South-East England is the location of a new town development that is currently in construction. Just 17 minutes from Central London, the site is bound by the retail temple of Bluewater to the west, Swanscombe town and the Thames to the north, Ebbsfleet international station to the east, and the productive fields of ‘the garden of England’ to the south. As a group of twenty students we have produced and alternative, custom build proposal that intends to better the volume built, developer provided homes currently being built.

Our starting point was to divide the ex-quarry into twenty equally sized areas with which we would each take responsibilty for creating a proposal for one. A central thoroughfare split the site in two and connected Bluewater with the international station. A lake runs along the southern edge of the quarry in the shadow of a chalk cliff.

My proposal provides residents with a lower density alternative to London. Development guidelines stipulate that each resident must build a home that adheres to a set of rules, and be built within a given structure that encourages resident completion. This concept challenges the homogeneous Barratt homes development currently in construction and ensures a more diverse settlement. A primary school on the site conforms to a similar set of rules to the residents houses.

Primary school A shared solar gain space between the houses is designed to accomodate two contrasting architectures

Page 6: Oliver Joyce CV

The shared space between the houses is detailed according to the local vernacular – the scheme is sensitive to the qualities of heritage and place and can accomodate a plurality of architectural tastes. The shared space can be used as little as a communal entrance hallway or as much as an extension to the houses.

was a group project given to us at the end of our second year. It was a competition based brief and the winning group would be chosen to have their proposal built at the end. The brief was to create a community vegetable garden on a gap site between two tenement blocks in the heart of Glasgow, with a small off grid building that could be used for community meetings, storage and admin. Our concept was based on using entirely recycled materials, including recycled scaffold boards to create the primary structure, and sheep wool for insulation. The building creates a boundary to the site as well as forming an entrance to the allotments. Our project was awarded second place.

For the project in second year we were given the freedom to create an activity center for our choice of sport - I chose BMXing. I carried out extensive research into the activity and the locale of the town to understand what kind of space would be suitable. I documented the space the riders utilized using long exposure photography and film, and then transferred this information into plan and section. As well as creating a space shaped specifically for BMXers I looked at making the activity into a street front spectacle for passers-by.
