for $13 to $63, plus fees. Tickets can be purchased online at www.

Ninth annual Totes 2 Tots suitcase drive set for foster children

Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) will host the ninth annual Totes 2 Tots suitcase drive for foster children on Jan. 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Twenty-two GCS offices across Georgia will participate in the drive Friday, January 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Totes 2 Tots delivers new or nearly new backpacks and kid-sized suitcases to foster children in Georgia—from infants to teenagers—many of whom must shuffle their belongings from home to home in garbage bags during frequent relocations. The annual volunteer event was first launched by GCS in 2003 and has collected and distributed more than 22,000 bags. The 2010 event amassed more than 4,200 bags. Originally held on Martin Luther King Day as a way to honor Dr. King’s vision and give back to the community, Totes is now held on the Friday before the MLK Holiday as a kickoff to a weekend of service.

“Totes 2 Tots captures the spirit of Georgia Cancer Specialists and our practice-wide commitment to helping others,” said GCS President and interim CEO Dr. J. Bancroft Lesesne said. “By hosting the event to launch the Martin Luther King weekend, we believe that we honor Dr. King’s dream as we provide tangible reminders to the foster children in our state that someone cares about them.”

To participate, simply drop off a new or nearly new suitcase during the drive at the nearest Georgia Cancer Specialists office.

GCS partners with the Division of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS) to distribute the bags in the counties in which they’re collected.

“The Department of Human Services/DFCS is grateful for this initiative, which has truly been wonderful for our kids in care over the last eight years,” said Katherine Herren, DFCS Deputy Director. Because of the generosity of the community, we were able to honor our graduating youth in foster care by presenting

those off to college with new three-piece luggage sets. ”

In 2005, WSB-TV recognized the importance of the drive and agreed to support it as a part of its Family 2 Family Project. This will be the seventh year that GCS and WSB-TV have partnered for Totes 2 Tots.

Georgia Cancer Specialists is a Top 10 private cancer practice in the U.S. and a leader in advanced cancer treatment and research. The practice supports more than 200,000 patient visits each year.

DeKalb County officials for the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Scott Candler branch. The ceremony was held Dec. 17 at the site of the branch’s new location, 1917 Candler Road, near the intersection of Candler Road and Northview Avenue in Decatur.

Kaiser Permanente to open facilities in Conyers and Fayetteville

Kaiser Permanente will invest more than $4.6 million to open two new medical offices in Rockdale and Fayette counties.

The Conyers Medical Office, Kaiser Permanente’s first site in Rockdale County, will be located at 1478 Dogwood Drive, Suites B and C. The Fayetteville Medical Office at 101 Banks Station will be Kaiser’s first location in Fayette.

“Expanding to Conyers and Fayetteville allows us to better serve our growing Kaiser Permanente membership in and around those communities,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, president of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “We look forward to providing quality, affordable health care to the residents of Rockdale and Fayette counties for many years to come.”

Physicians of The Southeast Permanente Medical Group will provide internal medicine and pediatric services for Kaiser Permanente members at the new locations. Each medical office will have 8 to 12 health care professionals on staff and the capacity to serve 10,000 members.

The 6,700-square-foot Conyers Medical Office and the 6,400-square-foot Fayetteville Medical Office will include exam and procedure rooms, a laboratory and an on-site pharmacy.

The two locations will bring to 10 the

number of new medical offices that are part of Kaiser Permanente’s ongoing initiative to make health care more convenient for its members in metro Atlanta. With the additions, Kaiser Permanente will have a total of 27 medical facilities in its 28-county service area.

The Conyers and Fayetteville medical offices are slated to open in the first quarter of 2011.

Within the past year, Kaiser Permanente has opened facilities in Newnan, Snellville, Douglasville, West Marietta, East Cobb, Holly Springs, Downtown Decatur and Lawrenceville.

About Kaiser Permanente of Georgia

Bonds will fund significant improvements

for Downtown Atlanta The city of Atlanta will

see its downtown landscape change with dramatic improvements, thanks to the Atlanta Development Authority (ADA). The ADA has been actively issuing bonds to fund a variety of improvements to the downtown and Midtown areas.

ADA recently closed a $22.7 million Recovery Zone Economic Development Bond on behalf of the City of Atlanta for several public works projects including 67 intersection improvements and signal upgrades, street sign upgrades, crosswalk installation, code compliance, Edgewood Avenue bridge repair and a local match for the Peachtree Streetcar.

