From the desk of

|| Vedams & our Vidhika- SampradhAyam ||

It is my deep pleasure and distinctprivelege to share some thoughts with you on the four Vedams and their six angAs, which are distilled in the four prabhandhams ( Tamizh MaRais ) of NammAzhwAr and the the six Veda angams that are considered to be close to the six prabhandhams of Thirumangai AzhwAr . I am so glad that Sriman A. Krishnan of Srirangam and his fellow trustees of the Delhi Vedic Trust have painstakingly recorded the Shukla Yajur Vedam (KaNva and Madhyandina sAkhAs) , Rg Vedam (Shakala SaakhA) , Yajur Vedam ( Shukla and KrishNa samhithAs ), Sama Vedam (Ranayaniy, Jaimini and Kouthuma SakhAs) and Atharva Vedam (Saunaka SaakhA).

Sriman Mani Varadarajan has brought our attention to the availability of these high quality audio tapes from Sri A.Krishnan , a permanent resident of Srirangam and one of the trustees of the Delhi Vedic Trust, who will be in this country until June of this year. He can be reached by e-mail regarding the acquisition of these outstanding audio casettes and more than that the bringing in of the sacred Veda Dhvani that is enshrined there into your homes and temples. All the members of the Bhakthi list with links to their local temples could perhaps render a great service to their communities by persuading the temple executives to purchase for their temple's use these tapes for use in the daily , seasonal pujA and special festivals . I am thinking here especailly of Sriman TatachAr of Cincinatti temple , Sriman M.G. prasad of Balaji Temple of Bridge water and links to MahA Ganapathi templeat Queens , NY , SriVijayaraghavan of Buffalo temple , Sriman Krishnamachari of Aurora temple , Sriman Murali Rangaswamy of MahA Lakshmi temple , Sriman ParthA of Houston MeenAkshi Temple and others .

Page 5: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

As many of you know , there are special passages of VedAs recommended for EkAdasi ( achithram and AsvamEdham ) and other sacred days. These tapes could be an invaluable source and resource to help the children learn about the ancient and illustrious Vedic roots of our tradition .

This will be an one time investment that is not much for the temples. The Veda Dhvani can thus be enhanced in this country. In this context, Jaimini's Purva MeemAmsa SutrA (1.VI.11) says:

vruddhisccha karthrubhUmnAasya

( Meaning ) : Also because a multiplicity of persons uttering the WORD (veda manhtram) bring about an increased magnitude ( in the word Sound /Veda Dhvani ) .The auspicious effects of that dhvani and their sound vibrations have a profoundly purifying and calming effect on one's mind and body . This has been well studied .

The Sanskrit and the Tamil VedAs help us in Nithya SamyOgam with the Veda Purushan celebrated in the Purusha Sooktham , which is found in all the four VedAs .The skambha sooktham dealing with creation and the Ucchishta Brahmam (Atharva Vedam ) and many ohter passages are profound reflections of these timeless tresaures passed onto us in the guru-sishya mode by aural means alone .

This ancient & sacred tradition of passing on the Vedic inheritance has been referred to by another Sutram of Purva MeemAmsam : Tulyamja sAmpradhAyikam ( 2nd PadA .first AdhikaraNam, sUtram 8) .

Why do we repeat the Veda mantrAs with purity of Svarams ? Why do we learn it at all ? Jaimini points out two reasons among many :

AakAlikEpsA (Purva Meemsa SoothrAs 1.2.14 ) and guNArhthEna puna: sruthi: ( SoothrA 1.2.41)

The first of the above two soothram says that one recites because there is a desire for immediate good ; the next one states that the repeated recitation is for the purposes of qualification . There is a major hint here about the purification of oneself for the two great journeys , which are referred to at the beginning of Jaimini's Purva MeemAmsa and BaadarAyaNA's Uttara MeemAmsa SoothrAs :

athAthO Dharma jig~yAsA ( Jamini 1.1.1) athAtho Brahma Jig~yAsA ( BaadharAyanA 1.1.1)

The first Soothram deals with the invitation towards the inquiry into the nature of our Duty. This one deals with the Karma KhAnda (work-portion) of the VedAs , which have been sometimes dismissed as ephemeral and limited .

Therefore , the first of the Brahma Soothrams shifts gear and invites us to the inquiry about the knowledge of Brahman , who is eternal and infinite .

Page 6: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

After preparation from the study of VedAs ( SvAdhyAyaa ), one starts with the inquiry into Brahman to realize eternal and unlimited fruits (i-e) Moksham . The study of VedAs thru a Guru ( AchArya mukhEna ) is a prerequisite for the inquiry into Brahman .

The connection between Dharmam and Vedam ( Vaidhika Dharmam ) as well as between Dharmam and Brahman as the complimentary step is pointed out by Sage Jaimini in his MeemAmsa Soothram 1.3.1:

dharmasya sabdhamUlathvAth asabdham anapEksham syAth

( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not VedA should be disregarded . The sole authority of the VedAs over all else including sruthis is indicated here. Although Smrithi has its basis in the VedAs , it should be discared , if it has any discrepancy with the VedAs according to Sage Jaimini and his intrepreters , KumArila BhattA , PrabhAkarA et al .

The relation between Dharmam and Brahman is saluted by NigamAntha MahA Desikan in his DasAvathAra Slokam associated with Sri RamachandrA as the embodiment of Dharmam :

" sarvAvastha sakruth prapanna- janathA samrakshaNika vrathee DHARMO VIGRAHAVAAN adharma- viratheem dhanvee sa tanveetha na:"

The Lord is Dharnma SvarUpee; He has the avowed dheekshA to protect any one , who has sought His refuge/protection even once . That is His Dharmaam and Swami VedAntha Desikan prays to this embodiment of Dharmam to give us the strength not to lapse into Adharmam , anything discarded by the VedAs . The samyOgam (connection) of the VedAs and Dharmam is thus indissolvable.

