Visual Research PresentationSpirited Away: Production/ Directing & His-

    torical Context

Introduction:For our presentation we looked at Miyaza-kis Spirited Away. We wanted to discuss theproduction and historical context behind theilm. This is so that we understand what Mi-yazaki has done, why and how the ilm wasaffected by a the events that surrounded it.

    Plot:

Spirited away is essentially a coming ofage story. We follow the character of Chi-hiro/ Sen as she is moving house. When herparents are turned into pigs as a result oftheir greed Chihiro and strays into the spiritworld where she must work in a Bathhouseto survive. She is faced by challenges fromthe evil Yubaba to save her parents and ulti-mately ind her way home.

Spirited Away-In Numbers:Historical Context:Spirited Away includes many underlyingthemes and contain many issues regardingJapanese society around the time of produc-tion-The ideas of tradition being forgotten,

-Environmental Pollution,- Japans economic downturn in year of re-

    lease

This may also have a lot to do with its suc-cess and entertainment industries such asilms can thrive during economic hardshipas they provide a sense of escapisms in hardtimes. This is also the reason for the tradition set-ting of the ilm; Miyazaki was able to showpeople a.

If look further back at the inluences WW2has had on Japanese animation we see it hadboth positive and negative effects. DuringWW2 American ilm and animations wereheavily imported and soon Japanese anima-tion began to adopt the style of the west. After WW2 Japanese soldiers surrenderedto US troop and their allies stayed in Japanuntil 1952.

Television:..Although animation became mass-producedfor television in the 50s and 60s as inthe west it was never seen as a childrenmedium and as a result has developedwidespread genres and subject matters.

Although Susan Napier was able to identifythe following recurring genres; Cyber punk,

elegiac, apocalyptic and mecha (mechanical)perhaps relecting both Japans traditionalcultural concerns and those raised by WW2.

Lucca Rafaelli also noted recurring themessuch as the use of orphans, parentless char-acters, androids, issues of isolation or differ-ence; These are all things included in spir-ited away.

Because animation is a part of the popular

culture it inluenced the masses. Childrengrowing up seeing this westernized image oftheir heroes created a generation that have adesire to be western.

Adults would be bombarded by the westernideologies and it would lead to the adoptionof the western diet, clothing, some wouldeven take it as far as a getting blonde hairand big blue eyes looks like they are con-fused about their identity.
