Greetings!I am a hopeless pack rat - collecting here and there and having a hard time getting rid of things. One of my collections consists of Shalimar by Guerlain perfume bottles. I have collected them since I started dating my husband--his mother loved the fragrance and selected it for Doug to give me as a gift. I have quite a collection. I love the fragrance and have gone through many bottles of it. The bottles are beautiful and I’ve never been able to throw them out. I have them displayed on a shelf in my bathroom and they look soooo cute!

You can imagine my delight when I opened a copy of one of my favorite country magazines recently (Country Living, Feb ‘09) and found an article on collecting perfume bottles and featuring photos of Shalimar. According to the article if I wanted to sell my collection I could make some pretty good money. Guess being a pack rat is not all bad! (And NO I won’t sell them - I’ll let my kids do that when I’m gone.)

Hope you enjoy your start to summer and can get out and visit the shops who support The Country Register as well as the many flea markets and other special events. It’s a great time to start or add to your own collections!

Lisa Schorr

Making art in any form has always been a foundation for Lisa. To quote her “I can't imagine life without creating art.” One of her favorite mediums to work with is watercolor. She enjoys painting from life and her country life affords many subjects right in her own front yard. Lisa loves to paint from experiences especially the ones the viewer can relate to, like the fireflies in the jar that brings back memories to a lot of folks.

Lisa paints pet portraits and home portraits from pictures provided by clients or photos she takes. When ever possible she likes to meet the pet to get a feel for their personality. She has been commissioned to paint childhood homes, new homes, old homes and a personal favorite for her are churches where a wedding has taken place and then it is presented as a gift. She also enjoys painting local historical venues.

Lisa’s art is available at several art festivals in central Ohio and at the Monarch Gallery in Lancaster, Ohio. A new series being introduced this art festival season is the "Rainy Days" series which are charming representational abstract people with colorful umbrellas in the rain.

Lisa has been teaching watercolor classes at the Monarch Gallery and The Decorative Arts Center in Lancaster. She derives much pleasure introducing both children and adults to watercolors.

To view more of Lisa’s artwork and see a schedule of the art festivals in which she will be participating, visit To purchase or commission some art or inquire about private or group beginning watercolor classes contact Lisa at or 740-746-9462

Sometimes you need to stop worrying about the future or the past

and enjoy the present!

Here is some very important information that I am passing on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following the simple advice I heard on a talk show, you too can find inner peace. The doctor on the show proclaimed, “The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never had the time to finished.” I thought about this for the longest time. I then looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn't found the time to finish. I decided that today was the day to change, so before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a 2-liter bottle of Mt. Dew, a bottle of some unknown alcoholic beverage, a package of Oreo's, a pound package of peanut M&M's, the rest of last night’s strawberry cheese- cake, some Doritos, and a box of chocolate truffles left over from Valentine's day. I really think that doctor knew what he was talking about because you have no idea how amazingly great I feel right now. I can't wait to see what I can finish tomorrow!

Not Just Mom Long ago I was visiting a friend from out-of-town, My friend needed to renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk 's office. While waiting in line I remember watching a woman ahead of us as she was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. “What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “Do you have a job or are you just a ...?” “Of course I have a job,” snapped the woman. “I'm a Mom.” “We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, ‘housewife' covers it,” said the recorder emphatically. I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, “Official Interrogator” or “Town Registrar.” “What is your occupation?” she probed. What made me say it? I do not know. The words simply popped out. “I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.” The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. “Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in your field?” Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careersAnd the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.” There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy and I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than “just another Mom.” Motherhood! What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door. Does this make grandmothers “Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations” and great-grandmothers “Executive Senior Research Associates?” I think so!!!

Dear Country Register Readers, Today the sun was shining, the spring birds were singing and the sweeper didn't look that appealing so off I went with my Country Register in hand to discover another special Ohio Country Register store that would really inspire the Secret Shopper. Ashland Ohio is where I traveled. I found one of the neatest hidden- away shops I have been to in a long time. Back Door Primitives in Ashland is the creation of three ladies who have taken a really unusual red painted building with big green old glass windows nestled down an alley between two downtown streets and made it into a wonderfully unique country shopping experience. Doesn't seem possible? Take it from me you will be pleasantly surprised and happy when you find this unique Ashland shop. When I visited I met Phyllis and her sweet dog Katie who is a rescue and who sleeps safely tucked behind the counter (Katie not Phyllis!) Phyllis and her two partners, Cindy and Christy, make many of the items themselves. They are really gifted and talented crafters. Punch needle, kits and projects, pretty wool and unusual yarn, a pinch of fabric, handmade dolls and patterns, small stools with hooked wool tops to hooked wool wall hangings. You will find them behind 125 W. Washington, between W. Washington and W. Walnut Streets right down an alley behind pretty old houses in the downtown area of Ashland. Watch for the sign on W. Washington and I want to let you know the directions in the Country Register were right on and very easy to follow. Absolutely put these ladies and their wonderful country antique and gift shop on your must see list and when you stop sign up for a class! It was so nice to see really well done beautiful handmade items by Ohio crafters that truly will lift your spirits and make you smile. Where shall I visit next time? Country Blessings,

?

