Do you make resolutions every year? Do you keep them? I dont either!

Instead I have decided to make some lifestyle changes this year -namely, to get up and move more, and to learn some new things. Im stillworking on the moving more one, but I have taken a couple of classesrecently. One at a wonderful garden center on tablescaping whichfeatured mostly fall decorations. I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It wasvery well organized and most informative. I have used many of the tipsthey offered. The other class I took was in a department store where theymainly directed us through their Christmas displays and featured their

merchandise. I walked away with some great ideas for my Christmasdecorating.

So both were beneficial, but I would advise you to get details when yousign up so you know what to expect. Be sure to ask if they allowparticipants to take photos. Its fun to use your pictures as a guide whenyou get home and try to implement some of the ideas.

We recently welcomed a new grandson to our family! Lukas surprised hisparents Ryan & Brandi by arriving ten weeks early. He stayed atChildrens Hospital in Columbus for nine weeks and finally came home inmid-December! He was pretty quiet at this years Christmas get-together,but were already looking forward to the years ahead of us with a new littleone around. Im sure hell try to keep up with his cousins Zack & Lexinext year!

We are very aware of how blessed we are and wish you a wonderful andblessed 2009!

Jody's creative work began aschildhood play. A favorite past timeof collecting acorns, which hadfallen from the oak trees in her neighborhood, provided entirecommunities of Acorn People.Faces were scratched into thesurface with a straight pin from her Mom's pincushion. Toothpicksconnected acorn heads to acorn

bodies. More toothpicks becamearms and legs. Happy 1950's AcornFamilies with big pin-drawn smileswere created.I lived in my own little world alot, Jody remembers. I wasalways busy making something. Iloved using my Mom's treadle sewing machine and making dollclothes from scraps of fabric that were saved from the clothes my Mommade for my two sisters and me. I must have been about 6 years oldwhen I started sewing because I remember having to stand to use thetreadle machine to make my original creations.

Formalizing her business in 1982, Jody Houghton Designs, Inc. has been her profession for over 27 years. With a business motto of Creating a Life, While Creating a Living, Jody successfully built ahome-based business from her designs as gift products while raisingher two children as a single parent.

Jody's cover art design shows a sampling of her newest work. Twelvefabric designs, including a 30 mini-panel collection of 14 pieces of artwork are presented for the Sisterhood of Quilters. The fabric is inlocal quilt shops this month and is manufactured by NorthcottSilk/Lyndhurst Studios. The Sisterhood is founded by Jody'scharacters, Faith, Hope, and Charity. It is a self-appointed membershipfor all who love working with their hands and sharing their time andtalent. Visit for more details and to seethe entire collection.

All around our area you will find towns that are home to independent businesses or restaurants. We are the places you go when you want tofeel at home. We are also the places that shape your definition of your community. Where you will find the owner most days, where peopleknow your name and are genuinely glad to see you. We are the placesthat make your town special to you and to the outside world. Asconsumers, you have the power to shape your city, town, or village.

Every time you open your wallets to a business you are saying, Ilike what you do! Keep doing it. When you shop local, you are sayingYES to a strong, vibrant local economy that translates into a uniqueand interesting city. You are making sure that you have diversity andchoices of products and services. The more businesses...the morechoices. Independent businesses can carry more specialized lines or new products, or support local artisans.

You are helping us support local causes such as schools, churchesand charities. Like us you are seeing that there is more then monitoryvalue to your purchases, there is community value. Ask someone toname their favorite shop or cafe and chances are it's an independent

business. Yet we often forget these local places rely on your patronageto survive. Our town is not just a target market to us-it is our home, andwe have a personal vested interest in the long-term health of our community.

Where will your town be if these places were not here? Of course lifewould go on. You would find other places to get the things you used toenjoy right in your own back yard. You would sit around andremember the little shop or cafe you used to enjoy so much and saywhat a shame it is that they closed. Our area downtowns have madehuge strides over the years to become a special place to those who liveand visit here. In our current economic condition we are at risk of losing them. We need you to be here for us so that we can be here for you in the future. If you didn't already know it, your local independent

businesses think you are special and realize the value you bring to us.We want to be there for you and our community.Written by Leslie Reilly, owner of The Primitive Heart in De Pere,Wisconsin.

