A unique gAthering of believers in April 1914 gAve birth to whAt we know As the generAl CounCil of the Assemblies of god.

From Hot Springs, Arkansas the flame of Pentecost quickly spread as preachers passionately

began to promote an initiative of world-wide evangelism. The humble group of approximately 300

probably could have never dreamed that constitutes would multiply by the millions. Today, our

world family consists of over 65 million adherents.

The history of our Oklahoma Fellowship dates to a Tulsa tent campmeeting held on the bank of the

Arkansas River only three months following the Hot Springs meeting. In July of 1914, the structural

foundation of the Oklahoma District Council of the Assemblies of God came into existence.

April 25 and 26 we will assemble to worship and celebrate during the 98th Oklahoma District

Council. We have much for which to give praise! I urge every member of our Oklahoma family to set

aside the time and join us in Oklahoma City, 8701 North Kelley, for these two days. Come expecting

a miracle!

Our guest speaker lives in the world of evange-

lism. Greg and Sandy Mundis serve as the Eu-

rope Regional Director for the Assemblies of God

World Missions. They bring a fresh word that

excites me about the future as God continues

to pour His Spirit upon today’s generation! I am

delighted to present Greg to our family and fully

believe this District Council will inspire all who

come expecting.

Two elections are scheduled for our time together. The positions of District Secretary and the Execu-

tive Presbyter for the Eastern Zone will be balloted upon. Exciting reports will be shared regarding

ministries as well as goals for the future. One of our largest groups of applicants will be presented

and celebrated through the Act of Ordination. We will remember our heroes that have left this world

and share Communion in anticipation of our Lord’s return.

Linda and I are honored to serve you and we are excited

about the opportunity of sharing these days of fellowship

with our Oklahoma Family!

$140.2 million is a significant amount of money. According

to the Department of Labor (DOL), that is amount of money em-

ployers were forced to pay in 2008 for violating the minimum

wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards

Act (FLSA). The vast majority of that figure - $123 million – was

directly tied to overtime violations. Faced with a two-year

statute of limitations for unintentional violations, and a three-

year statute of limitations and subsequent fines for intentional

violations, church leaders would be wise to take a hard look at

how employees are both classified and compensated.

Under FLSA, non-exempt employees – employees who are not

exempt from minimum wage and overtime requirements – are

required to be paid at least minimum wage ($7.25 per hour)

for the first 40 hours worked in a given workweek, and a rate

of one and one-half times their regular hourly rate for all time

worked over 40 hours.

Two Common Mistakes Churches Make Regarding Overtime Pay:

1 Assuming that paying an employee a salary and

giving them a special job-title automatically

makes them an exempt employee under FLSA. The fact

that a church employee is paid a salary or possesses a

certain title is not a guarantee that the church is not re-

quired to pay overtime in the event the individual works

more than 40-hours in a given week. While there are

clearly delineated exceptions for executive, administra-

tive, professional, computer, and outside sales employ-

ees under FLSA, a thorough examination of the indi-

vidual’s actual job duties is required to see if they truly

are exempt. In other words, it’s not what you say they

do which determines whether an employee is exempt or

non-exempt, it is what they actually do. Fact Sheet #17A

on the DOL website (www.dol.gov) provides a detailed

explanation of which employees truly qualify for which

exemptions.

2 Assuming that compensatory time can be offered

in lieu of overtime pay. Providing an employee

with compensatory (comp) time refers to the practice

of providing paid time off for hours worked in excess

of 40, in lieu of paying the required overtime. At the

current time, FLSA only allows public sector – govern-

ment – employers to provide this benefit. Private sector

employers – including churches – are prohibited from

using this practice. The right to receive overtime pay is

not a right that an employee is able to waive under the

law. Simply put, if they qualify for it and they work it,

you are required to pay it.

Overtime pay can be a costly added expense over the course of

a year. With proper management and thoughtful preparation,

the added cost can be minimized, if not eliminated all together.

The point is not to avoid paying people what they are worth,

or short-change the people which make the ministry effective.

The point is to become proper stewards of the resources at

your disposal, and to ensure that as the ministry grows, funds

can be utilized in the best and most effective way possible.

Additional resources and more detailed information can be

found at the U.S. Department of Labor’s website:

NUESTRA MISIÓN EN EL MUNDO...

2. ADORAR A DIOS.

Nuestro Señor Jesucristo buscaba a aquellos

ley Ave., Oklahoma City, OK. La junta comenzará a las 10 am.

