Jan WeberEquestrian vaulters from around the world will descend upon

the Bluegrass state in July 2009 in preparation for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Hundreds of athletes and horses will compete at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky in two of the most important vaulting competitions of the year: the American Vaulting Association/United States Equestrian Federation National Championships and the Kentucky Vaulting Cup.

For the first time in our sport’s 40-year American history, the AVA will be bringing its National Championships to the Midwest. The Championship will be the first competition in the new 6000-seat indoor arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. The AVA expects 300 competitors to compete in this National Championships from July 9-12, 2009.

“We are excited to be bringing this unique and spectator-friendly sport to the home of all that is equestrian: Kentucky,” said AVA President Sheri Benjamin.

From July 30-August 2, the new 6,000 seat, state-of-the-art, climate-controlled equestrian facility at the Kentucky Horse Park will be the site for the Kentucky Vaulting Cup, an international vaulting competition (CVI) and the official vaulting test event for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The CVI will bring vaulters from around the world to participate in the event and experience the venue before competing in the World Championships in 2010.

Check out AVA’s Kentucky online pages (www.americanvault-ing.org/Kentucky/) – your source for everything you need to know about going to Kentucky including directions, where to stay, horse help, and all you want to know about the competitions.

Focus on Vaulting in Kentucky

Events that take place during park hours will be included with admission to the park, which is $15 for adults and $8 for children, and $3 for daily parking. Events that take place in the evening will not include an admission charge as they are not during the park’s hours. There is a one-time $5 event parking pass that will be available to competitors only that can be purchased upon arrival at the park.

Nancy Stevens-BrownAs the 2010 Alltech FEI World Games

countdown edges ever closer, all the eight FEI disciplines are carefully finalizing their preparations for the most prestigious equine event ever to be held on American soil. For our part, the AVA will host two groundbreaking competitions at the newly completed Kentucky Horse Park venue in Lexington, Kentucky. More Than Competitions

Beyond these historic competitions, one key part of our organization’s ongo-ing preparation will be to take advantage of the many excellent vaulting coaches, horses, trainers and vaulters, who will be converging on Kentucky. The AVA plans to sponsor several clinics and camps during those weeks when we have a large pres-ence in the Lexington area. The Education Committee has drafted a long-term plan to provide targeted outreach in that region, starting in the summer of 2009 and going on continuously through the 2010 Games and beyond.

This innovative regionally targeted AVA program is designed to allow us to take advantage of the many talented AVA members who will be in this area to compete. By enlisting their talent and time to teach half-day clinics and camps for interested Pony Clubs, 4-H, riding schools and equestrians in the region, we hope to

greatly advance vaulting in Kentucky and the surrounding areas.

Kentucky is a hotbed of the U.S. horse industry and the eyes of the world will be on Lexington in 2010 so it is primed for this time-sensitive outreach. As part of the plan the AVA will also offer additional backing by providing grants, equipment rentals and follow-up support to the partici-pating regional groups in order to fully take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime oppor-tunity to promote vaulting. By launching this targeted educational blitz centered around the upcoming Games, we believe that we will trigger an avalanche of vault-ing awareness, interest and buzz and, in the long term, create lasting regional growth in an area that today remains inexplicably underdeveloped.US Vaulting Wants You!

Our Educational Committee Chair, Wendy Ware, is currently accepting the names of anyone who would be interested in teaching a clinic or camp during their stay in Kentucky. There will be a fee paid to those authorized to lead AVA sponsored clinics. In addition, scheduling and orga-nization will be arranged by a committee member. For further information on how you may participate in or ask for one of these exciting Kentucky teaching events contact Education Chair, Wendy Ware at [email protected].

Alysha Wilson As she stood outside of the arena

in Watsonville, Calif., Tasha Thorner visualized her upcoming performance, completely prepared to strut her routine in front of an enthusiastic audience for the 2008 National Championships.

At 12 years old Thorner has kicked off her vaulting career with a gleaming bronze medal, winning the 2008 national champi-onship; in 2007 she was AVA’s Women’s National Copper Champion.

“It was like a dream,” says Thorner about her 2008 accomplishment.

While anticipating the announcement of the winner, Thorner already felt proud of herself for her performance and all the work she had put in throughout the year at practices and previous competitions.

“I knew that I had won, that all of the efforts, snags, persistence, sweat and improvement had paid off,” exclaimed Thorner of Mt. Eden Vaulting Club in Saratoga, Calif.

the 2009 AVA Annual Convention.

With the help of several coaches, Thorner made her routine come to life. Before Nationals, Thorner was at the barn with coaches three times each week prac-ticing her individual routine and every day at home on her barrel, as well as at A-team practice three times a week at the barn.

Thorner immersed herself in vault-ing to become the best she could be, and succeeded.

“My freestyle won all of the com-petitions [in 2008] except one,” says Thorner.

Thorner does not think while she per-forms. She says months are spent practic-ing her routine until it becomes rhythmic and flows through her automatically.

During the 2008 season Thorner per-formed her routines on Vermeer, building a special bond between the two.

“When I am on him he knows what my moves will be and he works with me beautifully,” says Thorner.

AVA Nationals are a time for vault-ers, coaches, parents and other vaulting enthusiasts to connect. Thorner believes Nationals are a time for everyone to show appreciation of each other and how all involved have contributed to the growth of the sport.

