This yedrt Dinner was a bitmper occasionwith one of the best evet attendances as108 |]aberdashe15 and gue5ts fi l led theHaberdashers' Hall. The participati0n 0f severalreunion gl0ups, notably 23 members of thetlass of 1978'i as well as a nurnber from'68,'88 and '98 leavers helped to make this a l ivelyand enjoyable evening.Ihe Dif ner provides anideal opport!nity for year groups to qettogether for 10, 20, l0 even 40 yearreunions and we hope lo see these gfowin future years.

After a fine dinnef and the customaryinformal toasts which enabled thePfesident to take wine with all thedirer5, the speeches began with thetoast to the Habefdashers' [ompantSchooland 6overnors, proposed by AlanPhipps, wh0 had organised the 40 yearreunion party for'68 leavers.

Mikelean5, formerChairman of the Boyl5choolcomrnittee, hon0rary member ofthe 0.H.A. andour host as lMaster Habetdasher, was able toaddress us in his own right, after having sp0kenat four previous Dinners as a substitute forothers. Alan Newman, the President presentedl\,4ike with an 0.l l.A. t ie jn fecognition of hissupport for the Association over rnany yeafs.

The Headmaster, Peter Hamilton reported onthe past year at the 5cho0I which as usual, leftthe formef pupi s in his audience amazed at the

range 0f activit ies that todayt Habefdashe15manage to pack in. Duncan Jenkins, the schoolVice Captain proved that Haberdashets areas cocky as ever by not being afrald to faise alauqh at the Neadmaster's expense. His fathef,Richard, (1974) was among the diners whoenjoyed heafing Duncan! strictly unofficialanecdotes of s(hool l i fe.

0ur guest speaker, Peter Bradshaw (1980), the6uardian film critic, lived up to Jonathan Ross'sdescription 0f him as one 0f our best comicwrlters with a very amusing des(ription of hiscareer path since his first acting experiences ifSch0ol plays. He recounted how this led him onto an Englkh PhD. and F0otliqhts performancesat (ambridge and then to writ ing T.V.scripts with his contemp0rary David Baddiel

before endinq up being paid bynewspapers to wat(h lots of f i lmsand write about them. Nice work ifyou can get ifl

Alan Newrnan concluded theevening with thankstothespeakersand to Roger Lyle, the organiser ofthe Dinner and to Andrew [aspari, the toastmaster. lt4any of thediners then enjoyed a final drink atthe Hall before making their wayhome.

ALAN Bt00M: INTERVIEW

Early this summer whenDawnay, Day, a 12 billionfinancjal cong omerate, raf into diffc!lties afterfindirq itself caught upin the cfedit crunch, therewere few surprlseg whenthe companyturnedto AlanBloom for help. B oorn, whoheads up Ernst & Young'scorporate resttuduringtearn, has ong since

established his reputation as a leading insolvency specialist, one ofthe City's most 5uccessfu' corporate undertakers i

Bloom is one ofthefew remaininq insolven(y expertsto have playeda prominent r0 e in the recession of the early 1990s. He has had toremain calrn in any number of crises since. But he is best known, perhaps, forthe part he p ayed jn the sale ofBafings afterthe collapseofBritain's oldest rnerchant bank, and for his role as an administratorfol Railtrack. Atthe time, ajournalistatThe 5un dubbed him "the manto put our railways back on track I

There was a lot of media interest in Bloom after Railtrack wasplaced in administEtion. And an intefview in on the broadsheetnewspape$ even (overed his sch0o days at Haberdashers. Accordingto the interviewer,'Alan\ t ime at public s(hoolwas not particuladyenjoyable. fle was a dlligent pupil but never a 5raf.'

Alan aughs when the afticle is mentioned.' lwas forever in themiddle, at times the lower 0fthe middle. But I enjoyed Habs more asitwent on, the lastthree years espe(ialy.lwas a late devel0perand Iappreciated it mofe towa fds the end.'

Fromtheaqe0f l6heknewthathewantedtobeanaccountant' lwasinfluencedbyfamiyfriends, itseerneda goodidea' and hehopedtotake [,laths. A'Level. But his leach€rs had other ]deas. 'l rememberit being 5aid, don t let him d0 [, laths, he's not qood enough."'50 hetook Econ0mi6, English and |]istoryintheSixth Form, taughtby Peier5quile, Ffank Hanbidge and Clive flowe. And hethrived t0thepontthal he had a dllemrna.

By the Upper sixth, the 5ch00 wanted him to try for 0xbridge. 'N0

one would even have dreamed ofita few yean earlierl'ButAlan wasdetermined to become an accountant, and univer9ity wou d havedelayed his qualif.ation. ' You didn't need t0 qo to university to do ti,therewasa perfectlyleqitimate a ternative career path."

Howdidteachersat Habs. react?'Theywere notirnpressedl'Anddiditmatter, inthe end, that he nevergotthat A Levelin l4aths? twouldhave been too theoretical, he tells me. '^,,1y carcer has been aboutapplyln! numbers, tryingto advise people based onwhatthe numbersaretelling me, ratherthan aboutthetheory ofnumbefsthernse v€s. Asmuch as thi5job is about the numbers,lt is about consensus bui ding, the consensls between borfower and lender, its about establshinqtrust between a lparties.'

Aticled at Lane Heywood, Alan qualiied in 1980. He j0ined ArrhurYoung in 1981 and became a partner in 1988, one year before itbecame Ernst &Young. He has concentrated, throughout his caf€er, ondea ing with managementtearns in trouble. People tend to burythe rheads in the sand, Alan explains, they put thinqs offifthey (an.'Theyh0nest y belleve what they'f€ saying, they think that things wjll getbetter, butpeopletend to painta rosierpidurewhen in diffrculty.'

And fa se hope creates problems: in insolvency situations, the 0ngeryou leave thing5 the worse they gel and the fewer options there arefor restfucturlng. The role ofthe recovely professional is to push ba(k,'t0 say, 'thls doesnl fing true, that doesn r add up'l optimism is on€thing, Alan says, but tfying to defy gravity is another A certain kindol s(epticlsm ls requiredt "you cannot take things on trust, you haveto have an enquifing mind, you must be wary 0ftaking things at facevaluel

Alans nrst large assignment was acting as joint administrator of0lym pia & York, the pa rent (0mpany ofthe Ca na ry Wharf developme nt,which faced severe diffio ties in 1992 after banks refused to extend it5loans. 'Thiswasthethickofthe last fecession. lt was a wastela nd overthere, there were eiqhttenants, n0ne 0fthem were paying tent, andthey were alllooking t0 get outl' l,,loth ba I ing the whole CanaryWhafproject had become a serious possibility.
