A Message from the Superinten-dent

Everyone in Chinook’s Edge works extremely hard to main-tain the high standards of safety that has allowed our division to achieve COR (Certificate of Recognition) status for the last four years. Chinook’s Edge is one of a small handful of school divisions which has achieved COR status in Alberta, and we are recognized as a provincial leader in ensuring high expecta-tions for safety in all of our schools and departments.

This diligent attention to safety is practiced in every classroom, at every building and on every school ground in our division. Our staff members maintain a strictly itemized safety protocol, and each step plays an important part of this overall priority in Chinook’s Edge. We are pursu-

ing optimum safety because we care about the people in our facilities – our students, staff, parents, volunteers and guests – and this priority ensures every-one continues to thrive in our safe and caring schools.

As we enter the month of May there are some major things to be aware of. Over the next few weeks online registration for the 2016-2017 school year will take place and we will start to run schedules for next year through the computer. It is important that students sub-mit their requests to ensure that they have a better chance of securing the courses they need. Congratulations to Jansie Nel on being named the 2016 OHS valedictorian. Jansie has an average of 97% and we are proud of her academic accom-plishments. Congratulations also to Angie Dezall for being selected as an ‘Excellence in

Teaching’ semi-finalist. She will receive a special profes-sional development grant of $1500. Graduation will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016 and Saturday, May 28, 2016. The two events open to the public are the Cap and Gown Cere-mony on Friday night at 7 pm and the Program on Saturday at 7:30 pm. Graduation will be held in the gymnasium. Thanks for all of the support you provide.

Tom Christensen Principal

Vice Chair. I also want to say thank you to Deborah Wheeler for the support and reminders from the School Office to get the minutes and agendas posted and these newsletter submissions in on time! Doug, Gayleen, Kent and Tom - OHS is fortunate to have you. Our May meeting is my last meeting as Chairperson, and as such we are needing parents to come forward to fill the role of chairperson and, po-tentially, other executive roles with School Council. As the school year draws to a close and students are looking forward to their futures, whether the next grade or graduation, I am looking back at the years I have been part of the Olds High School Coun-cil. I want to take this opportunity to give my heartfelt thanks to those that came before me and those that have supported me as Chairperson these last two years. Deb Unger for your minute taking, Char Dagg for stepping in when Deb could-n’t be there and Lana Cissell, who has been invaluable as

person are: to act as a parent advisor to the Principal, draw up the meeting agenda, direct the meetings and send in newsletter submissions. Olds High School Council does not fundraise; there is no treasur-er. We would love to see the parents of our Grade 9 and 10 students come out to support School Council – our next meeting is May 30, 2016 at 7 p.m.

Olds High School Interact Club Fundraising Banquet

The 6th Annual Olds High School Interact banquet was held on March 10 and was again a huge success and your kind donation helped make it possible. With your help, OHS Interact students were able to raise just over $4500 toward their causes.

Our goal this year is to begin a four year commitment to a young woman in Malawi, Africa. We will sponsor a girl who is beginning her first form at the Atsikana Pa Ulendo School for Girls. We hope to be able to fundraise annually and support her as she progresses through to the end of her high school program. We are looking toward developing more communication and connections between this student and

our students at OHS. It will be an interesting and exciting journey for both our students and the students in Malawi.

Our second fundraising goal is to begin annual contributions to the GOWNS FOR GRADS program. This program will see new or gently used grad gowns available to grads at a significantly reduced rate. Funds raised from the sale of the gowns will also be used to subsidize costs of formal wear rental for male graduates who would benefit from some assistance.

Since its inception, the OHS Interact club have benefitted from the continued support and guidance of the Olds Rotary club. Each year, Olds Rotary have sponsored up to 6 students to attend leadership camps and each year they work hard to support the Interact student initiatives. One very exciting possibility that has opened for us through this relationship has been that the Rotarians generously offered to match our fundrais-ing dollars for the Malawi project. Students have been excited to see that, with community collaboration, we may be able to see our fundraising grow up to ten times! We have partnered with the Olds Rotary Cub who in turn are working with a Calgary West Rotary Club and the final donated amount will be taken toward the district level to be used in an application for 3:1 grant dollars. Basically, this means that our donation of $4500 has the potential to lead toward a much more sizable donation.

It has been excellent for the students to see the value of community partnerships and working together. The very generous donations from both individuals and local business of raffle table items, bake sale items and the support of the Rotarians have reaffirmed what a great community we are working and living in.

Thank you again for helping our club and being a part of this wonderful community we live in.