In the third adhyAyaa , first paadham , Jaimini starts with Sesha -Seshee relations. In the first sUthram , he decalres the subject matter of the adhyAyam : AthAtha: sEsha LakshaNam . sEshA stands for anga and aasrithA and a subsidiary of the primordial, the principal , the Ucchishta Brahmam . Jaimini goes onto say in the next Soothram : " sEsha: ParArhtathvAth ". He defines "sEsha" to mean a subsidiary thing, which exists because of the principal , the nithya vasthu , the nigamAntha vasthu . The Sesha-sEshi relationship has been elaborated at great length for our benefit by the Foundation-thinker of Sri VisishTaadhvaitham , AchArya RaamAnujA and his successors .

Veda manthrAs are thus very important for us . They are the root of the tree of DharmA . These manthrAs have been classified under three heads: Rg , Yajus and Saama . Atharva VedA has its own place for the approach of the Brahman thru tantrA and other rituals . Rg vedam thru prayer and intellectual pursuits; Yajur Vedam thru invocation of Agni for transprting the message enshrined in hymns to the Sureme . Saama Vedam thru rendering of those hyms of Rg and Yajur vedams in music or singing.

Page 7: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

I will conclude this posting with Jaimini's defenition of the three VedAs and their characteristics this way :

thEshAm Rg YathrArthavasEna pAdhavyasthA (JS :1.12.35)

(Meaning): The name Rg (rik) is applied to those manthrAs that are divided into paadhAs ( feet ) , that is , certain well defined parts , each of which consists of a definite number of syllables ; and are called on that account by such prosodial names (chandas) like GayathrI(24 syllables), Trishtup (44) , Bruhathi (36) ,Anushtup (32) Asthi (64) , Jagathi (48 ) et al .

Saama Vedam is defined as the one given to music , where the mantrAs are sung in different styles of music like RathantarA , Brihath and the like . These different methods of singing are followed precisely . Bruhath sAman is sung for instance with force and loudly in contrast to RathAnthara saaman ( geethishu SamAkhyA : JS 1.12.36).

Yajur Veda mantrAs are defined as those not having metres (paadhams) or associated with singing ( sEshu yaju: sabdha: ). If there are any metrical portion in Yajur vedam , they are considered by some under the above strict definition as comparitively modern .

The two kinds of hymns are further dividable across the four vEdAs as SthOthrAs and SaasthrAs :

sthuthasasrayOasthu samskArE yAjyaAvadhyEvatA abhidhAnathvAth - Js: 1.5.13

SthOthrAs and SaasthrA hymns bring about santification like YaajyA hymns , because they distinctly signify deities ( which are sEshAs to the SEshi ) .

SthOthrAs are the name of those hymns that consist of manthrAs capable of being set to music and sung ,- as distinct form the SaasthrA hymns consisting of manthrAs not sung . I will conclude this posting about Bhagavdh SvarUpam of the VedAs with the famous Bhagavadha SlOkam the Lord , who is Sarva manthra SvarUpi,sarvAntharyAmi an din the form of Sarva Krathus ( Yaj~nams ). He is present in the form to be worshipped with Bhakthi and Detatchment ( VairAgyam ) by PrapannAs . May my Salutations be to this Dharma Vigraha , Veda Moorthy , Yaj~na VarAhan with the four rthviks at his feet ( ChathurhOthArangrou ).

Sathyakalam – visual treat.

By our sub editor : sri. Sridharasrinivasan.

SrI:

Dear Srivaishnavas,

Let me apologise for giving you your visual treat late by one week. Yes Sathyagalam

function was celebrated on 1st November 2009. I thank you all for making it a grand

success. This year’s Devotees turnout was large , I should also thank Sri U Ve

Dr.Ananthapadmanabhachar , he did lot of publicity in TV Media . Now people know

Sathyagalam, yes in 2003 only very few were knowing it and in internet also only one or

two mails were there in archives page and i came to know about it through my Anna and

my Astrological Guru Sri. K.R.Arulaalan, and Sri Diwakar only. Then a web site was built

with inputs from Sri K R Krishnaswami Mama and Sri B S Shelvanarayan Mama. Now

Sathyagalam has two websites.

www.sathyagalamtemples.net and

sathyagalam.desikantemples.net. The Uniqueness and

details are available in the website.

On 31st October itself we left for Sathyagalam and had

the Thula Snanam same day as we know next day crowd

will be more. Next day H H Parakala Jeer Swami arrived

along with Dolai Aradhanai Moorthy Sri Hyagreeva He

was accorded the Poornakumbham Mariyada. His

Kainkaryapara set up the Dolai etc. Then he started the

Aradhani of the Moorthies. Meanwhile Veda Parayana

was going on one side, You should see the flow of

visitors , One full bus came from Hulikal in Hassan District ( Led by My Wife’s Paterna l

uncle Sri H R Kasturirangan a Former I G of Karnataka Cadre), Mysore, Coimbatore,

Chennai, two buses from Bangalore ( Led by Sri U Ve H R Sridhar Mama) and lot of

Parakala Mutt Shyshyas and Asmath Acharyan H H Rangapriya Swamis Shyshyas. All

devotees were given the Morning Phalaharam along with Coffee/Milk. You should see the

way the Parakala Swami was doing the Thirumanjana etc. Then I was in constant touch

with Kainkarya Paras of Asmath Acharyan about his journey to Sathyagal

am ( I was given to understand Swami Woke up at 3 Am and did his daily routine and

started the journey ) Swami inspite of his advanced age he told he will attend the

function. Then time was flying and 11.30 Asmath Acharyan was near Sathyagalam , So we

requested H H Rangapriya Swami to Come directly to Cauvery banks where the Avabratha

Snanam was going to take place. Then Swami Desikans Uthsava Vigraham was taken in

procession to Cauvery you should see the way the swami was taken in Vayara nadai (

please excuse me if i have given wrong description. ) Adiyen captured those moments

also in video mode will shortly upload in utube. Then All reached the Avabratha snana

kattam and thank GOD got a Vantage position to capture the Visual treat for you all. By

the Time Asmath Acharyan also reached the venue. Then he saw me and with eye contact

i convey my Namaskaram and My Karunamurthy Blessed me and asked my well being.

