OIS Karts success In March 2016 we started a very funny project with

our students. We were invited to participate in a

rolling kart competition. It wasn´t only a race, but

also a competition for the best creative car.

So, me, Manuel Gião and Mr.Cunha, and a group of

students started to work on the first OIS rolling

kart! It was a long process, but at the end,

everybody was very happy! We won one of the

races and we won the best creative car!

Like I used to say to my students, ART IS EVERY

4– 29 JULY 2016

2015-16 has demonstrated the heart of the students at OIS during their Service as Action. Within school the students have been given so many opportunities to show their care and interest in our school environment and community.

Maintaining the grounds, keeping them free of litter, grooming and walking Sushi and Oddie, ensuring that our school is eco-friendly in constant recycling, are a few of the routines our students have established to show their interest in their learning environment.

The variety and number of out of school activities our students have participated in has been impressive. Awareness of local issues such as the need for; beach clean-up, participating in charity runs, environmental demonstrations, re-food and of course representing their local community in sporting events.

The students who have been recognised and nominated this year for outstanding contributions to Service as Action are as follows;

NEASC Preliminary visit,

May was an exciting month, full of hard work on the part of students sitting for examinations, with teachers supporting them as well as their parents. We also hosted the NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) 3 day Preliminary Visit, which, if we are successful, will allow us to move into the candidate phase of the NEASC accreditation process.

The two visitors were Richard Pacheco a board member of NEASC whom you all know from the Eligibility Visit and Gerry Percy.

These days were very rewarding for the school, once the hard work and top quality of all involved in the teaching and learning at OIS was recognized, as the Management Team (ELT) of OIS was informed during the exit meeting for the Preliminary visit. Consequently we are going to be allowed to start the Self-Study asap and Mr. Steve Bruce-Lomba is going to Chair the process. All of you are going to be given the chance to take part in one of the 7 committees of the Self-Study.

The whole process of the Self-Study is going to begin around June 15th with a survey supervised by Endicott College Research Centre directed to all constituents of the OIS community. We would like you all in the OIS community to participate and give an honest opinion about OIS now, and how we can improve in the near future.

A professora de surf ensinou os alunos a fazer o take off

para que, um dia, se eles quiserem surfar, já saberão uma das bases desta modalidade desportiva.

Os alunos do Year 6 ficaram muito gratos por esta visita, e Filipa Leandro também.

News From The Inf irmary

Besides the fact that you'd literally die without it, there are many, MANY imperative reasons to drink water frequently, every single day. It starts out pretty mild - you might feel thirsty and have a dry mouth. But the long-term effects of not drinking enough water not only have an effect on your weight (in a bad way), but they're also extremely dangerous and life-threatening. Milder Symptoms: Even mild dehydration has strong effects. Here's how you'll feel with a lack of H2O (hint: it's really not fun).

Fatigue, tiredness, sleepiness Headache Constipation Dizziness Mood change, irritability, increased anxiety Sunken eyes Shriveled skin Muscle cramps Joint aches

WHY DO WE NEED TO DRINK WATER ?

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY.

BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T DRINK ENOUGH WATER

Latent Effects: Consistently not drinking enough water for an extended period of time has its effect as well. Although you may brush

off the milder side effects, your body is still suffering - and several of these have a significant bearing on weight gain. Low water, slow metabolism. Your body's ability to remove waste and detoxify is inhibited. In addition, your metabolism is slower

without water. One study found that drinking 4 ½ dl of water daily increases your metabolic rate by 30 percent. Guys. That's literally ONE standard-size water bottle. JUST DRINK IT.

Increased hunger. When you're somewhat dehydrated, your body confuses it for hunger, causing you to eat when you don't need

to. Read: weight gain. Slowed circulation, irregular temperature. Your CV system suffers, and your equilibrium is totally out of whack.

Digestion problems. That constipation we talked about becomes a regular thing. Not fun. Also not great for weight loss.

General fatigue. Same goes for your energy levels. You'll constantly feel tired, unable (or unwilling) to exercise, and unable to concentrate.

Increased blood sugar. Your body needs water to break down sugar. If you're

diabetic, this is especially dangerous.

Severe Symptoms: If things get worse, so do your symptoms. These are the "go

to the hospital" signs. Low blood pressure, with a rapid heartbeat Fever Delirium, unconsciousness Severe diarrhea and/or vomiting Inability to keep fluids down.

Severe Long-Term Effects: Now for the worst of it. Yes, it's terrible that dehydration can make you gain weight (or keep you from losing it), but there are some bigger issues at hand. If you're truly neglecting your water intake, this should likely help you get on track. Here's what happens to your body when you don't get enough water -

Heat injury Brain swelling Seizures Hypovolemic shock Kidney failure Coma and death

Now go get yourself a water bottle and FILL. IT. UP.
