Kiley McKinna of MC Marketing Management was selected as the

North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Promoter of the Year. He was recognized at the annual banquet held January 9, 2017, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Denver, Colorado.

This prestigious award is given to a person or industry who has displayed an active interest or role in promoting the Limousin breed.

Roger Vorthmann of Treynor, Iowa, made the presentation and stated. “The recipient this year displays a passion for the Limousin breed and its breeders that is evident when you visit with him. Honesty, integrity, a pleasant personality, and a sincere care and concern for everyone he has contact with are descriptive of him. His energy and enthusiasm for Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle are contagious when you are around him.”

Kiley and his brother, Mike, grew up on a farm/ranch in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada. He graduated from Redvers High School in Redvers,

Josh Guttau Named NALF Commercial Producer of the Year

Josh Guttau of Timber Stream Cattle Co., McClelland, Iowa, was

honored at the 2017 National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, as the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Commercial Producer of the Year. The award was presented to Guttau at the annual banquet held at the DoubleTree Hotel Monday, January 9.

Guttau is a sixth-generation agricultural and cattle producer in the southwestern part of Iowa. His fourth great-grandfather homesteaded some

of the farm back in the 1860s and it still remains in the family.

Josh stated, “It has been my honor to be the Guttau to bring our family ‘knee deep’ back into the cow-calf industry.” He started his career with an 8th grade 4-H breeding heifer project from his uncle’s cow herd which was across the road on the original family homestead.

As a high school freshman, Josh built a file in Microsoft Excel that he still uses today for tracking cow and calving information. The file contains all of the information back to the beginning heifer 25 years ago. This has allowed him to make improvements over the years and create uniformity in the herd.

The past two years, Josh has been able to use the success of his banking organization to launch their family ‘head first’ into the production side of the ag industry. The operation is now located in two places, 20 miles apart. They have

350 acres in Treynor and 1,000 acres at their Glenwood site. Josh maintains a strict breeding limit for bulls; yearling bulls naturally service 20 cows, 2-year-old bulls are allowed 30 cows, and 3-year-old bulls and older cover 30-35 cows. A 75-day calving season is the goal. Guttau retains approximately 25 percent of the heifer crop as possible replacements. He prefers homozygous black and polled.

Timber Stream Cattle Co. includes 1,250’ of fence line feed bunks used to winter cows and bulls, heifer development; and backgrounding calves to 550-750 weights before sending to feedlots for finishing or to a sale barn. Their herd consists of 500 cows (commercial Angus, Lim-Flex, and Hereford Black Baldies). They use all Limousin or Lim-Flex bulls purchased from Vorthmann Limousin and the Iowa Beef Expo.

Saskatchewan. Kiley received his Associate Degree in Animal Science in 2003 from Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska, and in 2005 he received his Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Ag Business from Fort Hays State University. Kiley was on the livestock judging teams at both schools.

He began his career in the Limousin breed in 2005 working as a field man at Limousin World and he continued in that position until 2013. He embarked on a new venture in 2013, starting

MC Marketing Management. Kiley said, “After nine years of learning and understanding both the seedstock and marketing business, it was a natural transition into owning my own business.” His new role keeps him “on the road” traveling to sales, shows and other Limousin events. He continues to be a major sponsor and contributor to both junior and senior Limousin benefit auctions.

Celebrating Kiley’s award at the banquet were his parents, Kelly and Jeannine McKinna. Kiley and his wife, Shawna, live in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. Congratulations, Kiley!

Wow, what a February! Limousin activity in the

Heartland was busy with sales, banquets, and many miles, miles, miles and more miles driven. Yet it is gratifying to know that the Limousin breed is alive and well.

Sometimes we become concerned that Limousin is on the decline because we hear that our product is not viable for the market demands. The Heartland continues to have a strong following using Limousin genetics in the commercial industry. Trends are always interesting

to watch. The renewed demand for red bulls by our customers was apparent in the sales. The comments by commercial breeders indicating that they needed to put muscle back into their herd did not fall on deaf ears.

The fact is, we need to constantly improve the product we produce. We have done a good job improving our two areas of concern. Docility still is a demand trait mainly because of our aging producers who do not want the hassle of difficult cattle. No breed has done more to improve the docility in their seedstock herds than Limousin. We all remember the stories from 20 years ago how rank our cattle were. We, as breeders, have made tremendous strides in creating a docile Limousin bull and female. We need to continue to be mindful of culling unruly animals. I believe we now can proudly say we are among the leaders in the industry in producing an acceptable docile bovine.

The second trait of concern was that our strength of muscle was antagonistic to marbling. Again, we as breeders need to continue working toward putting more marbling in our finished product. However, close-outs of Limousin-influenced fat cattle indicate that we have made significant improvement in producing a choice product with increased yield as well. I have been receiving reports of close-outs from both seedstock and commercial producers that were mere pipe dreams a decade ago. The latest close-out on a producer’s cattle indicated an 80% Choice 1 and 2 with a 65.5 % yield.

There were no standards or no-rolls. One producer told me his close-outs reached a high level of choice and yield and he had used implants in some of those cattle.

It is great, in my opinion, that we are producing a product that tops the market with verified results of high choice and high yield. Other breeds may hit the choice standard, but not many can do that and still maintain a high yield.

We need to continue to strive to produce the excellent carcass quality with an excellent yield in order to maintain and grow our market share using Limousin genetics.

