When I get ready

to write this greeting, I sometimes

struggle to come up with an inspiration for a topic.  However, thanks to a good friend with whom we had dinner a few days ago, this process was painless.   He is a retired Air Force colonel who, after his retirement, spent 20 years as a vice president of Lockheed Martin, responsible for airplane sales in Europe.  He has spent time in places on earth I have never heard of and, as you can imagine, he has an abundance of interesting stories that he shares with me.   As we were sharing our experiences, he stopped at one point and told me he felt my life had been much more interesting than his. That got my attention. He said that he admired the way I gravitated to activities that provided a benefit to others.  He was especially interested in the history of our OLLI operation.  He wanted to know how we got started, what has happened along the way, and what will the future bring. For those of you who have not been with us since day one, I thought I would summarize how our program was born.  I hope you find it as interesting as my friend Don did.In late 1999, former KSU president Dr. Betty Siegel expressed her desire to start a program that would specifically serve seniors. As usual, she turned to someone she knew would and could make it happen. She asked Dean Barbara S. Calhoun if she would give birth to

a program for seniors that would be housed in what was then called the Department of Continuing Education (now the College of Continuing and Professional Education). Dr. Siegel wanted KSU to become the center for senior activity in the northwest quadrant of Georgia.  I should mention that she informed Dean Calhoun that there were no funds for this project. In spite of that, Dean Calhoun told Dr. Siegel that the idea was a great suggestion, and she accepted the challenge. Then the dean turned to me. I was retired and had not found anything I was really interested in doing other than volunteer work at a few charities and at our church. I quickly answered yes, having no idea of what we would do or how we could do it without any funding.  This was the birth of Senior University. We changed the name to Golden University as the public was confused with the name “Senior” thinking it was something affiliated with the academic side of KSU. Then we were fortunate enough to become affiliated with the Bernard Osher Foundation and we changed the name to The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The rest of the story is somewhat of a miraculous happening. We started with our first social in February of 2000 with about 30 people being present. The key thing that happened was when one of the attendees came up to me and thanked us for trying to get our program started. She stated this was the first time since her husband passed away

eight months ago that she had the desire to get dressed and get out of the house.  Dr. Siegel was standing there with me along with Dean Calhoun and my wife Patty.  I turned to Dr. Siegel and Dean Calhoun and promised them we would get the program going because it might make a difference in the lives of many people.  The rest is pleasant history. We have not always done everything right, but we try our best to make a difference in our member’s lives. Whether it is having them join the club room and socialize with new friends (my goal was to have at least 50 members; we now have a membership of 125) or taking classes to learn new skills or simply make their lives more interesting, we impact lives in a positive manner. We started with six classes in 2000 and we now offer over 50 classes per quarter. We started with 34 students in 2000, and we now serve approximately 3,000.  What a great privilege it has been to be a part of this.  I have met many wonderful and interesting people and the supporting staff at KSU has been marvelous. They give a great deal of their time, even beyond their normal work hours, because they truly are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our members. Dean Calhoun’s support and encouragement have been wonderful. We will continue our efforts to become the center of senior activity in the northwest quadrant and try to make a positive difference in the lives of our members  Hope to see you in class soon.

MICHELLE’S VIEW

When you think about

computers, it’s dif-ficult to comprehend how far we’ve come in such a short period of time. Innovators such as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have impacted our lives far beyond our wildest imagination. It was the late 1970s when I learned how to write programs on a computer; I re-membered the newness of it and how cool

it was. When I was in college, we actually had to physically go to the library to do re-search – using books! Now we can do this in a matter of seconds on our phones. In the early 1990s the concept of electron-ic mail seemed a bit far-fetched, but once I sent my first “email” there was no turning back! Back then I would always follow up with a call to make sure it worked. Nowadays, people’s favorite response to a question is “Google it!” This was first

evident to me when my daughter was in kindergarten and her younger brother asked her a question. She simply stated “Google it!” Indeed, a wow moment. There’s no doubt technology has improved our lives and changed the way we commu-nicate. That’s why we have instructors like Lynne Mock, who implemented the OLLI Scholar program, to help students become more confident and realize the potential they have with computers.

Your Fears Trailblazing Instructor Develops Successful Scholar Program

For many of us, fear of the unknown can be paralyzing. Longtime OLLI instructor Lynne Mock states that fear of technology and using new equipment is the preeminent challenge of her students aged 50 and older. Serving OLLI since 2000, Mock is dedicated to reassuring her pupils of everything they are capable of and helping them conquer their fears.

“I take what they already know and demonstrate to them that it’s [computers] not much different from the knowledge they already have,” Mock explained. “I show them it isn’t magic, bells and whistles, but just another step in their lives.”

Mock leads a wide variety of computer courses implementing the KISS (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) method. She says her goal is to present the curriculum in a basic simple format that makes learning fun and non-threatening. “I always tell my students, ‘I don’t know of a single car that cranked itself up and went out and caused a wreck.’ Knowing how to use the computer properly can make the difference in keeping you safe on the Internet and on the computer,” Mock said.

Recognizing her student’s lack of familiarity with computers and technology, Mock spearheaded the OLLI Scholar Certificate. She designed the program to

consist of five foundational courses with the goal of becoming more computer proficient. Students completing all five courses within one year are awarded a certificate and crowned an OLLI Scholar. To date, OLLI has seen more than 200 graduates of this program.

“She’s very patient with her students and has helped pave the way for many of them to re-enter the workforce,” said Michelle Girage, Assistant Dean. “Additionally, she has alleviated students’ apprehension of social media allowing them to become more connected with family and friends.” See page 11 for course information.

Bridge in the 21st Century - Part III, DefenseThe third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the American Contract Bridge League and KSU. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action. Women and MoneyThrough divorce, death of a spouse, or choice, more women are more likely to be living on their own. This means women are more likely to assume sole responsibility for making their own financial decisions than ever before. Women live an average of 4.9 years longer than men. This fact alone shows that women face several financial challenges including:

• A decrease in income due to the loss of a spouse.

• The need for women to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time.

• Increasing health-care costs related to chronic health conditions due to aging, including the increasing costs for medications taken over a longer period of time.

• The fact that women are likely to provide some long-term care for a spouse or loved one, yet women are more apt to face their own need for long-term care alone.

• The fact that women who outlive their spouses will probably bear the ultimate responsibility for the disposition of their marital estate.

Women today have never been in a better position to achieve financial security for themselves and their families. Yet seizing the opportunity for long-term financial success requires awareness of potential issues and careful planning.$49, 2.5 HoursT.
