Dear Neighbors,

There is a nip in the air as I write this letter signaling that Fall is FINALLY here. It is November and Thanksgiving isright around the corner, my favorite time of the year. This year I feel extremely blessed with two new grand-babies on the way and a wedding soon to celebrate. But as I write this note to you, I realize that I am also verythankful for some very good friends (and neighbors) that comprise the Board of HPPI.

Elizabeth Christenberry has been working on the Swann Pond project for the past two years. We are very closeto seeing this area transformed from an eyesore to a beautiful place to walk and relax. The Community Fundsponsors a Patrons Party, co-chaired by Pat Ashby from HPPI, which has raised money to go towards this project.

At a neighborhood meeting on October 22nd, Harold Walker and Missy Schukraft unveiled their hard work on the Street Tree ReplacementProject. This is a cooperative effort between HPPI and the City of Tampa to plant 100 trees in the neighborhood, replacing many of those welost this past year. HPPI is contributing $150/tree or $15,000 towards upgrading the live oaks that will be planted in our neighborhood. Missywas also instrumental in the recent planting of the bulb out planters on Morrison and Rome Ave. HPPI donated $600 towards this collabora-tive effort with our neighboring association, HHPNA.

Harvey Petty has been working on getting our historic street signs back into shape. Several signs have been damaged due to accidentsand the city recently added new signs with the Bayshore renovation. HPPI approved $4600 towards updating these signs. If you witness anaccident involving one of our street signs, please inform Harvey immediately. Harvey is also our Gasparilla representative for Hyde Park. Youwill hear more about this after the first of the year.

Funds for our projects are derived from our Membership dues and the Home Tour. We have had a very successful membership drive thisyear, headed by Missy Schukraft. This is your last opportunity to pay your membership dues and still be printed in the directory. The HomeTour, headed by Chandra Henthorne, will take place on December 8th from 1-4PM and will showcase 5 beautiful homes on Dakota Ave.Buy your tickets and plan on attending. Soon our neighborhood will be fragrant with fresh Wreaths and Garlands, another fundraiser for HPPI.Meg Fernandez has been taking orders and these will arrive the first weekend in December.

Rudy Fernandez is our invaluable resource with the City of Tampa. From zoning issues to navigating this new territory of collaborative projectswith the city, Rudy has been able to put us with the right contact to get the job done.

Pat Cimino is wrapping up the membership drive for HELP (Hyde Park Evening Local Patrol). A few more donations will allow us to extend ourevening hours. If you have not contributed, please consider doing so. The statistics show that this program is effective in keeping our crimerate low in the neighborhood. Terry Knight is busy planning a wonderful holiday party to be held December 7th, from 7-10 at our home onSouth Orleans . What a better way to start the holiday season than celebrating with your neighbors. This event is free to all HPPImembers and $25 for all non-members.

Mary Esther Parker, our historian, is planning a Centennial Celebration to be held April 4-6, 2014. Many of our homes will be turning100...time to celebrate!

Tish Thornberry has the daunting task of keeping you informed by producing this Gazette and the fliers that go out about events. She coordi-nates the distribution of these materials through the street captains, chaired by June Albert. Tish will also be coordinating the hanging of ourneighborhood holiday decorations on the street lamps.Carren Rieger Friess, as President-Elect, is working with the Village in an effort to monitor the noise levels this New Year's Eve. Kippy Nelsonwelcomes new neighbors to Hyde Park while Michelle Wolfe highlights those hard working gardeners with the Yard of the Month. ClaraGough, as Secretary, keeps track of all that HPPI is doing...lately not an easy task. Dada Glaser, as Treasurer, keeps a close and very accurateeye on all of our funds. Jim Warner, as our legal advisor, keeps us all honest!