There are articles in this issue of the Heart Beat concerning the upcoming National Junior Limousin Show and Congress July 1-7 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Read the articles and consider your participation in this can’t-miss summer event.

The Heartland, thanks to its member states, are close to reaching our proposed budget for the event. Although some of the expected funds are not forthcoming, our back-up plan should help make-up for the deficit. It would be nice to have more people featured in our “picture project.” Please consider helping us meet our financial goal by sending in a picture ($100) that will place you in the stands.

We also need volunteer workers to give a day or two helping the committees provide a great experience for the youth attending the NALJA show. Please consider volunteering your service to the show. Thank you!

Now that the holidays are over and another National Western Stock

Show is in the books, we are in the middle of a very busy sale season. Dean and I feel like our heads are “spinning,” driving from sale to sale. We ended up sleeping in our own bed eight nights the entire month of February. March looks a little better with most of the sales on the weekend.

This year our schedule meant Dean and I had to go our separate ways on four occasions so we could attend all the activities in the Heartland. It was the only way that we could cover the sales, shows, and annual meetings. That’s why you may have seen one of us at an event but not the other.

It was great to see so many of our Limousin friends from across the

country come together for the National Western Stock Show. It was a busy week with meetings, a banquet, a sale and three shows.

Members of the Heartland Limousin Association helped with the NALF Hospitality tent in the Yards on Monday-Thursday. The coffee was always on and the popcorn was freshly popped. We appreciate everyone who stopped in to visit. A very special THANKS to the HLA members who helped in the tent. Jerry and Norma Effertz, Judy Symens and Tom Vaughn were always there to lend a hand, and John Symens was a big help when it was time to load up on Thursday.

We are now focusing on the next big activity—the 2017 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress

at the state fairgrounds in Nebraska. We hope you join us as we “Escape to Grand Island” July 1-7. The Heartland Limousin Association is hosting this show and it’s a big undertaking. We would appreciate the help from our members in a variety of ways. Contact Brenda Anderson, general chairman, and let her know when and how you can help during the week. As the old saying goes, “Many hands make light work.”

In the last issue I wrote about funny experiences that Dean and I had while we were at cattle events. It’s happened once again! We were on our way home from Arizona, where we spent time over the holidays. While we were there, we made our yearly trip to Los Algodones to see Humberto, our dentist. We did some shopping and purchased a “donkey” as a gift for our son.

We made a very quick trip home, trying to avoid bad weather. The second night on the road, we were very tired and went right to bed. About midnight, Dean heard voices in the motel hallway. He thought they said, “We’ve got the donkey.” He was sure that someone had broken into our car. He got up, got dressed, and went out to check. Everything was just fine. The next morning we thought about it and decided what they really said was, “We’ve got the door key.”

I was really tired that morning, after all the commotion during the night. I decided to apply some lotion; however, it would not rub in. After looking at the bottle, I discovered I had taken the shampoo rather than the lotion. A quick shower got rid of the sticky mess, but I did smell very good. Life on the road can be very interesting!

Several years ago the Heartland Limousin Association put out a cookbook as a fundraiser. We appreciated everyone who submitted recipes for the book. Pam Callahan of Centerview, Missouri, sent in this recipe for Spaghetti Pie.

6 oz. cooked spaghetti noodles 1 cup cottage cheese

2 T. margarine 1 lb. browned hamburger

½ cup Parmesan cheese 1 jar spaghetti sauce

2 eggs, well beaten ½ cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded

• Mix cooked spaghetti, margarine, Parmesan and eggs together.

• Layer this mixture into the bottom of a 9x13 pan.

• Spread cottage cheese.

• Mix the browned hamburger and spaghetti sauce together, pour over the top of the noodles.

• Bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees.

• Sprinkle with shredded cheese and bake 5 minutes more, until the cheese melts.

• You can double this recipe and still put it in the 9/13 pan.

NALF Annual Meeting Held in Denver

The North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) held their

annual membership meeting and election of board members Monday morning, January 9, 2017, at the National Western Club in Denver, Colorado.

Two new members were elected to serve three-year terms on the board. They are Dan Hunt of Oxford, Nebraska, and Gene Raymond of Garnett, Kansas. Three NALF directors were re-elected for a second three-year term. They are Gary

Fuchs of Cameron, Texas; Gary Gates of Absarokee, Montana; and Joey Freund of Elizabeth, Colorado.

The annual meeting included the “State of the Breed” review given by Mark Anderson, NALF Executive Director and Joe Epperly, Assistant Executive Director. In addition, committee reports were given, a financial review was presented by Gary Fuchs, NALF treasurer, and Robert Loewen, auditor, and the minutes

from the last meeting were voted on by the members.

Rebecca Ferda, chairman, gave a presentation and showed a video on the 2018 International Limousin Congress (ILC) that will take place in Denver, Colorado, July 19-27.

The ILC is a global organization for Limousin Associations around the world. It not only serves as an opportunity to exchange industry and research knowledge, but also provides a memorable

experience on the culture of the host country. Those attending head home with memories and lasting friendships.

This event is held every two years and is hosted by a different country. The first ILC took place in 1973 in France and the United States hosted it in 1992. Other countries who have served as hosts are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) will be making significant changes over the next few years. There was a large display on the wall in the Pen and Carload Arena. It was interesting to see what they have planned for the future of the NWSS. Here are some questions about the history of the NWSS.

