Poisoning can result from continued use of relatively small amounts of cop- per sulfate in drinking water for cattle, the Journal cautioned. Thousands of farmers, home- makers, and rural youth are crowding the Cornell University campus this week to take part in activities of the 41st Farm and Home Week. Abstracts froma few of the talks follow. Prof. C. E. Ostrander of, the poultry department reported that "hormonized" or capetted poultry has become very popular and is bringing premium prices on most markets. He emphasized the im- portance of doing the job correct- ly, and referred to cases where the government has seised birds because the pellets were placed improperly. The pallet must be in- jected in the neck st the base of the skull, and the process results in a tender, juice meat. Prof. Fred E. Winch, Jr., for- ester, said that if farm net in- come drops, farmers may need to cut cash expenses by using home grown fuel. New, improved wood burning furnaces are both effic- ient and economical, he reported. Sawdust burners have also been developed on the west coast and in New England. The "lamprey-eel," an enemy of lake trout, is found only in .the larger lakes, Seneca, Cayuga, Canandaigua, Oneida, Ontario and Erie, according to R. L. Wigley of the conservation department. In the spring, mature lampreys ascend the tributary streams to spawn, and it is believed that a low barrier dam across such streams would substantially re- duce their number, said Wigley. There is no advantage from continued feeding of aureofac or administering aureomycin to beef calves over 2 to I months of age, said J. B. Ferguson of the ani- mal husbandry department. He reported on' experiments with calves in the Cornell beef herd. Daily administration of aureomy- cin to calves born in the spring of 1951 did reduce the incidence PLUMBINC HEATING CALL Ralph R. The new addition is vesicular stomatitis, a virus infection that causes fever and painful blister-like lesions in the mouth of cattle and horses. It closely resembles the dreaded foot-and-mouth disease but is not as serious from an economic standpoint. Headache, muscular pain, chills and fever are the principal symptoms in human be- ings. Direct contact with infected animals is believed to have caused the human cases thus far observ- ed, although veterinarians think that mosquitoes also may have something to do with spreading Subtle Little Elsie: "Mummy, what becomes of an automobile when it gets too old to run any more?" The report added that many sheep have been poisoned where "well meaning individuals have placed copper sulfate in mineral mixtures to prevent worms."

Thousands of farmers, home-makers, and rural youth are crowding the Cornell University campus this week to take part in activities of the 41st Farm and Home Week. Abstracts froma few of the talks follow.

Prof. C. E. Ostrander of, the poultry department reported that "hormonized" or capetted poultry has become very popular and is bringing premium prices on most markets. He emphasized the importance of doing the job correctly, and referred to cases where the government has seised birds because the pellets were placed improperly. The pallet must be injected in the neck st the base of the skull, and the process results in a tender, juice meat.

Prof. Fred E. Winch, Jr., forester, said that if farm net income drops, farmers may need to cut cash expenses by using home grown fuel. New, improved wood burning furnaces are both efficient and economical, he reported.

In the spring, mature lampreys ascend the tributary streams to spawn, and it is believed that a low barrier dam across such streams would substantially reduce their number, said Wigley.

There is no advantage from continued feeding of aureofac or administering aureomycin to beef calves over 2 to I months of age, said J. B. Ferguson of the animal husbandry department. He reported on' experiments with calves in the Cornell beef herd. Daily administration of aureomycin to calves born in the spring of 1951 did reduce the incidence

New Health Problem A newcomer has been added to

the already long list of diseases people get from animals. The new addition is vesicular stomatitis, a virus infection that causes fever and painful blister-like lesions in the mouth of cattle and horses. It closely resembles the dreaded foot-and-mouth disease but is not as serious from an economic standpoint. Headache, muscular pain, chills and fever are the principal symptoms in human beings. Direct contact with infected animals is believed to have caused the human cases thus far observed, although veterinarians think that mosquitoes also may have something to do with spreading
