THE CLUB CHAMPION awardto the fairest and best playerin a season is one of themost prestigious and honouredawards for any player. Thisyear the Fremantle FootballClub will proudly unveil itsnew Club Champion award, the Doig Medal.

The Doig Medal honoursthe deep football heritage ofFremantle, represented by themany members of the Doigfamily over the years whohave represented either Eastor South Fremantle FootballClubs since the beginningof the last century.

This year the Club had thehonour of wearing a heritagejumper in the Round 19 gameagainst the Kangaroos thathad its origins in the originalred and white playing uniformof the very first FremantleFootball Club of 1885.

The naming of the Doig Medalnow completes the Club’srecognition and honour ofthe rich football heritageof Fremantle.

Since 1898, the Doig familyhas been an integral part ofthe history of not only Eastand South Fremantle, but alsoof Western Australian footballin general. The familyhas provided seven lifememberships at either club, club best and fairest winners, and club administrators.

Tragically Ron Doig (Senior),who commenced his footballcareer at South Fremantle in

1927 as a 17 year old, and at21 years of age in 1932 asCaptain/Coach of the Club, sustained fatal injuries ina finals match against EastPerth. He played 99 gamesduring his short career, including State games forWestern Australia in 1930. Hewas an outstanding sportsmanhaving also representedAustralia in cricket againstSouth Africa on one occasion.

While many of the Doigs haveplayed with East and SouthFremantle since early lastcentury (see page 2), perhapsthe best known is Georgewho started his footballcareer with the East FremantleFootball Club in 1933, kicking9 goals in his first match. He finished the season with106 goals, the first personto score more than a hundredgoals in a season.

In nine consecutive seasonsfrom 1933 to 1941 Georgekicked more than one hundredgoals a year, with a seasonaverage of 120 and a matchaverage of 5.46 goals pergame. He missed his first andonly match in 1938 after 142games and went on to play202 games before retiring. He also kicked 62 goals in14 state games.

George never missed gettinga goal in any league matchhe played in and scored morethan 10 goals in a game on14 occasions. In 1934,George scored 19 goals

3 behinds one week andfollowed up the next gamewith 13 goals 4 behindsand finished the year with152 goals.

In October 1934, Georgereceived a telegram sentfrom the South MelbournePost Office that read“congratulations on your greatperformance.” The telegramwas sent by the legendaryBob Pratt who in that yearkicked 150 goals for SouthMelbourne in the VFL.

In 1938, the East FremantleFootball Club played a matchagainst a New South Walesteam. A newspaper report onthe match labelled George asthe “Bradman of AustralianRules football” by virtue ofhis (then) six consecutiveseasons of scoring morethan 100 goals.

In September 1988 Georgewas inducted into the WesternAustralian Hall of Champions, which includes representativesfrom all sports.

In October 1995 George wasthe inaugural Inductee into theFremantle Football Club’s Hallof Legends. As part of theEast Fremantle Football Club’scentenary celebrations in1997, he was selected intothe Team of the Century. In 1998 he was an Inauguralinductee in the FremantleSporting Wall of Fame and in2000 he was selected into theWest Australian NewspapersFootball Team of the Century.

THE AFL DEDICATED Round19 to the theme offootball's heritage, recognising the traditionsand history of the game.Australian football clubsare among the oldestsporting clubs in the worldand the intention of theRound 19 events was tosupport the fans' love of thegame and for their team.

The Fremantle Football Clubwore a jumper its Round 19game against the Kangaroosat the MCG that had itsorigins in that worn by theFremantle Football Club thatcontested the first premiershipin 1885.

In that year, the premiershipwas contested by 4 Clubs –Rovers (predecessor of thePerth Football Club),Victorians and Perth HighSchool all of which were Perthbased plus Fremantle, whowore a red and white playingstrip. Perth High Schoolwithdrew after only a coupleof matches. In 1886, a secondFremantle-based side, Unions, brought the number of teamsback to four. Fremantle wonall seven matches contested. The Club’s inaugural captainwas Bill Bateman.

In 1887, Fremantle did notcontinue in the competition

leaving Unions as the onlyFremantle team. Unionsadopted Fremantle’s red andwhite playing uniforms thatyear and in 1890, theyadopted the FremantleFootball Club name. The team won flags in1888 and 1889 as Unionsand in 1890 as Fremantle.

Between 1892 and 1896Fremantle won fiveconsecutive flags and wereagain successful in 1898, theClub’s last season. The Clubfolded reputedly over a disputewith players over uniforms andtrain fares.

In 1898 a new club emergedat the Port, East Fremantle, wearing the blue and whitethey continue to wear today, and broke through for its firstpremiership in 1900, the yearthat also saw SouthFremantle, wearing redand white, admitted tothe competition.