Limousin Events in Denver Concludewith Pen & Carload Show

The Pen and Carload Show, held Thursday, January 12,

2017, concluded an exciting week of Limousin events at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colorado. Fifteen exhibitors brought 18 pens and six carloads for judges Donnie Robertson of Yukon, Oklahoma; Don McLennan of Byers, Colorado, and Blake Bloomberg of Stillwater, Oklahoma, to evaluate.

PUREBRED PEN OFTHREE SHOW

The grand champion purebred Pen of Three bulls and the People’s Choice winner was exhibited by ROM’N Limousin of Arlington, South Dakota. The Division II champion pen of March red bulls had an average weight of 1,093 lbs. with an average weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.56.

The reserve grand champion Pen and Division II reserve champion goes to Coleman Limousin Ranch of Charlo, Montana. Their pen of February bulls had an average weight of 1,195 lbs. and a WDA of 3.68.• Division Winner from

The reserve grand champion Pen and Division III champion goes to Lawrence Family Limousin of Anton, Texas. The April bulls had an average weight of 1,053 lbs. with a WDA of 3.86 lbs.• Division Winners from

Magness Land & Cattle also took home the reserve grand champion banner with their carload of 2016 January, February and March bulls. They had an average weight of 1,353 lbs. with a WDA of 3.83.

ROM’N Limousin, Arlington, SD, led out the Champion Purebred Pen of Three and People’s Choice.

Reserve Champion Purebred Pen of Three was owned by Coleman Limousin Ranch, Charlo, MT.

Magness Land & Cattle, Platteville, CO, showed the People’s Choice and Champion Lim-Flex Pen of Three.

Reserve Champion Lim-Flex Pen of Three title went to Lawrence Family, Anton, TX.

Symens Brothers of Amherst, SD, earned the Peoples Choice award with their carload of red Limousin bulls.

Iowa News…Field Day in Osceola

The 2017 Iowa Junior Limousin Association annual field day will be held the weekend of June 17 and 18 in Osceola. Jason Boyer, Jay Smith and their families will be the co-hosts for this event.

There will be a barbecue supper Saturday night for all juniors, their families and other Limousin enthusiasts. The show will begin the next day, Sunday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m. Entry forms may be obtained from the website or from Grant and Brenda Anderson.

One applicant will win the $500 award to be used toward the purchase of a Limousin or Lim-Flex heifer at next year’s Iowa Beef Expo sale in Des Moines.

Kansas News…State Sale Moves to New Location

The 2017 Kansas Limousin Breeders Association State Sale, “The Flint Hills Choice Sale,” will be held in El Dorado this year. That is a change from where it has been held in the past. Mark your calendar for March 10 and 11 and come support your association!

Minnesota News…Banquet and Benefit Auction Held February 25

Members of the Minnesota Limousin Association traveled to Litchfield for their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction. The event was held on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the Litchfield VFW.

The day began with a social followed by the buffet meal. Proceeds from the benefit auction help support the senior and junior associations throughout the year. We appreciate everyone who attended the banquet, donated items, and/or bid on the items. Thank you!

The three breeders were Casey Fanta, seedstock manager for Wulf Cattle of Morris, Minnesota; Andy LeDoux with LeDoux Ranch in Agenda, Kansas; and Andy Rausch, a fourth-generation rancher at Rausch Herefords in Hoven, South Dakota.

Casey, along with the other two gentlemen, explained their programs,

how they get ready for their sales, the type of auction that they hold, the history of their sales, how they advertise, and what goes on the day before and on the day of the auction.

It was a very interesting and informative article for those holding production or consignment sales.

Carlyle F. Willette Jr., age 84, formerly of Delavan, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 12, 2017, at The Beacon in Mapleton, Minnesota.

He is the father of Mark (Sharilyn) Willette of Delavan, Limousin breeders and past board members of the Minnesota Limousin Association and the Heartland Limousin Association.

He was born September 8, 1932, in rural Delavan, the son of Carlyle and Rosemary (Bach) Willette. Carlyle is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Lake Crystal, Minnesota; son Mark (Sharilyn) Willette of Delavan; granddaughters, Lindsay (Bill) Reyes of Canyon, Texas, and Lauren (Dustin) Mohrhauser of Wall Lake, Iowa; a great-granddaughter, Morgan Mohrhauser; four sisters, two brothers, and several nieces and nephews.

Congratulations to Wulf Cattle of Morris, MN, for being awarded the 2017 Beef Quality Assurance Cow-Calf Award at the NCBA Convention in Nashville, TN, February 3.

Missouri News…Missouri Limousin Weekend in Lebanon April 8-9

Members of the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) will hold their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction Saturday, April 8, 2017. Please note, this is earlier than it has been in the past few years. The evening festivities will be held at the Laclede County Fairgrounds in Lebanon.

The meeting will take place in conjunction with The Great American Pie Sale the next day, Sunday, April 9 at the fairgrounds, starting at 1:00 p.m. Lunch will be served prior to the sale.

The social will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by the meal at 6:00 p.m. There will be a silent auction, live auction, and a raffle. We appreciate all of the donations and bids on the items. If you are not able to attend, please contact a member of the board of directors to leave a bid. Nebraska News…Cattlemen’s Classic Heldin Kearney

The Limousin portion of the 26th Annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic took place February 22-23, 2017, at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney. The show was scheduled for the morning of February 23 and the sale followed in the afternoon. Bruce Brooks of Marietta, Oklahoma, served as the auctioneer for the sale. The junior events took place Saturday and Sunday, February 25 and 26.