Page 9: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

My heart was filled with Joy on seeing asmath Acharyan and Ananda kaneer was flowing

in my eyes .Then Madhavan Bhattar and his brothers conducted the Thirumanjanam to

Swami Desikan with Ksheera,Dhadhi,Madhu etc and finally Haridhara ( Manjal) Powder.

They carried the Svami Desikan then they did Sankalpa and then finally All had holy

Snanam. Then all came back and while Swami came back in procession he was brought

back in same way inside the temple same rhythmic walking style.

Then Asmath Acharyan Arrived and he was received with Poorna kumbha Mariyada. Then

he reached the stage did Mangalasasnam to Uthsavar Kote Varadharaja Swami, Swami

Desikan Uthsavar and Aradhanai Moorthy of Parakala Mutt. Then Maha Mangala Harathi

Started. One side Veda Gosha was being recited. My well wisher Dr.Satakopa Thathachar

Swami of Thooppul (he is serving as Professor in Sanskrit University , Kaladi in Kerala )

came to Sathyagalam after finishing his Sadhas at Srirangam ,he had brought the Malai

Mariyada from Sannidhi of Devadhi Rajan, Deepa Prakashar and Ranganathan. Then he

did the Samarpanam of the Divya Desham Malai Mariyada to Swami Desikan.

Then H H Rangapriya Swami Released three Books. One was Swami Desikas " Dasaavatara

Shostra" brought out by Sudharma Prakashana ( They are the only one who are bringing a

Sanskrit Daily from Mysore since last 40 years in print and now in e-form also). Then Two

Books “Mudalayiram - Middle two Alwar" and Thirumangai Alwar by Sri K R Krishnaswami

mama whose email id is availbale in above mentioned website.

Then Grand finale was

Thadiaradhanai. This year also

Adiyen distributed Swami Desikan Ninra

Thirukolam Pictures free ( Of all the years this years

picture has come out well and thanks to Brother Sri

A. Balaji of King Production who helps me and

advices in website related matter ( He only printed

the pictures at a very reasonable rate since it was for

free distribution) . That picture i will shortly put it in

Swamis websites.

I am sorry I have stolen your precious time.

Now please follow the link and have a visual treat.

Similarly I feel my writing this essay is only HIS sankalpam and the blessings of our Achrya sarva bouman SrI Vedantha Desikan . The three remaining sthothrams in his sthothra grantham 26. Garuda thandakam and 27.Garuda vimsathi and 28. Ethiraja sapthathi ,are discussed in this part 8. About swamy Desikan's 24 Tamil prabandams will be continued with HIS Sankalpam from next week.

26. GARUDA DANDAKAM

When Swamy Desikan was in Kanchipuram, a snake charmer challenged him to prove his capability . He

then let loose a deadly serpent on him . Swamy Desikan then chanted the Garuda Manthra for

God's grace. Garuda emerged immediately from the sky and whisked away the

serpent. The snake- charmer realised his foolishness and his underestimation of

swamy and surrendered fastly before Swami Desikan. He pleaded then to secure the snake as he is completely depending only on that

snake for his livelihood. Swami Desikan with his merciful nature thus composed Garuda

Dhandakam and pleaded for its survival. Garuda came back from the sky with living snake and

flew after dropping it .

Swamy Desikan's Garuda Dhandakam is in dhandaka format with a majestic,

rhythmic style like Raghuvira Gadyam. Dhandam is stick with strong long

footing. There are only seven slokas in this. The first one is prayer to Vainadeyan,

who is with serpents in the whole body considered as person responsible for

Brahma Vidya . Slokas 2 to 5 are in poetic prose split into four quarters . Sloka 6 is

description on structure of Dandaka. The Concluding sloka is palasruthi. The lines

of Garudamagila veda nidathi roodam ,when recited in gigantic manner is sure to

capture all minds. The concluding lines of Garuda dwaja doshaya geetho garuda

thandaka points out that he sings this to please Emberuman with the flag on

Garuda.

Garuda's importance of being hailed in vedas, being the vehicle of Sriman Narayana, being consort of Rudra and Sukeerthy, being an incarnation of Sankarshana, adorning serpents as ornaments, with powers of blessing and granting manthras to devotees are praised well in this sthothram .

27. GARUDA PANCHASATH

When Swamy Desikan meditates Garuda-manthra on the same night of Lord Hayagriva's presense before him.In very next day, Garuda appeared in his dreams and said, there are four persons Sounaka, Bruhaspathi, Narada and Kasyapa who had his direct blessings and the boons of his manthra, the Pancha Varnee. Swamy Desikan then joined those great souls and a sthothram on Garuda was composed to benefit one and all. Swamy Desikan obeyed this Holy order of Garuda immediately and started writing Garuda Panchasath.

Sri Garuda Panchasath, is on Vainatheya with 52 slokas . This sthothram is

composed with five parts each called as 'Varnakas'.

1. Slokas 1 -8 ,Pra-Vyuha Varnaka on Garuda's form in Sri Vaikunta in Vyuha with

Sankarshana,

2.Slokas 9 -25, Amruthaaharana

Varnaka on greatness of Garuda fetching

nectar from Deva Loka.