I am Gonna be a Bear In this life I am a woman. In my next life, I'd like to come back as a bear. When you're a bear you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that. Before you hibernate you get to eat everything you see. I could also deal with that. When you're a girl bear you birth your children, who are the size of walnuts, while you're sleeping. When you awake they are partially grown, cute, cuddly little cubs. I could definitely deal with that. If you're a momma bear everyone knows you mean business. You swat at anyone who bothers your little cubs, and they listen to you. I could deal with that. If you're a bear your mate expects you to wake up growling. He expects that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat. Yes, I could definitely deal with that.

Sacred Threads is a biennial exhibition of over 200 quilts exploring the themes of joy, spirituality, inspiration, grief, healing and peace/ brotherhood. Entries to this juried exhibit come from all over the United States and Canada. The show was established in 2001 by a small group of volunteers to provide a safe venue for quilters of all faiths who see their work as an expression of their spiritual journey. An artist's statement is hung with each quilt allowing the artists to share their stories and to reach out to the viewers on a personal level. In 2005 the show was voted as one of the top ten art exhibits in Columbus by the Columbus Dispatch art critics.

The show is held at the high school in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and will be open daily from June 17-28, 2009. Admission is $5.00.

Additional information about the show and slideshows of quilts from our previous exhibits can be seen at our website www.sacredthreadsquilts.com.

Now is a wonderful time to be thinking about decorating your home!!! I am finding that more and more people are taking the plunge to change things up in their homes right now. With the economy where it is, people may not be buying a bigger home, but are looking for ways to enhance their current home. Everyone is looking for ways to make their home their sanctuary from the world around them. We are also looking at turning our homes into a place where our family friends will feel welcome and comfortable. So what are you waiting for? Let's talk about some ways that are very affordable to turn your home into your castle. Look at some colors that are a bit brighter and bring the sunshine in. Especially after the hard winter we have all had. Color can make a huge difference in your home. Also think about things that will inspire you as they brighten your day and may even bring a smile to your face. Something a little unexpected. A sign or wall hanging, throw pillows with embroidery, a cute little accent piece that only you and your family will understand. But will cause your friends to ask you “What is that all about?” Something that has special meaning to you will brighten your day and lift your spirit. While we are talking about things to decorate your home with, let's not forget about our sense of smell. Smells can often lift your spirits and create that atmosphere that you are looking for. It can be a romantic getaway, or a fun way to light up your space. Lanterns outside and in are making a huge statement right now. Fill them with great smelling candles and you will be amazed at what it does for your mood. And nothing is more welcoming than the smell of a candle that reminds someone of their favorite baked goods. If you would like some ideas for some fun products and some wonderful candle scents, please check out some of the wonderful shops in this issue of The Country Register and also visit my website for some more inspiration.

After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash

her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience

grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their

room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling

voice, "Who was THAT?"

Plant Seeds Now for Gourd

Birdhouses!Follow instructions on the back of a package of Bottle Gourd Seeds. They grow very well on a trellis with lots of water and sunlight.

Cure gourds by placing them on rack where air can circulate around them freely, being sure to turn them every day or so. You’ll know they’re dry when they turn brown and seeds rattle loosely inside. Be patient - it may take 3-6 months!

Paint with acrylic paint or leave natural. Attach a hanger and enjoy!

To make a birdhouse: wash gourd in soapy water to remove dirt and mold. Dry thoroughly. Cut a hole in the gourd’s side at least 1” in diameter. Remove seeds and any remaining pulp. Clean inside with soapy water.

Lovely Lavenderby Liz McIntyre

Lavender essential oil has long been known for its healing powers. It has been used throughout history as a natural antiseptic, an antibiotic, an anti-depressant, and a sedative. The oil is extracted from the lavender flower by steaming them. When this happens, the essence of the fragrant flower is released in the form of vapor. This vapor is then stored in tanks and left to cool. The cooled vapor is what forms the wonderful lavender essential oil.

Lavender continues to be used as a remedy for many health issues such as insomnia, headaches, anxiety, relief from pain, and some skin disorders. It is essential to note that pregnant and breast-feeding women should avoid using lavender essential oil, as well as people who suffer from diabetes.

Dried lavender can keep for years. To dry your own, take fresh bouquets (with about a third of the flowers opened) and gather into a bouquet about one inch in diameter. Secure with rubber bands and attach a paper clip for hanging. Hang upside down from a string in a well ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

Loose lavender is delightful for filling sachets. Just a bit of country cotton fabric, cut into an 8” circle, filled with lavender flowers, gather edges and secure with rubber band and a ribbon and you are ready to place in your bureaus and closets! Lavender is also a deterrent to moths?

