RESEARCH: FIELD OBSERVATIONS

• No information about cultural Interest points (tourists);

• No awareness of surroundings (teenagers/students);

• Need to be constantly stimulated by technology (teenagers/students);

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Tourists and citizens have limited knowledge about Canterbury.

The city does not have efficient means of offering cultural and architectural information to the tourists, also failing to engage young and elder citizens into the activities happening in town, allowing a decreasing level of human interactions.

SOLUTION: DISCOVER CANTERBURY

An interactive system which will integrate a map of Canterbury to create a more communal and exciting way to explore and navigate around the City.

It will incorporate upcoming events, places to eat/drink as well as the feature of a simple navigation system, that will help people get from place to place.

• Canterbury East Railway Station has approximately 1.04 Million people use the station annually.

• Navigation and Advertising to make it easily spotted.

• Out of the way of the flow of people coming from the station.

• Enough space to use the motion sensors.

• At the beginning and end of most peoples’ journeys.

CANTERBURY WEST

• Has roughly 2.2 million people use the rail station annually.

• Where many people start and end their journey.

• Positioned out of the way of traffic.

• Enough space to move around for motion sense.

• Will have advertising around to ensure people know its there.

THE TERRACE

• Where a large amount of people walk through.

• In the main city centre, makes it easier for people to find.

• Out of the way of the main path.

• Not in the limelight, people won’t be afraid to do it in front of public.

CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

• Renting space in shop window to place Discover Canterbury.

• Out of the way of the road and traffic.

• In a place where many tourist pass through.

BUS STATION

• Two locations near bus stop, at each main place for people to walk through from buses.

• On side of the wall, out of the way of the main walk through and sheltered.

• Where many people start and end their journeys.

• Permission needs to be asked from MMX who owns Whitefriars, however stand alone points can be created.

MARKETINGOlder PeopleAdvertise in Newspapers such as the Kentish Gazette, hold information events at Age UK, and at local Community Centres such as St. Stephens.

TouristsHave large advertisements around the area of where Discover Canterbury is, and trails on the ground leading to it at the Train stations and Bus stations. Also advertise on visit Canterbury website and at Tourist Information Points.

LocalsAdvertise in Local Newspapers such as Canterbury Times, and also on online Newspapers. Also advertise in local community Centres, and have advertising in the City Centre pointing to where they are.

StudentsAdvertise on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, where people can also share their stories. Create a short introduction video which can be uploaded to YouTube. Can also advertise in Student Newspaper Inquire, and online on Kent Tab.

USER GROUPS: RELEVANCE & HOW

Older PeopleCreate something easy to use to navigate around the City, and what’s on > Have local training sessions to help them understand how to use it, simple interface.

Tourists

Easy to find local Landmarks and Interest Points > easy to access, no need to sign up and available in many different languages.

LocalsShow upcoming events and where to find certain shops/restaurants > Involves them into community.

StudentsPlanning of the day/night, how to find places and interesting to use > makes it easier to discover more places in Canterbury.

GETTING PEOPLE TOGETHER

Discover Canterbury has been designed to appeal to as many people as possible, to create a community feel. It encourages people to share their stories as well as encouraging people to explore what is not just on the main high street.

Aims:

- Help local businesses by encouraging exploration;

- Get people involved in local events by making them easy to find;

- Inspire people to share their stories from Canterbury through the Oko;
