Mostpeoplehavehadanexperienceofdeliveringorreceivingbadnews.Badnewshasdifferentmeaningsdependingonthecontextandtheindividual’sperspective.Atabasiclevelbadnewscanbedescribedas‘apersonorthingregardedasunpleasant,unlucky,orundesirable’.Withinthecontextofhealthcaretheuseofthistermcanbeenoughtoevokefeelingsoffearanddread.However‘badnews’isnotlimitedonlytotheareaofhealthcare.Itsdeliveryismulti-contextualandfarreachingandalsocanoccurintheareasofeducation,occupation,financialorrelationships.Theliteratureprovidesexamplesofprotocols,guidanceandrecommendationsonwaystomakethisprocessmoreefficientandcompassionate.Unfortunatelytheprocessofdeliveringorreceivingbadnewsremainschallengingforallinvolved.Onerevieweroftheliteraturecommented‘Whoseneedisbeingmet?’(Balie,2000).Usingavarietyofmethodsthispresentationaimstoexplorehowenhancingoneslisteningabilitymayprovideaninvaluablecontributiontodeliveringorreceivingthislifechangingprocess.

Stressandtraumaresearchhasshownthatintimesofdifficultnews,humanstendtoseektoquicklyresolveanycognitivedissonanceaboutcausesofthedistress—oftentooquicklyforgooddecision-makingandemotionalhealth.Manyexperts—includingtheologians,therapists,andtheoristsofgooddecision-makingpractices—suggestthatitishealthierforthoseexperiencingemotionalcrisesandanycomfortersaliketoresistsuchimpulses,atleastforatime,insteadholdingspaceforanynuancedcomplexitiestobefullyfeltandanalyzed.Iwilldiscussthewaysthatnon-directivelistening,whichisoftenseenaspassive,mayactuallyplayalargepartingivingboththetraumatizedandtheirsupporterswaystoactivelypushbacktoo-quickclosureinthemidstofemotionalcrisesbyallowingthemtoholdspaceforcomplexity.

UsingthebookFox(2006)byMargaretWildandRonBrooksacase-studywasconductedaskingEducationMajorstoself-reflectafteranoratoryreadingwaspresentedofthestory.Thisstudyhighlightsself-to-texttheoryfromHarris(1997),thebibliotherapyprocessaspresentedbyHalsted(2002),andanintegrationofWalterFisher’sNarrativeparadigm(1984;1994).Theresultsofthisstudyconcludethatchildren’sliteraturemaybeuniversalinreachingindividualsofanyagewhodesiretoattemptcatharsisusingnarrative.Participantresultsalsorevealedthateducatorsmayfeelbibliotherapycouldbeappropriatelyused,andhelpful,inaclassroomsetting.
