National Sugarcane Harvest Officially Open
The ETH Bioenergia Santa Luzia Unit, loca-
ted in Mato Grosso do Sul, served as stage to
the opening of the Brazilian bioenergy sector’s
2011/2012 national sugarcane harvest.
The event was held by the company with
the support of the Mato Grosso do Sul State
Government, the National Sugar-Energy Sector,
Mato Grosso do Sul Bioenergy Producers’
Association (BIOSUL) and the Sugarcane Industry
Union (UNICA), and involved the presence of the
sector’s main leaders.
UNICA estimates that the milling in the Central-
South region for the new harvest will reach 568.5
million tons - a 2.11% growth with relation to the
total amount processed during the last harvest
- and that the ethanol and sugar production will
increase slightly, for a total of 25,507 million liters
and 34,580 tons, respectively.

Professional Qualification Program, deve-

partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of
Social Development and Fight Against
Hunger, is transforming the lives of thou-
sands of people.
Some examples of the program can be
seen at the Odebrecht Infraestrutura

construction projects, currently being
undertaken in Brazil’s Northeastern region.
Hundreds of residents from Alagoas,
Maranhão and Pernambuco received cour-
se completion certificates and some of
them already work on the contracts.

the construction site, which consists
of 122 new civil construction assis-
tants.
At the event, Contract Director,
Bruno Dourado, and Administrative
and Financial Director, Danilo Vieira,
revealed that 40 students have
already been contracted and the
others should be hired during the
course of the construction work. The
Pernambuco Arena stadium is being
built São Lourenço da Mata, in the
Metropolitan Region of Recife, for
the 2014 World Cup.
With the support of the Municipal
Government and the National
Industrial Learning Service (SENAI),
the company plans to train 600
workers over the upcoming months,
including bricklayers, carpen-
ters, assemblers and assistants.
Over 2,000 people signed up to
participate in the program.

In the municipality of
Açailândia, in Maranhão,
Odebrecht Infraestrutura is cur-
rently expanding the Carajás
Railroad, which connects
Parauapebas, in Pará, to São
Luís, in Maranhão.
From the start of the Acreditar
program - first undertaken in
the cities of Santa Rita, Bom
Jesus das Selvas and Açailândia
- in November of last year, the
company received over 3,200
new registrations and has alrea-
dy qualified 886 workers.
On April 14, 356 students from
Açailândia received their conclu-
sion certificates, and should like-
ly be hired during the months of

However, the first Acreditar groups began their classes
in November 2010.
The partnership between Odebrecht, Braskem, the
National Industrial Learning Service (SENAI), the State
Government and Municipal Government will prepare
640 workers for construction jobs at the new industrial
unit. Over 1,060 people from the region signed up and
those selected can choose between the training cour-
ses for the professions of carpenter, hardware assem-
bler, electrician, assembler and adjustment mechanic,
industrial plumber, boilermaker welder and welder.
“The program reinforces the importance Odebrecht
gives to training people in the communities in which
it operates and leaves a legacy to the residents,” said
José Carlos Aversa, Contract Director.
The presence of several women in the courses has
surprised the program’s coordination team and even
the participants themselves. “In the two first carpen-
try groups, which began in November of last
year, 86% of the students who signed up were
women,” said Ana Carolina Alves, Acreditar
Coordinator at the PVC Plant.
From Monday through Friday, Sandra
Márcia, age 30, dedicates four hours per day
to the Assembler Electrician course classes.
“I am loving it and I hope to soon be able to
help increase the family’s earnings,” said the
resident of the Poeiras neighborhood, located
in the periphery of Marechal Deodoro. Of the
18 students in Sandra’s class, 13 are women.
“This shows that many professions are no lon-
ger ‘exclusively’ for men,” said Alves.
Homemaker Rosângela Santos da Silva
closed the snack stand she ran in downtown
Marechal Deodoro to sign up for Acreditar.
She chose carpentry because she believes
that it will bring good work opportunities
after the end of the unit construction work.
“I want to have a profession and a job with
benefits,” said Silva. “My life has begun to
change,” she said.

Federal Government’s social programs, such as the Family Stipend.
A total of R$ 17.2 million have been invested in the program and 24,900 participants have
been contracted to work on 16 Odebrecht Organization projects. Acreditar is currently being

On April 14, the CONPAR Consortium, for-

UTC Engenharia and OAS, re-inaugurated the
Califórnia Municipal Children’s Education Center
(CMEI) in the city of Araucária in Paraná after the
revitalization projects.
The action, the result of the consortium’s par-
tnership with the Jardim Califórnia Children’s
Full Assistance Center, an entity tied to the
Municipal Government, included the remo-
deling of the children’s park, the construction
of a lactarium - for the production of milk for
children in the breastfeeding phase - and impro-
vements in the school’s electrical network. The
initiative included repairs of the loose flooring,
cleaning of the awnings, replacement of broken
windows, painting of the indoor area, remode-
ling of the cafeteria and installation of a new
clothes washing machine. The institution also
received donations of new awnings, an indus-

employees of the teaching institution paid tri-

distributed gifts to the students after the ope-
ning of the park.
The Municipal Secretary of Education, Maria
José Dietrich, emphasized CMEI’s importance
for the local community - the school is the lar-
gest in Araucária and currently has 230 children
ages 1-4. “We have worked hard to increase the
CMEIs, and that is why we need partners like the
CONPAR Consortium,” said Dietrich.
OTHER INITIATIVES
The partnership between the consor-
tium and CAIC has resulted in several other
actions, such as the installation of a “Hit the
Net” Program classroom, the holding of the
“Cook Brazil” event and the distribution of
gifts for children on festive dates.
“Our construction project at the
Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery (REPAR)
is currently in the conclusive phase, but as
long as we are in Araucária, we will continue
undertaking Social Responsibility actions.
“We hope that these initiatives encoura-
ge other companies to contribute toward
the development of the communities,” said
Antônio Costa, Contract Director.

According to Portuguese teacher,

have a significant influence in the lives of
human beings. “The message being taken
to the youth will prompt them to return

For Yasmin Santos, age 10, reading brin-
gs more than knowledge. It is fun and
allows people to travel around the world.