Window Coverings Save You Energyand Keep You Warm

    by Julie Fergus

Window Coverings Save You Energyand Keep You Warm

    by Julie Fergus

Rising energy costs are affecting everyone's budget. According to the U.S.Department of Energy, heat lost through windows can account for 10 to25% of your heating bill, andeven new energy efficientwindows allow heat loss. If you've not had an energy auditon your home yet, a simpleway to check for heat loss isto simply put your hand onthe window sill and see if youfeel cold air. Even a smalldraft means a big heat lossThere is also directconduction through the glass, which make rooms colder when left exposed.

Todays technology providesus with a huge selection of insulating window treatments, from honeycomb shades todecorative blinds anddraperies. These newtreatments prevent heat lossand provide insulation to keepyour home warm in winter and cool in summer, as well as beautifying thedecor in the room. Additionally, window coverings control light and provide

    privacy.

Window shade products have R-value (resistance value) ratings whichmeasure a product's resistance to heat loss when in a closed (lowered) position. Window coverings with a high R-value can provide much neededinsulation and significantly reduce heat loss. The higher the R-value, themore insulation a window product provides. A single layer of uncoveredwindow glass has a winter R-value of about 0.88, while a double-glazedwindow has a value of about 1.75. By selecting an energy-efficient windowtreatment, you can help increase the R-value one to five points.

Combining shades and draperies will increase the insulating value. It isimportant to install shades and draperies properly to minimize gaps thatwould allow air to filter through.

Pieces From My Heartby Jan Keller

    Surprises

Pieces From My Heartby Jan Keller

SurprisesCongratulations on your 40th Anniversary, said a total stranger as I

got off the monorail at one of its regular stops in Florida's DisneyWorld. Dumfounded by the SURPRISE greeting, I hurried to catch upwith the lady and asked, How did you know? As a smile spreadacross her face, I heard, Your daughter-in-law told me. She was r ight

by me during the transit. Then she continued, saying, Forty years issomething to celebrate and how nice you're here with your entirefamily!

That woman was so right especially about being able to celebrate insunny Florida with our children and grandchildren. The warmer climate in the midst of a Colorado winter certainly was a welcomereprieve. Today it's snowing outside my window and Florida soundsvery enticing, indeed!

One evening at Disney's Coral Reef restaurant featuring table-sidedining in EPCOT, we enjoyed watching thousands of fish, giantturtles, and other aquatic creatures. In addition to being mesmerized

by the aquarium, I couldn't help but notice the vast majority of therestaurant's staff are senior citizens. What a SURPRISE!

Typically, at most amusement parks, almost everyone on staff is ayounger whippersnapper. Curious, I asked our server, Why so manyof the park's workers seniors? Benefits, she replied. Many of theDisney workers have been with the company since Disney Worldopened in 1971. They enjoy their work and don't want to give up thegreat benefits.

Our twin grandsons, Gabe and Garrett are nine. Their cousin Austinis six. Sometimes three can be a crowd and an invitation todisagreement. My husband John and I still marvel at how well the

boys got along and really had a good time being together. TheSURPRISE to us was the way the three would hold hands as theywalked (and sometimes skipped) hither, thither, and yon to get fromone Disney attraction to the next.

Morgan and Reagan, our four-year-old twin princess-lovinggranddaughters are girly-girls. Frequent sightings of Cinderella,Jasmine, Tinkerbell, and Sleeping Beauty, were exciting events. As themother of only male offspring, I don't know much about all the funhair paraphernalia that's available for little girls. Did you know there'sa vast array of hair adornments besides rubber bands and barrettes? One evening as our group was heading back to our rooms, becausenobody was waiting in line, the decision was made for the girls to get'hair wraps.' They each got to choose four different colors of string(similar to embroidery floss) that was somehow wrapped around andaround and around a tiny lock of hair then finished with severalcolorful beads. The cost didn't seem too bad, just $2 per inch.Somehow in the process, however, the girls' hair magically grew (after all, we're in the Magic Kingdom). SURPRISE! Their tiny littlewrapped locks stretched to unbelievable lengths. I thought they gothair extensions instead of wraps!

After five days at Disneyworld, we moved our entourage to Disney'sVero Beach Resort, where we stayed in a 3-bedroom cottage just stepsaway from the Atlantic. Although I've been to one ocean or another several times, the sound of the crashing waves was a big SURPRISE!

Yes, this trip was very special and enjoyed by everyone. But the biggest SURPRISE came one year earlier when our sons and their families told John and me they were giving us this wonderful trip asour anniversary gift. Nothing can compare with the lasting happymemories of time spent with family!