ADA also recently closed on a $10 million Recovery

Zone Facility Bond that will provide tax-exempt financing to fund the renovation of new office space for Perkins+Will, a design firm located in Midtown. The company purchased the 55,000 square-foot building across from the High Museum and is investing $20 million into the renovation that will also include space for a branch of the Fulton County Library and the Museum of Design Atlanta. The building, formerly occupied by Invesco, will house roughly 220 employees for Perkins+Will, 20 of them new hires. This project will bring new life to a building that has been vacant for more than two years and enhance Atlanta’s museum community.

Kaiser Permanente is Georgia’s largest not-for-profit health plan.

The organization serves more than 230,000 members in a 28-county service area in metro-Atlanta. Nationally, Kaiser Permanente is recognized as one of America’s leading health care providers, serving more than 8.6 million members in nine states and the District of Columbia.

Business Process Management (BPM), a high-end software and computer technology firm, has opened its doors for business at 1869 Harvard Ave. in downtown College Park. Collard Green Café serves up greens of prosperity, good luck black-eyed peas

Yes, it’s the same one. That’s

what Collard Green Café owner James Paige says he enjoys telling customers who walk into his “healthy soul food” joint that recently opened in Lithonia.

“People know the name from us being in business for 11 years in the Atlanta area. We wanted to go into the New Year with a new location because we feel there is no food like this around the Lithonia area,” Paige said.

All your soul food favorites like smothered pork chops, macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, sweet potatoes and, of course, collard greens are all a part of what

Paige calls a “healthy soul food” menu.

“We season our vegetables with smoked turkey, instead of pork, because everyone is looking to be a little more healthier, which is a good thing,” Paige said.

Paige, who has been in the restaurant business for more than 30 years, says he loves his job because he is serving more than just food.

“This truly is comfort food. Everyone keeps telling me all people build now days are wings and fast food spots, but now, they have some real food they can enjoy. We love those responses,” Paige said. “I hope to be in business

many more years to hear more. I like serving food, but I love serving the community.”

James invites folks to get their soul food fix and enter the New Year with some “greens for the money and black-eyed peas for good luck.” The restaurant will be open on New Year’s Day.

The restaurant is located at 7245 Rockbridge Road in Lithonia and is open Tuesday – Saturday, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. The café is currently offering a Sunday special, which includes one meat, two sides, cornbread, drink and dessert for $7.99. 770-879-1400.

New Life Church rings in New Year with new worship center

By Valerie J. Morgan

DECATUR—All you need to do is take a virtual tour of the new facility that

New Life Church has built and you quickly understand why Pastor Marlin D. Harris and his congregation are filled with excitement.

New Life’s congregation is moving from 3600 Snapfinger Road to 3592 Flat Shoals Road, where it has completed the first phase of an $18 million project that will include two additional phases.

“I am very excited about everything that God is doing,” Harris says as he beams while taking visitors on an online virtual tour, which can be seen at the church’s web site.

The three-story, 136,000-square-foot worship center sits on 17.6 acres, according to the church’s web site. The new campus is the site of the former Southwest High School football field. With the new building, the church plans to do ministry in open spaces that offer comfort and the latest technology.

The new sanctuary boasts 1,700

seats on the main floor and 300 seats in the balcony, along with lots of classroom spaces. The facility has 700 parking spaces at the campus.

There are plans for a bookstore that will carry ministry materials and books, a coffee shop, commercial kitchen, and even a “Kidz Citi,” an elaborate open space where children will learn and have fun, as well as a teen worship and café space. Another construction phase

calls for a computer lab and fitness center on the third floor of the facility, where a Christian school will be built.

Pastor Harris says the facility is designed with church growth and meeting the community’s needs in mind. The church plans to sell its former location.

A food diary may help you keep the pounds off for the New Year

Do you have a New Year’s resolution to lose weight? Keeping a daily food diary

may help you watch what you eat and shed that extra weight you’ve been trying to lose. Keeping a daily food diary can double a person’s weight loss, according to a study conducted by Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research.

“When you actually have to account for every bite you take, it encourages you to consume fewer calories,” said Ricia Taylor, a registered dietitian with Kaiser Permanente Georgia.

Participants in the study wrote down what they ate, attended weekly group sessions, exercised for at least 30 minutes a day, and followed a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat or non-fat diary. Following a strict diet may be difficult especially during the holidays or vacations, so Taylor offers the following eating tips to get you off to a good start for 2011:

Plan Ahead • Do not go all day without eating

before an event. • Eat a healthy meal before parties

and a snack before dinners so you are not as hungry at the event.

• Take foods that fit within your meal plan.

Limit portions • Split a dessert with someone else.