Calif. in 2004 with a small club called High Point Vaulters. She started vaulting as soon as the club began working out of Peck Ranch, the same barn where she took riding lessons. After the club disbanded in 2006, Thorner began driving for almost an hour to vault with Mt. Eden Vaulters.

Her fire for vaulting had been lit with High Point Vaulters and Thorner yearned for her learning to continue further. With much gratitude to her first coach Holly Rothweiler, she continued on to various cities, states and countries competing and furthering her talents.

In 2008, Thorner competed with her team at the CVI in Aachen, Germany. Mt. Eden’s head coach, Emma Seely, recalls the young girl going into the arena at the CVI during down time and playing soccer with vaulters she had never before met.

“She’s kind of a goofy one, fun loving

and playful and yet when it comes to work she’s ready to buckle down, do her job, focus and pay attention,” says Seely. “It’s quite a nice dichotomy and since she is one of the younger ones, it’s great to have that playfulness in there.”

With some background in vaulting and a strong passion for the sport, Thorner has grown.

“She started out with talent but she was a little shy,” says Seely. “She’s really come full circle in the last two or three years.”

“As I perfect one level of skills and abilities, as I learn to master moves that I could not do the year before, I always have other skills and goals ahead of me,” says Thorner. “There is no end to the challenges that I face in vaulting, and it teaches me that I can achieve far more than I previ-ously thought I could. I have to learn to deal with insecurity, fear, mistakes and disappointment. It prepares me for facing other challenges in all parts of my life.”

Alysha Wilson A sweltering August in 2008 brought

young Joey Gadd closer to his dream than he had imagined during the AVA National Championships in Watsonville, California.

At 14, Gadd has won the 2008 AVA Men’s Bronze National Championship.

As one of the few boys vaulting with the Mt. Eden Vaulting Club in Saratoga, Calif., Gadd has moved quickly through the ranks. He began vaulting by attend-ing lessons through the drop-in program at Garrod Farms and later moved on to competing.

“One of my favorite parts about vault-ing is being on the horse,” says Gadd.

That horse this past year was Ama-deus, a Mt. Eden horse who has carried vaulters to National Copper, Bronze or Silver Championships four times over the past three years. Gadd performed his individual freestyle on Mt. Eden’s peren-nial favorite, and was very proud to have vaulted on a horse that carried champions in previous years.

When Gadd was not busy vaulting or helping with the horses during Nationals, he spent his time in the crowd, cheering on his teammates and cooling off in the ocean with his friends.

As the competition came to a close Gadd began to relax and unwind. As he waited with the other young men in his di-vision he began to feel happy and no longer felt the pressure of the competition.

Gadd says he and two other young men in his division (Colton Palmer and Kyle Marchini) were eager to hear the winner announced because their scores were all very close.

“I was pretty amazed because I didn’t expect to win it,” says Gadd.

During the regular season he usually only has one other male to compete with, so having a few others in his division made the 2008 Nationals much more memorable for Gadd.

Friends of Gadd from outside the vaulting community came to watch him perform and left in amazement at all they had seen him do.

“They think I’m crazy,” reports Gadd.

As he tried to relate to a person who has never seen vaulting, his voice became more baffled. He says he is nervous to begin competing in Silver because there

Joey Gadd - 2009 USEF/AVA Bronze Men’s National Championare moves he is not yet comfortable with. And as Gadd works his way up through the ranks, he sets new goals for himself.

“When I became the Trot Men’s Champion I started thinking seriously about vaulting,” remembers Gadd. “I’ve come such a long way.”

Gadd believes that vaulting has made him mature a lot faster than many young men do, but says that age helps vaulters comprehend instruction and mechanics.

very challenging for your mind and your body,” said Gadd.

In his free time, Gadd finds himself at the barn with his horses, often riding Western Pleasure. His horse Cowboy and pony Polly live at Garrod Farms only 15 minutes away from his home but it is not close enough for Gadd.

“I wish they lived at my house,” says Gadd about Cowboy and Polly with a hint of yearning in his voice.

Gadd’s coach, Emma Seely, continues to learn more about the young man as he enters adulthood and hones his vaulting skills with her guidance.

“In the last six to nine months he’s really decided to be more serious about vaulting and put more real focus into it,” says Seely.

She says he is able to stand on almost any horse and as he gains experience, he will make an even better base than he already is. She loves to see him connect vaulting to something else he loves be-cause it ignites a spark in his eye and really improves his vaulting.

She remembers the first time she saw him make such a connection. It was be-tween airplanes and flight, and his swings almost immediately became higher than before.

“Watch out for Joey Gadd,” exclaims Seely.

“Vaulting is a very unique sport that’s very challenging for your mind and your body,”

As Gadd stretches, he bears in mind that he needs to, no matter how uncomfort-able he finds it. He stretches once every two days but is slowly beginning to do it more often.

“I want to become a better vaulter, have a better ethic toward stretching and do the stuff I need to do to be able to become tight, controlled and balanced,” says Gadd.

Soon he will be attending more train-ing camps and aspires to one day vault in the World Equestrian Games. As Gadd moves to the upper levels of vaulting, he finds himself eating healthier food and focusing on staying in shape.

“Vaulting is a very unique sport that’s

Grant Well UsedPeggy Van Hook

Lompoc Vaulters sends our deep ap-preciation to the AVA and the AVA Grants Committee. Thanks to you we had a won-derful clinic with Isabelle Bibbler-Parker.