A special thanks to those who took part in the festivities, brought treats and donations, and helped with the meeting. We appreciate the support of the members and commercial cattlemen who came to the Limousin events at the Classic.

Members Gearing Up for NALJA Show

Members of the Heartland Limousin Association, the Nebraska Limousin Association, their families and friends are gearing up to host the 2017 National Junior Limousin Show and Congress July 1-7 in Grand Island. We are looking forward to seeing the island decorations and juniors in their

tropical clothing in honor of the theme, “Escape to Grand Island.” There will be plenty of flowers, Hawaiian shirts, leis, grass skirts, Palm trees, and other island decorations throughout the barn.

We need all of our members to assist throughout the week serving meals, helping to decorate, assisting with stalling, and working as greeters. Boyer Limousin Awards Scholarship

Jay and Carol Boyer of Liberty, Nebraska, awarded a scholarship to Carter Siems of DeWitt, Nebraska. The scholarship is given to young people who have a background in Limousin cattle and have shown their projects at the county, state, regional or national levels.

Carter purchased an open heifer, JTBO Miss Classy Gal 527C, sired by HUNT Zippy out of a JTBO Responder dam, from the Boyer’s and has shown her at their county fair as well as several progress shows.

Wisconsin News…Banquet, Benefit Auction and State Sale March 4-5

Mark your calendar for the weekend of March 4 and 5, 2017. The weekend begins with the annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction Saturday evening at the Log Cabin in Bangor. The social begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a delicious prime rib dinner with all the trimmings.

South Dakota News…Members Travel to Rapid City for Festivities

Members of the South Dakota Limousin Association (SDLA) and other Limousin enthusiasts traveled to Rapid City for their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction at the Ramkota Hotel Thursday, February 2, 2017. The event took place in conjunction with the Black Hills Stock Show. The Limousin Show and Sale were held the next day, February 3, at the Convention Center.

A great crowd of seedstock and commercial producers from South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin along with

their families and friends gathered for a delicious prime rib buffet dinner followed by the meeting and benefit auction. Matt Bruner, SDLA president, welcomed the crowd and introduced the members of the board. Warren Symens presented the treasurer’s report.

Dean Summerbell, Heartland Limousin Association (HLA) Executive Secretary, presented the South Dakota Commercial Producer of the Year award to Rick King of Philip. He also gave a report on the various events that he has attended in the past year in South Dakota as well as an update on the 2017 NALJA Show, “Escape to Grand Island” July 1-7 hosted by the HLA.

Judy Symens, co-chair of the picture project, gave further details about this fundraiser for the NALJA show.

Chisum Peterson auctioned off the benefit auction items. There were a number of unique items along with baked goods including Shirley’s famous apple pie, decorative items and horseshoe art. In addition, there were

cattle supplies, semen and advertising. Highlighting the evening was the bidding on the Mystery Envelope of Cash and the Mystery Box.

Thanks to everyone who donated and/or bid on the items at the benefit auction. The money raised goes to support activities for the associations throughout the year.

Rick King & Sons Named South Dakota “Commercial Producer of the Year”Rick King & Sons of Philip, South Dakota was named as the 2017 South

Dakota Limousin Association (SDLA) Commercial Producer of the Year. They were presented with the award at the SDLA annual meeting and banquet February 2, 2017.

This award-winning operation is a family-run enterprise comprised of Rick, his wife, Donna, sons Chip, Chad, and Clay, and daughter, Jennifer, and their

respective families. The primary ranch operation is located 20 miles north of Philip in Haakon County, South Dakota.

The King operation is a terminal-cross program. The 900+ cowherd is made up of Angus/Black Baldy cows that are purchased as bred heifers. The heifers calve in March and the cows in April. They calve on the open prairie in large pastures and are checked once a day.

King loves the fact that Limousin calve easy and have vigor at birth. Phenotype, docility, calving-ease, vigor and growth are the primary

traits that the Kings use for their bull selection. All calves are backgrounded and marketed through Philip Livestock Auction each year in mid-January where they are consistently at or near the top of the market.

Rick began using Limousin bulls back in the early 1970s, when they first came into the United States. He purchased halfblood Limousin bulls from Ross Nielsen and Dugan Stewart. As higher percentage bulls became available, he purchased them and he continues to use high percentage or purebred Limousin bulls.

In the spring of 2016. Rick King & Sons turned out 40 herd bulls—ALL of them Limousin. He is loyal to the breed, the local livestock market and community.

Over the years he has purchased bulls from South Dakota breeders Ludens Family Limousin, ROM’N Limousin, Bar JZ Ranches, Smit Limousin, Peterson’s L7 Bar Limousin as well as Waddles from Wyoming, and Venner Limousin from Iowa. Rick and his family have also bought bulls at the Red Carpet Sale at the Sioux Empire Farm Show and he is a regular supporter of the Black Hills Stock Show Limousin Sale.

For 40+ years, Rick King & Sons have believed in and continue to carry the flag for the Limousin breed and what it offers to the beef industry. Congratulations!

