MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
I've often talked about what makes a club like Old Hickory. The people, the facili-
ties, and the commitment of our members contribute to the atmosphere and fellow-
ship we enjoy.
Old Hickory Gun Club is a non-profit club founded by members for members. The
articles of incorporation state clearly that Old Hickory is a facility founded to pro-
vide a place for our members to enjoy the shooting sports and to socialize with like-
minded individuals. As such, Old Hickory does not have a paid staff to work the
counter, stock the houses, or to maintain the equipment and facility. The items sold
at the counter are sold as a convenience to our members. Prices are set to cover pur-
chase costs and to help defray operational costs for the facility.
You've probably noticed some of the improvements made at the club in the past
couple years. In spite of the cost of insurance, taxes, utilities, and maintenance we
have been able to hold usage fees and prices down. There aren't many facilities that
provide as much to their members at such a minimal cost. Active participation by
volunteers at the club will assure more improvements to come in the near future.
One area that your club especially needs help is in staffing the operations. Currently
the Board of Directors shoulders the largest portion of the load. In a given month
there are roughly 40 shifts that must be covered. This includes maintaining a Range
Officer at the rifle range and a counter attendant at the club house, not to mention
loading targets in the houses, receiving inventory, hauling trash, and the other
things necessary to keep the club usable and presentable. These requirement and
tasks are accomplished because of committed Board members and others willing to
sacrifice their own time so that all members can enjoy the club but, we can always
use more help. My hearty thanks goes out to all those who work to keep our club
successful. One need not be on the Board of Directors to volunteer for duty at the
counter or to take care of the other numerous tasks required for the operation.
This November is election time for the Old Hickory Board of Directors. There are
several Directors stepping down from the Board at the end of the year. This is going
to leave a large hole in the Board that will need to be filled. Now is an ideal time to
step forward and help out. We are looking for members ready to serve. Candidates
for the Board of Directors must be willing and able to work the counter and/or
range, load houses, and take care of the various day to day requirements at the club.
Candidates must be committed to a policy of fiscal responsibility and a commitment
to maintain the friendly and open atmosphere at the club while weighing impacts to
each shooting discipline.
Volunteering as a candidate for the Board is not a decision to be taken lightly nor
does it assure automatic election to the board. All candidates for the Board of Direc-
tors must complete the selection process and be approved by the Nominating Com-
mittee before being listed on the November ballot.
If you would like to do more for your club please email me at [email protected] or catch up with me at the club.

The “ Father Time Memorial Shootout” was held at Old Hickory on
May 1st - 3rd. The weekend honored the following cowboys who
were all lifetime members of the Old Hickory Regulators. Three
Finger Will (William Fountain), Tatonka (Archie Lambert),
Tensleep (Joe Billy Cole), Mustang Don (Don Phillips), Oso Loco
(Willis Palmer, Father Time (John Clark), Miz Annie (Laura Cole)
and Silver Spur Shooter (Stephen Strapec).
This year’s shoot was the sixth annual and had an excellent turn-
out. There were 55 cowboys and cowgirls that showed up toting
their western regalia, authentic firearms and cowboy spirit. In
spite of a gully washer on Friday the weathered turned warm for
the next two days and there was plenty of lead and gun smoke in
the air.
When it all cleared the Top Cowboy was Doc Pill Filler
and the Top Cowgirl was Renegade Roper.

Successful Hunt By Bill Rose
I woke at 3am in a wall tent, in the mountains of Wyoming....don't you just like the way that sounds! It was Sept 15, 2014. I had been prepar-ing for this trip for well over a year. Dressing by propane light, and woofing down breakfast, had us on horseback and on the trail by 4am. Clear and cool, countless stars in the sky. As we rode up the mountain in the dark, you could see across the valley. The campfires of hunters, who had packed in the night before, flick-ered on the mountainside. I will never forget opening day of mule deer season in the public lands of Wyoming. My group was Howard Smith, his son Kevin, and nephew Greg Viver-ette, and me, Bill. We had pulled our hotel/trailer with us as we drove cross-country to Jackson Hole Wyoming for a 5 day mule deer and 2 day antelope hunt with Trophy Mountain Outfitters run by Mr. Dustin Child. We met the outfitters at the trailhead and horsebacked into the mountains. At camp, TMO prepared a great dinner for us and we headed off to bed early, with great anticipation of what was ahead. Tomorrow would be our first hunt. The plan was for me to take first shot. As luck would have it, we met a shooter mule deer coming down the mountain by a line of trees. A 25 yard shot. He surprised us and we spooked him. He was gone....down the mountain. The first day was over. Day 2 was better and Howard took a nice mule deer right before dark. Howard, his son Kevin and the guide did not make it back to camp until 11pm. Learning to clean and cape a mule deer, while watching for bears, takes a while. Day 3 was uneventful, except for my horse Nemo unexpectedly jumping a log on the trail. Day 4 was tremendous. Greg took his mule deer at 7AM. Then Kevin tagged a nice one lying on his back. The shot was over 300 yds. with a 7mm Rem Mag. Kevin “claims” it was a lucky shot! Continued page 10
Bill Rose spent hours at the OHGC Rifle Range....one could see confidence grow....both in himself and his equipment. Bill was introduced to basic accurizing techniques and external ballistics. He got the benefit of BIG game hunting experience from Ralph Zampella (aka Bawana). One of the great things about our rifle range is the depth of knowledge in the many experienced shooters and hunters. Hank learns from Frank, Frank shows Eddie, Eddie passes it on to Joe....and so it goes....This will not be Bill's last big, big game hunting trip.

Ticket sales for the Remington Shotgun are going well; however. Wayne Rhodes still needs your help to sell as many as possible. The gun drawing will be August, 2015 at the NC Open Skeet Tournament held at OHGC. Any shooter 22 years old or younger that is a full time student may be eligible to receive available funds for tournament shooting.
Ron Langley Shoots
100 Straight
On Friday May 29th Ron Langley shot his first 100
straight. He was clearly in the “zone.” He crushed
every one! He was shooting with his son, Mike,
George DeSanto and Bud Tremblay. L to R. George,
Bud, Ron and Mike.
Continued from page 9
Day 5 had me out alone while the others lay around camp. I was going to put to use all the hard work at Old Hickory Gun Club Rifle Range. My guide and I spotted a nice deer at the top of the mountain. I huffed and puffed up the mountain trying to get in range for a clear shot. With the deer about to disappear over the ridge, I made a hurried shot at 300 yards. Oh well....what was it they told me about shooting 30 de-grees uphill.....ahhh, that is what my ballistics card is for! We had one last chance in the next valley. But it was the same scenario. Deer kept disappearing and we kept chasing. Finally Nate, the guide, looked at me and said it’s over. We will never get close enough to see him before dark. You have come a long way riding horses on mountain ledges. It is thousands of feet down. We're going back. Day 6 the fun day! Antelope hunting on the plains of Wyoming. They were everywhere as we rode with Dustin Child, the outfitter, and his 2 kids. Little cowboys and great antelope hunters. We spotted and stalked the antelope in tall grass. Everyone “tagged out” on Antelope. We did not hunt day 7, which was great. After a week, we wanted a shave and a shower more than a hunt, so we headed back to Jackson Hole and civilization. I would highly recommend a hunt with Trophy Mountain Outfitters. They are a class act and can be found at www.trophymountainoutfitters.com. Our plans are to return in 2017 for an Elk hunt. You need to plan ahead as they stay booked with returning customers. A special thanks to Charles McCoy and Ralph Zampella for keeping a safe range and finding time to help. Look out 2017, we are already setting up the new Browning X bolt!