Clinics are a great way for vaulters and coaches to grow and get new ideas. We learned all about freestyles and how to design, develop and perform them. Isabelle taught us how our freestyles are scored and gave us many tips to help in-crease those scores. She taught us about warm-ups, performance and even music selection. We not only learned a great deal from Isabelle, we had fun with other vault-ers and recharged our enthusiasm for our wonderful sport. Thank you for making this possible for us.

Alumni Membership Drive Under WayJulie Divita

We’re inviting all former vaulters to join the AVA. A special membership deal is offered. Help us spread the word by en-couraging your vaulting alumni to rejoin the AVA. Coming soon and exclusively to the AVA website, alumni members will have members-only access to really cool alumni vaulting memorabilia (photos, videos, contact information and more). On top of that, for every former vaulter who joins the AVA, that member’s region will receive a benefit: • 1-Year Web-Only Alumni Member-

ship ($15) - Region gets $1.00 per member

• 2-Year Web-Only Alumni Member-ship ($25) - Region gets $5.00 per member

• 5-Year Web-Only Alumni Member-ship ($55) BEST VALUE! - Region gets $5.00 per member and member gets AVA Car Decal.

Grants UpdateJan F. Garrod

The AVA Grants Committee received a huge amount of requests in 2008. Twelve applicants requested over $19,500 in total. It was a challenge since the committee is authorized to give only $2,700 in two flights (spring and fall).

There were seven requests for clinics, one for a competition, two for surcingles, one for travel and one for club start-up help. Unfortunately the committee felt it couldn’t help everyone. We decided that we must focus on clinics. It has always been the grants committee’s goal to pro-mote clinics and competitions before help-ing with other projects. Clinics, with their hands-on approach, can be self-promoting, an income source for these outlaying clubs and a strong avenue for increasing the awareness of the sport. We have been very hesitant to make grants for equipment as horse owners need to make the commit-ment to join the sport. Buying or earning equipment is a first step.

$2080 was given away in total. A small award of $160 went to a new start-up in Texas. Six clubs received $270 to $435 for clinics. These clubs were based in Lompoc, California; Vermont Center, New York; Bulls Gap, Tennessee; Mt. Vision, New York; Spring Hill, Tennessee and Salem, Utah. Congratulations. For those clubs not awarded any grants at this time: don’t be discouraged and try again. In the 14 years this committee has been in existence it has given a total of $35,000 to over 90 applicants. The AVA is helping!

THE USEF SPORTSMAN’S CHARTERThat sport is something done for the fun of doing it and that it ceases to be sport

when it becomes a business only, something done for what there is in it;That amateurism is something of the heart and spirit - not a matter of exact

technical qualifications; That good manners of sport are fundamentally important; That the code must be strictly upheld; That the whole structure of sport is not only preserved from the absurdity of un-

due importance, but is justified by a kind of romance which animates it, and by the positive virtues of courage, patience, good temper, and unselfishness which are demanded by the code;

That the exploitation of sport for profit alone kills the spirit and retains only the husk and semblance of the thing;

That the qualities of frankness, courage, and sincerity which mark the good sportsman in private life shall mark the discussions of his interests at a competition.

Call for 2009 USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award NomineesRosie Brown

Since the inception of this program in 2006, the USEF continues to invite each of its affiliates to submit one nominee to be reviewed for the USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award. There are approximately 20 affili-ates who may each submit one nominee to contend for this award. The winner receives a lifetime membership from the USEF, and if the nominee is from the AVA, a lifetime membership to the AVA.

So what do the coaches of the AVA have to do with this? We would like you to submit one eligible vaulter from your club for this award to the AVA Youth Rec-ognition Committee. This AVA committee will first slim down the list of applicants to one per Region, and then choose one vaulter to be put in the USEF nominee pool from which the USEF will then choose the award winner. An alternate shall also be chosen should the AVA nominee win this award and not be able to accept it. Each applicant chosen to represent their respective region will be recognized at the AVA Annual Convention Banquet in March of 2010.

equine industry. The past workshops have included tours at Keeneland Race Track, Gluck Equine Research Center, The Rolex Course at the Kentucky Horse Park, Rood & Riddle, Sunrise Stables, Hallway Feeds, The WEG 2010 Office and much more.

Annalise VanVranken (FACE and former FAME team member) was the AVA nominee for 2006 and took part in the June workshop in 2007. “The big-gest part of the USEF Youth Sportsman’s Charter Award was a week long Equestrian Career Workshop in Lexington, KY. It was absolutely amazing, an awesome, efficiently organized, jam-packed week of tours, workshops and activities. We had breakfast one morning while watch-ing the workouts at Keeneland Racetrack, lunch with the USEF Board of Directors another day, and USEF President David O’Connor gave a talk and joined us for dinner one night. This was absolutely the best workshop I’ve ever attended. It was great to meet the youth representatives of all the other disciplines. We had lots of fun and made lasting friendships. Actually, if I have a chance, I’d go again in a heartbeat!” And in 2009 she will, as she was selected as our nominee again for 2008.

Eligible recipients must meet the fol-lowing criteria:

Marianne RoseThe United States Equestrian Federa-

tion hosted a vaulting training camp on April 4-5 at the Frankel’s home in Wood-side, California. Isabelle Parker and the USEF organized the event. The clinicians were Gero Meyer (technical test exercises), Devon Maitozo (freestyle construction and choreography), Craig Coburn, Katie Peuvrell and Jim Donak. Almost all of the top male vaulters in the USA attended this event. Mt. Eden and Woodside brought horses to join the Pacific Coast mounts. For the first time a male-vaulters mini-camp was part of the USEF camp. Gabe Aniello from Oregon said it was a “Nice change of pace - to have so many guys here.”

