Welcome!Welcome!

C elebrate! We all enjoy having time to exalt in the bountiful world around us. The holiday season provides a defined time for people to reflect upon the opportunities they have been given to live life to its fullest.

The seventy volunteer members of Solano Winds get to celebrate these kind of moments on a weekly basis. Rehearsing the music for this “Celebrations” concert has been its own ongoing celebration for each of us. The music is not only joyful to listen to, it provides us all with the challenges that make the process of music-making so magical.

But what is most celebratory for musicians is the opportunity to share our music making with you - our friends, neighbors, and family. There is a special magic that happens only when you are here to celebrate with us. Thank you for making that happen tonight! Happy Holidays!

Bill Doherty Music Director Solano Winds Community Concert Band

Bill Doherty Bill Doherty -- Music DirectorMusic Director

In 1994, as Bob Briggs was beginning his last year before retirement as Director of the University of California Band, Bill Doherty suggested to him that they start a community band in Fairfield. A year later, that vision became a reality as Bob founded Solano Winds. Bill served as the first President of the group and helped to formalize the behind-the-scenes workings of the band while playing principal trumpet. Upon the passing of Robert O. Briggs in September 2008, Bill was named Music Director of Solano Winds. Bill played in the Cal Band under Bob’s leadership while earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught band for eleven years, including a three-year stay at Vanden High School, before adding mathematics to his teaching credential. In addition to his high school bands, Bill conducted the Berkeley Symphonic Band from 1985 to 1989. Currently, he teaches mathematics and assists teachers in their use of instructional technology at Campolindo High School in Moraga. He lives in Fairfield with his wife, Jennifer, who teaches music in Fairfield and plays percussion in Solano Winds, and enjoys spending time with his three children.

Program NotesProgram Notes

The Bride Elect March The Bride Elect is a Sousa operetta that was first staged in 1897. The story is a typically goofy tale of two farcical kingdoms which become involved over the shooting of the king’s goat. As a proper reparation for the offense, a peace commission finally decides on the King’s marriage to the princess of the offending country, thus making the opposing princess the bride elect. In spite of the advantages of following closely behind another Sousa operetta, his popular El Capitan, The Bride Elect had a relatively short run. It lives on, however, through this sparkling march, which brings Act II of the operetta to a close. Symphonic Songs for Band - Celebration A three-movement suite, the Symphonic Songs for Band was composed in 1958 on a commission from the national band fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, and was premiered at the national convention in Salt Lake City. In the composer’s words:

“Symphonic Songs are as much a suite of dances or scenes as songs, deriving their name from the tendency of the principal parts to sing out a fairly diatonic tune against whatever rhythm develops in the middle instruments. The Celebration recalls an old-time county fair in cheering throngs (in the woodwinds), a circus act or two, and the inevitable mule race.” Catch Me If You Can Catch Me If You Can is the 20th film John Williams has scored for Steven Spielberg and the 41st Williams score to earn an Oscar nomination (with five wins). Williams told the Hollywood Reporter that "Of all the films we've done together, this is probably the closest to a romantic adventure-comedy piece...The style of the film includes a very vivid and accurate re-creation of the sort of swinging '60s style. The score that I've written for it — I hope it's amusing — features some so-called progressive jazz elements derived from the style that was popular in the '50s and early '60s. In particular, it features some brilliant alto sax work by a man named Dan Higgins, in almost a Charlie Parker style. The film has functional comedic film music but with a doffing of the cap to the jazz greats of the era, all of which is done to re-create the ambiance of those years."

Éljen A Magyár! The Austro-Hungarian Agreement, ratified on March 15, 1867, was one of the most important events in the history of the Hungarian people. Referred to as the “Ausgleich,”, or “compromise”, it stipulated self governance an representative governance for the Hungarian Kingdom. What had been, to that point, a single, Austrian Empire was divided into a dual monarchy. For the events celebrating the second anniversary of the treaty, Johann, Josef and Eduard Strauss were invited, along with their orchestras, to Budapest to give joint concerts in the Grand Ballroom of the capital in March of 1869. Johann Strauss composed for the occasion the polka Élgen A Magyár!, which translates as Long Live the Magyárs!, referring to the centuries-old Hungarian tribal confederation. The joy and pride of the Hungarian people’s new independence was so pronounced that Strauss even went so far as to quote motives from Liszt’s “Rákóczy March”, which had been forbidden for nearly 20 years in Austria, in the polka’s coda. Élgen A Magyár! is “dedicated to the Hungarian Nation” and had it s premeire performance at the first of the two celebration concerts. La Fiesta Mexicana - Mass The church bells toll at the beginning of Mass, the second movement of La Fiesta Mexicana, to remind all that the fiesta is a religious celebration. The rich and poor gather together for a service of worship and contemplation. True to the long musical tradition of the Catholic Mass, H. Owen Reed employs a simple, beautiful theme and builds an entire work around it. You can almost see the congregation singing their praises, and the priest gives a lovely benediction as the service winds down. Symphonic Dance No. 3: Fiesta Symphonic Dance No. 3, Fiesta is one of a group of five works originally commissioned by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra. The first performance of the complete set of dances was by that orchestra, conducted by the composer, January 30, 1965. Fiesta depicts the pageantry of Latin-American celebrations - street bands, bullfights, and bright costumes - the colorful legacy of a proud people. The band version, also done by the composer, Clifton Williams, was premiered at the American Bandmasters Association convention in Miami, Florida, March 4, 1967, by the University of Miami's “Band of the Hour” under the composer’s direction. A Fireside Christmas In addition to his long career writing music for the television and film industries, Sammy Nestico wrote for the Count Basie Orchestra for 17 years, as well as the US Air Force Band for 15 years and the US Marine Band for 5 years, both in Washington D.C. This arrangement contains arrangements of several contemporary holiday songs: Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, I’ll Be Home For Christmas, Frosty The Snowman, Winter Wonderland, and The Christmas Song.

