SUMMERTIME BABY! WOOHOO! Summer has finally arrived and exhibitors are busy playing outside in amazing sunshine, filling in their project books from front to back, and helping out with household projects. Okay, maybe that’s a small stretch, but we hope that some of those things are happening in your homes!

This Hotline is packed with details and dates for tons of pre-fair and fair activities to help your family have a great summer in 4-H. There’s a lot going on and we often forget what a steep learning curve our 4-H culture requires of new families or even members taking new projects or participating in new 4-H activities. Let’s all go the extra mile to be mindful and welcoming since everyone does not have the same history and working knowledge of our 4-H family. Try to slow down meetings and offer extra details to help newbies stay up to speed.

In CARTEENS programs, 4-H teen leaders teach traffic education safety programs to first-time teen traffic offenders, while also building offenders’ self-esteem and interpersonal skills. Teen traffic offenders attending this program have typically been cited for speeding, stop sign violations, reckless operation, and other similar moving violations. CARTEENS program topics include excessive speed, driving under the influence, seat belt safety use, consequences of unsafe decisions, dealing with peer pressure, understanding traffic laws, and recognizing and reacting to traffic signs and signals. For CARTEENS 4-H club presentations contact Peggy Campbell at 740-649-5298. A $500 scholarship is awarded each year to a CARTEEN member.

If your members need to have their poultry tested, they can contact certified tester: Tracy Gibson at 740-804-2146.

MARKET HOG REGISTRATION LINK There has been confusion about the Market Hog Registration link. We basically are trying to get a head count to assign pens before fair. The survey will open on July 9 at 1 am and close on July 15 at 11:59 pm so you have some time to decide—do not register now. Exhibitors will need to log-in and let us know the QUANTITY instead of the tag # of the pigs they are bringing. If in doubt, guess high. The registration link is: https://go.osu.edu/2019MarketHogPens

LIVESTOCK GROOMING For all livestock—only exhibitors, immediate family members and advisors may assist with the shearing and/or grooming of any Jr. Fair animal once it comes onto the fairgrounds. Refer to General Livestock rule in the fairbook for specifics.

Pre-fair is the time for exhibitors to learn this great skill so they are prepared to groom their animals at the fair. Example: It is recommended to dip goats 10 days to 2 weeks ahead of fair and not at fair.

BEEF EXHIBITOR STALL REQUEST Participants wanting side-by-side stalls must have their request submitted to the Extension office by July 15. This includes anyone that wants to add a space for an open show entry or if you want to move your 4-H/FFA entries with open cattle. Once exhibitor’s stall tags have been placed there will not be any moving of tag assignments.

LIVESTOCK RE-TAGGING If a project animal loses a tag, please contact the Extension office IMMEDIATELY to get on the re-tag list. Have your member keep the old tags to be turned in.
