HANK'S DANCE by Don Armstrong

3

Formation: Four couple contra sets, FIRST couple active and crossed over, 8 x 64 counts.

Note: This dance may be danced in traditional long sets with couples 1, 4, 7, etc., active and crossed over. However, this is a different, yet very acceptable,•way to dance some "triple set-up" contras. Many Scottish.Country Dances utilize this formation. ·

Dancing a three.,.. coup! e figure in a four coup! e set: The first time, couple #1 will dance with couples #2 and #3; while couple #4 waits out one turn. Then the second time, #1 will dance the figure again, this time with couples #3 and #4 (who 'are automatically "re"'.'numbered" as new #2 and #3), whi 1 e the original #2 couple waits out~ne turn at the top of the set. At the end of the second time, the original #1 couple slips unobtrusively to the foot of the set (where they get a chance to rest), while the "new top couple" begins the dance .. now as "couple #1" {They were the "original" #2 couple). Thus, with eight repeats of the music,~.every couple gets to dance each "place" twice, and rest once at each end of the set.

Record: LS# 328, (Seanna's Reel). Live music: On the Road to Boston.

INTRO, 1-8 9-16

With the corner dosado, - - - - With the corners, circle left,

Same four, circle right, - - - - Active couples swing - , - - - - , Actives down the center, pass two, - - - Cast out, up around just one and in, - - - Up, cast off, slow square through,

- Turn, - - - turn,

Remember that each active couple dances the figure only twice and then goes to the f:oot of the set. At that time a NEW active coup! e starts the dance.at the head of the set!

Not all trip! e formation dances are danced comfortably in this formation. Before deciding to do so, visualize the dance and feel confident that the choreography will let the active couples flow from the end of the dance to the foot of the set in a convenient manner as the new couple starts at the top.

This dance, a "training dance" choreographed to easily acquaint leaders and danc·1~rs with an alternate method of dancing triple formation contras, is named for my friend, Henry "Hank" Caruso, Vice-president (1994) and long-time member of the Lloyd Shaw Foundation board of directors.

Music: Any good Mexican polka, such as Las Perlitas~FLP 1898 Viva Mexico; Atotonilco, Columbia EX 5110 Marachif The Sound of Mexico. Other usable records are RCA record LPM 1619 or the 45 rpm of the same; CBS record EPC 316 (45 rpm) or Musart 1154 (45 rpm).

Formation: Couples in a circle in promenade position, facing LOD. Hands are crossed in front, girl's R hand in man's R, L in L. .

Part I: Man starts on L ft, woman on R. Take 4 steps in LOD, turn to face partner but continue in same direction. Step to side with L ft, step with R behind L, step with L to L. Woman does same but starts with R ft. (To make this easier to teach, use this technique: Walk 4 steps fwd, CCW around the ring; without dropping hands, burn inward and face the other direction and walk bkwd, still moving CCW around ring with a 1,2,3 touch outside toe.)

Finish Part I facing partner, joining R hands.

Part II: Single circle formation with all holding partner by R hand and the other person by L hand. ·

All balahce fwd and back (men moving away from ctr, women toward ctr).

Now hold R HANDS only with partner and with that person turn halfway around. Then rejoin hands in a single circle fiormation again. This time men are facing ctr, women have backs to ctr.

Balance fwd and back again, then this time turn L HAND person by L hand halfway around and this will be your NEW partner.

Immediately cross hands with this new partner and begin dance over again, moving fwd side-by-side· as in Part I.

Do the steps in a strutting Mexican manner -- have fun!

LEMONIA (Epiros)

The tune Lemonia, meaning lemon tree, is a very popular melody from the region of Epiros, northwest Greece. It is most often danced as a simple "Sta Tria" or even as a rhythmically modified "Sta Dhio." The following, more complicated version, is from the repertoire of the dance troupe of the Lykiion Ellinidhon of Athens~ As is often the case in Epiros, the "Sta Dhio" or "Poghonisios," is attached as a ~ort of coda at the end of the main dance.