Members of the Fullblood Limousin Alliance (FLA) met in Tulsa, Oklahoma, January 21,

2017. Members not able to attend in person were able to take part via a conference call. There were 38 members present representing 21 farms.

An election of officers was held, and ballots from those at the meetings as well as the mail-in

ballots were counted. The 2017 officers and board members are: Stephen Haynes, president; Bob Stone, vice president; Joe Latendresse, treasurer; and Kim Kosmicke, secretary. Ty Heavin was re-elected a director and Stacy Kitchen was newly elected to the board. We want to thank retiring board members Randy McCutcheon and Betty Anglani for their service on the board.

The next meeting will take place in Lebanon, Missouri, April 8, 2017. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the Great American Pie Sale at the Laclede County Fairgrounds. The time and location of the meeting will be announced later in the Fullblood website and by email.

Fullblood Members Travel to Denver

Stephen, Emily and Carter Haynes of A C H Holdings of Bowling Green, Kentucky, made the long trip to Denver, Colorado, for the National Western Stock Show. They brought their bull, ACH Diamond 82D ET, a 3/1/16 red, double polled son of Posthaven Polled Yellowstone out of CCPV Polled Utopia. There was a lot of interest in this Fullblood bull in the

barn. ACHH Diamond 82D was also the 2016 Top-Selling Limousin bull.

Among the other Fullblood members who traveled to Denver for the NWSS were Danny and Connie Crockett, Ken Ragsdell, Betty Anglani and Ty Heavin.

National Farm Machinery Show In February the Haynes family set up a display at

the National Farm Machinery Show. This major event ran from February 15-18 in Louisville, Kentucky. Their display featured materials about Limousin cattle and the Fullblood Association.

In addition, Ken and Jan Ragsdell, Rockin’ R Ranch of Rolla, Missouri, handed out his Rockin’ R Ranch Snack Sticks. They introduced two new meat products made with Limousin beef. They also gathered marketing data and contact information for the development of a market using 100% Limousin beef. More than 300,000 people attend this event annually.

In the NewsCarter Haynes and ACHH Diamond 82D made it

on the 2017 NWSS Rodeo and NWSS Stock Show Promotion Video. The Haynes family exhibited the only Fullblood in the open show. This video will be used all year long to promote the stock show.

NALF Releases Spring 2017 EPDs

New expected progeny differences (EPDs) from the Spring 2017 international cattle evaluation

were released January 27, 2017 for the North American Limousin Foundation and Canadian Limousin Association. These EPDs are the result of work from NALF’s and CLA’s service providers International Genetic Solutions (IGS) and Colorado State University.

This evaluation saw high correlations for the breed with slight shifts in the breed averages for weaning weight and yearling weight. The reason for this slight shift is due to both improved connectivity with IGS partner’s datasets and original French herdbook animals. This shift required in-depth evaluation and resulted in a delayed release.

Molecular breeding values are incorporated in the EPDs of individuals with those values using blending methodology to produce GE-EPDs. These animals are designated by the GE-EPD logo and highlighted EPD values.

Genetic trends, percentile ranks and trait leaders can be found at NALF.org and on the NALF-DigitalBeef registry platform.

Drs. Jackie Atkins, Lauren Hyde, and Wade Shafer of IGS provide the following explanation regarding the new multi-breed stayability EPD.

“Along with the Spring 2017 EPDs, comes a move to multi-breed stayability (ST) EPD from IGS using the much-anticipated new genetic evaluation software, dubbed BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools). The ST EPD uses a random regression approach to predict stayability developed by Dr. Janusz Jamrozik and colleagues from the University of Guelph and the Canadian Simmental Association. Dr. Scott Speidel at Colorado State

University, Dr. Bruce Golden (Theta Solutions), and the genetics team at International Genetic Solutions (IGS) (Lauren Hyde, Wade Shafer, Mahdi Saatchi, and Steve McGuire) worked together to incorporate the new methodology into the IGS evaluation. The new stayability evaluation includes data on animals of varying breed composition, directly incorporates genomic data, produces true accuracy values and provides ST EPDs to all IGS partners on a common base.Features of the Multi-breed stayability with BOLT:1) Multi-breed stayability. As mentioned, the new

ST EPD is calculated for all cattle in the database (not just for purebred and fullblood, as it was in past evaluations). The calculation of EPDs in this fashion required the new evaluation to account for heterosis, which can be sizable for a trait like stayability.

2) Direct incorporation of genomic data. This evaluation represents the first time “Single Step” methodology has been used in the beef industry on a large database. The innovative approach refers to DNA marker results being incorporated directly into the genetic evaluation, rather than being incorporated post evaluation or as a correlated trait. Single Step is widely accepted as the most powerful means of leveraging DNA for genetic prediction. The use of a Single Step approach on a large database (the largest in the beef industry) was made possible through the use of BOLT, IGS’s revolutionary new software developed by researchers Dorian Garrick and Bruce Golden through Operation Quantum Leap.

