Old Second Line Road Proposed Multi-use
Pathway Project (East side from Terry Fox Drive
Northerly 110 m)
Transportation Services Department
Background • A gap exists in the active transportation network as an existing multi-use pathway (MUP) on the
east side of Old Second Line Road does not connect to Terry Fox Drive. The existing MUP transitions from an off-road facility to the roadside shoulder north of Terry Fox Drive.
• The east side shoulder is not a comfortable facility for all pedestrians, in particular school children.
- Flex posts are installed along the northbound lane edge from spring through fall, and pedestrians and cyclists use the shoulder of the road
- During the winter, the flex posts are removed and snow accumulates, reducing the width of the shoulder
• The proposed MUP on the east side of Old Second Line Road would: - address the gap in the active transportation network and connect to the existing MUP north of
Terry Fox Drive- support access to Kanata Highlands Public School and St. Isabel School, located to the south and
west- connect to the existing sidewalk on the north side of Terry Fox Drive, east of Old Second Line
Road- connect to the existing multi-use pathway on the south side of Terry Fox Drive
Old Second Line Road Proposed MUP
Construction Details • New MUP will be 3.0m in width and 110m in length:
– Minimum 0.5m buffer will be provided between the rock face and new MUP
– New MUP will be built on top of the filled-in ditch
– New 2.0m drainage ditch will be provided on the west side of the new MUP
– New steel beam guiderail (SBGR) will be installed to the west of the new ditch on the edge of paved shoulder
– Paved shoulder width will be reduced to 1.5m on the east side of Old Second Line Road
• Improved crossings at the intersection of Terry Fox Drive and Old Second Line Road will include:
– New P-Gate installed at the south end of the new MUP
– New cross-rides for cyclists installed with uni-directional crossings on the north, east and west sides of the intersection
– New bike signals
• Tactile walking surface indicators (TWSI) will be maintained at pedestrian crossings
• City’s estimated timeline for this proposed project:
– 2021 Finalize Approvals and Detailed Design – 2021 Construction

Cross-rides at Old Second Line Road and Terry Fox Drive
Old Second Line Road Proposed MUP
Cross-rides are essentially crosswalks for bikes. They allow cyclists to remain on their bikes while crossing through an intersection. They are generally connected to other cycling infrastructure, and in most cases, cyclists cross on a cross-ride in the same direction as traffic flow.
New one-way / uni-directional cross-rides are proposed at the Old Second Line / Terry Fox intersection.
A uni-directional design has been selected to: i) Minimize conflicts with turning traffic
along Old Second Line and Terry Fox; and
ii) fit within the physical design of the existing intersection.
Adjacent Crosswalk and Cross-ride
How will the new cross-rides work?
Old Second Line Road Proposed MUP
The proposed new cross-rides will allow cyclists to ride their bike: • northbound on the east-side cross-ride • westbound on the north-side cross-ride • southbound on the west-side cross-ride
Cyclists will be able to continue to ride their bike east or west along the south-side cross-ride.
Cyclists who travel south on the new MUP and wish to travel south across the intersection, will need to either: i) use the new westbound and southbound cross-rides,
OR ii) dismount and walk across the east-side crosswalk

Other Design Features Old Second Line Road Proposed MUP
Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSI) are plates installed level with the concrete and are meant to be detectable underfoot or with a cane. They are used to warn people of a potential hazard such as a roadway.
P-Gates are a type of gate installed to ensure: • cyclists slow down before moving through
the gate; • prevent motor vehicles from accessing a
multi-use pathway.
Possible Future Facility: Goulbourn Forced Road MUP & Pedestrian Crossover
Old Second Line Road Proposed MUP
• City is currently examining the possibility of a new 3.0m MUP on the east side of Goulbourn Forced Road and an at-grade pedestrian crossover (PXO) in the vicinity of St. Isabel School.
• Potential facility is in response to a safety issue identified with students crossing Terry Fox Drive at Goulbourn Forced Road. This is currently an unsignalized intersection.
• Project construction timing: To be determined.
At-grade Pedestrian Crossover (PXO)
Old Second Line Road Proposed MUP
Pedestrian Crossovers are designated areas that allow pedestrians to safely cross a road where vehicles must yield to pedestrians when crossing.
PROS • Improves safety of pedestrians crossing
streets • Increases driver awareness of pedestrians • Allows pedestrians (and cyclists once
dismounted) to have priority and cross the street without delay
CONS • Cyclists must dismount and walk.