Oklahoma Teen Challenge continues to grow, making room

for many more adolescents and young adults needing its

services. Last year plans were developed to begin the new

Oklahoma City Teen Challenge Center, an adult men’s program.

With all the hurdles passed and the city permits granted the

new center now houses and directs 20 adult men with beds

for 15 more. Pastor Deborah Burke and Oklahoma City Inner-

City Church have made available their facilities located at

2212 S.W. 55th Street, for this new T.C. Center. Mike Messier

directs the Oklahoma City Teen Challenge Center under the

auspices of Wayne Gray, Executive Director of Oklahoma Teen

Challenge.

The Sonrise Ranch Center in Cache operates at or near capac-

ity all the time with 44 beds. When the new Everitt Center

is completed at Sonrise Ranch the capacity will increase to

60. Hopefully, the Everitt Center can be completed this year.

Financial gifts and work crews would definitely be welcome.

New Lifehouse and Brush Creek Boys Ranch in Northeastern

Oklahoma continue to bless teenagers and their families with

around the clock supervision and education. Administratively

both centers are directed by Shawn and Shanon Blankenship.

The adolescent centers house at present 35 young people.

Freedom House in Sapulpa, under the direction of Karen Coon,

keeps improving its facilities as the ministry there serves adult

women. From 10-15 women reside at Freedom House at any

given time.

From a small beginning over 23 years ago to a multi-site,

multi-million dollar ministry today, Teen Challenge moves

ahead, ever growing to help meet needs among our families

and churches in Oklahoma. May God ever bless Oklahoma

Teen Challenge.

What an awesome time was had at our LIFE Rallies around the state! A heartfelt thanks

to the sectional representatives for a job well done in each section. LIFE Missions Pledges

totaled $121,501.12! Thank you ladies for your heartbeat for Missions!!! If you have not

made a LIFE Pledge for 2011 you still have time. The project we are focusing on this year

is equipping the kitchen at the new campground in Sparks. We need every ladies group to

participate in seeing this dream come to pass! I am praying for God to give your ladies fresh

ideas and innovative ways to raise the funds needed for this project.

SPEEDTHELIGHTThank you once again for your faithful giving to STL in 2010. The churches

and student ministries across Oklahoma gave $259,840.44 this last year for the

purchase of vehicles and sound equipment to be given to our missionaries all

around the world. In weeks to come we will be sharing some of the details of

your giving and what & who it went to.

One thing I have realized walking with my son Grayson through his fight with can-

cer is that life continues on. With that said we are already into a new year, thank

you to all the student ministries who participated in STL Launch back in January.

We saw over $350,000. worth of goals come in for STL for 2011 with more on the

way. If you have not yet set a goal for STL as a student ministry, let me challenge

you to take up this cause and give your students the opportunity to give. Listen

to what students at Bartlesville 1st A/G did to raise funds and awareness for STL:

When a couple guys saw the forecast for early February, they realized that they

had to capitalize on the opportunity. Flyers were made and the word got out

quickly that if you needed your driveways and sidewalks cleared during the

winter storms, there were a few teenagers that would shovel for a donation to

missions. Two record breaking snowfalls and 36 houses later, four high school

guys from Bartlesville (Johnathon Weber, Kendall Veach, Derek T. Mabon, John-

Paul White) raised over $2,000 for Speed the Light by shoveling snow!

This story begs the question, “What can I do for STL?” “What resources do I have

around me to make a difference?”

Our Goal this year in Oklahoma is to give $500,000.00 to STL! Will you be a part?

WHY I’M A NEXT GENERATION PARTNER?“Without a clear defined definition of the future we have no hope, and I think the

NEXT generation campaign clearly defines what we want to do and thats to provide

a new camp for generations to come so that they can find hope?”

BGMCupdateThis year the Oklahoma District did an outstanding job by giving $ 225,955.63 to

BGMC, placing us fourth in the nation once again. For 2011, we have set a goal of

$300,000. If we meet and surpass this goal, I have agreed to make a trip to the Georgia

Aquarium, where I will swim in the shark tank. I want to thank all of our churches for giv-

ing to BGMC this year. You have done a terrific job in helping spread the gospel. I would

also like to say, if your church does not participate in BGMC, please prayerfully consider

doing so. A big thank you to David and Tracy Zentz our District BGMC Coordinators,

for their tireless effort in promoting this ministry to churches around the district. This

couple loves BGMC and would welcome the opportunity to come to your church and

share their passion for this wonderful ministry with your kids. If you would like to receive

more information about BGMC you can go online at www.bgmc.ag.org, or you can contact
