Community Pharmacy Surrey and Sussex (CPSS) August 2017 Newsletter. We represent, support, develop and promote NHS Community Pharmacy in Surrey & Sussex in the interests of contractors and service users. Mitigating against losses as the cuts start to bite. A message from Mark Donaghy, West Sussex LPC Vice Chair The cuts to pharmacy income are starng to hurt so it is essenal that as contractors, we take all steps possible to migate against losses. The obvious ways are to ensure that you are maximising your advanced services income and compleng 400 MURs per year, as many NMS as possible and are ready to deliver the flu vaccinaon service. However there are other ways which you should be aware of... have your prescribers increased their prescribing duraon e.g. from 28 to 56 or from 7 to 28 days? If so, have your prescripon numbers decreased compared to the same month last year and is the reason due to the increase in prescribing duraon and not because a new pharmacy has opened? If so, you should be eligible for a safeguarding payment using claim 2 outlined in Part XIVC of the Drug Tariff. The claim form needs to be downloaded from the NHSBSA website and has to be submied with your prescripons in each affected month. NHS England is currently consulng on advising CCGs to decommission prescribing of certain medicines and some local CCGs have already started so it is probably advisable to wait unl you have a prescripon before you reorder drugs such as liothyronine tablets, lidocaine patches, doxazosin MR and fentanyl lozenges which are some of those affected. You may wish to contact your head office for guidance. Mitigating against losses as the cuts start to bite. A message from Mark Donaghy, West Sussex LPC Vice Chair

The cuts to pharmacy income are starting to hurt so it is essential that as contractors, we take all steps possible to mitigate against losses. The obvious ways are to ensure that you are maximising your advanced services income and completing 400 MURs per year, as many NMS as possible and are ready to deliver the flu vaccination service.

However there are other ways which you should be aware of... have your prescribers increased their prescribing duration e.g. from 28 to 56 or from 7 to 28 days? If so, you should be eligible for a safeguarding payment using claim 2 outlined in Part XIVC of the Drug Tariff. The claim form needs to be downloaded from the NHSBSA website and has to be submitted with your prescriptions in each affected month.

NHS England is currently consulting on advising CCGs to decommission prescribing of certain medicines and some local CCGs have already started so it is probably advisable to wait until you have a prescription before you reorder drugs such as liothyronine tablets, lidocaine patches, doxazosin MR and fentanyl lozenges which are some of those affected. West Sussex LPC Newsletter | August 2017 3

A message from Ruth Osbourne, Senior Practitioner from West Sussex County Council Adult Services ROVI team (Rehabilitation Officers: Visual Impairment), contacted the Local Pharmaceutical Committee with concerns about management of Glaucoma long term, following issues identified during Social Care Assessments they undertake.

There are several reasons why a patient might be struggling.

Loss of dexterity in their fingers, loss of movement in their wrists or neck, arthritis in neck etc. This makes the physical act of getting into the correct position to administer the drops painful or impossible.

lack of ability to read the instructions, identify bottles if the drug company supplier has changed or forgetfulness (might be medical reasons).

patients move out of county and their check-ups do not continue. They move into residential nursing care and ‘fall of the list’ so to speak.

Who’s responsible for checking that the patient is still managing to administer their eye drops?

Emma Crozier – Smith, a Senior ROVI in the team, presented case examples to the Pharmacists where sight loss has accrued as a result of poor management, at the LPC meeting in July, and they came up with suggestions…

Asking GP’s/ consultants who prescribe eye drops to add on the prescription the person is visually impaired and to check if they are OK with the drops. There is an information box on the prescription where GP’s can add this information.

Encouraging patients to actually speak to the pharmacist about any worries they have about eye drops.

Most pharmacists will make time to talk to patients plus have consultations rooms. Making large print prescription information available for medication and use of audible labels. Helping visually impaired patients they know of, by making medications different from each other by touch.

A meeting of professionals involved in the care of patients with glaucoma to raise and resolve some of these issues will take place on 27th September 2017 10.00am till noon at The Lewes Room, Parkside (County Hall North), Chartway, Horsham RH12 1HX.