3.slokas 26-35

NaagadhamanaVarnaka

(Sarpanasa)on Garuda's crushing of serpents

in pathala lokam .

4.slokas 36-45 Parishkaara Varnaka (Alankara )

on the serpents that adorn Garuda's person as

ornaments.Description of snakes given here as

'Audiseshan and Kuligan as kankanams, vasuki as

sacred thread, dakshagan as waist belt, padma, mahapadma as ear rings,

sankabalan as crown '.

5.Slokas 46-51Adhbhutha Varnaka on describing extraordinary talents of

Garuda. Gajendra moksham is highlighted in sloka 47.

Perfection and proper method of chanting this stothra with training from an

Acharyua is good. Otherwise it may yield to adverse effects. The sthothram

begins with explaining the correct method of chanting the Garuda-manthra. In third

sloka hails various parts of Garuda's body .

The fifth sloka may be termed as playing a number game as Eko Vishnu, dweediya

sthree chathurvithitham panchavarni hasyam shadgunya smerasaptha swagathi

animathyashta sampavan navathma and concluding as a person beyond numbers

who gives freedom from fear bayam veeda sankyodaya na is wonderful one.In 52nd

sloka ,Palasruthi , Swamy Desikan tells that one who recites this will be free from

fear of serpents, mental afflictions, diseases, and all their wishes are sure to be

answered favourably. .

28. YATHIRAJA SAPTHATHI

SwamyDesikan came to SriPerumbudur on his way to

SriRangam and composed a sthothra called 'Yathirja

sapthathi' glorifieing all our Acharyas, particularly Sri

Ramanuja in depth

and sought SriRamanuja's blessings, on Chiththirai-Thiruvaadhirai birth star day

of Sri Ramanuja.Yathiraja Sapthathi consists of 74 slokas signifying the number of

the Simhaasanaadhipathis, appointed by Sri Ramanuja. Swamy Desikan who

forms Achrya lineage after Sri Ramanuja which is as follows SrimanNarayana-

SriLakshmi-SriVishwaksenar-SriNammazhvar-SriNathamuni -Sri Uyyakondar -Sri

Manakkalnambi-Sri Yamuna Muni-Sri Perianambi-Sri Ramanuja . After Sri

Ramanuja, Swamy Desikan joined in this lineage. . Sri Ramanuja is referred

in many names such as Yathiraja, Bhashyakarar, Udaiyavar, Emberumanar,

Lakshmanamuni, Ethipathi by Swamy Desikan.

In sloka 11, Ramanuja's physical appearance is well stated, as Yajna Upaveetham

in His chest ,Oordhvapunram (Thiruman kappu in face, and other part of

body ),Tridandam in His hand as a result of the fruit of the Good deeds of three

worlds, a tuft of hair on the Head. He also has a specialty as saviour of the

Vaishnavites, guaranteeing for their salvation, who surrendered unto Him. In sloka

12 , Chakra, Sanghu, Gadha, Khadga, Saarngha, the Lord's five weapons have

unitedly taken the incarnation of Sri Ramanuja and is therefore sure to protect us

with harsh on the enemies of our religion. The works of Ramanuja is detailed from

slokas 13.

In sloka 30, Sri Ramanuja's works are compared to a river furnishing cool waters to a thirst-tortured traveller traversing a dry desert. as (palar) a river of milk to holy personages devoted to the study of spiritual works ,for sruthis as eyes of the Vedas, and form as precious guide for interpretation ,to the activator to the vital nerve-chord. Sri Ramanuja being an incarnation of the Five Weapons of the Lord as panchaprayuthair murare is indicated in sloka 12, as viswakseno yathipathir in sloka 32; and as Dhaththaathreya in sloka 63. In sloka 44 Swamy Desikan Lauds Ramanuja's SriSukthis and debates as an excellent one and states comparing his works with others is like comparing Salt and pachai karpooram in equal metre as lavana vanija karpoorarkam .

In 38th sloka , Victory to Ramanuja for saving the Para Brahman by giving a hand

lift from the clutches of other sects is well said. Slokas 69 &70 are on Ramanuja's

Siddhaantham placed on a Trivedhi pedestal, and his works, like Sri Bhashyam to

guide us. Slokas 71 &72 are on greatness of Yathiraja sapthathi . Slokas 73 & 74 are

palasruthi .In this Swamy Desikan prays to bestow on the reader devotional

intellect with leela Vibhuthi and Nithya Vibhuthi. He states that those who learn the

hymn are sure to find the righteous path as clearly as a myrobalan fruit in the palm

Ullankai nellikkani pola .

During his lifetime Ramanuja wrote Nava rathnangal 1.Sri-Bhasya, 2.Vedanta-

dipa,3. Vedanta-sara, 4.Vedanta-samgraha, three prose works (gadyas):

5.Saranagati-gadya,6. Sriranga-gadya and 7.Vaikuntha-gadya, 8 Gita-bhasya and

9.Nitya-grantha. Swamy Desikan got inspiration from him though he was born

about 130 years after Sri Ramanuja attained parama padam.

VALMIKI RAMAYANA By Dr. Saroja Ramanujam, M.A.,Ph.D , siromani

Balakanda

14. The meeting with Parasurama and return to Ayodhya

Dasaratha started to return to Ayodhya with is sons and their brides when

he saw bad omens and became perturbed, Vasishta assured him that

though there were bad omens denoting evil there were good omens also

which show that the end result will be good. At that time there was a storm

and the earth shook, a great screen of dust covering everywhere, and a

darkness enveloped the earth.

Before they realised what was the cause, Parasurama appeared before

them challenging Rama to string the bow of Vishnu whcih was given to him.

