Love Family Piano Registration Packet – Summer 2014 & 2014-2015 School Year
Love Family Piano lessons are seriously fun! We are committed to providing weekly music experiences that will inspire and excite. Over the past year, we have seen tremendous growth, and we believe this is thanks to an arts-driven community with parents like you, who support your children in music. We believe the programs we offer are one-of-a-kind, and will prepare your kids for a lifelong love of music. Please carefully read this packet as new lesson and camp options are now available. We are thrilled to start a new and seriously fun year with you at Love Family Piano!
Individual Piano Lessons (Ages 7+) Summer 2014 semester tuition includes 6 lessons, 2
camp classes, and 1 studio recital. 2014-2015 school year tuition includes 30 lessons, 3
ensemble week lessons, 6 master classes, and 2 recitals.
During individual lessons, students will prepare repertoire that challenges, and inspires. Students will be active participants in their own music education, and will always be asked for input on music selection and lesson focus. In addition to general music theory, technique, and performance, lessons may include composition, improvisation, and more, according to the student and parents’ desires. The 2014 summer recital will be a pop showcase, featuring the coolest music of today with fun background tracks! Our fall 2014 recital will be a compilation of classical, contemporary, and Christmas pieces. The spring 2015 recital, Just Duet, will feature upbeat duet and trio selections. Students will play with family members or friends, dressed in their favorite sporting attire, ready to pump it up! Master classes and ensemble week lessons are monthly opportunities for individual lesson students to interact with their peers in meaningful learning experiences. Ensemble week classes (groups of 4-6 students) will focus on group performance activities using our brand new weighted keyboard lab, much like jazz, rock, or pop bands would work together to create music. Master classes (10-20 students) are geared more toward individual performance and listening (generally in preparation for upcoming recitals or festivals), theory mastery, total musicianship, composer studies, and music history. Our master class in December will be a service recital for all students to perform at the Homestead, Rexburg’s local retirement center. Apart from time spent individually with the instructor, all lessons include Music Tech Time (MTT). This technology-based learning will assist in the reinforcement of skills learned in lessons. iPads, computers, midi software, and other technology are used for MTT. Lesson Location: The home of David and Denae Love, 80 North 5th West, Rexburg, Idaho.
Package A: 60 Minute Partner Rotation Lessons o Recommended for Beginners—Late Elementary Students o This package represents the most common lesson type among our students. Two students will overlap
private lesson time with MTT, and then switch places. Occasionally, when an activity is more beneficial as a partner event (duets, theory lessons, or games), students will be instructed together, and learn from one another, with teacher direction. The majority of lessons however, will be evenly split with 30 minutes of private instruction and 30 minutes of MTT.
2 WWW.REXBURGMUSIC.COM | REGISTRATION |2014-2015
Package B: 90 Minute Partner Rotation Lessons o Level 2B+ or 7th Grade+ (or by recommendation) o This package definitely gives you the biggest bang for your buck, and is the preferred lesson length by
most teachers today for students who are already reading notes fluently and practicing regularly. As this lesson length allows us to dive deeper into technique and artistry, we highly recommend this option for students interested in excelling in festivals, composition, notation, theory mastery, and performance. With the extra 15 minutes of private lesson time, we are able to accomplish nearly double the amount of work compared to the traditional 30 minute lesson. Similar to the 60 minute partner rotations in package A, these 90 minute partner lessons will primarily be spent with a 45 minute private lesson, and 45 minutes of MTT. Partner activities will be used from time to time, when appropriate.
o While most students in this category are capable and excited to spend up to 45 minutes working on MTT projects and activities, this tech time may be adjusted according to the student’s needs and desires.
Package A/B Combo: 75 Minute Partner Rotation Lessons
o Recommended for sibling pairs at differing skill levels o In this rotation, one student will take a 30 minute lesson and the other will receive 45 minutes of private
instruction. For the younger student, in addition to MTT, 15 minutes may be spent using other provided materials and independent games to practice skills and reinforce lesson concepts. Partner activities and instruction will take place on occasion, but less frequently than in other rotation options.
