ThanksgivingandChristmashavealwaysbeenaboutlove,aboutwhatisgoodintheworld;andthepossibilitiesandopportunitieswhicharepresentinthebestofhumankind.Freemasonryalwaysmakesitsinfluencefeltonthepositivesideoflife’sequationofupsanddowns.TheScottishRite,withitsexaltedphilosophy,itsmoralandintellectualinspiration,itspoliticalandreligioustruths,isperhapspositionedbettertodaythanatanytimeinthisgenerationtopresentitsidealstogoodmentheworldover--menofallbackgroundsandcreedswhoarehungryforwhatisrightandtrueinhumanlife. Brethren,weareindeedenteringuponanewseason,anewyear—atimethatcantruthfullybedesignatedasa year of opportunityforMasonstheworldover.MaywefillitwithLoveandPeace,withHappinessbyhelpingothers, by being better Masons ourselves, and by letting our fellow men know that, in a world of economic uncertaintyandpoliticalchaos,ofnewsocialandpoliticalidealsandcreedscausingsomuchturmoil;thecalm,stillvoiceofMasonry,alwaysprepared,movinglikeastartodothatwhichisrightbecauseitisright—beckonsustrulytobegoodmen—doingagreatwork! Inalltheconfusion,withallthebustleandactivityofourtimes,itisgoodtoremembertheimportanceofamomentofquiet,ofreflection,ofthekindofthoughtthatkeepsusbalanced.TheScottishRitecallsthistheWay of the Mystery--thesignificanceofanoccasionalinnerlook,thatcalmnesswhichteachesustosit still for awhile. Time and again, our Degrees instruct us that wisdom is achieved only by reflection and contemplation. More andmore,weareforcedtosubstituteinformationforinsight;processdataforthought.Yet,themessageoftheholidayseasonbeckonsusalwaystolistentoourinnerconscience. “Teach us to sit still.” Maythisgoodseasonoftheyearprovideuswithopportunitiestositstill,toshareinthesenseofbeingthankful,tobeinthepresenceoftheHoly,taketimeforalittlespirit-restoringthought.MaywehavethechancetosettherigorsofourtimeasideforjustawhiletocelebrateourownuniquenessasahumanbeingandachildofGod. Why the Scottish Rite is the Focus of Dan Brown’s Message

IfyouhavenotreadDanBrown’snew book, The Lost Symbol, you may want topickupacopy.Ofcourse,agood detective novel is always fun and few writers are better than Brown at weaving a good story around hid-denthings.Buttheunderlyingthemeof The Lost Symbol is the Ancient Mysteries. The journey or questfor discovery of what is hidden in Brown’sbookisnothinglessthantheLost Word! There’s scarcely aFree-mason who would not recognize this as one of the foundational themes of ourOrder!ThismakesthemessageofBrown’s book a bit more than blaséfor the more astute members of the world’soldestfraternity. In thenovel,oneof theprinciplecharacters is a fellow named PeterSolomon (memorablename). It turnsout he is both the Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite in Washington DC andWorshipfulMasterofhisLodgeinthenation’scapital.Hespendsagoodbit of time alluding to the knowledge of the Ancients and their traditions of study.Inthestory,Solomonpositsthatwhat science has recently learned with its new discoveries concerning the structureandprogressoftheuniversewas also known by the ancient phi-losophers, mathematicians, religiousscholarsandmystics.Ournewscienceis,infact,oldknowledge. Of course, this comes as no real revelation to Scottish Rite Masons since we spend a good deal of ourtime learning and discussing the an-cientwisdomtraditions.TheRitede-votesfiveDegrees specifically to theAncientMysteryreligions.Infact,theMysteries in general are woven around manyoftheDegrees. We all know the purpose of theMysteries was to purify one’s bodyandmind, and increase one’s aware-ness of his spiritual identity as hemadehispersonaljourneytoself-dis-covery.ButtheMysterieshadanotherprofoundaspectwhichdirectlytiestothe theme of The Lost Symbol. Thischaracteristicwas first articulated byClemens ofAlexandria when he re-vealed that “what was taught in the