Dasaratha pleaded with him saying that the revenge he took for the killing of

his father Jamadagni by Karthavirya, a kshathriya, by indulging in the

destruction of kshathriyas has ended by his promising Indra not to take up

arms again.Rama was young and newly married and Parasurama should not

harm him.

But Parasurama treated Dasaratha and others as though they were non-

existent and told Rama that Visvakarma made two identical bows and gave

Page 24: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

them to Siva and Vishnu and Rama has broken the former. Parasurama said

if Rama could string the bow of Vishnu then only he will accept the greatness

of Rama.Rama took it up and strung it and placed an arrow asking

Parasurama whether his power of locomotion or the fruit of his penance

should become the target of his arrow . He said that since Parasurama is the

grandson of the sister of Visvamithra he did not want to harm him.

Parasurama felt that he has lost all his prowess and realised the real identity

of Rama . The power of Vishnu which was present in him till then has gone

back to Rama who is the incarnation of Vishnu. Losing his luster Parasurama

told Rama to take away the fruit of his penenca as he needed the power of

locomotion as he had promised Kasyapa, to whom he gave the earth

conquered by killing the kshatriyas, that he would not remain on his land of

after sunset. Rama destroyed the fruit of his penance and he went back to

Mahendraparvata.

Here a question may arise that since Parasurama is considered as one of the

ten incarnations of Vishnu how can he meet Rama and challenge him.

Parasurama was a partial avathaara as the divinity manifested only at the

time of his destruction of kshatiryas . Parasurama signifies the yogi who has

rooted out the inner enemies like kaama and krodha which are portrayed by

the kshatriyas. When sattwa rises to the surface there is peace, denoted by

the gift of the earth to Kasyapa. The axe of Parasurama is viveka and

vairagya, discrimination and detachment, armed with which one can

conquer the inner foes. The incarnation comes to an end on the occasion of

the meeting between Parasurama and Rama when the Lord assumes back

His powers.

After returning to Ayodhya Rama and Sita lived happily for twelve

years.Seetha was like Lakshmi and Rama shone like Vishnu with her, says

Valmiki.' atheeva rAmah SuSubhE athikamayA;vibhuh SriyA

vishnurivAmareSvarah.' Even though they were really Narayana and

Lakshmi, the sage uses the word 'like' because of their assuming human

body.

Thus ends the Balakanda of Valmikiramayana

Life History of Swami Desika (simple version for children)

Background:

Desika is a Sanskrit word which means “Acharya”. In our srivaishnava sampradayam there are

numerous acharyas starting from Nammazhvar to present day acharyas, it is only Swami desika is

addressed respectfully as “Desika”. This is like calling srirangam perumal as nam perumal (in

English Our Perumal) and addressing shatakopan as nam azhvar.

Sri Desika’s original name was Venkata natha. His parents have choosen this name since Desika

was born on a sravanam day, which is the birth star of Thiruppathi perumal, Lord Srinivasa.

Sri Desika was born in the year 1268 CE(Common Era) about 130 years after Bhagavad Ramanuja

attained parama padam. His parents were Sri Ananthasuri and Smt Thothaaramba. He was born in

a place called Thoopul near Kanchi puram.Swami desika’s parents were childless for long time and

one day Lord Srinivasa of Seven Hills,Thiruppathi has ordered them to go for a pilgrimmage to

Thiruppathi.

Those days there were no buses or trains to travel so Sri Anatasuri and his wife walked from

Kanchipuram to Thiruppathi and climbed the Hills and had the darshan of the Perumal. That night

they were resting in a Mandapam near temple. The Lord Srinivasa appeared in their dream as a

small vaishanva boy and gave smt Thothaaramba a golden bell and she swallowed the bell in the

dream. Next day the archakas did not find the bell in the perumal sannidhi and they were worried

and started searching for it. Perumal told in a heavenly voice that the bell has been given to Smt

Thothaaramba and she will deliver a son who will be a great scholar like Bhagavad Ramanuja, who

will firmly re establish the supremecy of our srivaishnava sampradayam. To remind us this

incident, even today there is no bell in the perumal sannidhi.Only the huge bell suspended in the

front hall is used while doing thiruvaradanam.

Birth and Younger days:

After some time sri Desika was born. He was named as Venkatanatha by his maternal uncle Sri

Appullar. Sri Appullar is his acharya too. When Sri Desika was a small boy of five years old he was

taken to Kanchi Varadarajar Temple where one acharya was giving lecture on Ramanuja’s Sri

Bhashyam. Sri Appullar and the young boy desika went and prostrated to this scholar and he has

stopped the lecture and blessed them. Sri Appullar and desika was about to leave and the acharya

wanted to continue his lecture but he forgot where he has stopped. Although desika was mere a

boy of 5 years he reminded Sri Nadadhur Ammal the vaishanva scholar who was giving lecture

and every one assembled there were astonished at the brilliance of Desika at this tender age. Sri

Nadadhur ammal blessed Sri Desika and he told every one that Sri Desika will be a great scholar

who will firmly establish the supremecy of our sampradayam following the footstep of Bhagavad

Ramanuja. He also instructed Sri Appullar to teach desika all vedas, divya prabandham and other

sastras. Even today we can see a painting in the varadaraja temple reminding us this incident.

At the age of 7, after upanayanam Sri Appullar started teaching the Vedas, Sastras,Sri bhashya

and divya prabandham. He was surprised at the brilliance of swami desika as he has grasped in no

time what ever taught to him.The elders were wondering whether Sri Desika is the combined re

incarnation of earlier acharyas like Ramanuja,Natha muni and Alavandar. At the age of 20, Sri

Desika has mastered all the sastras and became a scholar.

