JOURNAL DINNER MARCH 10, 2012
MESSAGE FROM RABBI EBBIN Dear Friends, It is a great honor for me to be a part of the forty-ninth annual Congregation Ohav Sholom Journal Dinner as we pay tribute to Amy and Peter Tannenbaum. The last Mishna in the second Chapter of Pirkei Avot states
Lo Alecha Hamlacha Ligmor, Velo Ata Ben Chorin Lehavatel Mimenah. We are not required to finish the job, but we are not free from trying.
It teaches us that we are not judged on the results, but rather on the efforts we exert towards that goal. Now while the lesson of “trying your best” is an incredibly important one, at the end of the day in order for things to function, in order for institutions to work, in order for the world to go round, practically speaking, the buck has to stop somewhere. While trying our best is what is asked of us, somehow, someway, the job needs to get done. There are certain people in this world who take this credo mentioned above and follow a different matra: “It IS up to us to finish the job.” These special souls are the ones who see a need and proclaim “Hineni”, here I am. It is these individuals who do everything they can, beyond just the normal effort, whatever needs to get done, and carry the load to ensure that the job always gets done. “Alecha Hamlacha Ligmor” This evening we honor two very special people who in their own special ways, have taught so many of us what it means to take initiatives and do whatever needs to be done to ensure that things get done. Peter is the poster child for the phrase “Big Things Come in Small Packages”. It is hard to miss Peter, whether at services in shul, at a meeting, or in a meeting that he ad hocly is holding during services. Peter is a bundle of energy, ideas, and yes… opinions. While Peter always has a lot to say, his mouth dwarfs in comparison to his heart. It is the passion that Peter brings to everything that he does that is contagious, and the sensitivity and warmth that drives him. More importantly, he believes very strongly, whether it be for his shul, his school, his people, or for the greater good, that someone has to make sure that the job gets done. That someone is quite often Peter himself. Amy on the other hand, has a very different approach, thank G-d, but the same goal in mind. Amy’s love for her shul and community is displayed in all of her volunteer work and the quiet way she efficiently does everything that she does. Whenever something needs to get done, Amy is always right there to ensure that it done well. She and Peter, along with Rachel and Maxine, are pillars of our congregation and community, and it is because of them that so many things actually happen at Ohav. To Peter and Amy I wish for you the same as G-d wishes for His people- that your days should be many on this earth, so that you can continue to contribute the time, talents and diligence bestowed to you in order to make so many more contributions to the world. B’ahava, Rabbi Ira Ebbin

JOURNAL DINNER MARCH 10, 2012
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
hav Sholom is pleased this year to salute Amy and Peter Tannenbaum as our honorees for
the 49th annual journal dinner dance. This tribute is for their years of dedicated service to
Ohav Sholom and the Jewish community. From the time that Amy and Peter became
members of Ohav Sholom they connected with a group of young families that had recently joined and
started to be active in synagogue leadership. They made many close friends, and helped to make
many other new families feel welcome as they moved to Merrick and joined Ohav. They became
involved in Sisterhood, Ohavim, Board of Directors and Executive Board and eventually Peter
became Ohav President. Peter is still an active attendee at executive and board meetings and is not
shy about giving me advice or guidance.
Both Amy and Peter volunteer their time for our regular Bingo game and many other events including
Shalach Manot and past Journal Dinners. Amy and Peter also devote a considerable amount of their
time to Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County where their two daughters Rachel and
Maxine have attended since kindergarten and are now in High School. Peter is currently on the board
at Schechter where he is diligently working with other Ohav parents to build the school into an even
stronger institution.
For Ohav’s 40th anniversary celebration Peter chaired the fundraising committee for our newest sefer
torah and all available naming options were sold out. For many years Peter was our leadoff hitter and
regular left fielder on Ohav’s softball team, but if you asked him he always wanted to play the infield.
Amy and the girls were always at the games cheering the team on. He is a regular at Ohav’s annual
golf outing and he regularly plays and contributes to other charitable organization’s outings.
Amy and Peter are the first to join in the celebration of a simcha, and are also the first to be there in
support of a loss or a difficult time that another family is going through. They are diligent and hard
working at everything they do. Whether it’s for Ohav, Schechter, family or business, they give it their
all which is the only way they know how.
Mazel Tov on this honor!
Barry Birnbaum

A MESSAGE FROM AMY AND PETER
Words can hardly express the gamut of emotions that Amy and I feel upon being bestowed this incredible honor. So much of who we are today, as children, parents, spouses, siblings, responsible business leaders and active members of our community, has been shaped by our involvement in Ohav Sholom.