Vaulters were split into three levels. Each of these levels was then divided into smaller groups to ensure individual-ized instruction. Jim Donak, an expert in rehabilitation of injuries and weaknesses, led stretching and strength-building work. He provided a variety of bungee-type and balancing equipment, which looked like lots of fun. Vaulters who attended the last USEF clinic were able to build on their previously developed skills. Katie Peuvrell held one-on-one sports psychol-ogy sessions in the morning and taught choreography in the afternoon.

Saturday featured a mock competi-tion. Judge Craig Coburn (FEI C) provided lots of comments about compulsories and freestyles. AVA VP Competitions, Linda Bibbler served as his clerk. It was a very relaxed atmosphere with real smiles dur-ing the competition performances. After the dinner break, Craig Coburn presented a mini judges seminar with focus on com-position and the technical test.

Private and semi-private sessions with the clinicians were held all Sunday.

The vaulters and the AVA thank the USEF, the Frankel family and all those who helped make this event special for our vaulters.

Jacqueline/Nellana LobdellMaking vaulting friends around the

world has been one of the most enjoyable parts of vaulting in our household. April 3-26, we hosted Charlotte Kantel and Marcus Koeder from Germany. From our home base in Hanford, they traveled through Southern and Central California giving lessons and clinics. They also had time to visit Disneyland, Sequoia and Yosemite National Park and Las Vegas, Nevada. Clubs that participated in the clinics and lessons included Diamond Bar, The Riding Academy, Lompoc Vaulters, M.A.R.E., Showtime and Voila. Here is what some of the vaulters had to say about clinics with Charlotte and Marcus:

Kyra SherwoodOn April 4, 2009, The Riding Acade-

my Vaulters attended an amazing trot clinic hosted by Diamond Bar Vaulters and coor-dinated by Voila Vaulters. German vaulter Charlotte Kantel and gymnast Marcus Koeder taught the clinic. To warm up we ran laps uphill and down and around the property. We began on the barrel drilling on the mount repeatedly for compulsories. After dramatically improving our mounts, Charlotte worked with each of us on per-fecting our flags – turning the hip under, straightening the arm, and lifting the chin. Charlotte’s instruction helped me to realize just how much my flag needed to improve! After the flag, we briefly covered scissors and handstands. Charlotte was firm, suc-cinct and extremely clear as an instructor. Between turns on the barrel, Marcus had us doing rigorous conditioning exercises.

We moved on to working with The Riding Academy’s trot horse, Ted. Of all the members of our vaulting team, Ted was the only one who performed his exercises perfectly according to Charlotte.

Kantel/Koeder Clinics a Hit in California

Charlotte was firm, succinct and extremely clear as an instructor. Between turns on the barrel, Marcus had us doing rigorous conditioning exercises.

After spending a strenuous afternoon working with Charlotte and Marcus we were grateful but exhausted.

We all attempted to execute a com-plete circle while standing on his back. After standing frontward, backward and sideways, I gained perspective on the compulsory stand. We then practiced on a green horse, Karen, formerly a Premarin mare, which was a bit challenging. Char-lotte helped the mare to become more comfortable with the new vaulters.

Finally, we worked on “Bunny the Wonder Horse” – new to vaulting, but mak-ing an excellent start. Only fifteen hands high, she is a quarter horse, not a draft horse. After spending a strenuous after-noon working with Charlotte and Marcus we were grateful but exhausted. Attending this clinic was a rewarding learning experi-ence and one I would happily repeat.

Lauren HortonI really enjoyed the clinic we had

with Charlotte. We worked on our com-pulsories, especially the mount and flag. Marcus had us do lots of muscle-building exercises like handstand push-ups while Charlotte worked with us one at a time on the horse. They even had handles for the ground! Charlotte also had us stand in all

directions while the horse walked around in circles.

She helped us train our new canter horse, Bunny. My favorite part was when we got to get up on Bunny and do the first set of compulsories. My club and I all learned so many new exercises that day. Another of my favorite parts was when we got to help train Diamond Bar’s new horse, Karen. Overall, this clinic was a very memorable and worthwhile experience.

Charlotte Kantel and Jacqueline Lobdell, like all vaulters, had to try their balance skills in various locations such as the beach in Santa Barbara.

Kelley HollyWith each new opportunity we run the

risk of learning something new – of ex-panding our current wealth of knowledge and thus requiring ourselves to modify our established responses. On April 11 and 12, 14 equine and 19 human participants experienced this truism at the Yossi Mar-tonovich clinic in Petaluma, California. With Yossi’s guidance and skilled, gentle, yet highly effective techniques we laughed, we learned, we struggled, we succeeded and we shared.

Each horse and handler came to the clinic with a different level of experience and each went away with a whole new array of exercises and skills to help them progress to the next level of horseman-ship. Some participants experienced a first formal riding lesson. Others had years of formal training but all enjoyed the day and came away with a much clearer un-derstanding of the important sequences necessary for successful horse training

clear: “Impulsion is the kind of activity in the haunches that increases the articulation of the joints. If the judges want to encour-age more impulsion and engagement, judges should praise correct rhythm and balance and add a request for more activity but without speed. To engage your horse on any level of his training, create self-carriage, increase the activity, diminish the speed and you will be rewarded by engagement.”