Page 33: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

At the age of 21, Sri Desika was married to a beautiful girl called Thirumangai or Kanaka valli.Sri

Appullar taught Desika the sacred Garuda mantra. Sri Desika has started his family life as ordered

in the Sastras. He was strictly performing all the duties required by a Srivaishnava and living on

uncha vritti.ie their daily supply of rice and vegetables will be given by his disciples.A brahmana

was supposed to do Veda adhyayanam and teach every one in the village. They will not go to work

as we do these days.Their needs will be taken care by his students who learn from him. This is the

system which was in place 500 years back in India.

Desika in Thiruvaheendra puram:

After the death Sri Appullar Swami desika wanted to chant the garuda

mantra taught to him for many days without food and sleep to receive

the blessings of the divine bird Garuda on which Sri Narayana travels.

It is said in Scriptures that the Garuda is Veda swaroopi. Desika went to

Thiruvahendra puram and climbed the small hill there and started

chanting the mantra. Garuda was pleased with the devotion of Desika

and blessed him with Hayagreeva mantra and instructed him to chant

the Hayagreeva mantra continously to receive the blessings of

Haygreeva. Then Lord Hayagreeva appeared before desika and blessed

him with the nector flowing from HIS mouth. Lord Hayagreeva took

the seat of Swami Desika’s tip of the tounge as prayed by desika. Also Hayagreeva gave an idol of

himself for desika’s daily worship. This idol or vigraha is still being preserved in the Devanatha

temple in Thiruvaheendra puram. Swami desika composed famous Haygreeva stotram,

Devanayaka panchashat in sanskrit and achchutha shatakam in Prakriut and Mummanikkovai and

Nava mani maalai in Tamil.

Swami desika had a special liking to this divya desam and he came once again after touring to

Kanchi, Srirangam,Thiruppathi and other shrines in North India. We will see these incidents later.

Desika in Kanchipuram:

Sri Desika came back to Kanchipuram and composed various stotras explaining the concept of

prapatti or surrender. The stotras are Nyasa vimshati,Nyasa dashakam and Nyasa tilakam in

sanskrit and Adaikkalappaththu and artha panchakam in Tamil.

Swami desika was mesmorised at the beauty of Varadha raja perumal of Kanchi and composed

fifty slokas on HIM.He also wrote stotras of various perumals visiting the temples in and around

Kanchi puram.

In the Year 1317CE,in the Tamil month of AvaNi, Sri Varadha raja perumal blessed swami desika

with a son who was name as Varadhacharya. His birth star was rohiNi which is the same as that of

Lord Krishna. His son followed the footsteps of Swami desika and shined as his father.

Swami desika then went to Thiruppathi and here he composed the beautiful stotra called Daya

shatakam. Lord Srinivasa has blessed swami desika conferring the title Vedantaacharya. Then

swami desika went to Badri,Ayodhdhi, kaasi,Nepal and other places in North India on foot to visit

the temples over there.

Sri Desika in Sri rangam:

All the Srivaishnava acharyas have special love to Srirangam lord Sri Ranganatha. Sri Ramanuja

stayed here for long years. Swami desika was asked to come to Sri rangam by other acharyas, for

a debate to prove the correctness of Our sampradayam which is strictly in accrodance with the

Page 34: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

scriptures. Swami desika came to Srirangam and on the way he halted at Sri Perumpudhur the

birth place of Bhagavad Ramanuja and composed a stotra on Sri ramanuja to seek his blessings to

win in the debate. This slokam is called Yatirja saptati which glorifies all our acharyas and Sri

Ramanuja in particular.

In Sri rangam the debate with schloars of other sampradayam went for 7 days and finally Sri

Desika demolished every argument of the opponents. The scolars who have debated with Sri

Desika have accepted the defeat and become his disciples. This discussion has been compiled as

Satha dhudhaNi.

Lord Ranganatha was pleased with their beloved child Sri Desika’s intelligence and conferred him

the title of “ Vedanta Desikan” Sri Ranga naayaki thaayaar conferred the title of “ Sarva tantra

swatantrar” which means that he is master of all arts, crafts. The other acharyas assembled there

were pleased with this and declared that Sri desika is indeed deserved of this honorory titles.

Swami’s visit to Melkote, Karnataka.

In the year 1327, Srirangam city was invaded by Muslims. Malik kafur the General of Allauddin,

Sultan of Delhi came to Srirangam to rob the temple and kill the satvic devotees. Fear gripped in

the minds of every one and they afraid how to preserve the glory of the temple. It was decided

that Swami desika will travel to Karnataka along with the manuscripts of Sri Bhashya commentry

along with the sons of Sri Sudarshana bhattar, a great acharya who wrote commentry for Sri

Bashya. Other acharyas left to Thiruppathi with the idol of Ranganatha. The temple was closed

and many bhagavathas were killed by the brutal invaders and even Swami desika has to hide

among the corpses (dead bodies) for one night before travelling to Karnataka.

Swami desika while at Karnataka composed a stotra called “abhithi sthava” praying to Sri

Ranganatha to restore the glory of Sri rangam. Swami was crying for the death of many acharyas

and bhagavathas by the ruthless invaders. We can even see the place where he stayed in

Karnataka and here the vigraham of Swami desika is unique as he is in standing posture as if he

was on his toes ever ready to travel back to Srirangam.

After 12 years when the muslims were thrown out of Srirangam Swami desika came back to

Srirangam.

