  • There once was a time when families spent the evening gathered happily around a warm flame, not a television. The Windsor Arch evokes this era, providing timeless beauty and bold craftsmanship.

As Victorian castings accompany polished chrome highlights, flames within radiate steady, evenheat for many years to come. Unique in design and function, the Windsor Arch combines modern technology with a subtle hint of distinction and elegance from a time once forgotten.

  • FOREWORDperiod-inspired doesnt mean frozen in time. It isnt even necessarily tra-

ditional. Rather, in looking to the best of 300 years of the decorative arts, the

companies listed in this book offer wild, imaginative, extraordinary possibili-

ties from way beyond todays designer showrooms. Whether your house is an

antique, vintage, or new, youll find ideas here.

This book presents hundreds of companies who, in the opinion of the

editors of Old-House Interiors magazine, offer excellent products and good

value. We herald the small company selling high-quality wares direct to the

customer, whether through distributors or over the Internet. We also point to

the appropriate specialty lines of major manufacturers. In deciding what to

include, we tend to favor companies of high reputation, products with true

authenticity, beautiful and timeless materials, and groundbreaking design-

ers who are using a period-inspired vocabulary. (Generally available materi-

als, like those easily found at lumber stores and big-box home-improvement

    stores, are not listed.)

More comprehensive (though still full of specialty suppliers) is the

longer list of companies and products you can search through our website,

oldhouseonline.com. Listings here come from the combined resources of

Old-House Journal and Old-House Interiors magazines. Use this book to be-

come familiar with whats out there (and to mark pages, share ideas, find

contact information). Go to the website when your search gets more specific,

and also to link to companies websites.

  • if yours is an old house, or one modeled

    on American style traditions, congratu-

lations! You (and your designer) already

have all sorts of cues and clues for its

    decoration and furnishing, courtesy of

the period and style of the house. Thats

not to say that your choices are limited

actually, the opposite is true. A vintage

house suggests styles and treatments more

creative, and far less trendy, than those

    found in a contemporary showroom.

    Period-inspired rooms can be innovative,

interpretive, and personal. They need not

    be slavish reproductions.

In the midst of a booming revival of

    traditional design, the history-inspired

market has become the quality market.

Its where youll find products and fur-

    nishings of exceptional integrity, beauty,

and uniqueness. So much is available:

    reproduction carpets and rugs, furni-

ture, fabrics and wallpapers, and light-

ing specific to any era. Paint colors are

    grouped into well-researched period pal-

ettes; hardware is authentic in style and

finish. Some of these reproductions are

documentthat is, a replication of the

original, including its scale and colorway.

  • Others are adapted for modern taste or use. Still others are the result

of creative adaptation, and these often surpass the originals in every

way. Add the traditional decorating market to historical reproduc-

tions, and its quite a feast.

Period styles are fantastically diverse. The novice hears Victo-

rian and imagines florid carpets and carved rosewoodbut hasnt

yet considered the delicate, almost oriental interiors of the Aesthetic

movement, or the immensely pleasing designs of William Morris

(whose fabric and wallpaper patterns have been in production, unin-

terrupted, for nearly 150 years). Arts & Crafts is not limited to Stick-

leys rectilinear oak furniture and pinecone-embroidered muslin. It

extends to the abstracted glass designs of the Prairie School, the wood

  • joinery of Greene & Greene, even the presciently modern furniture

and textiles of the eras English and Scottish designers.

Do you lean more toward personal vision and an eclectic mix?

No problem; decorating is not permanent. Once you know some-

thing about the styles that do complement your Queen Anne or

Craftsman, youll be armed to mix and match, and otherwise break

the rules. A forward-looking frieze from the Victorian era may be

the artful punctuation in a modern room; a growing collection of

Arts & Crafts lighting and pottery can be as effective against gallery-

white walls as in a period bungalow. If your old house is of indeter-

minate pedigreeor if its had its pedigree remodeled right out of

ityou can use period design to enhance what it does have to offer.