    (from page 12)

The hit movie, Thelma and Louise had just won major awards in Hollywood, the year thatmy girlfriend Doreen and I spontaneously hit the road. We pretended that my little silver car was a convertible and that we were leaving our troubled lives behind for a couple of days. Perhaps we would meet Brad Pitt at the gas station, or we would be discovered bya producer and be lifted into the glamour of Hollywood. Or not. We were just happy tohave a couple of days to hang out.

We didn't have a particular destination in mind, but we knew that when we reachedDuluth Minnesota, we'd have to make a decision. Turn left? Through Marquette to theSault and back around Lake Superior to home base in Thunder Bay? Turn right? Fargo

North Dakota seemed like an interesting locale. Turn North? We could easily chug our way to Winnipeg Manitoba and go shopping. Mexico was out of the question.Somewhere en route, we started calling each other Thelma and Louise.

At the time, my life was a little like Louise's. Strong and invincible, at least on theoutside. Divorced. No money. No fun. Didn't own a gun. Thelma? Organized. Passive.Unhappy at home, and considering a leap into singledom. We needed a break.

The plan for this first trip sounded like this. Do you have any money? No. Have yougot some change lying around the house? Yes. What do you have in the fridge thatcould become a buffet picnic? How about the pantry?

Our first stop was a gourmet extravaganza. I remember shrimp on crackers, cheese andgrapes. The view of the rocky cliffs on the North Shore, waves crashing, sun shining wasamazing. The air so very fresh. Thelma and Louise were having a good time. We'dspent two hours on the road!

Our destiny on that first getaway was decided by a search for Margarita's. In Thelma andLouise's cavalier style, we stopped when we wanted to, drove off the main highway andexplored the back roads of Wisconsin and Michigan. We didn't bother with make up. Wesplit meals, found coupons and deals. We walked beaches, picked up rocks to paint andhunks of driftwood. Best of all, we laughed.

Over the years we've stayed in some really bizarre hotels, like the High Chapparel inCairns Australia. We learned that a penthouse is defined as the top floor of a building, notthe luxury suite as we had assumed in our North American minds. We discovered thatswimming is the perfect antidote to a long day's drive, but now know to ask if there iswater in the pool, especially if the motel's name is cute, like Bambi's. We've stayed in

places with slanted floors, rooms that are highly discounted because the package includesfree entertainment until 1 am, drifting upstairs from the bar below. We've grown to lovedark brown paneled walls, orange shag rugs, and glamorous views of mall parking lots.We find picnic tables in interesting road side spots, always with a white lace tablecloth:my mother's addition to the plan.

A few years ago, I cleaned out my closet just before we left. I packed all of my oldclothes and left them behind in hotel rooms and donation bins. The floral stuff from theeighties, some of the favourite outfits I'd been clinging to, were hilarious to wear, especially when some old geezer made a pass while we were shopping at Target. Nomore shoulder pads for Louise, but lots of laughs for Thelma when she watched me getdressed in the morning.

You see, this isn't just about a girlfriend getaway, or a New Year's Resolution to spendmore time with your pals. Our lives seem to be so crammed with agenda items all year long. We make appointments for a casual lunch months in advance. Our phoneconversations are broken up by a beep - call waiting, and our lives are interruptedconstantly by the demands of technology. When do we really, really relax and get awayfrom it all?

Thelma and Louise know that they can count on each other to find a few days in thesummer together. That plan may be hatched in the dead of winter, but the rules onlyapply to finding a weekend that's open for both of us. Other than that, as Thelma wouldsay, we only need a small overnight bag with old clothes to discard somewhere, atoothbrush and comb, spare change to buy breakfast, perhaps a map just in case and acredit card. We never have met Brad Pitt, and we really don't care. She's Thelma, I'mLouise and that's the way the story will continue to be written.

Another Year - Another DietTwas the month after Christmas and all through the house, nothingwould fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies Id nibbled, the eggnog Id taste, at the holiday partieshad gone to my waist. When I got on the scales there arose such anumber! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber). Idremember the marvelous meals Id prepared; the gravies and saucesand beef nicely rared, the wine and the rum balls, the bread and the

cheese and the way Id never said, No thank you, please. As I dressed myself in my husbands old shirt and prepared onceagain to do battle with the dirt, I said to myself, as I only can Youcant spend a winter disguised as a man!So away with the last of the sour cream dip, get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip, every last bit of food that I like must bebanished till all the additional ounces have banished. I wont havea cookie - not even a lick. Ill want only to chew on a long celerystick. I wont have hot biscuits, or corn bread or pie. Ill munch on acarrot and quietly cry - Im hungry, Im lonesome and life is a bore, but isnt that what January is for?Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all and to all agood diet!