How do we know when our vaulting horses work well? Definitely not by look-ing for faster and more extended gaits (which might be the current fashion, but helps neither the horse nor the vaulter in their performance.)

We recognize the correct work simply by using common sense and good horse-manship when our horses carry themselves in good balance, and work calmly on the circle in a true gait.

A horse, which is working calmly and rhythmically in a true gait, will be a steady, soft and safer horse – a great vaulting partner! This horse will continue to improve physically and mentally and will stay healthy for many years (and should receive excellent horse scores in the competition ring.)

Understanding “Forward”

Yossi MartonovichRecently, at the Horse Score Panel

at the AVA convention, I heard panelists comment that a certain horse, which we watched on the video screen performing at a vaulting competition, should be mov-ing more “forward”. Since the horse was cantering very nicely and calmly on the circle and the vaulter seemed to be doing a very good job, I asked myself, “Why would anyone want the horse to go more forward? What could be the reason?”

In training, I ask my horses to go “more forward,” in certain situations: • If the horse is working lazily with not

enough activity, I send him “forward” momentarily in a faster and lively gait to wake him up.

• As an exercise I extend his gaits to stretch his limbs and body.

• When the horse displays disobedient behavior (and it happens mostly un-der saddle) such as balking, or even showing his/her intent to buck or rear, without hesitation, for disciplinary reasons, I send him “forward”, most of the time in an extended trot to reinstall his urge to go forward.Unfortunately many dressage riders,

instructors and even judges are overus-ing the word “forward” without really understanding what it means and are push-ing horses to go faster and faster.

“ The contemporary fashion for more and more speed is a nightmare for the horse’s body and a sure method to de-stroy the balance and the purity of gaits. Therefore, rushing horses are not going

forward,” stated Charles de Kunffy, the renowned author, clinician and FEI dres-sage judge.

Gustav Steinbrecht (1808 - 85) who was considered by many as the father of dressage in Germany writes in his remark-able book “The Gymnasium of the Horse”: “As the first main principle of the art of riding I urge every rider to “ride your horse forward and set it straight!” When I say riding forward I do not mean driving the horse forward in the fastest and most extended gait, but rather for the rider to

take care to maintain an active thrust of the hindquarters in all exercises.”

Mr. Charles de Kunffy is known throughout the world as an

author, lecturer, coach and judge (USEF I; FEI C). He explains it as: “To be sure, cor-rect training should aim at the flexibility and strengthening of the joints, etc., and slowing the rhythm of the horse’s motion is essential to achieve that. When we ask the horse to go forward, our “drive” needs to create more activity in the haunches, not speed. Running and speed are the opposite of engagement.”

How do we know when our vaulting horses work well? Definitely not by looking for faster and more extended gaits...

To help vaulting become a harmoni-ous combination of horse and vaulter we need to improve the horse’s balance by shifting the horse’s natural tendency to carry its weight on the forehand to carrying more of the weight on the haunches while maintaining and increasing the activity of its hind legs. Most of this training should be done with good riding. Mr. de Kunffy explains, “In other words, the art of rid-ing is the stride-by-stride rebalancing of the horse by half-halting, which tells the horse’s front to wait for the haunches to reach deeper and the pelvis to fold under. We want active, well engaged haunches. The activity of the hindquarters should be inspired by driving aids but with reduction of speed so the horse can experience the efficiencies of motion. This motion results from increased articulation of joints, yet with slowing of the speed.”

Another word, which is misunderstood and misused, is the word “impulsion”. De Kunffy’s explanation of impulsion is very

Martonovich Clinicand conditioning. For the second time this clinic was hosted by Tambourine Farm with the help of an AVA Horse Education Grant.

This fantastic experience gave us all yet another reason to value our AVA mem-bership and gained a couple of potential future vaulting horses and longeurs. The

new members who joined the AVA as a result of this clinic eagerly anticipate the upcoming competition season to reap the rewards of this off-season training. At the end of the weekend everyone shared con-tact information, made arrangements to get together and practice and planned for the next opportunity to change.

Kim KaylorOn March 13th, 14th, and 15th, Oak

Hills Vaulters and Technique Equestrian Vaulting Club made quite a showing at the annual Utah Horse Expo. The expo draws more than ten thousand people each year.

Equine demonstrations are a big part of the expo and crowds were treated to three vaulting performances over the three-day event. It was a great chance for our sea-soned vaulters to show their skills and for our newer vaulters to try performing.

A booth with pictures, a slide show, a video from the 2008 National Champi-onships, issues of Vaulting World, and of course smiling and friendly vaulters was sponsored by Technique. Some expo goers remarked. “Oh, vaulting!” While others commented, “No way! People really do that on horses?” Our favorite remark was made by a well-known Utah trainer who surprised us all when he said, “How do I get that at my barn?” Quite a conversation and many phone calls followed.

Technique also offered two barrel classes in a small round pen area where kids and adults climbed on a barrel and received coaching on a few of the simpler vaulting moves. Lots of smiles and giggles were witnessed and many cell phones snapped pictures of those atop the barrels. It was a great weekend and we are sure next year’s expo will contain another vaulting invasion!

Carolyn ConnerFor the second year in a row, six vault-

ing clubs (Elkhorn, Gold Rush, Morning Star, Tambourine, UC Davis and Willow Tree) from Region II put on a vaulting demonstration for the University of Cali-fornia at Davis “Picnic Day” on Saturday April 18th. We were asked back by popular demand even though the UC Davis vault-ing club has not been active in 2009.

