Big Brothers Big Sisters is a registered charity that provides volunteer child mentoring services to children in need between the ages of 5 and 18. Our Site-based Program offers both individual and group support in community schools throughout the local region; included in some schools is our Teen Mentoring program that places qualified teenagers with younger students. The Community-based Program reflects more traditionally recognized mentoring that matches adults from across the age spectrum with children and, by extension, their families. Big Brothers Big Sisters, now in its 102nd year nationally and 29th year locally, has a solid reputation for providing positive role models for children, encouraging them to pursue their education, avoid choices that will put them at risk, remain healthy and active, and become responsible citizens that give back to their community. Starting in September of this year, BBBS begins providing services in the Olds and Sundre communities. We will be starting in the schools and then adding our Community program as capacity increases. We need volunteers as both mentors and committee members. If you have some time and are interested in supporting or finding out more about a great organization that delivers much-needed services to our community’s children and youth, call (403) 227-6766 or contact Sharron Matthewman, our Olds Mentoring Coordinator, direct at [email protected] or (403) 478-0039. As Sharron point out: “Anyone can be a Mentor; we all have the credentials. Individuals and businesses alike are welcome. There is training offered and processes to go through, but the power of one hour can make a huge difference to that child’s life. Pay it forward and together we can make a difference.”

About us:
Mission Statement The Olds Gymnastic Club strives to improve the health, strength, assurance and self-esteem of children through a quality program of gymnastics, while teaching in a safe, fun, andprofessional environment. Our coaches are here to help each athlete achieve their personal goals and develop quality characteristics as a gymnast.
Program Philosophy Our Guiding Principles:
To instill a lifelong love for the sport of gymnastics To help make everyone as good as they can and want to be To enhance the emotional, social, and physical growth of all participants To offer safe, constructive, and rewarding experiences To treat all our participants fairly and equally
We Value:
Parent involvement and support Open lines of communication between all members Honesty, integrity, and respect Commitment to the pursuit of excellence Dedication, discipline, and hard work Sportsmanship and team spirit Physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle Responsible behavior, independence, and adaptability
Gymnastics Season Our gym programs generally run from Sept. to the middle of April. Our program runs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays throughout the season. Classes generally begin inSeptember and run through to December when we break for Christmas. We start again when school is back in session in January. Our season is generally completed during the middle of April. We aim for a total of about 24 weeks of gym classes. We are limited in the number of days/week that we operate since we use gym space in a public school and need to schedule our time with other groups using the same space. There are usually some extra training days planned for the gymnasts in the competitive and pre-competitive programs. This is needed as some of the gym meets fall after ourregular season is over. As well, the extra time is often needed for the gymnasts to master the various skills and routines they are working on.

Pool Program Descriptions Aquafit: All our classes are drop in, there is no registration necessary. Shallow Aquafit: In waist to chest deep water you will be lead through a variety of exercises that will work on your cardiovascular fitness as well as muscular strength and endurance for 45 minutes. Deep Water Aquafit: Participants must be comfortable in deep water to participate. With the use of an aquatic belt our instructors will lead you through a great 45 minute workout.
Lane Swim: Our 5 lanes are designated as follows: two lanes for faster swimmers, 2 lanes for medium swimmers and 1 lane set up as a leisure lane for those patrons wanting to use the Aqua belts and do water walking and other types of aquatic exercises. The leisure lane is also a good spot for those who are just learning how to swim, and need to practice. Equipment that is available for lane swim includes: flutter boards, flippers/fins, aqua belts, and pull buoys. Lane & Tot Swim: During this time we have the 5 lanes set up for lane swimmers while the tot pool, hot tub and water slide are open for families to come swim with their toddlers and babies. Public Swim: The main pool, tot pool, hot tub, and water slide are open to the general public. Kids under the age of nine must be accompanied by a responsible adult in the water with them. The ratio of adults to children under 9 is 1:3. Family Swim: All children must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18. Lessons: The Olds Aquatic Centre runs Red Cross Pre-School and Red Cross Swim Kids swimming lessons. If your child has never been in swim lessons before or took a different program we can screen your child during a public swim to see what level would be best for them in which to register. Swim Fit: Drop- in rates apply to this program. A Workout will be posted on a board. An Instructor will be available to explain the workout to you. This program is not designed for beginner swimmers. Some of the swimmers that this program would benefit are those training for a triathlon, and those that have competitively swam in the past/present. Supervised Play: Want to take part in Swim Fit and need something for your younger children to do? Any child that is toilet trained can attend this program. One of our certified lifeguards gets in the water to play with children in the tot pool, hot tub and water slide during the Swim Fit time.

Music builds community by enhancing listening skills, appreciation for others and celebration of differences. Music making requires creative problem solving and team work.
Foundation: Carl Orff, German composer, 1895 – 1982. His approach to teaching music is holistic, involving speaking, singing, movement, body percussion and instruments. The Orff approach emphasizes sound before symbol, developing musical literacy as a natural progression using music experienced through singing, the rhythm of speech, whole body movement, and instruments.