You can create a cohesive interior where once blandness or confusion

    reigned. Patricia Poore

    Understanding the archi-

    tecture is the first step

    to bringing out its best

    qualities. Case in point:

    using mid- and jewel-tone

    papers and paint with

    mellow Arts & Crafts

    woodwork. In an effort to

    lighten up such rooms,

    some owners resort to

    white-painted walls and

    high-wattage lighting. The

    result: a black-and-white

    room with dark, receding

    woodwork.

    Much better to em-

    brace the cozy mood of

    such rooms. Bring out

    the warm highlights of

    the wood with analogous

    colors of terracotta and

    deep gold, or contrasting

    colors of olive and smoky

    blue. Use low-wattage or

    carbon-filament Edison

    lightbulbs in sconces and

    table lamps.

a period-inspired kitchen is a good choice in an old

house because it avoids the time warp sensation of

walking from a restored parlor into a room gleaming

with stainless steel. A frankly contemporary kitchen

works if, say, it is placed in an addition. And you can

simply add appropriate moldings and other details to a

    functionally modern kitchen.

How do you design a kitchen that will still look

good in 20 years? Rely on timeless materials such as

wood and stone. Downplay contemporary materials by

keeping design simple or by incorporating period con-

ventionstrimming out laminate counters in wood, for

example, or using honed rather than polished granite.

For cabinets and millwork, take design cues from your

dining room, or from an old pantry in the house or the

neighborhood. Also, try to use only details and materials

that are related to the date and style of the house.

    30 vanities & cabinets

    31 fixtures, faucets, accessories

    32 all listings

the most successful period-inspired baths are not slav-

ish reproductions. Start with the basics: three plumbed,

ceramic fixtures; a tile or linoleum floor; a medicine cabi-

net; a washable wainscot of varnished wood or tile. By

all means, interpret and update to create a room both

functional and beautiful. Rooms that have a personal vi-

sionand of course good craftsmanship and materials

are the rooms that will age gracefully.

White fixtures have always been most common (and

least expensive). Bathrooms inspired by those of the early

20th century are a good choice for most old houses, lend-

ing an indeterminate timelessness. These common bath-

rooms are of course perfectly appropriate for bungalows,

Arts & Crafts houses, and Tudor, Colonial, or Romantic

Revivals. Owners of 19th-century houses will find it easy

to incorporate Victorian-period details: wainscot or tile,

electrified gaslight-era fixtures, and freestanding or an-

    tique furniture.

    opposite: Hutker Architects created this

master bath for a Shingle Style house in

    New England. above: Spoke-handled faucets

with a nickel finish are by Harrington Brass.

right: Built-ins lend a furnished look (and

when it comes to handmade tiles, were approaching a

true art form. Perhaps thats why tiles old and new have

become collectibles. These works of art and craftsman-

ship can enhance everyday places like the kitchen backs-

plash, shower walls, and fireplace surround.

Choices include glossy tiles in every color pal-

ette (with or without special effects like crackle glazes

or aged patinas); matte, slip-glazed tiles in diverse and

earthy field colors; and decorative (or deco) relief tiles

that depict a motif. Revival tiles include De Morgan and

Low style Victorian tiles, accurate reproductions of Arts

& Crafts-era Batchelder tiles, boldly colored Moorish

Revival deco tiles, and cuerda seca and tube-lined tiles.

Even matte-finish encaustics are back. Metal tiles make

    another option.

Even manufactured ceramic tile has gone far beyond

the 4x4 square. Choose from hexes, octagons, oblongs,

diamonds, and rhomboids in all sizes.

opposite: : Matte-finish geometric tiles with

encaustic decos are impervious in a sunroom.

above: Decorative relief tiles from Lewellen

    include Oak, Chickadees, and Poppy.

    right: Hand-glazed Cosmopolitan subway-

style tiles in Truffle and Blackberry (among

25 colors) are from Tile Source.
