Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may we experience together the

grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our worship service is designed to

give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you will

find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available. Leaders: Pastor Nathan Strutz and Vicar Steven Pelischek Pianist: Terri Krueger Cantor: Steve Pelischek

Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front of the Christian Worship hymnal located under the pew chairs.

JULY 18TH - JOIN US AND HELP AT THE MT. HOREB ART FAIR BOOTH Mt. Horeb's annual Art Fair is scheduled for Saturday, July 18. Each year this fun event draws 10,000-15,000 people from throughout the Madison area. It not only includes displays from local artists, but fun activities for the whole family, including the Mt. Horeb Fire Department's Fire Muster. This year, Good News, Our Redeemer, and Resurrection, will participate in a booth together. We will operate our booth throughout the day on Saturday (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).

We will be helping kids assemble and decorate a foam sling shot rocket, similar to the

one pictured to the right.

This will also give us the opportunity to talk with parents and share information about our respective ministries. The event will draw people not only from Mt. Horeb, but from Madison, Verona, and other suburbs as well. You are invited to help out in either or both of the following ways: Volunteer at the Booth Volunteers are needed to be at our booth throughout the day helping the kids assemble their rockets. The day is divided into four shifts. Eight volunteers are needed for each shift. No advance training is required. Each shift overlaps with the previous one so that when you come there will be plenty of people who are able to show you want to do. Feel free to sign up for one or more shifts at the listed times. Supply Materials and Equipment A variety of materials and equipment are needed to make our booth a success. Here's what we need:

A pop up tent (10' x 10' maximum)

WELCOME PAUL, LAURA AND ADDISON KONKOL TO OUR RLC FAMILY On Thursday during the worship service Paul, Laura and daughter Addison were welcomed to RLC by adult confirmation. Welcome the Konkol’s to our RLC family!

CANVASS BLESSINGS Nine members from Resurrection did some good old fashioned door knocking on Monday, June 29. These efforts were very much blessed. In just over one hour of canvassing, we knocked on 75 doors, talked with 48 different individuals/families and met 13 without a church home with whom we will follow up. What a blessing and joy! Our next evening of canvassing will be Monday, July 13, starting at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to join us. You can be paired with an experienced canvasser. Speak with Pastor or Gene Cate for more information.

LAST SUNDAY FOR GIVING TO JIM MIKULA As you probably already know, the father of our Preschool director, Katie Mikula, has been battling cancer. The physical care our Savior has given Jim Mikula through his physicians and spiritual care from God's word, family and friends has been wonderful and a great testament to how God cares for his children. Jim and his family still can use your bold prayers for continued comfort and recovery. In addition, if you are so moved to help Jim financially to defer the many expenses that come with his treatment and care, you will find a box in the entryway where you may place any donations. This box will remain available through the Fourth of July weekend. You may make checks out to Resurrection Lutheran and we will present the entire gift to him from "Your brothers and sisters in Christ at Resurrection Lutheran".

JULY 14TH - ALL RLC LADIES - SIS MEETING AT THE FLYING HOUND PUB All RLC ladies are invited to dinner at the Flying Hound Pub (6317 McKee Rd, Fitchburg, WI 53719, across from Target) on Tuesday, July 14th at 5:30pm. RITE OF INSTALLATION OF RESURRECTION’S OFFICERS

Leader: Dear friends in Christ, In Holy Baptism our Lord Jesus Christ liberated you from sin and death and made you members of his body, the Church. Through Word and Sacrament you have been nurtured in faith. You have now been selected for positions of leadership to serve our Lord on behalf of this congregation. The Lord has entrusted you with an office which you are to carry out as his servants and according to his Word. St. Paul writes concerning service in the church: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.”

One thing which the Lord seeks above all from those who serve is faithfulness: “It is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” The Lord does not seek from us what he has not given to us. But when he does give a gift, his will is that we use it faithfully to his glory and for the benefit of his people.

You are also, as servants of Jesus Christ and workers in this congregation, to set for your own families and the whole church the example of a Christian life. Make the Word of God your foundation and guide. Search it daily for comfort and instruction.

PROMISES BY THOSE BEING INSTALLED

Leader: So that the congregation may be assured of your willingness to serve, I ask you, in the presence of God and this congregation:

Will you diligently and faithfully carry out the office entrusted to you, according to the ability which God gives you? If so, then answer: I will, and I ask God to help me. Officers: I will, and I ask God to help me.

CONFESSION

Leader: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.

(Silence for reflection) ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

Leader: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray. O God, you have prepared joys beyond understanding for those who love you. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. Please be seated

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: ACTS 10:34-48 NIV

34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, 40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

For further discussion or in Vine & Branches groups:

1. Be honest – what makes you feel ALIVE? 2. “Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can’t lose!” (These words are not in the Bible!) Do you have your own catchy phrase or motto? How can you tell if it’s useful or even true? 3. We have been baptized, circumcised, buried WITH CHRIST. We have died and been raised WITH CHRIST. What’s most meaningful to you? What else could you want? 4. Use the Word in Colossians to encourage someone today! YOU ARE GOD; WE PRAISE YOU Te Deum (The congregation sings the refrain immediately after the cantor. The congregation then sings the words printed in bold throughout the verses; returning again to the refrain after each verse. The song continues to the final refrain after the third verse.)

Please be seated CHILDREN’S MESSAGE (all the children are invited to join at the altar area for a devotion) HYMN OF THE DAY: 460 “How Can I Thank You, Lord” (in the red book under your chair) SERMON BASED ON: COLOSSIANS 2: 6-15

GOD MADE YOU ALIVE IN CHRIST!

Questions to consider while listening to the sermon:

1. It’s coming… it’s popular in our country… get excited… it’s ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ . Does this make you feel ALIVE?!? 2. Compare a Friday night football game to the everyday “game of life” ! “Clear Eyes.” 3. GNOSTICISM: false religion(s) promoting “secret knowledge” in addition to or in place of JESUS. 4. Worldly pursuits seem worthwhile (and can be good!). But are they filling you up with LIFE? “Full Hearts.” 5. In whom are we already FULL? Why? 6. To “live your lives in Him” sounds like a tall task. How is this possible? (See verses 6 & 7) “Can’t Lose!” 7. What guarantees our LIFE and victory over sin? (See verses 13 & 14) 8. Remember what Jesus said on Good Friday: “IT IS FINISHED!”

SECOND LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: COLOSSIANS 2:6-15 NIV

Spiritual Fullness in Christ 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self-ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. VERSE OF THE DAY

Leader: “Alleluia! If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Alleluia!” Mark 8:34b Please stand for the Gospel

GOSPEL LESSON: JOHN 3:1-17 NIV

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus 1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” 4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they

Page 11

are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Leader: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise be to you, O Christ! CONFESSION OF FAITH - Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.