Morning Star brought Dillenger, Spar-ticus and Tanita, Tambourine brought Tank and Sadie and Elkhorn brought Kelly.

For almost a full hour, vaulters per-formed compulsories, freestyles, doubles and team freestyles on horses and on a barrel in the spacious covered arena. Marianne Rose was the very informative and knowledgeable commentator as Russ Hobby from Tambourine operated the boom box to entertain and educate the sizeable crowd. After the demonstration several vaulters stayed to answer questions and to let kids pet the horses.

Since so many horses will be traveling to Kentucky this year, a reminder of the importance of checking out your trailer is in order. Please remember to do all this checking well before your planned trip. Don’t wait until the day you begin your trip or even the day before. Parts may have to be ordered and work done. Give yourself enough time to fix any problems that might come up.

9-POINT TRAILER SAFETY CHECK-LIST H. Kent SundlingPERFORM A VISUAL INSPECTION

Before each trip, perform a visual check of your entire trailer. Look under the trailer for anything out of place or broken. Look for cracked welds, loose wires, and missing parts and bolts. If you have a steel trailer, look for rust. Some surface rust on the frame is normal, but if the sheet metal rusts through, repair it immediately. Check your fenders, as they seem to take the most abuse from posts and mailboxes or even a blown tire.CHECK THE FLOOR AND DOORS

Imagine the horror of your horse fall-ing through the trailer floor or jumping out of an open door while you’re driving down the highway. Avoid these nightmare scenarios by checking floorboards for rot or breaks – replace bad boards. Regularly pull out the floor mats to clean and dry the floor. Every year apply sealer on wooden floorboards to extend their life. Aluminum floors can corrode, too, and need to be cleaned as often as wooden ones.CHECK WIRES, LIGHTS, AND BRAKES

Plug your trailer into your tow vehicle. Make sure the plugs match and that all the lights work correctly. Then check the brake operation. Drive forward at a slow speed and manually apply the trailer brake controller. Next, make sure your brake controller is adjusted properly. Your trailer should stop with your tow vehicle. If it drags or pushes your vehicle, the brake controller needs adjusting. Check wiring where you can see it. Perform normal maintenance on brakes.CHECK THE HITCH

It’s amazing how many trailer ac-cidents result from an unlatched hitch or a wrong size ball. Before you hitch up, lightly grease the coupler’s ball socket.

Check the coupler latch and springs (if the hitch has them). The coupler should work freely, making it easy to connect and disconnect your trailer.CHECK THE CHAINS

Safety chains are designed to keep your trailer from breaking away from your tow vehicle and going into traffic. Make sure your safety chains are the cor-rect length and rating. Adjust the safety chains to hold your trailer first if it comes unhooked, so you can use the trailer brake controller in your cab to slow the trailer under your control. Cross the safety chains under the coupler. Chains can “catch” the trailer tongue if the tongue comes unhooked.CHECK THE BREAKAWAY CABLE AND BATTERY

The breakaway cable must be at-tached to your tow vehicle. It’s designed to apply the trailer brakes immediately if your trailer becomes separated from your tow vehicle. The Emergency Breakaway System, when activated, must bring an unhooked trailer to a complete stop and set the brakes for 15 minutes. For this system to be operational, the breakaway battery must be fully charged and connected, and the breakaway switch must be function-ing correctly. Don’t loop the safety cable over the ball. In some crashes the ball can break, and the EBS won’t engage. If your trailer unhooks, your safety chains break, and your EBS stops your trailer, keep in mind that you have less than 15 minutes to black or chock your trailer to secure it.CHECK THE TIRES AND WHEELS

Invest in a good tire gauge. Check the tire pressure on all tires on your trailer and tow vehicle, including spare tires. (One good gauge is the Pressure Pro; 800/959-3505; www.advantagepressurepro.com.) Proper pressure will greatly increase tire life and help avoid blowouts plus it’ll boost fuel economy. Visually check all tires for uneven wear, which can be a sign of other problems such as a bent axle. Make sure the lug nuts are tight – especially if you’ve recently bought new trailer tires or wheels. Aluminum wheels need lug nuts checked more often than steel wheels as they ex-pand and contract with the temperature. Make sure your tires have at least one-quarter inch of tread. To check, place a penny upside-down in the tread. If you see

all of Lincoln’s head, get new tires. Check tires for dry rot, especially if they haven’t been used for a while. Perform normal maintenance on wheel bearings.CHECK THE JACK

Invest in a good bottle jack for your trailer and tow vehicle. The drive-on ramp jacks for trailers are safe and fast. Before you leave, inspect the trailer jack for any bending, cracking, or broken parts. Check the oil level on hydraulic jacks and check hoses for leaks. Make sure the jack oper-ates smoothly.APPLY SAFETY REFLECTORS

The law requires trailers to sport re-flective tape. As a responsible horse owner you should also invest in “caution horses” reflective signs. Large reflective horse decals are also recommended, as they’re highly visible. (One good source for all reflective products is Caution Horses: 800/970-0529; www.cautionhorses.com.)This article originally appeared in The Trail Rider, March 2009. He taught the kids, I only helped. He taught me a lot about horses and about patience, caring and dedication. We shared the work and joy of vaulting.

Pegasus - 1960? - 2009

Pegasus gave confidence to an entire generation of vaulters, including myself. I doubt I’d be where I am today without the kind, ever forgiving and wonderful Peg. I miss him already.