great Mysteries concerned the Uni-verse, and was the completion and perfection of all instruction.” The Mysteries had many other features, but this overriding cosmic idea dealt withquestionsofthesunandstars,theuniverse as the creation of God, and of man’splaceinit. InBrown’sbook,thisthemereso-natesnotably.Thegreatestenigmaofhumankindis thequestionofwhoorwhat created the Universe. Until re-cently, science and psychology havetaken a sort of atheistic approach tothe idea of a God-inspired creation.Science and psychology thrive in aworldofstatistics.Intheexamplesofpsychology, the investigation alwayscenters around normal human devel-opment. Psychology uses “normal”asastatisticalconcept–measuringallbehavioraroundit.Likewise, Science uses logic to testtheoretical ideas.Thus, asking a sci-entisttoinvolveasupernaturalagencythattranscendsthelawsofphysicstoexplainwhattheyalreadyknowcameto be because of a big bang, is asking abitmuch. But new advances in what sci-entists know in their understanding of the very early universe has trans-formed the entire debate, and recast thisageoldpuzzleinatotallydiffer-entlight.Before1940,thecentralideaofphysicswasthattherewasnobig-bang moment at which time all matter wascreated.Instead,theUniversejustwas;andasitexpanded,newparticleswere continuously created to fill upthegapssothattheaveragedensityoftheuniverseremainedunchanged.Theidea was that any individual galaxysimply passed through its life cycle,andwhenitsstarsdied,newgalaxieswere already formed from the newly createdmattertoreplacetheold.Thiswas called the “steady-state theory”oftheuniverse.Ithasnobeginningorend. For many scientists, the theorywas particularly interesting because,byabolishingthe“Big-Bang”theory,they had once and for all removed the needforaCreator.Theuniversecould

operate like a perpetual clock that isselfwinding.Suchaplacedoesn’tre-quireanyDivineinterventiontostartitorkeepitrunning. Fortunately,thesteady-statetheo-ryfelloutoffavornotonphilosophi-calgrounds,butbecauseitwasprovenby large radio telescopes tobe false.Then,in1965,itwasdiscoveredthatthe universe was, in fact, bathed in heatradiation—whichhassinceprov-entobearelicofabigbang.Allofasudden, the designer argument could notbecategorizedasrightorwrong.Astronomer James Jeans proclaimedthat “the universe appears to have been designed by a pure mathemati-cian. It begins to look more like a great thought than like a great machine.” Hello!Doweneedtoberemind-ed again of the meaning of the letter ‘G?!!’ Well, even the early Greek phi-losophers recognized that the orderand harmony of the cosmos demanded explanation.Newtonhimselfbelieved“this most beautiful system of the sun, planets and comets could only pro-ceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent powerful Being.” The problemis that,whileclearevidenceof design exists so much in nature,itsproofremainshiddeninsomewayfromus.Andwecan’tuselogicaloneto make such discoveries. Scientificproof can take us only so far.To gopastthatpointrequiresfaith. Buttheproblemwithfaithaloneisthatitissooftenuntrustworthy.Howcanonebe sure thatwhathe experi-ences is real? How can he guard him-selfagainstgivingway topureemo-tionalism in the belief that he is being transportedonlybyfaith? The ancients knew that the answer to the dilemma of logic and faith was Reason. While reason, like science,could not take one into the presenceof Deity, it could stand to validate one’sfaithexperiencewhilereinforc-ingone’ssenseoflogic.TheAncientsknew that it was in this balance, this equilibriumbetweenfaithandreasonwheretruereligioncouldbefound.

Do our rituals not teach of the bal-ancingpowerofwisdom,strengthandbeauty in all things? Is not the search for what is hidden always a construc-tive process when guided by logic,faith,andreason?Andisn’ttheacqui-sition of knowledge and wisdom the true labor of life? Whenweprobethemysteries,weare always engaged in metaphysicalwork.And to consciously engage inthis kind of work is Initiation. This was what Peter Solomonknew. Or perhaps it is what DanBrown knows and is trying to tell the worldthroughhim.