3) More “accurate” prediction of accuracy. Prior

to BOLT, the calculation of EPD accuracy was relegated to using indirect methods that were very imprecise, which commonly resulted in calculated accuracies being a poor estimate of the EPDs true accuracy, i.e., an EPD assigned a high accuracy may have truly been a low accuracy EPD and vice versa. Until the development of BOLT, the direct calculation of accuracy was thought to be impossible on a large database due to computational limitations. By leveraging statistical methodology unique to genetic evaluation and cutting-edge computer programming, BOLT calculates accuracy directly, thereby making it a much more “accurate” estimate of true accuracy.Because the indirect methods used prior to BOLT

tended to overestimate accuracy, you will notice that the accuracies associated with our new ST EPDs will tend to be lower than the accuracies calculated in the prior evaluation of stayability. This does not mean that we are predicting stayability less accurately than in our previous evaluation - in fact, due to BOLT’s ability to leverage phenotypes and genotypes more effectively we are actually predicting stayability with considerably more accuracy-it does mean that the published accuracy is a better gauge of how much confidence you should have in an EPD. This fact will

help seedstock and commercial producers manage selection risk.

4) Change in base. Breeders will see significant movement in ST EPDs from previous evaluations, not only because of improvements in methodology, but also because of a change in base. However, changing the base does not affect the ranking of cattle; it simply shifts all EPDs up or down by the same increment.

Hunt Limousin Ranch Holds Customer Appreciation Day

Hunt Limousin Ranch of Oxford, Nebraska held a Customer Appreciation Open House

and Dinner on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Cattle

were available for viewing from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The day ended with a prime rib dinner and program.

Customers traveled from as far away as New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas and Minnesota as well as the home state of Nebraska to attend this event. The guests enjoyed the sunny, 60 degree day as they made their way through the bull lot looking at potential sires.

Several speakers took part in the program. Frank Padilla, NALF Director of Marketing, presented an informative power point presentation on the value of Limousin cattle in a cross breeding program.

Dr. Matt Spangler of the University of Nebraska spoke about the use of technology in identifying enhanced genomic indexes.

After the meal, served by the Hunt family, Trent Loos of Loup City, Nebraska, a renowned speaker on Western heritage, entertained the folks with a common sense approach to the value of agriculture. He incorporated the past with present-day advances that have been made in food production. He said, “We now supply the nation with more food produced on fewer acres.” He also entertained the crowd with stories about his experiences as he travels across the country on his speaking tours.

Charlie Hunt reminded those present of the blessings of liberty that we, in America, have and the freedoms we all enjoy. He thanked his family for their support through their 40+ years of producing cattle. Charles and Nancy’s son, Dan and his family will be taking over the operation and will continue to provide their customers with Hunt Limousin genetics.

Effertz Named Chairman of National Beef Industry Organization

Jerry Effertz, a cow/calf operator from Velva, North Dakota, has been elected chairman of the

Federation of State Beef Councils for 2017. The Federation of State Beef Councils is the home of state beef councils at the national level, representing state

beef council interests and helping establish funding and direction for the national Beef Checkoff Program.

Effetrz and his wife, Norma, operate Effertz Black Butte Acres Limousin Ranch, raising seedstock Limousin cattle and backgrounding feeder calves. Jerry is the third generation of his family to own and operate their farm and ranch. They also operate Black Butte Adventures, which includes hiking and biking trails as well as farm tours. This is a way that they can educate people about the cattle business and stewardship of the land.

Jerry has served in leadership positions in several state and national beef industry organizations. He was chair of the North Dakota Beef Commission, a national director on the U.S. Meat Export Federation, chair of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association Purebred Council, a member of the Heartland Limousin Association board of directors, and a

founding member of the North Dakota Limousin Association. He has also served on several national beef checkoff committees including the Retail, Public Relations and Global Growth Committees as well as the Joint Checkoff Market Research Working Group, where he was chair.

In addition to serving as 2017 chairman of the Federation, Effertz will serve on the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC), which helps determine funding for beef checkoff projects at the national level.

The Federation of State Beef Councils is a division of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), which is a contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program. The Beef Checkoff Program is administered by the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, with oversight provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Michael E. Christie, 65, of Baldwin City, Kansas, passed away February 6, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Otttawa,

Kansas, and was a lifelong resident of Baldwin City. Funeral services were held February 10, 2017, at the Ives Chapel United Methodist Church in Baldwin City.

Throughout his entire adult life Mike was a rancher, turning his part-time job into a full-time job, operating Christie Hay & Cattle with his wife, Martha. Before he ranched on a full-time basis, he worked for Cloud Heating and Cooling in Lawrence, Kansas, and Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #2 in Kansas City. In the early 1990s, he owned and operated Mike’s Trading Post and Mr. C’s Liquor Store in Baldwin City.

Mike was a member of the Ives Chapel Methodist Church in Baldwin, the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association, the Heartland Limousin Association (HLA), and the North American Limousin

Association. His two sons, Chad and Clint, were involved in and showed Limousin cattle in the Junior program.

He dearly loved spending time with his grandchildren and in later years enjoyed traveling. He especially enjoyed the Alaskan cruise and the Panama Canal cruise with his wife, Martha, and other members of the Heartland Limousin Association. He loved going to cattle sales and buying cattle. He was always ready to go to the next sale.

Mike is survived by his wife of 47 years, Martha; two sons, Chad and Clint, both of Baldwin City; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Justin Christie, two brothers, and many other friends and relatives.

DJ Dazzle Me, a 3/12/16 daughter of EXAR Classen out of DR Roses N Chocolate, went on to be named 7th overall in the Supreme Champion Drive out of 250 heifers.

Blane Keyes of Knapp, WI, took home the grand champion banner in the Sioux Empire Junior Show with his purebred Limousin heifer, MRL Dance With Me 651D, a 5/17/16 daughter of BBLM Yoakum.

