    YOUR TRUSTED PARTNER IN EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION

    During the summer it is importantchildren keep up on their reading.This will help them maintain andimprove their reading level goinginto the next school next year.This will also help them tobecome a life long reader. During

    camp after lunch every day thecampers are given a choice ofdoing quiet activities and this is agreat time for the children to taketime to read a book. Pleasemake sure that there is one intheir bags for them to read.

    During our Alice in Wonderlandtheme day the childrenparticipated in activities inspiredby the story. One of the activitieswas to listen to a condensedversion of the book.A new section of the newsletterthat we would like to introduce isthe book review done by one ofthe children. This section givesthe campers an opportunity torecommend books to their fellow

    campers. If your child reads abook that they enjoy or if you reada book as a family that you wouldlike to recommend we encourageyou to let us know.

    We had a fantastic firstweek of camp. Thecampers enjoyed manyof the onsite activitieslike the Gold Rush,playing several differentsports, and art andscience projects. Duringone of our art activitieswe explored the paintingstyle of Jackson Pollack.He is known for hisdevelopment of what isnow called the "drip"technique. Beforestarting the process wetalked about how hedeveloped this style and different ways it it used.Once we had a better understanding of histechnique we got to go and experiment with our own

    techniques.Fourth grader Ashley B. said her favorite scienceproject was making slime. When asked to describethe experience she said, "I liked the slime we madeduring science because it was really slimey." Andwho could forget the Slip and Slide!

Adam Epstien andAndrew Jacobson do a great jobmaking sure that you can't stopreading this book. Anyone who isin third grade or higher shouldread The Familiars!

    Enrollment for the 2013-14 schoolyearis going on now. If you needenrollment forms please let usknow. If you are registering forthe morning program pleaseremember we need to have theforms turned in so we can letfamilies know if there will be aprogram.

    We are excited to have the opportunity to work withCoach Anna from Hot Shots again this summer.

    Coach Anna joins the campers at a workshop onFridays. During our time with Hot Shots the childrenplay many different games and work on soccer andbasketball skills units. In addition to Hot Shots, weare looking forward to starting our workshops withUrban Beat Dance Company and Mrs. Skozia, theart teacher at Avoca West Elementary School.