Writingaboutamystery-adven-turebookcanbetricky.Thepersonwho gives away the ending or clues to the ending of such a book ranks lower than pond scum on the lad-der of creation.On the other hand,thereissomuchofexcellenceinthisbook,andsomuchofimportancetoMasons,thatitsimplycannotbeig-nored. The most amazing thing to me is how Dan Brown, who is not a mem-beroftheFraternity,capturedsowellandsoaccuratelytheveryspiritandessenceoftheCraft.And,aswithallhis books, you find yourself learn-ingorrememberingmanythings–hesneaks in an education and you nev-ernotice.RexHutchens,Ph.D.,33°,Grand Cross once remarked that the universal sign ofMasonic Enlight-enment was made by smiting the foreheadwiththepalmofthehand,while saying, “How could I havemissed thatalltheseyears?”Itmightbeusefultopracticethatgesturebe-forereadingthebook:it’sasafebetMasons will learn something about Masonryinthesepages. Brown does a fine job of an-swering many of the non-thinkingcriticismsoftheCraftweoftenhear.Theseexamplescomefromaflash-

back to a discussion in a class he was teaching. “So tell me, what are the three prerequisites for an ideology to be considered a religion?” “ABC” one woman offered. “Assure, Believe, Convert.” “Correct,” Langdon said. “Re-ligions assure salvation; believe in a precise theology; and religions convert nonbelievers.” He paused, “Masonry, however, is batting zero for three. Masons make no promises of salvation; they have no specific theology; and they do not seek to convert you. In fact, within Masonic lodges, discussions of religion are prohibited.” “So...Masonry isantireligious?” “On the contrary. One of the prerequisites for becoming a Mason is that you must believe in a higher power. The difference between Ma-sonic spirituality and organized re-ligion is that the Masons do not im-pose a specific definition of name on a higher power.”And later: “Professor Langdon,” called a young man with curly hair in the back row, “if Masonry is not a secret society, not a corporation, and not a religion, then what is it?” “Well, if you were to ask a Ma-son, he would offer the following definition: Masonry is a system of morality, veiled in allegory and il-lustrated by symbols.” “Sounds to me like a euphemism for ‘freaky cult.’” “Freaky,you say?” “Hell yes!” the kid said, stand-ing up. “I heard what they do inside those secret buildings! Weird candle-light rituals with coffins, and nooses, and drinking wine out of skulls. Now that’sfreaky!” Langdon scanned the class. “Does that sound freaky to anyone else?” “Yes!” they all chimed in.

Langdon feigned a sad sigh. “Too bad. If that’s too freaky for you, then I know you’ll never want to join my cult.” Silence settled over the room.The student from the Women’sCenter lookeduneasy.“You’re inacult?” Langdon nodded and loweredhisvoicetoaconspiratorialwhisper.“Don’ttellanyone,butonthepaganday of the sun god Ra, I kneel at the foot of an ancient instrument of tor-ture and consume ritualistic symbols ofbloodandflesh. Theclasslookedhorrified. Langdonshrugged,“Andifanyof you care to join me, come to the Harvard chapel on Sunday. Kneelbeneath thecrucifix,and takeHolyCommunion.” Theclassroomremainedsilent. Langdon winked. “Open yourminds,myfriends.Weallfearwhatwedonotunderstand.” Theseareexamplesofthevoiceof reason Brown brings to the dis-cussion of Freemasonry. We owehim a great deal for having brought thedialogueabouttheFraternitytoanewlevelofrationalthought. By the way, do not expectto find Oklahoma ritual quoted inthe book. During his research theauthor had the monitors of many states available to him, to say noth-ingofthemultitudeofexposuresontheInternet.Hehasskillfullywovenritual references from these differ-ent strands to give the feeling of the workwithoutthespecificlanguage. So enjoy the book for the light it shedsonFreemasonry,butdon’tlosesight of the fact that you are reading a cracking good adventure yarn by a masterofhiscraft.It’sagreatbook!