Future juniors for South Dakota Limousin Junior Association were at the Black Hills Stock Show watching the show.

In less than five months juniors, their families, friends and other Limousin enthusiasts will

converge on Grand Island, Nebraska, July 1-7, 2017, for the National Junior Limousin Show and Congress. The show will be hosted by the Heartland L i m o u s i n A s s o c i a t i o n . Members from the states of Iowa,

Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin will be hard at work putting on a top-notch event.

Brenda Anderson of Garner, Iowa, serves as chairperson for the show. She needs volunteers to serve on a variety of committees including: set-up, arrival/traffic control, opening ceremonies, food, hospitality/decorations, show ring decorations and set-up, vendors, photo back drop, kid’s corner/daily activities, awards, thank-you notes, social media/advertising, and clean up. The Limousin portion of the Sioux Empire Farm Show was Thursday, January 26, 2017,

at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Heavy snow fell Tuesday and some of the events at the show were delayed a day; however, by Thursday the weather had cleared making it possible for breeders and commercial cattlemen to travel to Sioux Falls for the Limousin Red Carpet Show and Sale.

Consignors to this annual event were South Dakota breeders Bruner Limousin of Winfred, Nolz Limousin of Mitchell, ROM’N Limousin of Arlington and Symens Brothers of Amherst. Also consigning to the sale were Ellsworth Limousin of Elkhorn, Wisconsin; Leishman Brothers of Blair, Nebraska; and Lura Limousin of Delavan, Minnesota.

SHOWShane Lindsey of Prairie City, Iowa, evaluated

the quality set of Limousin and Lim-Flex cattle. The show was delayed for two hours due to weather which made it impossible for one of the judges to attend. As a result, Shane judged all of the shows Thursday.

SALEThe top-selling bull was Master BRUN 2948C,

a 4/8/15 black, polled purebred son of Master BRUN Oscar. He was consigned by Bruner Limousin and purchased by Tracey Welch of Westfield, Iowa, for $4,600.

Kent Waitt of Sheridan, Indiana, purchased ROMN Dirty Deeds 103D for $4,500. He is a 3/7/16 red, polled purebred son of LFLC Big Country consigned by ROM’N Limousin.

Master BRUN 2974C, a 4/26/15 red, polled purebred son of Master BRUN Ripley, consigned by Bruner Limousin, was purchased by Monte Rosen of Balaton, Minnesota, for $4,200.

Repeat buyers Laura and Kelly Sieh of Clear Lake, South Dakota, purchased two bulls. They bought NOLZ Deuce 41D, a 3/19/16 double black, double polled purebred son of DHVO Deuce 132R consigned by Nolz Limousin for $3,800.

They also purchased KNLZ Dominator 14D for $3,500. He is a 4/4/16 black, double polled son of KNLZ Windy 158B consigned by Nolz Limousin.

ROM’N Limousin also took home the reserve grand champion banner with ROMN Direct Deposit 101D, a 3/11/16 red, scurred purebred son of LFLC Bank Account 701B out of ROMN Born Free 27B.

The reserve grand champion female was ZEDL Cow 620D, a 2/28/16 black, polled daughter of Master BRUN 2782B out of Lady BRUN 2079Y exhibited by Leishman Brothers.

The grand champion bull, exhibited by ROM’N Limousin, was ROMN Dirty Deeds 103D, a 3/7/16 red, double polled purebred son of LFLC Big Country 759B out of ROMN Xceptional 12X. He was a member of the grand champion Pen of Three and People’s Choice winner at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO, January 12, 2017.

The grand champion female was Miss SYES Friendly 106C, a 3/4/15 red, homozygous polled daughter of SYES User Friendly 524U out of Miss SYES Aglow 146A exhibited by Symens Brothers.

Andy and Mike Slaba of Geddes, SD, were buyers at the Red Carpet Sale in Sioux Falls.

Rob, Brenda, Neil and Audrey Brawner, Bullis Creek Ranch of Wood Lake, Nebraska, hosted

their 17th annual “Generations of Predictability” Production Sale January 30, 2017, at the Burwell Livestock Market in Burwell, Nebraska.

This date was a major change for the Brawner family, who previously held their annual Limousin and Red Angus sales in April. Not only did they move their sale date up several months, they also sold only coming 2-year-old bulls rather than a mix of yearlings and 2-year-olds.

The genetics they offered are the results of more than 40 years of AI breeding and selection for balanced traits. Every year they bring a quality set of bulls and heifers to Burwell for the seedstock and commercial buyers to evaluate and buy. This year’s sale featured predominately the Red Angus bulls.

The top-selling Limousin bull was BRAW Tractor 5182C, a 5/4/15 black, homozygous polled son of BRAW Xtractor 380A out of BRAW MS Stout 2141Z for $4,500. He was one of three Limouisn bulls purchased by Alan Steinke of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Steinke purchased BRAW Topper 5155C, a 4/20/15 red, homozygous polled son of LFLC ZZ Top 70Z out of BRAW MS Prize 7122T for $4,200.

The third bull bought by Steinke was BRAW Topper 5143C, a 4/17/15 black, homozygous polled son of LFLC ZZ Top 70Z out of BRAW MS Predestined 182Y for $3,800.