Back at Srirangam:

Swami came to srirangam and it was time for yearly utsavams when the entire divya prabandham

will be recited in 20 days. The first ten days the utsavam is in the day and the next 10 days in the

night. Since this utsavam was stopped for many years due to Muslim invasion, the orthodox

people objected to recitation of Divya prabandham since it is in Tamil and only Sanskrit vedas

should be recited. They also objected to install vigrahas of Azhvars because they were just human

beings and many of them were not even Brahmins. Swami desika argued with them at length

proving that the divya prabandham is nothing but the essence of Vedas and Upanishads and the

Azhvars are great devotees of Sriman Narayana and they are fit to be worshipped in side the

temple. Finally the orthodox devotees agreed with Sri Desika and the utsavam has been

celebrated in a grand manner. Swami was pained to see the objections and to make sure no such

problems in the future he has got the details of the utsavam written in a stone and installed in the

temple. Sri Ranganatha was pleased with this and commended that the Thaniyan glorifying swami

desika “Ramanuja daya patram..” should be recited every day in the temple before starting the

prabandham recitation.

Page 35: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

While at Sri rangam swami has composed the famous Bhagavad dyana sopanam glorifying the

beauty of the Sriranganatha from the feet to the head. This stotra is like Amalanaadhi piran of

Thiruppaanaazhvar.

Some vidhwans challenged that whether swami desika can compose 1000 hymns in praise of Lord

Ranganatha in one day. Swami has accepted the challenge and he prayed to Ranganatha to bless

him to compose 1000 stotras and the Lord has commended that sri Desika should compose the

stotra on the Divine Sandals (padhukas). Swami did not write anything in the day as he was busy

in teaching etc and in the night also he slept till 4 O’clock in the morning. Then he started writting

down the stotras and in less than 3 hours he has composed 1008 stotras on the padhukas. Even a

fast recital of the entire stotras will take more than 6 hours and swami has composed them in

such a short time since he was “Kavitarkika simham” which means lion among the poets.

Swami at Srivilliputtur:

Swami desika went on a pilgrammage to South and visited many divya desams in Kerala and

Madurai and while he was at Srivilliputtur he has composed the famous Godha sthuthi. Swami

had special bhakthi to Andal and this stotram glorifies Andal. She has commended that this stotra

should be recited during her utsavam along with divya prabandham.

Swami’s Vairagyam:

Some of the local people in Kachipuram felt bad that a great master like Sri Desika is doing uncha

vrutti ie begging for grains. They thought of mixing gold coins along with rice and offered him

since Desika won’t accept money or Gold if given separately. Sri Desika did not notice this trick

and came home and gave the rice to his wife for making prasadam. She is also a simple maiden

and never seen gold coins in her life. She called Desika and asked what the glittering coins are.

Swami desika was suprised at this and told her that they are vermins and separated them by a

dharpa grass, as he did not even want to touch the gold coins.

One of Swami desika’s friend (Vidyaranya) during their school days became the minister of

Vijayanagara kingdom. He heard about the poverty of Sri Desika and wanted to help him.So he

has sent in a message asking desika to come to the Kingdom to receive gifts from the king.Swami

desika has refused to this request and sent him the reply in a poem called Vairagya panchakam.

Swami’s bhakthi:

Once a young boy wanted some money for his marriage and approched the wealthy people in

Kanchipuram. They were jealous of Sri desika’s simplicity and not seeking any financial help from

them. Just to embarraas our swami they have told that only desika can give lots of money

because he is rich. The boy did not know the evil intention of the jealous people and went to

swami desika for financial help. We all know that desika is not having any money but he took the

young boy to the Thayar sannidhi and started reciting Sri Stuthi and lo and behold..

It has started raining and rain of gold coins from the sky. Swami desika thanked the thayar for her

mercy and told the boy to take as much he wants and he did not take any coin for himself. The

jealous people were shocked at this incident and came running to seek the pardon of swami

desika. Once a snake charmer came and challenged desika that whether he can control his

poisonous snakes and sri desika drew a chalk line on the ground and recited some mantra. None

of the snake could cross over the line drawn by swami but one ferocious snake crossed over to

harm swami.Sri Desika recited the Garuda mantra and instantly Garuda came and took away all

the snakes. The Snake Charmer begged to swami desika to give back his snakes since it is the only

lively hood of him. Swami desika again prayed to Garuda and it brought the snakes again.

Page 36: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

One magician confronted with swami and drank the water from the pond. With his magic he

made swami’s stomach to bulge as the magician drank water from the pond. Swami was feeling

extreme pain and understood the reason quickly. Desika just scratched the pillar near by with his

fingernails and the water flowed out of the pillar. The magician was astonished with the super

magic of Desika and begged his pardon.

Swami Desika as Sarva tantra (Master of all arts, crafts):

There are many incidents in Swami desika’s life which prove that he is not just an acharya or

poet.He was well versed with many other crafts and the following three incidents prove this

point.

Once a mason challenged swami desika whether he can construct a well with the bricks supplied

by him. Swami desika accepted the challenge and the mason gave broken and irregular shaped

bricks to swami but he nicely arranged them and finished the well construction. This well is still

existing in Thiruvahendrapuram.

Once a sculptor challenged swami whether he can make an idol of himself and fitted in the

pedastal that was made by the sculptor. Swami made an idol and the sculptor tried to fix it in the

pedastal and could not do so.He thought that the idol was wrong and tried to chisel some part of

the idol to fix it. Blood flowed out of desika’s corresponding part of the body where he chiseled

out. The sculptor accepted that the pedastal is of wrong size and then swami desika corrected the

pedastal and installed the idol on it. This image is even today available in Thiruvahendara puram.

Once a shoe maker challenged that whether desika can mend his sandal and swami accepted this

challenge and to every one’s surprise he made the sandal quickly as if he was a original shoe

maker.People are astonished at swami desika’s knowledge in various crafts.