‘Twas The Night Before Christmas Clement Clarke Moore, an American poet born in New York City in 1779 is credited with the writing of A Visit To St. Nicholas for his children in 1822. It was first published anonymously in the Troy (New York) Sentinel in 1823. Moore was educated at Columbia College (now Columbia University). The music was commissioned in the 1980’s for a Christmas Concert by the Philly Pops conducted by Peter Nero, and was designed to feature the Phillie’s star pitcher, Tug McGraw. Rhapsody for Hanukkah Stephen Bulla joined “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band and White House Orchestra as Staff Arranger in 1980. In that role, he was responsible for the production of music that encompassed many styles and instrumental combinations, most of which were performed for Presidential functions and visiting dignitaries. His musical arrangements for many performers were featured on the PBS television series, “In Concert at the White House”. Bulla retired from his White House position earlier this year. Rhapsody for Hanukkah, specially commissioned by The Brass Band of Battle Creek, is a stirring potpourri of songs associated with the celebration of Hanukkah. Some of the melodies are upbeat and dance-like while others are considered a part of the traditional blessing ceremonies. You will want to listen for popular favorites like the Dreidel Song, the lovely folk song Raisins and Almonds, and the well known song Eight Days of Hanukkah (also known as Those Were The Days, My Friend). Sleigh Ride Leroy Anderson believed that musical ideas came to his mind because he was constantly on the alert for them. Fiddle Faddle, for example, was composed after hearing Paganini’s Perpetual Motion. Memories of sleigh-ride sounds from his New England boyhood suggested the musical themes in this work. As in Typewriter and Sandpaper Ballet, sounds from the “real world” are used in Sleigh Ride. As important as the nostalgic bell sounds, however, are Anderson’s excellent melodies and scoring. A Canadian Brass Christmas Luther Henderson and Howard Cable each wrote music for the Canadian Brass for over 20 years. They created this medley of some of their favorite titles from their holiday recording, A Canadian Brass Christmas. The opening imitates chimes before we hear the traditional carol, Ding Dong! Merrily On High. A brief interlude brings us to I Saw Three Ships, a traditional English carol. The Huron Carol is a lovely and mysterious carol of Canadian origin. Finally, with Here We Come A-Wassailing, the work concludes by wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Her major was Music Performance. It’s to Pam’s credit that she worked her way through both degrees. At CSUH she worked as music librarian in the Music Department, and then while at San Francisco State, she worked as an orchestra librarian for the SF Opera. While in school she enjoyed both band and art. She started teaching public school music in 1982 and has since taught concert, jazz, and marching band music in high school, middle school and elementary school. She also taught choir and general music. Her teaching took her to San Lorenzo, Sonoma Valley, Rohnert Park, and finally to St. Helena. She also participated in the Cazadero Music

Currently Pam teaches all instrumental music classes in the St. Helena District. She is director of the band and jazz ensemble at St. Helena HS, band and international drumming at RLS Middle School, and band at St. Helena’s Elementary School. Pam and her husband, John Campbell, live in Sonoma where they have two dogs, chickens, sheep and their neighbor’s goats. Maintaining a large vegetable garden takes considerable effort, but it pays off by providing food for them and their dogs for much of the year. John has been one of the orchestra librarians with the SF Symphony for the past 20 years – and he plays the saxophone when he gets a chance. Pam has played professionally with many organizations over the years. She says that they’re looking forward to traveling in the near future.

In the Fall of 1994, as Bob Briggs was leading the California Marching Band through his last season before his retirement, Bill Doherty suggested to him that he could fill his time in retirement by starting up a community band to conduct in Fairfield. Before becoming the Director of Bands at the University of California, Bob was the Director of the Armijo SuperBand, building a standard of excellence with that high school program. Strong high school bands in Fairfield have been around since that time, including many successful years for the Fairfield Scarlet Brigade. What was missing was a place for adult musicians to continue to play their instruments. Bob took on the challenge, and attended Community Band workshops at the MidWest Band Clinic in Chicago that year. In the summer of 1995, a group of musicians gathered to discuss the possibility of putting together such a group, and two months later, 40 band musicians gathered at Fairfield High School for the first rehearsal of the Solano Winds. One week after that first rehearsal of October 5, 1995, over 50 musicians from seven counties were with the band to prepare for our first performance at Will C. Wood High School in December. Since that enthusiastic beginning, the band has regularly fielded a band of 45-70 members to perform a number of concerts throughout the year. Each year, the band has prepared four formal programs, and has also performed at events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks Show in Suisun, regular concerts at Paradise Valley Estates, and an annual appearance in the Carmichael Park Community Band Festival each June. The band has grown organizationally from our beginnings as well - starting with $500 grants from Gordon's Music and Sound and the Fairfield Scarlet Brigade Boosters in 1995, we now enjoy funding from a growing number of donors. Bill Doherty took the baton as Music Director for the band after Bob Briggs passed away in September 2008. The purpose of the band remains as how it started - to perform high quality band literature well, and to have fun doing it!