You may also toss dried lavender on your carpet before vacuuming, or place a few drops of oil on a cotton ball and place the ball directly in your vacuum cleaner bag! Since lavender is known for its aid in inducing relaxation and sleep, it is a popular fragrance choice for the bedroom. Just a few drops of oil on your pillow can help you off to dream land.

And of course, after a day of gardening, nothing says relaxation more than a lavender bath. Just place a few drops of essential oil into the water and soak your cares away.

A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little

girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"

Tips for your Garden: • Put up a bird feeder and a bird house. • Never disturb a bird nest. Many birds will abandon the nest if the eggs or chicks have been disturbed.• In springtime, hang nesting materials in tree branches, bushes or near the birdfeeder.• String, wool, grasses or straw are all helpful to songbirds when they are constructing their nests.• Try not to use insecticides in your garden. These chemicals can poison birds if they eat contaminated seeds, berries or insects, or drink contaminated water.• Birds enjoy a birdbath. It is a ready source of water for drinking and dunking.• Most young birds have a period where they leave the nest, but can't quite fly yet. They may be on the ground for a day or so, hopping about and looking quite perplexed. Time to keep kitty indoors and just let the young ones alone.

The 3 P's of any interior makover: Plan, Purge and Paint.

The most important step is the Planning. Get all of your ideas in order. Create a floor plan to organize your space and to help you make decisions.

Purge what you don't use, what is broken and outdated. This will simplify your spaces and make the things left in the room become the feature.

Paint!! I can't say it enough. Paint is the BEST way to transform any space! Always use the best quality paints.

Primitive GatheringsMon-Sat 10-5

in Parkersburg, WVIf you have ever heard the saying "When life hands you Twigs, make a basket!" That saying holds more than true for my partner Becky and me.

October 5, 2008 is a day that we will never forget. It was a Sunday morning around 8:30 am. I wasn't feeling very well, so I decided to stay home from Sunday School and go to church service later. In my groggy state, I thought I was hearing the phone ring.........it didn't stop. So I reached for the handset and it was my good friend Carolyn on the other end. Her voice was stearn and I immediately knew something was not right. I asked, "Carolyn what is it?" She said, "I wish I didn't have to make this call, honey, but your shop is on fire." I leaped from the bed with hysteria and frantically called Becky. Driving to the shop as fast as we could get there, we were uncertain as to how bad or what to expect. As we turned the corner and saw the smoking ashes from the backside, our hearts dropped to our stomach. I immediately broke out in tears.

We had just moved into this beautiful two-story old house and was ready for our Fall Gathering, ready to open the next day. We had worked all week late into the evenings and as we left that Friday evening, we were looking back on the first day we opened our shop a year and half ago and what a long road we traveled to get where we were.

Now, it was all gone! Our hard work, literally up in smoke. As the day went on, I sat there in the middle of the parking lot, feeling like I had not one breath left in me. The fire dept was in and out, investigators wanting statements, by-standers wanting to know if we were ok. Is this real?

Indeed it was, as we collected ourselves and was able to walk around the outside and discover the melted siding, we found the strength to ask the fire captain just what had happened. "Was it electrical?", Becky asked. He answered, "No, we have ruled that out". Becky and I looked at each other in astonishment. That could only mean one thing, someone deliberately did this!? The next morning it was confirmed. It was arson. Someone did intentionally set fire. It was heart-breaking enough to withstand having seen our shop go up in flames but we felt violated when we found out someone did this on purpose. Where do we go from now? How do we start all over......... or do we?

With the help and support of family and friends, we were encouraged and motivated to get back up and start again. The renovations quickly started and after a few short months, we were able to re-open. February 4th we opened the doors to the new Twigs -n- Thyme.

As you enter the shop, we wanted you to feel as if you stepped back in thyme. Remembering those days at gramma's house, where the aroma of her baking biscuits for our chicken and noodle dinner and big ole' sugar cookies served warm with milk for dessert. The scents and sounds will take you back in thyme as you enter each room from the Buttr'y to the Gathering Room.

You will discover, primitives, handsewns, dried goods, and unique OOAKs. We also, have personalized stitcheries for those special occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, etc. available in frame or pillow. We offer free gift bags for gift-giving.

We are located at 3003 Murdoch Ave, Parkersburg, WV. Our primitive gatherings are Monday thru Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Stop by and check us out, we would love to visit a while.

And remember, if you are handed a twig (in some cases, a tree trunk!) always make a basket and it fill it to the rim with prim!

Editor’s Note: Yes they did arrest the guy, apparently he had set some other fires in the area. Congratulations on the rebuild, Tammy & Becky!
