When Lindsey Vonnsbalky knee forced herto pull out and mensstars Bode Miller andTed Ligety got off toslow starts on the

    World Cup circuit,

the U.S. Alpine team appeared headed for alackluster showing in Sochi. But Miller andLigety have turned things around recently,as has Julia Mancuso, the womens star

who could emerge from Vonns shadowwith another showing like her twosilver medals in Vancouver. Youngslalom phenomenon MikaelaShiffrin is having a break-out

    year, winning the slalomworld championship.

    Eventdescriptions

The crown jewel of alpineskiing, this race is run on a

steep slope that features long, straight lines and sweepingturns. Skiers can reach speedsof 75 mph. Negotiating jumpsis the single-most determin-ing factor in speed events. Tomaintain speed, the skieradopts the tuck position knees bent into the chest andhands in front to keep

    balance and minimize windresistance.

Fewer gates on acourse that isflatter, it requiresskiers to makerapid movementsthat call ontechnical ability, but at greaterspeeds than inthe slalom.

    Downhill

    Slalom

Giantslalom Also a speed event, it

combines downhillwith giant slalomtechnique. It is runon a shorteneddownhill coursewith added gates to

obtain a minimumof 35 changes formen and 30 forwomen.

    Super-G

A test of speed andtechnical skiing, itconsists of one downhilland one slalom run. Thefastest combined timewins. Its the only eventthats different than in

2006, when thecombined included adownhill and twoslalom runs.

    Super Combined

A shorter, technical race markedby gates on a course featuringrapid turns. The course consists ofopen (horizontal) and closed(vertical) gates, two or threechicanes (three to five closed gatesin quick succession) and at leastfour closed double gates. Skiersmust pass all the gates.