BRAW Xtracxtor 577C, a 3/18/15 black, homozygous polled son of Wulfs Xtractor X233X out of BRAW MS Bond 9179W was purchased by Taylor Farms of Phillipsburg, Kansas, for $3,000. They have purchased bulls and females from Bullis Creek Ranch for 17 years. They were the volume buyer, taking home 10 head of Red Angus and Limousin bulls.

The females were brought in by pen and the buyer had the option to buy one or more for the price that was bid. The top-selling Limousin female was BRAW Drewdrop 623D, a 2/25/16 black, double polled daughter of LFLC Big Country 759B out of

BRAW MS Predestined 144. She was purchased by Russ Johnson of Sebeka, Minnesota, for $2,000. He was one of the volume buyers, purchasing a bull and five females.

Bullis Creek Ranch Holds 17th Annual Sale

Audrey Brawner took an active role in the Bullis Creek Sale. Her parents, Rob and Brenda, appreciated her work at the Sandhills Sales in Burwell.


Nebraska commercial breeders Eldon Kieborz of Loup City and Cory Markus of Rockville purchased Limousin females at the Bullis Creek Sale.

Commercial Red Angus breeders Tim and Dee Painter of Valentine, NE, purchased Limousin and Lim-Flex open females from Rob and Brenda Brawner at the Bullis Creek sale.

A sunny 50 degree day in Burwell, NE, was a welcome sight to the Bullis Creek offering at the Sandhills Livestock Market in Burwell.

Alan Steinke of Idaho Falls, ID purchased the three high-selling bulls at the Bullis Creek Sale in Burwell.

The Heartland Limousin Association has commissioned C.J. Brown, a well-known artist, to paint a one-of-a-kind picture featuring Limousin breeders and cattle. We will have juniors in the ring with their heifers, a judge, announcer, spectators in the stands and spectators standing along with rail. There will also be banners with ranch signs/logos around the ring.

Many of the spots are now taken; however, we still need people (adults and juniors) sitting in the stands watching the show. The price is only $100 and the money raised will help to defray extra

expenses at the 2017 NALJA Show in Grand Island, Nebraska. This offer is open to anyone from across the United States. We appreciate the efforts of Norma Effertz of Velva, North Dakota, and Judy Symens of Sisseton, South Dakota, who served as co-chairmen of this project.

The Limousin portion of the Black Hills Stock Show and Sale took place Friday, February

3, 2017, at the Rapid City Convention Center. Seventeen breeders brought a quality set of bulls and heifers for Judge Brady Jensen of Manhattan, Kansas, to evaluate. The Limousin show began at 9:00 a.m. followed by the sale at 1:00 p.m. MST.

Consignors from South Dakota were Riley Buck of Bryant, DeRungs Limousin of Ramona, JLX Limousin of Elk Point, Ludens Family Limousin of Viborg, Peterson’s L7 Bar Limousin of Pukwana, ROM’N Limousin of Arlington, Symens Brothers of Amherst, Torgerson Farms of Artesian and Kyle Vechoek of Bruce. Iowa consignors were Boyer Family Farm of Weldon and Venner Limousin of Breda; Wisconsin consignors were Franseen Limousin of Marshfield and Spring Creeks Cattle Co. of Wauzeka; and consignors from Minnesota were Lura Limousin of Delavan and Wulf Cattle of Morris. Leishman Brothers Limousin came from Blair, Nebraska.

The grand champion Limousin bull ended up winning the Supreme Champion title Saturday night. L7 Calvados 5035C is a 4/2/15 homozygous black, homozygous polled 75% Lim-Flex son of L7 Xtreme 0067X out of Miss L7 156Y exhibited by Peterson’s L7 Bar Limousin.

The grand champion female was LFLC Candie 111C, a 4/10/15 red, polled daughter of Wulfs Ziplock N9222Z out of LFLC Yo Go 750Y exhibited by Ludens Family Limousin.

The Division I reserve champion was JFAF Doc Holliday 71D, a 3/2716 red, polled son of LFLC Bank Account out of JFAF Beach Babe shown by Franseen Limousin.

The Division II champion was Sprng Crks Classic 231C, a 10/17/15 homozygous black, homozygous polled son of Wulfs Warrior 9302W out of EXLR Reeba 231U exhibited by Spring Creeks Cattle Co.

Favorable tenderness ratings for beef steaks have remained steady over the past five years, according to recent checkoff-funded research. The 2015-16 National Beef Tenderness Survey was conducted at Texas A&M University, which has regularly studied this important trait since 1990.

While fewer branded products were surveyed compared to 10 years ago, results from the 2015-16 survey found most steaks were considered tender. Warner-Bratzler shear force values, an objective measure of tenderness, were consistent with those noted five years ago for ribeye, top blade, top loin and sirloin steaks.

Similar to previous years, the latest survey indicated a need for more industry force on tenderness and improving over-all consumer satisfaction with cuts from the round. Because the survey showed rounds are sometimes not sufficiently aged and

consumer understanding of specific cooking methods for round cuts is limited, improvement in consumer ratings for this primal could be increased.

Texas A&M meat scientist Jeff Savell, the lead investigator on the research, said beef is delivering a good eating experience to consumers. He said the research suggests the industry is “keeping its eye on the ball” when it comes to maintaining beef tenderness.

“Future focus needs to include a collective effort to utilize optimal aging practices, as well as more support for extensive consumer cooking education for round cuts,” Savell said.