Last but definitely not least, is William LaMartin. William is the core that holds us all together. He along with Mary Esther, bring history toour organization reminding us often about the roots of our neighborhood and the changes that have occurred over the years. William is alsoour future, informing us about what is going on in the neighborhood. Yes, he is the one sending our e-mail blasts and managing the web-site.He also produces our neighborhood directory. He is invaluable.

To all of these people that work so hard to make Hyde Park such a wonderful place to live...thank you.

May you have a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving.

Sincerely, Cindy Ramm, HPPI President

P a g e 3Hyde Park Patrons’ Party 2014

Calling all party goers and those who support neighborhood beautification! Mark your calendar for February 15, 2014 for HydePark’s Patrons’ Party. Historic Hyde Park Neighborhood Association (our neighboring Hyde Park neighborhood association) iscollaborating with Hyde Park Preservation inc/Old Hyde Park to present this gala and fundraising event. *The two Hyde Parkneighborhoods formed Hyde Park Community Fund to be a financial vehicle that allows for combined fundraising and to providetax benefits for donors.

We have a fabulous host house: the “Leiman House”, also know as the “Frank Lloyd Wright House”, on Newport Avenue. Listedon the National Register of Historic Places, the home will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2014. Our theme will beTampa, Turn of the Century. Think about the founding of Hyde Park, socialites traveling to the Tampa Bay Hotel and playing atBallast Point Casino, Ybor City booming, the Latin infusion of tastes and culture… all of the wonderful things in the early days ofthis wonderful paradise! With our Party being February 15, plan this as your Cupid’s night rather than deal with the crowds onthe 14th.

In the tradition of past Patrons’ Parties, this will be a “dress-up” event. Think of colorful Ybor evening dances at the turn of thecentury. We will have lavish food and beverages, a silent auction, dancing and other revelry. While we have lots of HPPI eventsat no cost, including the porch parties and the annual holiday party, this event is focused on raising funds to fuel capital im-provements in the neighborhood.

The funds raised from last year’s Party will improve “Swann Pond”. The retention pond on Swann Avenue between the Cross-town and the Village is an eyesore. Soon, our funds will be pooled with the City’s and a couple of local families to transformthis. The pond will be cleaned up, aerated with fountains, re-landscaped, surrounded by anattractive fence and a wider sidewalk to promote pedestrian safety. Look for ground-breaking soon. The funds raised from the upcoming 2014 party will build on this and extendthe improvement of Swann Avenue Gateway between the Crosstown and Bayshore Boule-vard.

Have questions or to get involved in the planning? Email [email protected] [email protected].

Our history in records

For over four years, our webmaster, William LaMartin, has been studying the history of Old Hyde Parkand its development in preparation for the neighborhood’s Centennial Celebration. Toward this effort, he hascross referenced a number of documents and old newspapers to offer the current homeowners ample informa-tion to determine when their home was built. In some situations, homeowners have gathered their own docu-mentation to show the year their home was built.

William tells us, each home in our neighborhood was catalogued using: 1910 City Directory, 1912 CityDirectory, 1913 City Directory, 1913 Tax Roll, 1914 City Directory, 1915 City Directory, 1915 Sanborn Fire Insur-ance Map, 1920 US Census, 1930 US Census, Tampa Tribune articles, Burgert Brothers Photos, and concrete pave-ment stamps. From that data and estimated build date was derived, and this information was sent via email toeach address for which we have an email in the neighborhood. The information may be viewed at our websiteat http://www.oldhydeparkfl.org/HouseDates.aspx. If you have additional information that would contribute toa build date, or to clear up discrepancies, please send it to [email protected].

Once a build date or year is agreed upon, William will give the Centennial committee and HPPI histo-rian the finalized listing so the homes can be recognized at the Centennial with “built circa” banners to creditthe age of the homes.

