Department of Biomaterials Biomaterials are materials (synthetic and natural; solid and sometimes liquid) that are used in medical devices or in contact with biological systems. Biomaterials origins stem from the use of synthetic materials (metals, polymer & ceramics) in diverse applications as dental restorations, artificial hips and Vascular graphs. More recently the scope of the field has broadened to include studies of natural tissues, cellular structures, and biomacromolecules, sometimes collectively referred to as biological materials. Biological tissue shows a functionally and morphologically well-designed structure. Biomaterials and bioengineering technique have tremendous potential to recover or reproduce the specific functions or morphology of the biological tissue. Our lab focuses on the following 5 topics. Based on these topics we engage to develop novel biomaterials, tools and technique for medical treatment and for life science researches. The main research topics 1. Tissue regeneration by using biomaterials and biologic materials 2. Tissue reconstruction by using biomaterials 3. Multi-scale understanding of interface between biomaterials and biological tissue 4. Development of cell/tissue manipulation technique for in vitro tissue synthesis 5. Controlling infection, inflammation, and immunity by using biomaterials and biologic materials Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2-5-1 Shikata-cho , Kita-ku , Okayama, 700-8558 E-mail:[email protected] TEL086-235-6667 FAX086-235-6669 URL http://www.okayama-u.ac.jp/user/biomat

Department of Biomaterials

Biomaterials are materials (synthetic and natural; solid and sometimes liquid) that are used in medical devices or in contact with biological systems. Biomaterials originsstem from the use of synthetic materials (metals, polymer & ceramics) in diverse applications as dental restorations, artificial hips and Vascular graphs. More recentlythe scope of the field has broadened to include studies of natural tissues, cellular structures, and biomacromolecules, sometimes collectively referred to as biological materials.

Biological tissue shows a functionally and

morphologically well-designed structure.

Biomaterials and bioengineering technique

have tremendous potential to recover or

reproduce the specific functions or morphology

of the biological tissue. Our lab focuses on the

following 5 topics. Based on these topics we

engage to develop novel biomaterials, tools

and technique for medical treatment and

for life science researches.

The main research topics1. Tissue regeneration by using biomaterials and biologic

materials

2. Tissue reconstruction by using biomaterials

3. Multi-scale understanding of interface between

biomaterials and biological tissue

4. Development of cell/tissue manipulation technique for

in vitro tissue synthesis

5. Controlling infection, inflammation, and immunity by

using biomaterials and biologic materials
