Origins

The origins of this event come from Olympia, a place in the wilderness dedicated to the god Zeus and his wife Hera. The modern day lighting of the flame in Greece is in the same place where the ancient temple of Hera was built.

The Olympic flame is based on Prometheus nicking the flame from Zeus to give to mankind. The fire itself was seen by the ancients as a spark of the sun and so much of the opening ceremony which continues to this day is basically sun worship. By giving fire to mankind, the ‘carrying of the torch’ was seen as man’s sudden awareness that he had a ‘divine spark’ within and allowed the potential to become gods themselves. The symbol of torch bearer can be seen on many statues with the most famous being the statue of liberty.

London Olympics

2012

So finally the Olympics have arrived in London and I have a feeling it’ll be out of this world for many reasons. It should be a fantastic spectacle and as it’s on home turf, then Team GB may get the inspiration to perform above themselves and perhaps even become like a god even just for a few moments. The next pages will highlight the main British hopes for medals.

Triple Olympic champion

sailor Ben Ainslie was the

first of 8,000 torchbearers

to lift the flame

Men’s 100 metresThe main event of the whole games bases itself around the

men’s 100 metres final. In the last games 3 billion people (aka half the

planet) watched the 100m final.

The race produces the fastest man on Earth and I have a feeling that world

records will fall this year. If the Jamaicans, Usain Bolt (aka the ‘Lightning Bolt’)

and Asafa Powell run anything like they have been then the world record will

fall. Usain is in cracking form and continues to get stronger winning recently

his third race in succession at the Bislet games in Oslo. As he’s World record

and Olympic record holder in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x100 metres

then expect him to be well up for wining once more.

In China in 2008 and in Germany at the World Championships he broke the world records at

100m and 200m respectively where they currently stand at 9.58 seconds for the 100 metres

and 19.19 seconds for the 200 metres.

America’s Tyson Gay has a chance of upsetting the two Jamaicans and winning the final, he’s

the only man to beat Bolt in any final over the last 3 years and could be a good outside bet to

win again. He’s been injured in the last couple of years but just won the American trials and

so seems to be back to somewhere near his best. Still can’t see him beating Bolt though.

Yohan Blake from Jamaica can also undermine Bolt in the final. He’s current 100m

World Champion as he took full advantage of Bolts disqualification in the games.

Keep an eye out for the Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre who’s just appearing on

the scenes in the 100 m and 200 m. Beating Britain’s Mark Lewis Francis in

the Euro championships last year and could at least reasonably

challenge Bolt, Powell and Gay.

Brits in the race could be either Adam Gemili who’s a hot prospect

at only 18 years of age and as of 11th of June the only one of our

current sprinters to have broken the 10.18 s qualification time.

Dwain Chambers returns to the Olympics after his ban for illegal drug

use was served. Gemili, Chambers and Lewis Francis may get to

the final but it’s highly unlikely they’ll get anywhere near

the medals.

Men’s 4x100 metre relayJamaica dominates this with 4

of the best 100 metre finalists in

the world. The only way I can

see them losing the gold is

if they drop the baton.

Men’s 110 metres hurdlesCuban world record holder Dayron Robles should be up for gold but World Champion Jason Richardson will want it as well. Andy Turner represents Britain here and as he’s current European Champion and recently won Bronze at the 2011 World Championships, he might have a chance at sneaking a medal.

Men’s

200 metres

Both Bolt and Yohan Blake

can win the gold here with

Usain the current world record

holder and Blake running the

2nd fastest undermine

Bolt in the final.

Men’s

400 metres

American Jeremy Wariner is

currently been coached by the one and

only Michael Johnson who dominated

the 200 m and 400 m in the early

noughties. He can blow hot and cold and

lost out to his US rival LaShawn Merritt

back in the 2008 Olympics. Wariner has

still recorded the 3rd fastest time

ever in the 400 metres and if he

does so again he can win

gold in London.

Women’s

100 metres

Keep an eye out for Brit

Jodie Williams in the 100m and

200m events. She’s only 17 but

she could spring a few surprises in

the games. She’s won just about

everything at junior level and has

now made the step up to the main

events. Definitely one for the future

and with the inspiration of the

crowd she may be in with a

chance for a medal.

Women’s

110 metres

hurdles

Australian World Champion

Sally Pearson dominates the 100m hurdle

event and considering she had been

travelling for 29 hours and still jet lagged,

this in itself should make her rivals

shudder with fear.

Britain’s own American, Tiffany Porter has

got a good chance of getting a medal as

does Jessica Ennis. Neither girl will get

close to the gold which will surely

go to Sally Pearson.

Defending Olympic Champion, Britain’s

Christine Ohuruogu, can challenge for a

medal as well. After struggling with injuries for

3 years she recently came back into contention

to help Britain win the 4x400m relay in March.

