Lake OkeechobeeFishing Report

CAPTAIN MIKE SHELLENwww.OkeechobeeBassFishing.com

863-357-0892

Brought to you by

Heavy rainfall north of the lake is proving to be a blessing to

Lake Okeechobee. Some of the largest rains in nearly 100 years were recorded north of the lake leaving the Kissimmee Basin to struggle with flood conditions.

Navigation on the Kissimmee River is closed due to the huge inundation of water coming into the lake from the S-65E structure north of the lake. Water is flowing into the lake at a rate of just over 18000 cfs from the Kissimmee River. Speculation abounds on what level the lake will ultimately reach, but we are just thankful for the rain. Higher lake levels means local businesses can look forward to a productive and thriving sea-son. The BASS elite series has committed to coming to Okeecho-bee for an event, coupled with the normal FLW tournaments, there should money pumped into the local economy.

The lake has only risen seven to eight inches so far and already anglers are reporting that the bass are moving further back into the cover. It will take some time for the fish to adjust to the higher wa-

ter levels, eventually the outside grass lines will be the place to fish. If the lake rises enough to ac-cess open areas behind the grass lines the fish will definitely find their way into these areas and take up residence. It is too early to tell how the higher water levels will affect fishing and the fishermen.

The fishery is as healthy as it has been in many years and there are hordes of bass to be found and caught in every part of the lake. Caution should still be used when operating on the lake. Many areas are still very shallow and tearing up your boat is not a great way to end your day.