Gretchen Golightly and her husband, Wayne Gallop cared for Peg these last few years. She mailed me a bit of his mane and a bag of dried flowers from the field where he enjoyed his retirement and now rests.

“We had the special privilege of his company and the honor of caring for such a famous horse. I included the pretty pasture flowers so you can imagine the nice place where he decided to bask in the sun and have his last nap. It was truly a lovely day and he soaked up the whole afternoon of it.”

Peg is sleeping with Fanny, Gretchen’s former vaulting horse. They both lived to be over 40. Think of the vaulting stories they are sharing!

1981-2009 Patti Skipton

I first saw Holly in a large pasture with a dozen other horses. She was pigeon toed, and had a huge hay belly. Her docked tail was scraggly and completely black from tarweed, as was her tangled mane. Another well-known vaulting club had already re-jected her as a vaulting prospect, but I had no previous experience with draft horses and thought she was wonderful! We took Holly home for a trial period. It turned out that she was not really broken to ride or longe and she was afraid to canter! She had previously been a carthorse and only allowed to trot. Using all the jumps and barrels in the arena, I constructed a very large round pen in which to teach Holly to canter. For some unknown reason, Holly didn’t bother to break through this rickety circle, but decided that cantering in a circle wasn’t that scary or difficult. She was on her way to becoming a great vaulting horse!

During that trial period, Holly did decide that she didn’t care for pipe pens and hit the front of hers with her chest. After breaking all the welds holding the pen together, she went out for a run on the lawn! At that point my husband suggested (rather strongly) that I return her to her owner. But, I was convinced that Holly was a rare find and talked him out of it!

Holly continued to prove quick to learn and willing to work. When summer came around we took her to Nationals 1989, in Ventura, CA. The first night there we found out that Holly also didn’t care for stalls. I received a call at the motel around midnight to let me know that she had removed the door to her stall and was wandering around the fairgrounds. Other than being claustrophobic, Holly was a star that first year, carrying the Bronze Women’s Individual Champion, as well as the Preliminary Pas de Deux Champions.

Vaulting seemed to be Holly’s calling in life. She didn’t care much for a lot of at-tention from the kids, and was always hard to catch, but once she was in the arena, it was all business. Before too long Holly was carrying the Monte Vista teams as well as all the canter individuals to various

championships which enabled the Monte Vista A-Team the honor of representing the USA at the World Equestrian Games in Holland.

In 1993, Holly was the first AVA “Horse of the Year” recipient. She received the honor again in 1994.

Shortly after Holly’s A-Team wins, she had an unusual injury that resulted in severe nerve damage to her swallowing mechanism. Because of paralysis in her throat, she was unable to swallow prop-erly or cough. As I cried, my vet told me that there was no treatment that could repair nerve damage. “If she doesn’t get pneumonia,” he said, “she may survive as a pasture pet, but no working her at all.” The news was devastating, but the vet promised that he and his wife would pray for Holly. Every practice the vaulters and I prayed for her as well.

One day, several weeks later, I was catching a horse in the pasture when I heard Holly cough! I called Dr Meyers to come

examine her and we were all surprised to find her swallowing normally and cough-ing when needed. Before long she was able to start working again! From then on, Holly was known as our miracle horse. I believe that God healed her to show the vaulters how much He loved them and was concerned about their needs.

Holly went on to carry many vaulters and teams of all levels. She was used by international competitors, including Thomas Fisback who won the first Santa Cruz CVI on her. After vaulting on Holly at our camp, Eric Martonovich went home and convinced his parents to buy their first Belgian! When Devon Maitozo needed experience on a “big” horse, Emma sent him to practice on Holly. Holly’s steadi-ness and dependability instilled confi-dence and trust in vaulters of all ages and experience!

In her later years, Holly started a new career in therapeutic vaulting. She learned to stand completely still while vaulters

were “loaded” on from wheelchairs. She carried riders with all forms of disabilities, including those wearing braces and using breathing machines. Literally hundreds of riders with little or no mobility were able to sit tall on her broad back and let her be their legs. Although there were no ribbons won, the impact that Holly made on those lives is immeasurable.

As Holly aged, she was retired from steady work, but she was always willing when there was a particular need with the therapeutic classes. In between times, she kept herself busy bossing the other horses around and keeping them in line. Occasionally she and I went for trail rides – her broad back was the best for bareback riding!

Holly was 28 years old when she left us – ancient for a draft horse! She kept her great spirit and courage to the end, eating a pan of grain while waiting for the vet to arrive! She will be missed by countless vaulters who are better people today for the confidence that they gained in partnership with her. I will miss you Miss Holly, my partner, my teacher and my friend!

I was a bit nervous because I had never been away from home by myself for a week. It didn’t really matter though, because soon the Warm Beach Spring Vaulting Camp in Stanwood, Washington felt like home. I had fun the whole week of April 5-10 and everyone was really nice to me. I met new people like Camille from Cascade Vaulters and others who were at the Warm Beach horse camp while we were at vaulting camp. Three of the boys who went to riding camp had come all the way over from Korea to go to this camp.

Julia Overton, one of my best friends, and I were fortunate enough to be roommates in a room all to ourselves. Our counselor, Danielle Rynning, got to stay with the trotters. I’m surprised she got any sleep.

The first day of camp our breakfast was waffles with strawberries and whiped cream. Yummy! Unfortunately we ran right after breakfast. We stretched and went out to the arena and did a lot of vaulting – compulsories and freestyles. Sometimes we did well. Sometimes we fell off. (Like that never happens in vaulting!) We also did intentionally spectacular mounts and dismounts.