Interestingly, in 1901 NorthFremantle was admitted to thecompetition and with limitedsuccess would last only 15seasons in the competition.

East and South Fremantlehave since gone on to forgeone of the most intenserivalries in football and thewearing of the red and whitejumper of the originalFremantle Football Club in theHeritage Round against theKangaroos recognises the richfootball heritage of Fremantle.

“THERE IS no doubt that oursupporters help us immenselywhen we play at home,”says captain Peter Bell.“The passion of our supportersand the noise they make givesus an added advantage bybecoming our 23rd man.”

“And our interstate supportersare growing in number, theyare very passionate and vocal,we really do appreciate andrespond to their support,”Bell said. “It was great to getgood wins in Melbourne thisyear and celebrate with themand none better than afterthe nail-biter against theKangaroos at the MCG

Season 2003 has seen morepeople attend home gamesthan at any other time inthe Club’s history. Homeattendances surpassed the300,000 mark in a season forthe first time after the Round18 game against Richmond.By the conclusion of the lasthome game in Round 20, atotal of 337,486 people had

come to Subiaco Oval at anaverage of 30,681 per game.

Along the way, new homegame attendance records havebeen set against every visitingteam this year with theexception of the Round 4game against the Kangaroos.

A new record for a non-Derbyhome game was set against theWestern Bulldogs in Round 20when 35,518 people watchedthe team secure the Club’shistoric first finals appearance.

And the increased attendancesmake a difference off the fieldwith increased revenuescontributing significantly tothe Club’s improved financialperformance in 2003.

ThePurple Haze game againstRichmond aimed to be a uniqueday by creating a total andcomplete visual experiencearound the ground with allsupporters, members, corporateguests and Fremantle staffdonned in purple. The playersjoined in the spirit of the day, wearing a unique all purpleplaying uniform.

In a unique partnership withthe Club, lawyers, Phillips Fox,sponsored the first Purple Hazegame and as supporters of theStarlight Children’s Foundationof Australia, the day wasnamed the 2003 PhillipsFox/Starlight Purple HazeGame. WELCOME to Luke’s Lounge. Thanks to EMI/Virgin, I willbe bringing reviews of thelatest CDs to cater for alltastes for our members andsupporters. Luke’s Loungeis also available on the Club’sInternet Site and I lookforward to bringingyou CD reviews eachand every month.

ONE DROP EASTSALMONELLA DUBAustralian group‘salmonella dub’blends a little bit ofrap with funky beatsand some interesting melodiesin their album “one drop east”.It appears, as you listen yourway through this CD, that it’sthe music and not the vocallines that are the focus. The vocals are few, andinterspersed between longsegments of clever musicalarrangement. Furthermore, when delivered, the vocalsare always seemingly in the

background, often with muchreverb so that they really blendin. The opening two songs onthe album “Longtime” and“Slide” are both very catchytunes and have an almostreggae feel to them, while thenext two – “Dancehall Girl” and“Nu Steppa”– are a little faster.I’d have to say my favouritesong is track five – “Dub

Survivor”. It has areally rolling beat to itsupported by a prettycool trumpet melody. For our youngerreaders interested inpurchasing thisalbum, parental consent maybe required due

to its PG rating.

ANGELAMANDA PEREZAmanda Perez is thenew girl on the block. The talented 22 year-old singer-songwriter-producer-rapper ismaking an impact on the musicindustry. You may be aware ofher hit single “Angel” whichhas been getting some airtime

lately, and is also the title ofher new album. She’s adopted alady-thug persona as evidencedby her music and appearanceon the album’s cover. The songs are mostly aboutrelationships and love, andpossess a certain hip-hopflavour, however someselections feature smooth R&Bharmonies. I enjoy the ‘Angel’track the most, perhapsbecause its familiar to me butalso because it was poignantlywritten about her cousin Mike, who was a major influence inher life, and who unfortunatelydied of heart-failure at the ageof 31. This album grows on you!

THE HIGHLIGHT for me of whatwas a great win for Fremantle wasSandilands’ goal. Normally, if yousee a giant purple people eaterpluck a ball from the sky, pauseto swat at the pesky humans whotried to use him as a ladder andthen turn to kick truly, you woulddouble-check your prescription –or start a new religion.

AT TIMES SO far this season, the Freo game plan hasresembled an unmade bed;the cover askew, the pillowseverywhere, little or no comfort.Sunday saw a saviour in theshape of Troy “Snakeman”Simmonds. He grabbed the gameby the scruff of the neck, shookit out and laid it flat – neat, clean, and, most importantly, straight. His centre square dominancemade our journey to goal so directit’s like he spent the pregamewarmup laying out string lines.