Swami’s last days:

Swami desika lived 101 years and he felt the time has come for him to go the spritual abode of

Narayana. He went to Sriranganatha and took his permission. His disciples and his son were

feeling the pain of his separation and cried. Swami desika consoled them and instructed them to

continue their divine works and follow the ramanuja dharshanam. In the year 1369 he kept his

head in the lap of his son Kumara varadhachariar and left his mortal coil while listening to the

chanting of thiruvaymozhi and Upanishads.

Later Sri Ranganayaki thayar ordered that a sannidhi should be made for Swami desika close to

her sannidhi inside the temple. Also it is believed that she ordered that no other acharya sannidhi

will be made hereafter inside the temple as a mark of respect to this great acharya, which is being

followed to this day.One can see the desikan sannidhi in front of the thaayaar sannidhi in

Srirangam.

Thaniyans on Swami desika:

A number of 'Thanians ' (laudatory dedication verses) were dedicated to him.

(1) His son Kumara Varadacharya has composed a thaniyan on swami desika. We are reciting this

thaniyan before reciting any sanskrit stotra of swami desikan.

"Sriman Venkata Natharyah Kavitarkika Kesari |

Vedantacharya Varyo Mey Sannidhattam Sadaa Hridhi ||"

Page 37: OM NAMO BHAGAVATHE VISHVAK SENAYA NAMAxa.yimg.com/kq/groups/7138778/1426906515/name... · ( Meaning ) : DharmA having the VedAs for its sole basis , that which is not ... AthAtha:

The meaning of this verse is” "the great lion of poets and the great preceptor of Vedanta (that

Swami Venkatanatha was) should reside in his heart always."

(2) Another one was by his disciple Brahma Tantra Swatantra which says:-

"Ramanuja Daya Patram Gnana Vairaghya Bushanam |

Srimad Venkata Natharyam Vande Vedanta Desikam ||"

We recite this taniyan before starting divya prabandham. The meaning of this taniyan is "I salute

the great Venkata Natha also called Vedanta Acharya and Lion among poets and logicians and

who was well adorned by both Knowledge and discretion and who well deserved the grace of

Srimad Ramanuja":

(3) There is another taniyan on Swami Desika which is recited before reciting any of the desika

prabandham

"Seeronru Tooppul Thiruvenkata mudaiyan

par onra chonna pazhamozhiyul- OronRu

thane amaiyadhO Dharaniyil Vazhvorkku

Vanerap PomaLavum Vazhvu ||"

The meaning of this taniyan is " For a person who desires to ascend up to the Heavens, even a

single statement of the great Acharya, Tooppul Tiuvenkadamudaiyan (Vedanta Desika) uttered by

him for the benefit of humanity would be sufficient to lift him up to his desired goal

Conclusion:

Swami desika was a poet, philosopher, logician and he took the task of upholding the concepts

preached by Sri.Ramanuja. It is because of him the Ramanuja dharshanam is being recogonised by

the world. Even the critics of Swami desika have suprised at his knowledge and logical reasoning

and praise him for his masterey in every form of work be it drama, poetry or commentry in either

Tamil, Sanskrit and Mani pravala. It is told that he was proficient in 8 languages.

No acharya among the followers of Sri Ramanuja fought for the rightful place for Divya

prabandham as did swami desika. It was he who re established the recitation of divya

prabanhdam in Srirangam and other temples.

Swami desika has composed more than 100 works and even if one wants to read all of them it will

take more than 100 years. His Sanskrit is considered to be most sweet only after to Maha kavi

Kalidasa.

His Tamil prabandhams are equally sweet and he has brough the essence of Vedas to his simple

Tamil prabandhams and translated the tamil pranbadham Tiruvaymozhi to sanskrit.

Let us pray to this great acharya and seek his blessings to read and understand his works/Storas,

which will be the most pleasing kaimkaryam to Perumal and Thayar.

SRIVAISHN AVISM

PERIAzHvAR’S GREATNESS Periazhvar was born in Srivilliputtur, as the fifth son of Mukunda Bhattar and Padmavathi Ammangar, in the star Swathi, and was called Vishnu Chitta. He is considered an amsa of Garuda. Even when young, Vishnu Chitta was seized with a desire to serve the Lord.

There are many types of services (kainkaryam) one can do for God, said Kidambi Narayanan. One way is through Nama Sankeerthanam. Another is by cleaning temples. God welcomes any kainkaryam of His devotees. Vishnu Chitta decides to string garlands for Lord Vatapatrasayee, the presiding deity

in Srivilliputtur temple. He sets up a garden with all kinds of fragrant flowers, which he plucks everyday and makes garlands for the Lord. This Pushpa Kainkaryam is especially dear to the Lord. In His Krishna avatara, He and Balarama, on their way to meet Kamsa, first visit the house of a flower seller. The flower seller, who is moved, offers Krishna a garland of flowers, and the Lord says that this Pushpa Kainkaryam is the one he likes best among all the ways of serving Him.

Later Vishnu Chitta becomes the foster father of Andal, and unknowingly he adorns the Lord with garlands that his daughter has tried out on herself.

Swami Desika says Vishnu Chitta later came to be known as Periazhvar because the Lord liked the garlands worn by Andal very much, and Periazhvar was instrumental in bringing them to Him.

One of the thaniyans for Periazhvar salutes him as the one, who, though he had not formally learnt the scriptures from an Acharya, established the supremacy of Lord Narayana. He is the father-in-law of Lord Ranganatha. The next thaniyan says we should bear on our heads the feet of those who say the word ‘Srivilliputtur’, for, it is the birthplace of Periazhvar and Andal. The third

thaniyan says Periazhvar’s feet are our refuge.

An instance of Acharyas showing the same motherly concern for the Lord as Periazhvar showed is seen in the case of Mudaliandan and Koorathazvar. When the Adhyayana utsavam comes to a close in Srirangam, they embrace each other in relief that the Lord has emerged unscathed by evil eyes.
