This is a method of loery designed to create random pairings between two sets of any number of things, as long as the
number of elements in each set is the same. It is used in Japan, China and Korea.
In the task below, there are 4 people and 4 ages.
Students need to draw two horizontal lines between each two vercal lines. The lines can be placed anywhere AS LONG
AS they do not tough horizontal lines in the next column.
Students use a colour pencil to mark a pathway down from person 1. Every me they get to a horizontal line they must go
across, then down again, and across etc unl they nd out the age of the person ( they reach the boom).
Using dierent coloured pencils can help. Lines can be coloured more than once.
As the locaon of each students lines will be random, answers will vary.
Students then
complete thestatements for
each person in
numerical order.
Go down
At horizontal
line, must go
across
Go down again

1 Students sit in big circle on chairs, except one-ONI
2 All students are given card with info on vocab word, script, image . ( The
card could be a playing card or a ashcard already made)
3 ONI leaves room
4 All students put heads down on laps
5 Teacher randomly selects ~4 students by tapping head. Students sit back up
do not let on if they were tapped.
6 ONI comes back in and randomly asks individual students set queson
egor
( I always say they must alternate boy, girl, boy etc.)
7
Students respond with info on card ( eg.) UNLESS they
were tapped by the teacher. They respond with HACHIPACHI! The signal to
MOVE!
8 All students must get out of their chair and move somewhere else (more
than one chair away!) ONI quickly sits down. ( RULE: no pushing!)
9 One students misses out on a chair and so become new ONI
10 Remaining students pass their card around circle in clockwise order, so they
must read a new card!
11 Game connues students hear the set queson many mes!!!
12 NOTE : If a student becomes ONI twice they are out of the game!
This deters those who want to be the ONI!

You will need :
A set of EVOLUTION picture cards ( or SMART notebook page showing order of
evoluon!) The evoluon picture cards are included in this resource.
A set of small playing cards are suitable. All students given a card. It is OK if 2
students have the same card.
AIM: to be the rst to evolve into the Karate Kid!
HOW TO PLAY
Teacher demonstrates acons to represent animals in the evoluon ladder, starng
with snake. ( see picture cards for explanaon of acons)
Students pracce acons as teacher points to pictures.
All students stand, push chairs in.
On START, all students make SNAKE acon and walk around to nd another SNAKE
to talk to. They take it in turns to ask and answer, for example,
Then they SWAP cards. This is important so they get a dierent piece of informaon.
Then they do JANKENPON.
Winner: moves up ladder and begins making acon of next animal so as to nd a
new partner
Loser: moves down ladder ( but if SNAKEjust stays SNAKE)
Must nd a new partner with same acon and repeat process.
TEACHER play too!! That way you can check students are actually saying sentences
and NOT JUST DOING JANKENPON!
This is a noisy game but really is fun and there is much queson answer pracce
involved.
Following are the animal pictures I use.obviously any pictures are ne.
Use the playing cards
from any of the card
sets
