We continue to pray for peace in the world, especially in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. We pray for all those who have died in this war and for all those who have been so seriously wounded. We pray for all those who are in harm’s way. We remember during this Advent season all those who are so far away from their homes and their families. We remember those who are homeless, hungry and poor. We remember those who find this season so very difficult. We pray for families who are in the midst of crisis. We remember those who are in hospice and all those who care for them. We remember all those who have asked us to pray for them. Let us keep in prayer those who are struggling with any sort of addiction and for all those who are in recovery. Let us remember those who are preparing to celebrate the baptism of their child and those who are preparing to celebrate the sacrament of marriage. Let us pray that the Advent gifts of joy, peace, hope and love will fill our hearts and homes throughout these Advent days.

• From the Advent SOURCEBOOK: “The day after Thanksgiving the NEW YORK TIMES told of a 33 year old local cab driver whose shoulder length hair was tied in a ponytail. (Don’t get distracted by the ponytail!) About five years ago, this cabby “prayed to God for guidance on how to help the forgotten people of the streets who exist in life’s shadows.” As he recalls it, God replied: “Make eight pounds of spaghetti, throw it in a pot, give it out on 103rd Street and Broadway with no conditions, and people will come.” He did, they came, and now he goes from door to door giving

people food to eat. I am not asking you to stuff the Big Apple with spaghetti. But a New York cabby can bring light into your Advent night. He prayed to a God who was there; he listened: he gave the simple gift that God asked of him; he gave with no conditions; and people responded. Here is your Advent: Make the Christ who has come a reality; a living light, in your life and in some other life. Give of yourself…to one dark soul….with no conditions.” (Walter Burghardt) Dear friends, This Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. It is a time of great and joyful expectation for God’s holy people of every age. It is a time for us to prepare our hearts and our lives to receive the King of Glory. Where do we find the King of Glory? That might be the core question for these days. These days are meant to help us find the time and space to discover the presence of the King of Glory in our midst. Last week I was reading a book of short reflections on the season of Advent and the book told some short stories about some of the very outstanding people of our faith tradition. What joined each of these folks together was their tremendous commitment to serve the poor in their midst. They were stories of Mother Theresa of Calcutta. Dorothy Day, Archbishop Oscar Romero. This week on December 2nd we remember the anniversary of the deaths of Maura Clarke, Ita Ford, Jean Donovan and Dorothy Kazel who were brutally murdered on December 2nd, 1980 in El Salvador. It was in the poor and forsaken that all these people found the King of Glory. Each of these faith filled people came to experience the presence of God in those who are in great need. Each of them felt called by

God to journey with the poor and the marginalized. Throughout these weeks we are asked again and again: Where is it that you find the King of Glory? The days of Advent call on us to go much deeper into the mystery of our faith and see how that mystery of faith calls us to see our interconnectedness with those who are in most need. The beautiful words of the Advent hymn, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, ring within our hearts throughout these weeks. We cry out for God to be with us and accompany us on this journey of life. May our God bless these Advent days for all of us! May we come to see more clearly where the King of Glory truly is and may we always serve the most vulnerable in our midst. Peace, Ft. Steve

BIBLE STUDY

After a long lapse we will resume our study of the Bible. Some months ago we brought our study of the Book of Exodus to an end. I wish to continue with a fairly rapid study of the history of Israel, giving a rather broad overview and highlighting only a few major events. This will lead us eventually into the New Testament and a study of the Acts of the Apostles.  Classes will be held every other Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM in the sacristy.  (Alternate Wednesdays will be devoted to Bible Study in Spanish.) In the near future we will be meeting on Dec. 2 and 16. In January, we will meet on Jan. 6 and 20. Initially, after an overview, we will be covering history covered in the books of Joshua, Judges and Ruth.

Paz, Padre Esteban