Its not easy to part with items that have sentimentalormonetaryvalue. But if you only wear a fraction of theclothing in your closet, getting rid of the excess will help yourediscover classic items and determine what additions couldtake your wardrobe to the next level. Start by only pulling outitems youre sure you wont wear again. Then, turn all thehangers in your closet so theyre facing in the same direction.Every time you wear an item, flip its hanger the other way. Gotitems you always say youll wear again someday? Make aneffort to actually do so, and see if they still suit you. Resolve toremove any items that havent been worn by next New Years(those whose hangers remain un-flipped), and either donatethem to charity, or in the case of expensive items, bring them toa consignment or post them for sale online. Youll find thathaving extra space in your closet encourages you to mix-and-match more, creating outfits that look brand new.

My friend, fellow painter, and mentor, Eileen O'Sullivan, started her watercolor career at age 60. She had no formal art training and noexperience in the arts. She just had a burning interest in creating. Shetook classes, joined a watercolor society to be in the company of artists, set up a studio in her kitchen and painted daily. Ten years later, she isselling her vibrant landscapes and enjoying the recognition of beingaccepted in juried art shows. Eileen is a role model for me. Sheexemplifies the concept of it's never too late to do what you love.O'Sullivan flies in the face of another American phenomenon admirationfor boy wonders. Our relatively young country loves youthful vigor and start-ups and rookies. We adore instant success like the AmericanIdol who seemingly comes out of nowhere and confirms the myth of genius springing forth untutored.

Many famous artists have followed a pattern of precocity. Picasso'sgreatest works came early; Orson Wells peaked as a director at twenty-five; Mozart wrote his Piano Concerto No. 9 at the age of twenty-one.Yet just as many artists don't conform to that pattern. They do their bestwork later in life. Mark Twain published Adventures of Huckleberry

Finn at forty-nine; Alfred Hitchcock directed his most famous films(Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Psycho, and more) between hisfifty-fourth and sixty-first birthdays. The paintings that Cezanne createdin his mid-sixties were valued fifteen times as highly as those he createdas a young man. Amazingly, forty-two per cent of Frost's anthologized

poems were written after the age of fifty. Many of these artists had successful careers in their earlier decades. But

they really began to bloom after years of working at their crafts. For instance, Norman Maclean was an admired professor at the University of Chicago before his first book was published when he was 74. Hisfictional A River Runs Through It was made into a movie thatresonates with audiences. Other examples are Eileen O'Sullivan who wasa high producing travel agent. I was a middle school principal before

beginning my career as a Life Coach at fifty-five. My friend, BonniePrice, started two businesses since she entered her fifth decade.

Malcolm Gladwell, in a recent New Yorker article, terms these artistsand people like O'Sullivan, Price, (and me!), Late Bloomers. He tellsus that there is a common misconception about artistic success. We

believe (falsely, it turns out) that genius shows up early in life. So if wehaven't been wildly successful with our young attempts at writing,

painting, etc., we think we just don't have it in us.Actually, we do have it in us: to start a business, write a novel, paint a

masterpiece, or create like it's going out of style. What we need to growour creativity in our later years is different from what the precociousgenius needs. We need someone who believes in us; a mentor, friend, or spouse. We need learning experiences. We need time for practice anddiscovery. We need to have a mind set of searching that honors our

process more than producing a perfect product. Most of all, we need tonot be judged a failure too soon.

So, proudly take on the title of Late Bloomer. Do what you love or what calls to you, regardless of your age. And keep at it. Truly, it is never too late!

Mary Lou Johns is a certified Life Coach. She works with creative peopleto build their business, unblock their genius, and experience work/leisurebalance. She expresses creatively through watercolor, knitting, and writing. She can be reached at: [email protected]

Do you remember reading the passage in Lewis Carroll's Alice InWonderland & Through The Looking Glass when Alice came acrossthe Cheshire Cat sitting in the tree? (I only ask because during a recentlecture to high school students, I was asked if this had been releasedon video yet.) Briefly, during Alice's conversation with the Cat, sheasked:

And so it seems, all too often, that this attitude is the basis for planning our investment strategies. Investors know when they want to

retire. They also know they need to develop a financial strategy. Iteven goes without saying that most people know the importance of securing their financial independence because they generally won't beable to depend on government services. But why is it that investorsdon't know where they are going to achieve their financial security? Itreally is as if the passage is true that if you only walk long enough . .. you will eventually get somewhere!