• Limit alcohol to one drink each day.

• Since the greatest pleasure comes from the first few bites of food, take just a few bites to savor your favorite foods.

• Use a plate for even the smallest snack to keep portion sizes small.

Buffet Tips • Before filling your plate, check out

the buffet table and think about putting foods into 3 categories: foods you definitely will eat, those you will sample, and those you will avoid.

• Do not waste calories on foods you don’t like or foods you can have anytime.

• Make just one trip to the buffet. • Don’t stand near the buffet table.

Pace Yourself • Pace yourself when eating. Eating

slowly decreases the amount of food you eat because it makes you

feel full before the food is gone. • Take a “time out” break before

moving on to eating more food. You may realize that you were not really hungry at all.

• Before drinking, satisfy your thirst with water or a calorie free, non-alcoholic beverage.

• Eat slowly.

Other Tips • Avoid grazing while you cook.

Little bites can add up. • Choose low-fat dips, dressings,

and sauces. • Choose reduced-fat products when

cooking recipes. • Focus on the people and the

fellowship, not the food. • Aim for making vegetables take up

half the room on your plate. • Fill up on water when at parties

and meals. • Eat only when hungry and not just

because food is near.

What is your Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health. Knowing your BMI can be a useful indicator for staying on track. The BMI is a statistical measurement derived from your height and weight. It is considered a useful way to measure healthy body weight and obesity (a high amount of extra body fat). The BMI measurement can sometimes be misleading, however. Someone who is muscular may have a high BMI, but have much less fat than an unfit person whose BMI is lower. In general, the BMI measurement can be a useful indicator for the “average person.”

You can calculate your BMI by visiting or downloading an APP to your I Phone: • http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/• http://apps.usa.gov/bmi-app/

Atlanta is hot spot for two shows with live audiences By Rayna Plummer

For On Common Ground News

Ever wonder what it would be like to sit front row and center during a live taping of a television show? Atlanta is home to The Mo’Nique Show and Swift Justice with Nancy Grace, both of which are open to lucky winners selected for tapings two to three times a week.

The Mo’Nique Show is the latest late-night talk show to broadcast on BET. The show features comedian and actress Mo’Nique as she interviews TV, music, theatre, film, and sports guests on various topics. Mo’Nique is a veteran on the entertainment scene. Some know her best as one of the original “Queens of Comedy” and others know her from over a dozen

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs475.snc3/26052_357374064103_64835034103_4857402_7344206_n.jpg movies over the past decade.

Since its premiere season in 2009, the show has had guest appearances from Atlanta singer Ciara, Charlie Wilson, Morris Chestnut and a slew of other notable figures.

Mae D. Jones, executive director of the 100 Black Men of DeKalb County, was part of a live audience taping for The Mo’Nique Show in December. She is keeping it a guarded secret on how she got tickets, but said she loved the experience.

“I just enjoyed being so up close to Mo’Nique and watching her conduct the interviews,” said Jones, who could not discuss specifics of the show because of confidentiality forms audience participants must sign. “She really is just as funny and entertaining in person as you see her on the big screen.”

Rodney Perry, Mo’Nique’s sidekick, keeps the crowd laughing and having a good time while Mo’Nique prepares for her entrance. At the end of each show, Mo’Nique signs off with her “Mo’Nique Moment” and asks viewers to hug themselves and spread the love.

Tickets to view The Mo’Nique Show are free for anyone 18 years and older. Tapings take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at Turner Studios. Ticket confirmation is sent to those selected. According to the Mo’Nique show website, the audience assignment team receives over 100 requests a day for tickets, so it’s

recommended to request your tickets early. Tickets can be requested at: http://www.bet.com/OnTV/BETShows/monique/themoniqueshow_tickets.htm.

Another show taped in Atlanta is Swift Justice with Nancy Grace. The former Atlanta prosecutor doesn’t sit behind the Judge’s bench, doesn’t wear a robe, and she doesn’t base her decisions solely on the “legal” facts presented.

What makes this show different is Grace’s search for deeper facts of the cases she hears. She delves into people’s backgrounds and legal issues to prepare her cases. Grace also incorporates witness testimony through the use of new technology such as Skype.

Swift Justice is the highest-rated court show to debut in the past five years. Fans of Grace’s Headline News

Show will not be disappointed by Swift Justice.

Swift Justice is filmed two days a week with episodes taped back-to-back on those days. The taping schedule revolves around Grace’s other jobs as a mom and host on her own HLN show. Audience members must be18 years of age or older and can request tickets from http://www.swiftjustice.com/tickets.