Britain’s Kelly Sotherton will feature here while

taking a break from her Heptathlon activities.

The British women will be up against

Amantle Montsho who is the current

world champion and Sanya Richards-

Ross of the United States.

MarathonPaula Radcliffe returns after

having a child, and she hopes to

regain the form that made her a

hot favourite for the 2004 and 2008

Olympics. She’s 38 now so this will

surely be her last hurrah but I

think she wanted to have one

more go as it was based

in England.

5000 metres

This event is dominated by Ethiopia with

10 of the 12 in the recent Bislett games in Oslo

being from that country. Ethiopian, Kenenisa

Bekele (world record holder) who won the 5000

and 10,000 metres in China 4 years ago is back

as well as his compatriot Dejen Gebremeskel.

But luckily there is one Britain who is

more than capable of gaining Gold.

Mo Farah has already run the fastest 5000 m

this year and beat Bekele by 5 seconds.

He also specialises in the 10000 metres.

Mo is current World Champion and

has every chance to stop the

dominance of the Ethiopians.

Women’s 1500 metres

Britain has two athletes capable of gaining medals.Winner of a Silver medal in the 2011 World Championships, Hannah England must fancy her chances of gaining a medal. In the 2011 final she came from 7th to grab 2nd in the final lap.

Lisa Dobriskey gained Silver in the 2009 World Championships and came 4th in the last Olympics. She also has a personal best only bettered by the Gold Olympian Kelly Holmes.

Men’s 400

metre hurdles

Britain’s Dai Greene is in rich form

and is the 2nd fastest British man at

this event. He is also the current World,

Commonwealth and European champion

so he must be in with a chance

for a medal.

Women’s long jump

Representing Britain in this discipline is Shara Proctor, who originally comes from one of the British colonies of Anguilla. She’s recently beaten both World Champion Brittney Reese (US) and Olympic champion Maureen Higa Maggi (Brazil).

HeptathlonBritain’s Jessica Ennis is the

current favourite for Heptathlon

gold. She’s current World and

European Champion in Heptathlon

and also runs in the 100m hurdles.

She missed the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to stress

fracture injury and will definitely want to win her first Olympics.

Winning gold at the world Championships in 2009, she gained

silver 2 years later. In 2010 she won the 60m hurdles against

specialists and world champions of that discipline and she

continues to dominate this year.

Jessica is the complete athlete as she has to excel in so many

disciplines. Hurdles, Shot put, Javelin and High jump being

part of the Heptathlon line-up.

At 35 Kelly Sotherton is one of oldest

athletes at London 2012, but as

this will probably be her last

hurrah then she may spring

a few surprises.

Men’s triple jump

Britain’s Phillips Idowu is

current World, European and

Commonwealth champion

and has a great chance of

getting gold in London.

Born in Hackney, he rose to

prominence in 2000. He

won the Silver in Beijing 4

years ago, Gold in the World

Championships in 2009 and

Silver again in 2011.

CYCLINGTrack Cycling

Sir Chris Hoy gained 3 Gold’s at the Olympics in 2008 and he will no doubt feature heavily here. He won Gold at the 2012 World Championships and is in fine form. He will be hungry for more medals to add to his incredible collection of 4 Olympic Gold’s and 11 World Championship Gold’s.Victoria Pendleton (MBE) will want to win again in the women’s individual sprint event. She’s in red hot form as well after winning gold at the 2012 World Championships and must be clear favourite in London too.Peter Kennaugh was part of the gold winning team of team pursuit in 2012 Australia.Ed Clancy won gold in the team pursuit back in 2008 and will look to do so again as he’s just won gold in Australia in the world championships there.

Track Cycling & BMX

Shanaze Reade crashed in the last Olympics and as she has won the last 3 BMX World Championships on the trot and has 2 golds and one silver in Track cycling at the World championship, she will be desperate to gain Olympic glory, especially as its on home turf.

Chris Hoy

Victoria Pendleton

Road Cycling In Road Cylcing we have many British contenders for medals. Mark Cavendish is the 2011 World Road Champion, Nicole Cooke won gold in the road race in the 2008 Olympics and Emma Pooley won silver in 2008 in the time trial and was World Time Trial Champion in 2010.At 24 Lizzie has won just about everything at such an early age and could continue to dominate for another decade. She won Gold in the team event in 2009 despite it being here 2nd ever appearance in a senior world event.

She’ll be in the Omnium which is a new event featuring 5 different gruelling events which has been created for the games.

