PERFORMING ENSEMBLES Kent State University at Stark offers all students diverse opportunities for music performance experiences. Performing ensembles are credit courses, open for membership to students by audition. According to degree requirements, music majors must participate for credit in a large performing ensemble each semester. CAREER OPPORTUNITIESAlumni are successful as live sound audio and recording engineers, performers, producers, composers, conductors and music educators. Others have chosen careers in instrument retailing, instrument repair, music licensing and studio teaching.

APPLIED MUSIC COURSESApplied music and applied studio musicianship courses are individualized music classes in which students, working one-on-one with their instructors, concentrate on the development of performance skills on a particular musical instrument or voice. Students must audition for approval to register for applied music courses.

Applied music courses include instruction on the following: » All brass instruments » All woodwind instruments » Classical guitar » Electric bass » Electric guitar » Percussion including drumset » Piano and keyboard » String bass » Popular voice » Classical voice» Violin, viola and cello available only at Kent Campus

ACCREDITATIONThe Kent State Stark Music Department, as part of the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music, is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Kent State University at Stark offers programs leading to undergraduate degrees for students who seek a high level of professional competence in music technology, instrumental and vocal music performance and music education.

An audition and theory placement test is required before admission to all programs. The Bachelor of Science in Music Technology and the Bachelor of Arts with concentration in Contemporary Popular Music must be completed at the Stark Campus. Students may complete approximately two years of courses toward the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music in Music Education at the Stark Campus before transitioning to Kent Campus.

BACHELOR OF ARTSBachelor of Arts majors have an opportunity to study music and liberal arts with an optional minor, available in most academic areas of the university, or as a dual degree program with a major in another field. This degree includes study on a main instrument and ensemble participation throughout the program.

BACHELOR OF ARTS WITH CONCENTRATION IN CONTEMPORARY POPULAR MUSICThis program, only offered at Kent State Stark, focuses on contemporary popular music knowledge and performance skill.

BACHELOR OF MUSICThe Bachelor of Music degree program provides specialized, intensive preparation in music. Those interested in a performing career or in teaching applied music, theory, music history or literature are specifically advised to complete this program.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN MUSIC EDUCATIONThe curriculum for music education prepares students for licensure to teach music in grades preK - 12 in public and private schools.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MUSIC TECHNOLOGY Kent State University at Stark offers a complete four-year curriculum in music technology leading to the Bachelor of Science in Music Technology degree. The degree is only offered at Kent State University’s Stark Campus.

Students concentrate on courses in music production and audio recording, using state-of-the-art technology. Students work in two music computer production labs and two recording labs on campus, as well as at Kopperhead recording and music services in nearby North Canton. The development of musicianship knowledge and skills in traditional and popular styles are also an important component of the curriculum. The study of music theory and music history, including world music, provides a well-rounded education that prepares graduates for successful careers.