I truly believe that the average investor's ultimate goal can generally be expressed as wanting to maintain their current lifestyle, in goodhealth, without becoming a burden to their family or friends whilethey enjoy their Golden Years. But without a proper road map, thoseGolden Years may be spent at the Golden Arches.

By deciding your financial path early, you can calmly navigatethrough any short-term obstacles. These obstacles may include: a

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go fromhere? That depends a good deal on where you want to get to, said the Cat. I dont much care where--: said Alice. Then it doesnt matter which way you go said the Cat, --so long as I get somewhere Alice added as an explanation. Oh, youre sure to dothat, if you only walk long enough said the Cat.

variety of geopolitical issues, the uncertainty of a Presidential election, the prolonged overseas military action, or the FED's intent to make adjustmentsinterest rates. But with having an existing course-of-action, these issues can

be addressed in advance and their degree of impact lessened through logicalevaluation rather than emotional reaction.

For example, let's assume that you want to retire in 15 years. Does it makesense to adjust your investment strategy based on the current Presidentialelection results? Especially when you consider that you will probably see twomore elections before you retire? Without a sense of direction (a plan), youcould easily make numerous decisions that may ultimately decide whether your retirement date is actually in 15 years --- or whether it has to beextended to 20 years to recover from some bad short-term choices.

Bottom Line: The moral of this story is really very simple --- without a plan

you will eventually get somewhere, but will it be the place you originally hadin mind? Plan today, for tomorrow is coming soon enough. And as we allknow, procrastination is the #1 reason why people fail in retirement planning(but that's another story).

We The Peopleby Maranda K. Jones

The most interesting election of my lifetime is already part of historynow that our new president has officially taken the oath of office. It istime to reflect on our rights as Americansand as artisans. An artisan is

a skilled manual worker who crafts items that may be functional or decorative, including furniture, clothing, jewelry, household items, andfood products. In other words, an artisan is someone who is braveenough to take on endeavors others deem impossible. Each and everyone of us deserves the title of artisan and the rights literally interpreted

just for crafty citizens. The First Amendment outlines our freedom of religion, of speech, and

to assemble. This right allows us to pray our projects will turn out right, embroider any fitting phrase on a pillow or tapestry, and to put together ready-made, store-bought kits when we want that homemade appeal buttime is of the essence.

The right to keep and bear arms is one of utmost importance to artisans, for weapons of mass construction, such as staple guns and glue guns arealways near at hand. The right to bare arms is an entirely differentsubject, one which my underdeveloped triceps may not deserve. My

sister lovingly calls it my teacher arm while demonstrating the flabswinging back and forth in opposite direction of my hand erasing thechalkboard.

Searches and seizures happen every time I begin a new project.Searches for the supplies I need that have mysteriouslydisappearedand seizures from excitement when the items are found onthe first try exactly where I thought I had placed them. With due processI will be better organized and stop this self-incrimination.

Most artisans harshly judge their own work and are their own worst critics, but someexercise their right to trial by jury. Judged or

juried shows promote and encourageexcellence in art and the appreciation of finecraftsmanship. Besides our county fair, I havenot entered any such competitions, but admirethose who do.

My husband will judge any baking I do witha limited range of remarks. Tastes good,Maranda is a high approval rating, where as

What's in this? tips the scale the other way. Unless it involves power tools, my husband considers any involvement in any other project crueland unusual punishment and reminds me the 13th Amendment abolishedslavery in 1865.

Art, like suffrage, does not discriminate by race, gender, or age, and isevery American's privilege and responsibility to create or appreciate. Artexists in every country's history, every family's heritage, and every

individual. Understanding the power of the freedom of expression, artisans, we the people, work to protect these rights and accept theresponsibility of preserving our country's legacy.

Shiny, healthy hair makes yourentire look seem more polishedandif yours doesn't happen to be lookingthat way at the moment, dontworry: There's an easy way to fakeit. Just call your salon and book anappointment for a glaze, a semi-permanent treatment that uses

ingredients like silicone to smooth and shine each strand, without weighing hair down like shine-enhancing serumsand sprays can. Or, to achieve a similar effect for lessmoney, try one of the new at-home glossing treatments. These products are also designed to help enhance yourhair color (especially helpful between dye sessions) andseal up hair's dry tips to minimize the appearance of splitends between haircuts.
