Let us remember all the men and women who serve our nation in the armed forces. We remember all those who have died in war and all those who have been seriously wounded. As always we pray for all those who live in harm’s way every day. This week we remember to pray for all the retired priests, sisters and brothers who have served us in so many ways throughout their lives. Let us remember those who are unemployed and those who are among the working poor. We pray for those who are homeless and those who are hungry. We remember all those who are sick and those who are dying. We remember all those who have died, especially those who die alone, with no one to grieve their dying. Let us always remember those who are in prison and those who are condemned to death. In

our very addictive society we pray for all those who are caught up in addictive and compulsive behavior and all those who are in recovery programs and all those who yearn for recovery. As a new school year begins we pray for the students, teachers, administrators and school staffs. We pray that they will have a blest school year. We pray for all the catechetical programs that will be getting underway in the parishes in the coming weeks. Let us always pray for our parish and always for one another. Dear Friends,

Just about a week ago one of the periodicals that I receive arrived in the mail. It will be the last issue to be published. CHURCH magazine has been a great voice for pastoral ministry for many years. In its final issue there was an interesting and powerful article entitled: PASTORAL PLANNING AND THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN. It was written by David Couturier, OFM Cap, who is presently the Director of the Office of Pastoral Planning for the Archdiocese of Boston.

All of us know that we are in the midst of very difficult financial times. "The economic downturn reveals what most Americans already knew in their guts. The average American worker has been working longer and harder and for less money. Americans have far less time to spend with their families and even less time for volunteering in their church. The average worker now spends 200 more hours per year on the job than he or she did in the 1970's. The reason

Page 7: olf 7272 20080727083734 00001fatimafocus.org/focusarchive/bulletin_091309.pdfParish Staff Rev. Steven J. Peterson, Pastor Rev. Andrew P. Connolly, Retired, In Residence Rev. John Freund,

September 13, 2009 Page 5

Americans are working harder is not greed or misplaced family priorities. Driving this cycle of overwork is simply to maintain what families now have. The fact is that wages, adjusted for inflation, have remained distressingly stagnant for the past two decades, while the costs for food, housing, energy, college, day care, and health care have soared well beyond the rate of inflation." The economic crisis is hurting two groups immediately: young people and elderly. All this impacts the ability of the Church to plan for the future.

Fr. Couturier believes that there are two things that churches can do: first, get people together to work on their economic concerns and challenges, second, use our theological resources to develop secure economic relationships at all levels of church. He suggests four questions for reflection: What are the economic signs of the times that we see? How is the economic crisis touching you personally? How is it impacting your friends and those you talk to? How is the economic crisis touching our parish?

Presently the economic strategies emphasize privacy over common good, the material over the spirit and aggression over compassion. He states that what we need is a more relational kind of pastoral economics (fraternal economy) for the twenty-first century. It will be based on five principles: Transparency, Equity, Participation, Solidarity and Austerity.

The global economic meltdown provides us with the opportunity to lobby for a more relational and less aggressively private economy. Peace, Fr. Steve

FALL SCRIPTURE PROGRAM The Book of Psalms is a collection of 150 songs which express the basic longing of the human heart. Although written hundreds of years ago, these writings speak powerfully to our contemporary situation. This four-week program will look at the Psalms to see how the authors celebrated their gratitude to God for God’s goodness to them and how they struggled with problems of betrayal, hurt, fear, sorrow, confusion, and seeming loss of God’s presence. Who of us has not had similar thoughts and feelings? Together we will explore the ways psalmists dealt with the reality of their experiences and ultimately were able to re-assert their trust in God’s love. Perhaps we will be able to do the same. Presenter: Sr. Anne-Marie R. Kirmse, OP, PhD. (Theology Professor at Fordham University. She is an excellent teacher and loves doing scripture programs in parishes). Dates: October 6, 13, 20, 27 Time: 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM Place: The Martha & Mary Room

One Voice… By Andrew P. Connolly On December 3, 2006, I began a series of articles in Fatima Focus in a column I titled, "One Voice". Although a few other themes sneaked in from time to time, these articles were mainly devoted to an explanation of the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church. The last article was published in Fatima Focus on August 26, 2007. Shortly afterwards, I was appointed Temporary Administrator of the parish. That new mission radically changed my life and left little time to explore the social teaching with you. Instead, I wrote a weekly column whose title I stole from St. Paul, "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ". Somehow or another, we all managed to survive the ten months I served as administrator and I was hoping to go back to writing "One Voice". That has not been possible up to now, but I hope to be able to continue to write about the social teaching of the Church and about social issues in the light of that teaching. I welcome your comments, in writing or otherwise. This column will appear here regularly or irregularly, depending on circumstances. A push to continue this series came in the publication in July of a new encyclical by Pope Benedict XVI on social teaching, Caritas in Veritate, “Charity in Truth”. I begin by recalling the basic principles of Catholic Social Teaching, principles that flow from natural law and from our Catholic Christian faith and which ought to be used to judge concrete social conditions and the proposed solutions to social problems. These principles are usually given now in a list of seven or ten principles. The following list is my favorite way of understanding the principles: (1) Human dignity – All human beings possess a fundamental and equal dignity or value, being made in the image and likeness of God. (2) Common good & Community – Human beings achieve fulfillment in community; all must contribute to the good of the whole society, the common good. (3) Option for the Poor – “The poor have the most urgent moral claim on the conscience of the nation. We are called to look at public policy decisions in terms of how they affect the poor.” (4) Rights & Responsibilities – Each person is the subject of rights that protect and promote his/her dignity. Each person is also the subject of responsibilities that protect the rights of others and promote the common good.

Page 9: olf 7272 20080727083734 00001fatimafocus.org/focusarchive/bulletin_091309.pdfParish Staff Rev. Steven J. Peterson, Pastor Rev. Andrew P. Connolly, Retired, In Residence Rev. John Freund,

September 13, 2009 Page 7

(5) Government & the Principle of Subsidiarity – Government has a key role to play in protecting the dignity of all and promoting the common good. Necessary functions for the good of society should be done at the lowest level possible, but some conditions prevail that require the intervention of the highest levels of government. (6) Economic Justice – The economy is meant to serve people. Everyone has a right to a decent job, to a just salary, to decent working conditions. There is a limited right to economic initiative and private property. (7) Stewardship of God’s Creation - We are stewards of the gifts of God, which are intended to benefit everyone. All have a responsibility to care for the environment. (8) Promotion of Peace – Peace is essential for the full development of people, society and the environment. Pope John Paul II, "Peace is not just the absence of war. It involves mutual respect and confidence between peoples and nations. It involves collaboration and binding agreements.” (9) Participation – “All people have a right to participate in the economic, political, and cultural life of society.” No one should be excluded. (10) Global Solidarity & Development – We are one family of God. “Our responsibilities to each other cross national, racial, economic and ideological differences.” This clearly implies mutual “respect for the moral, cultural, and spiritual dimensions” of all persons. This principle encourages full human development that protects and promotes the rights of nations and peoples. In future articles I will try to explore the implications of these principles for our individual and social lives. UN MENSAJE DE NUESTRO

PARROCO

Paz, Padre Esteban

ASISTENCIA PARROQUIAL/ APOSTOLADO HISPANO
