ThisongoingresearchexplorestheroleandfunctionsoflisteningforFrenchCanadiansocialworkersinaclinicalmentalhealthsetting.Asafieldofpracticefocusingontheinteractionofindividualsandtheirenvironment,canclinicalsocialworkprovideaformoflisteningthathelpsnurtureasocialbondhinderedbysufferingsrelatedtothestigmatizationandmarginalization?

Anecdotally,weknowthatgoodlistenersmakegoodleaders.Althoughlessresearchexiststoprovethis,someauthors(BechlerandJohnson,1995;Simmons,2011)havefoundempiricalevidencethatthoseingroupswhoareperceivedasexcellentlistenersareoftenalsotheonesperceivedaspotentialleaders.Inthisqualitativestudy,studentsinleadershippositionsshedlightontheirlisteningabilitiesandhowtheyrelatetotheirpositionsofleadership.

Anumberofrecent,andcomprehensiveresearchreviewshaveestimatedthecumulativefailurerateofnewdrugsfromthediscoveryphase,topreclinicalstages,andclinicaldevelopmentisactuallyover98%.Nobodywantstopaytheaccompanyingemotionalcoststhatfailurebrings.Thistypeoflosscanbringwithitassociatednegativeemotionalreactions,mostnotablyregretandalsoshame,discouragementandembarrassment.Interviewswith45ChiefExecutiveOfficers,ChiefMedicalOfficersandChiefScientificOfficersofthemostsuccessfulUS

Mostpeoplehavehadanexperienceofdeliveringorreceivingbadnews.Badnewshasdifferentmeaningsdependingonthecontextandtheindividual’sperspective.Atabasiclevelbadnewscanbedescribedas‘apersonorthingregardedasunpleasant,unlucky,orundesirable’.Withinthecontextofhealthcaretheuseofthistermcanbeenoughtoevokefeelingsoffearanddread.However‘badnews’isnotlimitedonlytotheareaofhealthcare.Itsdeliveryismulti-contextualandfarreachingandalsocanoccurintheareasofeducation,occupation,financialorrelationships.Theliteratureprovidesexamplesofprotocols,guidanceandrecommendationsonwaystomakethisprocessmoreefficientandcompassionate.Unfortunatelytheprocessofdeliveringorreceivingbadnewsremainschallengingforallinvolved.Onerevieweroftheliteraturecommented‘Whoseneedisbeingmet?’(Balie,2000).Usingavarietyofmethodsthispresentationaimstoexplorehowenhancingoneslisteningabilitymayprovideaninvaluablecontributiontodeliveringorreceivingthislifechangingprocess.

Metacognitivelisteningstrategieshelpstudentsunderstandthatmetacognitionisnotonesingletacticorskill,butratherasequenceoftacticsthatareusedtobemoreeffectivelisteners.Teachingstudentsthatcognitivelisteningiscriticaltocomprehension,butmetacognitivelisteningstrategiesassistinmonitoringthe

UsingthebookFox(2006)byMargaretWildandRonBrooksacase-studywasconductedaskingEducationMajorstoself-reflectafteranoratoryreadingwaspresentedofthestory.Thisstudyhighlightsself-to-texttheoryfromHarris(1997),thebibliotherapyprocessaspresentedbyHalsted(2002),andanintegrationofWalterFisher’sNarrativeparadigm(1984;1994).Theresultsofthisstudyconcludethatchildren’sliteraturemaybeuniversalinreachingindividualsofanyagewhodesiretoattemptcatharsisusingnarrative.Participantresultsalsorevealedthateducatorsmayfeelbibliotherapycouldbeappropriatelyused,andhelpful,inaclassroomsetting.

The“brokenheart”exhibitsavarietyofintenseemotionalandphysicalpain.Itisimperativetounderstandthemake-upoftheindividualssufferingthe“brokenheart.”Healingthe“brokenheart”isenhancedbystrategicandskillfullisteningbyindividualswhocaredeeplyandarecommittedtosupportingtheemotionalandphysicalhealthofthoseinpain.Thisisespeciallydifficultwhenwearesufferingfromourownbrokenheart.Wewillexploreprovenstrategiesoflisteningtothe“heartbrokenevenwhenweareheartbroken.”