A Book Review – The Lost Symbol

TheTulsaRiteCareClinicwasopenedin1977,andhasservedapproximately4,000clientssince.Oneofthereasons that our Clinic has been a success story is that our Clinic Director, Adrienne Rogers, realized that the Clinic couldhelpmoreclientsanddosomoreeffectivelyiftheclientparents/guardianspartneredtogethertodelivertheneededtherapytothechild. Fromthissimplerealization,grewtheHomeTherapyProtocolthatourclinicuseseventoday,andwhichhasbeenadoptedbyotherClinics. Justaswithmanyother long termsituationswherea familymemberhelps thetherapyteam,thisprotocolinvolvesteachingtheparents/guardianstoworkwiththeclientbetweenappointments.Yes,ourclientshavehomework!Whenthefamilymemberworkswiththeclientathome,theworkdonebytheclinicianisgreatlyreinforced.Asaresult,itisnotnecessaryforthatparticularclienttobeseenintheofficeasfre-quentlyaswouldberequiredwithoutthe“homework.”Thisallowseachclienttostillprogressasquicklyashe/shecan,whilegivingtheclinicalstafftimeavailabletoworkwithmoreclientsthanotherwisepossible!Currently,theweeklycaseloadisapproximately75. TheTulsaRiteCareCliniciscurrentlystaffedbyonefull-timeclinician,andthreepart-timeclinicians.AllhaveobtainedaMastersdegreeinSpeechLanguagePathology,andhaveearnedtheirCertificateofClinicalCompetencydesignationfromtheAmericanSpeech&LanguageAssociation.Earningthisrecognitionrequiresthatacliniciannotonlyhasacquiredthe“book”knowledgenecessarytopractice,buthasdonetherapyunderthesupervisionofanexperienced,certifiedclinician.Onlywhentheclinicianhasprovenhisorherproficiencyinthatspecialtywillthecertificationbegranted. Ourclientsarechildrenmorethan1½but less than12yearsofagewhohavedifficultytalkingsoas tobeunderstoodbyothers,understandingverbalcommunication,remembering,reading,and/orwritingatageappropri-atelevelsnotresultingfrompermanenthearingloss,emotionaldisturbance,autism,orintellectualhandicap.Theonlycriteriafortreatingclientareageanddisorder:ifthechildiswithintheClinicparametersandcanbehelped,therapywillbeofferedtothatchild. TheClinichasnocashregisterorbillingsystem,alltherapyiswithoutchargetotheclientfamily.TheClinicacceptsnoinsurance,nogovernmentgrantsorcon-tracts,andisnotaUnitedWayagency,butisfundedbyprivategrantsandthegener-ousdonationsofyou,themembersoftheTulsaScottishRite. TULSA SCOTTISH RITE

A major theme in Masonry is that itisajourney–alifelongjourneyin-tendedtoresultinprofound,positive,changeandgrowthwithinourselves.This was very subtly communicated tousbyasimplestatementmadetous when the Master congratulated us at the conclusion of our Craft de-grees: “MyBrother, youhave thisevening been raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason…” Formany, the profound significance ofthat statement does not become clear until much later on that journey; the Lodgehasfulfilleditsresponsibilityto us by teaching us how to use our tools, but cannot wield those tools forus. It really isup toeach indi-

vidual to become aMasterMason!And how dowemake progress onthatparticularjourney? One of the best ways is to become abettereducatedMason.Wearead-monishedasanEnteredApprenticethat we should “… converse withwell informed Brethren, who will be always as ready to give as you willbereadytoreceiveinstruction.”Today’s Masons have a wealth ofresources available to become better educatedaboutMasonry.WhateveryourparticularMasonicinterestmaybe,allyouneeddoisknock.Thereis somebody ready, willing, and able to open the door to greater knowl-edgetoyou!