Group Piano Lessons (Ages 7+) Beginning fall semester. 2014-2015 school year tuition includes 33 lessons, 6 master classes, and 2 recitals. Recommended for all ages and skill levels. Groups of 4-6 students will be formed and scheduled
based on skill level and student availability. Group lessons may be taken in addition to, or in replace
of individual lessons. Love Family Piano is Rexburg’s source for the most seriously fun lessons in town! Nothing makes piano more fun than doing it with friends, and creating ensemble music that isn’t possible individually. Beginning in summer 2014, we will have a piano keyboard lab ready for groups of 4-6 students to rock n’ roll together! These teacher-directed, tech-savvy group lessons will teach the same foundational principles learned during private instruction, and will also include a wide variety of ensemble work. While mastering note-reading, rhythm, technique, and theory, students will work together to perform band-style selections complete with percussion and multi-instrument sounds. Students will gain teamwork skills, develop a strong sense of inner-pulse, become more proficient in accompaniment skills, and make new friends! Composition and improvisation will be major components of group lessons. Lesson Location: The home of David and Denae Love, 80 North 5th West, Rexburg, Idaho.

Summer Camps (Grades K-12) Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music Camp (Grades K-6)
By popular demand, Quaver’s Marvelous World of Music Camp returns this year, bigger and better than ever. Now, with one more day of camp and more time to play each week. Grade K-6 campers meet once each week for 75 minutes to experience music, not only through excellent instruction, but also through games such as Rhythm Beach Ball, the Musical Alphabet Relay,
and Grand Staff Twister. Quaver Music camp may best be described as “Music Theory Meets Bill Nye the Science Guy.” The final day of camp, campers’ knowledge will be assessed through “The Amazing Music Race” at Porter Park. The first and last days of this camp have been specially arranged to include piano students who are not participating in camp as a replacement for their monthly master class. Camp Location: Madison Library Community Room, 73 N Center St, Rexburg, ID 83440. The last day of Quaver camp will be held at Porter Park in Rexburg, weather permitting. Camp Dates: Mondays, June 9 – July 14. Camp Times: 1:15-2:30 or 2:45-4:00.
GarageBand Composition Camp (Level 2B or higher) This high tech camp will prepare campers to write music for film and create pop and rock songs through the multi- level tracking software, GarageBand. All students who attend will have access to their own iPad while in the class. After 6 weeks of hour-long fun, students who participate will leave camp with their own portfolio of fresh and fun original compositions. Compositions will be published by CD or private YouTube channel with parent permission. Students who do not have access to an iPad will be provided one by LFP for camp use only. Students who have access to their own iPad will benefit by bringing their own in order to work on the same compositions at home and at camp. Camp Location: The home of David and Denae Love, 80 North 5th West, Rexburg, Idaho. Camp Dates: TBD Camp Times: TBD

Piano Band (Level 1 or higher) What’s more fun than classical/pop crossovers with Piano and Cello? FIVE keyboards, of course, rocking out to hit tunes such as Happy by Pheryl Williams and Coldplay’s Paradise. During 6 weekly, hour-long sessions, students will demonstrate their ensemble skills in their final music video debut recital held in July. While this camp is very fun, it’s also a great place to learn a new skill and make friends! Love Family Piano will have five brand new, fully weighted keyboards to use in group lessons and small camps like Piano Band. Invite your friends! Camp Location: The home of David and Denae Love, 80 North 5th West, Rexburg, Idaho. Camp Dates: TBD Camp Times: TBD
Festivals Students are encouraged to take advantage of as many performance opportunities as possible. Festivals are a great way for students to set and work toward meaningful goals, improve performance abilities, and receive helpful feedback from professionals in the field of piano teaching.
UVMTA Festivals Idaho’s Upper Valley Music Teacher’s Association (UVMTA) offers three festivals each year. Piano solo and duet festivals are held in November and April. A composition festival is also held in February, giving budding composers a chance to feature their creative works.
LFP Festivals Love Family Piano offers piano festivals in November and April to coincide with UVMTA festivals. LFP festivals are perfect for student who are too young, or too new to participate in UVMTA festivals. They are a great, nonthreatening eay to introduce new pianists to a sometimes intimidating event.