We didn’t just do vaulting. We also did games on horseback. To everybody’s surprise, including mine, I was one of the best ones at doing “capture the flag.” I had ridden dressage for six years so I suppose that helped a bit. I rode a horse named Chopaka. I wanted to call him Chewbacca but he kept pinning his ears at me every time I called him that. He was quite happy every time we got the flag though. He was a bit grumpy in the beginning. He lightened up to me in the end. I think he actually started to like me.

On Wednesday night we did a dinner-trail ride. We had a bit of excitement because one of our counselors was riding a horse that hadn’t been ridden since last summer. You see the problem there. The horse was a bit energetic and excited but, after a while, he quieted down. I really enjoyed not being in the arena and just being free to do stuff. I got to know everybody around me more then I had been able to before. In my opinion, it’s a lot more comfortable to be on top of a horse than sitting in a chair, so it was quite relaxing.

We ran and stretched every morning, vaulted and then did electives like games on horseback or using the high zip line, climbing wall, and high ropes course. For crafts we got old horseshoes, cleaned them up, spray-painted them black, white, or blue and customized them with other colors.

At night we sang songs and our counselors told stories about their lives and told how they were affected or changed in great ways. Then it was off to bed.

On Friday we did a show for our parents. Julia, Kaleb, one of our flyers on the Warm Beach C-Team, and I did part of our team freestyle for the crowd.

After the show Samantha Smith, an AVA Gold medalist and clinician ,gave us a clinic. Her expertise is in the compulsories and she is wonderful at teaching them. All my compulsories went up a notch or two, as did the rest of the vaulters’ in my class.

By the end of the week I was dead on my feet. I’m sure all the other people at camp agree with me on this. But it was well worth it. I made new friends, including a grumpy horse named Chewbacca. My freestyle and my compulsories improved and we all had a fun and rewarding time. Shelby Janes is 13 years old from Monroe, Washington. She vaults with Warm Beach Vaulters.

Wendy WareThe winner of our T-shirt and summer camp slogan is Nancy Stevens-

Brown with: Elevate Your Horsemanship...Vault! A close second for a fun vaulter T-shirt was from Priscilla Faulkner: You’ll Never Believe What I Can Do On A Horse...Vault! Both of these capture our focus on our most important teammate, our horse and speaks to riding instructors, trainers, horsemanship program managers and their enthusiastic students whom we want to draw into our sport.

The T-shirt design will be posted on the AVA website. A huge thank you to all of you who submitted terrific entries. Don’t be surprised if your idea shows up sometime in the future.

Recreational Vaulting Coach Certification CHA Press Release

The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) is now offering the Recreational Vaulting Coach Certification as a stand-alone certification clinic. This clinic was designed in conjunction with the American Vaulting Association (AVA). Prior to approval of the change by the CHA Board of Di-rectors in March of this year, it was required by the participant to either hold an instructor certification or attend a “standard equivalency test-out” prior to the vaulting clinic. Since so many excellent vault-ing coaches throughout North America do not teach group riding, but only vaulting, it seemed unneces-sary to require this certification.

The Recreational Vaulting Coach Certification Clinic is a 24-hour clinic consisting of four work-shops on subjects such as Teaching Techniques for Coaches and Selection, Training, and Care of the Vaulting Horse. Participants will also be asked to teach a minimum of two lessons both on the vaulting barrel and the horse and take a written examination. Visit http://www.cha-ahse.org/cert.htm#vaulting to find out how to host one or attend one to get ready for your summer vaulting lessons.

The purpose of the Certified Horsemanship As-sociation (CHA) is to promote excellence in safety and education for the benefit of the horse industry. CHA certifies riding instructors, recreational vault-ing coaches, barn managers, drivers and trail guides; accredits equestrian facilities; publishes educational equine manuals and hosts regional and international educational conferences that are open to the public. For more information please visit www.CHA-ahse.org or call toll free 1-800-399-0138.

Great Falls/Topaz Spring Fest

My horse’s feet are as swift as rolling thunder, he carries me away from all my fears,And when the world threatens to fall asunder, his mane is there to wipe away my tears.

How Cute is YOUR Horse?

The USEF’s Club Equestrian is the community for people who love horses – where members connect to share a common passion for the most beautiful animal on Earth, the horse. It has lots of videos, blogs, photos, news and other interesting pages.

There is an ongoing photo section including monthly contests where you can post pictures of your horse. The current contest is “Cutest Foal.” The Gallery includes everything from “learning to jump” to “swimming” to “riding and whatnot.” For the contest go to: www.clubequestrian.com/photos/contest/may_2009/about.aspx. Log in to ClubEquestrian.com using your username and password. Once logged in, you can click on “Enter Photo Contest” from your “Tack Room.” Entries for the Contest will be taken from the first day of the month until the end of the day on the 19th of the month.

Thomas and Craig Coburn, your AVA web team, have been working to freshen up the AVA website. Check it out! The new Ken-tucky micro-site gives you everything you need to know about upcoming Kentucky events. It will be updated often.

The ‘See Vaulting’ video section is outstanding and new video links are being added daily. Thanks to those who sent in links for the breaking news area allowing us to update the Newspaper and TV Media Room. We need more!

All our AVA Lifetime Members now have their names listed in the Alumni sec-tion. As a challenge, see if you notice which pictures throughout the website have been changed. Please keep sending more pictures my way!
