Spring PARCC Testing

If you have a child in grades 3-5, please take a minute to view the schedule for the state mandatory Spring PARCC testing. Students who are absent during their class will still be required to complete the PARCC during makeup sessions. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Tinney at [email protected].

Due to the snow during our January fundraiser, Chipotle has graciously given us a do-over.

Please join us at Chipotle this Sunday, May 6th, from 5 - 9pm, and OES PTA will receive 50% of the proceeds. There are three ways to guarantee your purchase will count toward the fundraiser:

Show the cashier a digital flyer prior to paying

Show the cashier a paper flyer prior to paying

Flying flyer-free? Just mention the fundraiser to the cashier prior to paying

You can view or print the flyer here: https://olneyespta.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/chipotle_may62018.pdf

Olney Chess Club represents at the 2018 Maryland State Girls Tournament

Juliette Larsen (3rd Grade) successfully competed at the annual MD Girls Chess championship, a first for OES. With this tournament bid, OES joins Sherwood and Julia Brown Montessori as having sent someone to the state chess tournament.

After finishing the season here at the OES chess club as a "knight", Juliette proceeded to the K-5 state tournament held in Baltimore (St Mary's of the

Incarnation church school) in an open, friendly, nationally rated event for all elementary schools, whether public or private.

58 girls competed in the tournament hosted by the Maryland Chess Association, with the largest team coming from Chesapeake Beach (9) who won the teams division. After 5 games, Juliette earned 1.5 points with a win, draw and two losses, for a final place of 20th overall, and a provisional USCF rating of 107. Her section, K-5, is for unrated-to-500 rated chess players, and was the largest section by far.

The OES club team, run this year by Lynn Cotten, had 48 members, also a new high. OES chess team is one of the largest in the state and is run completely by volunteers. Juliette thanks the OES club, parents, and sponsorship, and looks forward to competing next year with more friends!

More info about the event can be found at the complete US Chess Federation tournament results site and the Maryland Girls 2018 complete

results page with teams and brackets.