Love Family Piano
Policy and Procedures – 2014-2015 By registering as a student with Love Family Piano, both parents and students agree to respect and abide by all studio policies and procedures. Our policies and procedures are designed to ensure the effectiveness of each student’s learning experience and protect all stakeholders’ best interests. Love Family Piano reserves the right to modify policies and procedures as needed. These changes, if any, will be published in newsletters and announced via email.
General Information Individual and group lessons are offered to students ages 7+ in 30, 45, or 60 minute weekly time slots. In addition to private lessons, students will come 30-45 minutes early, or stay after, for Music Tech Time (MTT). Individual lesson students will be paired with a partner (which may be a sibling), and will come and leave together, to limit the amount of transition distraction during lessons. Partners will switch between MTT and lesson instruction, and on occasion participate in partner activities. Expectations The Teacher
Strives to make music lessons seriously fun. Encourages excellence in practice and skill development through positive reinforcement and best teaching
practices. Ensures each lesson is an educational experience. Continues professional and musical development. Determines (with student) the music to learn and home practice expectations. Helps student prepare for recitals and festivals. Communicates with parents on a regular basis.
The Student
Chooses to make the study of music and piano a priority. Maintains a positive attitude. Is willing to experience different genres of music. Practices, as instructed during lessons, each day. Records practice time daily in student binder. Brings necessary books and materials to each lesson. Arrives on time to lessons.
The Parent/Adult Student
Reads, understands, and follows studio policies and procedures. Checks and reads studio emails at least weekly. Supports daily practice and student progress with encouragement. Practices with the student (if necessary). Monitors student’s progress—personally and online. Provides timely transportation for student(s). Respects the lesson time of other students with prompt pick-up, and concise communication during lesson time. Pays tuition on time, in one of three methods:
o In full at the beginning of the school year (Due September 1, 2014) or o At the beginning of each semester (Due September 1, 2014 and January 1, 2015) or o The first day of each month (September 1, 2014 – May 1, 2015)

Provides at least 24 hours’ notice if a student must miss a lesson. Notifies the teacher as soon as possible in case of emergency or illness. Understands that make-up credits will only be given with 24+ hours’ notice, are not guaranteed to be made up,
and expire at the end of each semester. Is responsible for registering students for recitals, master classes, ensemble lessons, and make-up lessons online.
Love Family Piano
Establishes tuition and dates to be paid. Sends monthly billing statements and newsletters via email. Provides a username and password to access up-to-date billing statements, and other student information online. Schedules all studio events. Provides regular teacher training and professional development opportunities.
Student Books & Music Student books and music will be chosen by the teacher, with student input. These materials are provided by the teacher, and billed to the parent’s online account. If the parent opts to not purchase an assigned book, it must be returned within one week with a note attached, still in new condition. The primary curriculum used for the first several years of individual lessons is Faber's Piano Adventures or Alfred’s Premier Piano Course series. More advanced students will be assigned repertoire on a case-by-case basis. Other materials are provided with the registration fee (See Registration Fee). Registration Fee An annual registration fee is due August 1st for each school year. This cost: confirms student registration, reserves a spot with Love Family Piano, and provides studio and student materials. These materials may include, (but are not limited to): Music Tech Time equipment, iPads and computers, apps, software and games, recital programs, supplemental exercises, and handouts, incentives, treats, rental fees, piano maintenance and more. This cost may also cover: student recording CDs, and studio activity refreshments. We invest this fee in buying new music, and replacing old music for student use in our lending library and store inventory. This fee does not include student books. Tuition & Payment Individual lesson tuition includes private lessons, Music Tech Time, master classes, studio recitals, and some field trips. Group lesson tuition includes group lessons, master classes, studio recitals, and some field trips. Students are encouraged to attend all studio activities. Tuition is not prorated for students who chose to not participate in any of the above-mentioned events. Tuition is to be paid on time, in one of three methods:
o In full at the beginning of the school year (Due September 1, 2014) o At the beginning of each semester (Due September 1, 2014 and January 1, 2015) or o The first day of each month (September 1, 2014 – May 1, 2015).
