of a house of idolatry is likened to thecity, as there is a concern of chashad,suspicion. There is a dispute amongauthorities whether it is permissible toenter the courtyard when not in use byidolaters, or whether it is alwaysprohibited. The Rema (YD 149:1) citesboth opinions. Rabbi Eliezer Walden-berg writes that whenever the Remacites two opinions (yesh omrim v'yeshomrim), we follow the second opinion,in this case the stringent opinion,prohibiting entering such a courtyardat all times (Tzitz Eliezer 14:91).

According to Rabbi Waldenberg, thecontemporary church building issimilar to the courtyard of the houseof idolatry, and one should bestringent not to enter the building,even rooms that are not used forprayer and do not have crosses or iconspresent.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein rules that isprohibited to enter achurch building toadmire its beauty, as thearchitecture and artworkwere created to glorifytheir god (Igrot Moshe,YD 3:129). Rabbi Feinsteinadds that the purpose ofsuch beauty is in order tomissionize. He also ruledthat it is prohibited toparticipate in sportsgames held inside of achurch building, in anauditorium not used forservices (Igrot Moshe, OC4:40).

When asked about enter-ing a church to vote,Rabbi Ovadiah Hedaya

was concerned with the crosses andspiritual impurity in the building(Yaskil Avdi, Vol. 8 OC 20:46). RabbiMoshe Shternbuch permits entering achurch building where voting will takeplace, so long as it is thorough aseparate entrance, as it is clear to allthat one is not coming there toworship (Teshuvot V'hanhagot 2:410).But Rabbi Menash Klein rules that evenif the voting is held in a room with nocrosses or icons, it is forbidden toenter a church to vote as one isobligated to distance himself formidolatry (Mishneh Halachot 6:139).

Based on the above, one should bestringent not to enter a churchbuilding, even rooms that are not usedfor worship, unless there are extremecircumstances (e.g. participating in atwelve-step program, IDF soldiers pro-tecting civilian life).