A brief history
Neither of us grew up in an orthodox environment and joining an orthodox Shul, let alone becoming active leaders of such a prominent organization was the furthest thing from our minds when we first met in the summer of 1985. Although we grew up a mere 2.3 miles (thanks Mapquest) from each other in Woodmere and North Woodmere, we had to venture all the way to Massapequa to meet by chance at a party. Amy was about to enter her sophomore year at Ithaca college, and I my junior year at Clark University. It was love at first site; the whirlwind type of romance they write novels about! We dated on and off (and on and off, and on and off) for much of the next several years and when it became apparent that no one else would put up with me, Amy agreed to marry me in the summer of 1991. Amy had been working for several years as a media buyer and traffic manager for a prominent direct response advertising agency and I had recently started my own business, Neal Management, Inc. (predecessor to my current company Ramax Search, Inc., Executive Search Consultants), after working for two leading staffing / executive search firms.
Amy’s family had traditional roots in Judaic observance highlighted by her attendance in Hebrew school for a short time, and regular worship at High Holiday services. My family was (and still are) long time members and leaders at Temple Hillel of North Woodmere and I had a very traditional conservative movement upbringing, filled with attendance at Hebrew School and Hebrew High School, regular synagogue attendance on Shabbat and Yom Tov and observance of kashrut. Yet by the time we were married, religion played a very small part in our lives. While we maintained a kosher home, early married life was not filled with much else in the way of observance or spiritual growth and we only attended synagogue sporadically.
In 1995, after spending over 2 years looking for a house all over Long Island, we decided on Merrick. We had been blessed by the birth of their first daughter, Rachel a little over a year prior, in October 1994, and recognized the need to establish family roots. We moved to this neighborhood trusting that between five local synagogues, one would meet our needs (little as they were) and in fact sampled four of these synagogues prior to joining Ohav. By the time our second daughter, Maxine, was born in August, 1997 we knew that although we had a house in Merrick, we had found a home at Ohav Sholom. Although still relatively new members and somewhat reserved and shy (yes, you read that correctly), we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support that we received from the Ohav community. When Amy’s father passed away suddenly in 2004, again it was the Ohav community that answered the call, offering unwavering support and kindnesses that will never be forgotten.
10 CONGREGATION OHAV SHOLOM
JOURNAL DINNER MARCH 10, 2012
From those apprehensive days when we first entered Ohav, there was one unique feature of the Shul that kept us coming back; while most of our previous religious experiences had been predicated on making us feel bad about all that we could not do, Ohav Sholom made us feel good about all that we could do! This unique, non-judgmental, “baby steps” approach towards Judaic practice, encouraged by our long time Rabbi, Jeremiah Wohlberg and now by our dear friend and current spiritual leader, Rabbi Ira Ebbin, has enabled us both to grow in so many ways. As we began to attend more regularly, we were welcomed by fellow Ohavites to their homes for Shabbos and Yom Tov, encouraged to participate in and lead services/read Torah and grow at our own comfortable pace. In short, we feel that we have been the beneficiary of so much in the realm of spiritual growth through our “Ohav Experience.” We have come to embrace this path towards leading a more spiritual and religious life and have been blessed to have been accompanied on this journey by so many of our dearest and beloved, our Ohav family.
Our family’s Judaic life has also been enriched greatly by the Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County and High School of LI where our 2 daughters have attended since kindergarten. (They are currently in 9th and 12th grades). This too had not been part of our original plan, but again, the unbelievable dogma of “teaching without forcing”, guilt free Judaism and education as the tool to a sustained Jewish future have resonated so loudly with us, encouraged by Ohav Sholom. We are so proud of our affiliation with Schechter.
As the years went by and we got more and more involved at Ohav, we have risen through the ranks of leadership, fueled by our strong desire to give back to our Shul and community. Just as Ohav was there to welcome us and help create a meaningful path for our lives, we have strived to be there for the generations that have followed us. We know that all we have done is small in comparison to all that we have received and for that, we are eternally grateful.
As Ohav Sholom enters its sixth decade, it is only through strong leadership (Rabbinic and lay) and incredible volunteerism that Ohav Sholom can and will continue to thrive. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all that have worked so tirelessly and diligently for the past fifty years and especially during Peter’s presidency, to help ensure that our Shul was, is and will always be an exemplary organization and the Gold Standard for Modern Orthodoxy.
Once again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you Ohav Sholom!
Amy and Peter Tannenbaum