Please note, particularly new neighbors, if you haven’t been getting notices andbulletins about events in the neighborhood from the webmaster, please let him know soyour email address can be added to the database. You will also be well served to go to ourwebsite often to see the extensive information and photos William has made available andadds to regularly. From history of our fine neighborhood to individual homeowners, theneighborhood organizations, past Gazettes, property appraiser’s database, and photos ofover 400 homes in the neighborhood, events that impact our area like storms and Gaspa-rilla. It’s all in there! And it does add serious value to Old Hyde Park homes.

So, if you see William strolling the streets of the ‘hood, thank him for the hoursand years he has given to add value our homes and lives everyday. He’s certainly worth it.

L-R: Missy Schukraft, Cindy Ramm, Harold Walker, RobIrving, Debra Giep, Treemendous Tampa program

Missy Schukraft and Harold Walker have been working with the city’s natural re-sources department since April to coordinate the replacement of trees nearing theend of their life in the neighborhood. Over 30 diseased trees have already beenremoved from the right of way and more are on the list to go, up to 100 trees inall. HPPI asked Rob Irving, City arborist, to be our guest for a community discus-sion about plans for the future and replacement options. HPPI has allocated$15,000 to be matched by the City to afford some larger trees than would other-wise be planted in this public/private partnership renewal project. We learnedthat well established trees such as ours can add up to $8,000 to the value of thehome where they stand. Southern live oaks were chosen because they compart-mentalize decay well, live longer and fit well into the canopy already established. And where there is insufficient room for the oaks, crape myrtle will be planted.

During the past weeks, the City has been evaluating where thenew trees can be planted, where the City utilities are under-ground, and where roots remain from previous trees, to deter-mine locations for the new trees to be installed. The good newsis that our trees have been ordered, coming from Miami, and willtemporarily be hosted in the Lowry Park area until time to installthem. Our hope is to have them in ground by year end, or at thelatest in early spring, 2014, to allow them time to “settle in” beforethe summer rains. In the meantime, Missy and Harold continueto shepherd this project and have identified 100 potential sitesthroughout the neighborhood that would do well to have a lovelynew oak to continue our tree canopy.

The Bulb Out Project - from barren to beautifulOn an early Saturday morning, October 26, neighbors from Historic Hyde Park and Hyde Park Preservation dug inthe dirt to plant dwarf bougainvillea, iris, viburnum, golden dewdrop, and other colorful plants to dress up the cornersof Morrison and Rome. Bulb outs are what we call areas in the right of way bisected by the sidewalk. Plannedthrough the efforts the Hyde Park Garden Circle, supplemented by supplies from Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, andfunded by HPPI and HHPNA, these bulb outs on the right of way will be adopted by the Garden Circle for regularmaintenance. Each corner does have sprinkler connection.

While we may not see the “Yard of the Month”sign by the two urns at the entry gate of KateJackson Center, they certainly deserve specialrecognition. Continuously planted and main-tained by Missy Schukraft, funded by HPPI,these urns dress up the park and are oftenused as background for photographs. KateJackson has arranged drip systems for theplanters. Thank you, Missy, for your gift to theneighborhood.

HELP needs your help to keep your neighborhood safe

HELP is a stand alone program under HPPI service. Contributions from neighbors fund four hours ofnighttime patrol of all neighborhood streets and alleyways and is also available for spot construction andvacation checks, Gasparilla, Halloween and the Home Tour. Consider your contributions to HELP as areplacement for gated community security fees and voluntary contribution is a bargain for the service.$330 is the regular membership. Gold membership is $500 and is separately recognized in the directory. But any contribution is good for the cause! Because of reduced membership, nightly hours of service havebeen reduced from five to four. A few more donations would make the difference here.

Please send checks c/o Pat Cimino, 709 S. Delaware Avenue or use the internet PayPal option athttp://www.oldhydeparkfl.org/CreditPayment.htm. But neighbors need to help themselves by locking theircars every time they are parked, locking doors to their homes and garages, and securing their belongings. Many of the offenses that occur in our neighborhood are crimes of opportunity, quickly accomplished, ofvaluables left in open view in unlocked vehicles.