SailingTeam GB should challenge for at least 4 medals and as many as 9. Gold could come in 6 events. In the last 3 Olympic games Britain has topped the medal count in sailing.Ben Ainslie is a legend in sailing and started at the age of

4. Born into a sailing family he won his first race in the World championship back in 1993 at the tender age of 16. He likes to give himself challenges and so after winning Olympic gold in the laser

class in 1996 and 2000 and World Championship Golds in 1998 and 99 he moved class to the Finn. In the Finn class he won the World

Championship in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2008. Disqualified in 2011 when leading the field, after threatening a photographer getting in the way of his

boat (fair play as far as I’m concerned) he will definitely want to win on home soil. Iain Percy has dominated sailing for a decade and is known as one of the best in the world. Winning Gold as far back as the Sydney Olympics in

2000 he has gone on to win Gold in the Olympics of 2008 and Gold in the World Championships in 2002 and 2010Winner of Gold in 2008, Paul Goodison will want to win in London once more. Sailing in the Laser class he has also won the World Championships in 2009 and has a host of other European medals.Paired with Iain Percy, Andrew Simpson won Gold in 2008 and went on to win the World championship in 2010. The pair will fancy their chances at winning once more in 2012.

DivingTom Daley is the overwhelming favourite for Gold in the individual 10m platform event and he’ll also fancy his chances at the 10m

synchro as well.

RowingZac Purchase and Mark Hunter - This pair won the Olympic Gold for lightweight double scull back in 2008 and World Championships in 2007 and 2011 so will definitely want to win on home soil.

Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins in the women’s double scull will also be there or thereabouts in the medal hunt.

Canoe slalom

David Florence in the C1 class won Silver in 2008 and could get the gold in 2012.Campbell Walsh has won Silver in the K1 in the past and with a bit of luck and with the crowd behind him, he might go all the way.

Canoe sprint

Tim Brabants returns to defend his Olympic crown in the K1 1000m. In the K1 200m Ed McKeever is 2010 World Champion so there’s a possibility of a gold there as well.

SwimmingThere is a wealth of British swimmers well capable of gaining gold in the pool. Rebecca Adlington won 2 golds in the Freestyle back in 2008 and so she became the first woman to win 2 golds for a hundred years exactly. In the 10km event, Team GB won 2 silvers and a bronze and they’ll

hope to go one better this time. Keri-Anne Payne won silver and since gone on to claim gold in 2009 at the World Aquatics

Championships and gold at the World Championships.Others to watchMichael Phelps won 8 gold medals in the 2008 Olympics

to add to his 6 gold and 2 silvers from 2004. He’ll be up against rival Ryan Lochte again and this will provide a massive spur and will mean that world records will be broken once more. Of the rivalry Phelps should just edge it.

Gemma Spofforth came forth and out of the medals in 2008 which must have spurred her on as she then became World Champion in 2009, smashing the world record as well.

OTHER SPORTSFootball

There’s also a bit of football going on and for the first time since 1912 a Great Britain team is competing for honours. Much is being made of the inclusion of Goldenballs himself, David Beckham. Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy will join him as the senior players picked. Group A: Great Britain, Senegal, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay - Great Britain and current South American Champions

Uruguay should go through to the next rounds here. Group B: Mexico, North Korea, Gabon and Switzerland - Mexico and Switzerland should progress.Group C: Brazil, Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand - Brazil and Egypt should pass through this group fairly easily.Group D: Spain, Japan, Honduras and Morocco - Spain and Japan should just about edge through here.

TennisAndy Murray has a chance at Olympic glory, its just a pity that the Serb Novak Djokovic and Spain’s Rafa Nadal are in the race for Gold as well. Murray also wants to play in the men’s doubles and mixed doubles and if he does win will be the first player in the modern era to win in all three.

BasketballThe USA will want to win this desperately as they seek to defend their Olympic title won in 2008. Major NBA stars such as Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant should also feature.

Spain will have Pau Gasol, amongst their squad and will be hard to beat.

TriathlonAlistair Brownlee has won World Championships in the past and will challenge for a medal once more.

In the women’s event, World Champion Helen Jenkins can also challenge for gold.

TaekwondoFor some reason, Aaron Cook has not been picked for London 2012. As he’s currently ranked number one in the world this seems like an oversight. ‘Cook would have been selected if the criteria was on performance’, GB Taekwondo selector, Dr Steve Peters, said. What the hell they’re playing at if it isn’t based on performance is anyone’s guess.

Boxing

Simon Vallily in the

Heavyweight class is one

to keep an eye on and

might even win Gold.

In Women’s boxing,

Savannah Marshall will defend

her title at middleweight.

GymnasticsDan Keatings has a chance for an Olympic medal as does Louis Smith and Dan Purvis.

Beth Tweddle in the women’s uneven bars has a good chance at Gold as well.

Modern Pentathlon

Heather Fell won Olympic Silver in 2008 and will want to go one better in London. She has subsequently won Silver at the World Championships in

2010 and so will challenge for

honours.

Women’s football

Great Britain can certainly challenge for a medal. They were beaten in the final of the European Championships in 2010 by yup you guessed it…Germany.
