The community is invited to attend “Arrive Alive: A Safe Routes to School Forum,” hosted by the Montgomery County Council of Parent Teacher Associations (MCCPTA) and the Montgomery County Pedestrian, Bicycle, and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee (PBTSAC).
This free event will bring together stakeholders determined to ensure the walking and busing routes for students are safe. Sidewalks, cycling paths, bus stop locations, and parent drop-off loops are all important components of keeping kids safe as they walk and ride to school.

HAVE YOU HEARDABOUT The New
“Kinder Garden”?
Staff Wish WallMany of our dedicated staff spend money for
supplies out of their own pockets to enhance our children’s learning experience!
The Wish Wall helps alleviate some of those costs. Thanks to our wonderful OES community, a majority of our Wish Wall requests were taken home at Back to School Night to be fulfilled! We’d like to continue to fulfill as many requests as possible. Please take a moment to look through the lists (links at left) and see if you are able to fulfill a wish or two, not just for your child’s teacher, but also for our amazing support staff.
Once you have purchased the item, make sure to label it with the staff member’s name before sending it in to
school with your child or dropping it off at the office. If you have any questions about an item,
we recommend you contact the staff member who requested it.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our school year is off to a great start! Students have been very busy this month
learning routines, making goals, and staying engaged in learning. Although the
lunch and recess block is extended, both areas
(lunchroom and recess areas) are calm. Students seem to
be enjoying the extra space (inside and out) and the qui-
eter noise level! As shared in my email home to parents,
we will open the Café to all parents for lunch. Please fol-
low the instructions provided to you in that email.
Parent Conferences/Visitation
We value the home– school connection at Olney. If you have any questions re-
garding your child’s academic performance, please contact the teacher or staff
members via phone or email for an appointment. We respectfully ask that you do
not come to the building without a confirmed appointment. Our teachers partici-
pate in planning meetings and professional development opportunities before,
during, and after the school day. Confirmed appointments are important so that
teachers are prepared to give you the time and information that you need.
Teachers do not always check their email in the evening, so please give them un-
til the following afternoon to reply to you. Teachers will provide you with dates
and times for meetings and/or visits that support our academic agenda. In addi-
tion, a staff member may accompany you depending on the circumstances of
your visitation. Please remember to bring your state ID for any visit to our
building. We are required by MCPS to scan each visiting persons ID before they
can enter the building. This procedure will be done for every visit. Please be pre-
pared and accommodating. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.

ting forth our best effort we will strive to create an environment of mu-

A Message from Mrs. Glawe
Reminder:
The following changes in recording attendance in Montgomery County Public Schools are being implemented in
accordance with the Maryland Student Records System Manual revised effective July 1, 2007, by the Maryland
State Department of Education. Please read the bulleted items carefully.
Tardiness
If your child arrives to school after 9:00 a.m. he/she needs to stop in the office to receive a tardy slip. It is im-
portant for students to arrive on time each day.
Absences
Students will be recorded as a.m. absent, if they arrive at school more than two hours late.
Students will be recorded as p.m. absent, if they leave school more than two hours early.
Students will be recorded as either a.m. absent or p.m. absent, if they are absent from school for more than two
hours but less than four hours during the school day.
Students will be recorded as full-day absent, if they are present for less than two hours of the school day.
Students will be recorded as full-day present, if they are present for more than four hours of the school day.
The state of Maryland requires us to "code" absences for each student. Therefore, a written explanation of each ab-
sence is required from the parent/guardian within three days of the student’s return to school.
Please let the office know if your child(ren) has a health emergency; so that we can support you and your family.

Holiday Season

throughout the year our school is provided with opportunities to help families in
need. If your family is in need of food for the upcoming Thanksgiving or Winter
holidays, please contact me, Mrs. Glawe or Mrs. Roarty on or before October
11th to discuss your needs. We anticipate an opportunity in the coming weeks
but need you to let us know about your needs as soon as possible. We cannot
make any guarantees, but will do our best to CONFIDENTIALLY support you.
Extended Absences
Please inform your child’s teacher, Mrs. Nelson, and the administration if your child will be absent for travel.
Teachers are not responsible for providing instructional activities for students when they are traveling. If a stu-
dent is absent for more than 15 consecutive school days they will be withdrawn according to MCPS guidelines.