The teacher reserves the right to terminate lessons if payment is not made by the due date. A $30 late payment fee will be charged to accounts not paid by the 5th of each month. Tuition may be paid in cash, or check made out to Love Family Piano (See Also Online Payment). Monthly post-dated checks may also be submitted at the beginning of the school year, to be held by Love Family Piano, and deposited each month. This has been found to be the most punctual, worry and fee-free method of payment. Bounced checks will result in a $30 charge to your studio account.
7 WWW.REXBURGMUSIC.COM | REGISTRATION |2014-2015
Online Payment Payments may be made online (logged in to your personal account via PayPal). An online payment processing fee of 3.5% will be charged to your account each time you make an online payment, so you can calculate this and include it in your payment ahead of time, or you can simply wait for the fee to be charged to your account on the following invoice. Some families find the $3.50 on every $100 spent worth the convenience of saved time. You may also set up your account to make automatic monthly recurring payments. To avoid these fees, please make payments with cash or check. Calendar & Schedule Lesson times and events can be found by logging on to the studio website, www.RexburgMusic.com, and entering your personal account. It is the parent’s responsibility to stay up-to-date on the studio calendar by visiting the website. In addition, events are usually posted on our Facebook page. The weekly lesson schedule is determined after the registration window closes. All students are scheduled at once according to availability calendars submitted with registration forms. Availability calendars should be completely filled in, and periodically updated with Denae if your availability changes. Lesson days and times may need to be rearranged in rare cases, and we would like an idea of possibilities before contacting you for a change. Group classes are formed and scheduled as soon as four students of similar skill level and age register. A day and time will be found to meet the availability of class members. New classes will be added to accommodate student interest. Missed Lessons & Rescheduling Students who notify the teacher 24+ hours in advance of a foreseen absence may receive a make-up lesson; it is not guaranteed. Students who need to miss due to a family emergency or illness, and notify the teacher as soon as possible, will be considered for a make-up at the teacher’s convenience. Due to the teacher’s limited availability, students who fail to notify their teacher of an absence, for any reason, will not receive a make-up lesson. Please be courteous and respectful to the time of the teacher and other students. Most make-up lessons use twice as much time as a scheduled lesson—a sacrifice the teacher is willing to make for the students’ progress, on occasion. When a student anticipates a future absence, Denae will notify all students via text message (you must subscribe to our texting service to receive these texts) of the available time. To schedule a make-up lesson, log in to your account online and register for the make-up lesson of your choice. Due to scheduling restraints, make-up lesson availability is limited to lesson cancellations. Scheduling priority will be given to students who notify Denae of absences with 24 hours’ notice to enable rescheduling for other students. The 2014-2015 studio calendar for individual lessons consists of the following number of total potential lesson weeks:
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday 34 36 36 35 34
Three of these weeks will be used for ensemble lessons. Available ensemble lesson times will be posted online at least two weeks ahead of time, for which parents may register their students. Ensemble lessons replace regularly scheduled individual lessons. On occasion, the teacher may need to miss a lesson for illness, family emergencies, or other unforeseen situations. The teacher reserves the right to cancel up to two lessons without the obligation to schedule make-ups or issue lesson credit of any kind. Therefore, students are guaranteed 30 private lessons during the school year, but may receive up to 3 bonus lessons. Any missed lesson at the fault of the teacher thereafter will gladly be rescheduled at no cost to the student or parent. Ensemble week lessons and master classes may not be made up. Group classes may not be made up or refunded for any reason. If a student must miss a class, and provides a 24+ hour notice, it may be possible to attend another group’s class that week if there is a space available. Because of the progressive nature of these classes, consistent weekly attendance is necessary for understanding, success and group progression.
8 WWW.REXBURGMUSIC.COM | REGISTRATION |2014-2015
Discontinuation From time to time, some students choose to discontinue lessons. It is hoped that this decision is made thoughtfully, after discussion with the teacher to have a sense of closure between parent, student, and teacher. By signing the 2014-2015 registration form, you are under contract to pay tuition through the entire school year. With this said, we understand that extenuating circumstances may arise. If a student decides to discontinue lessons during the 2014-2015 school year, a written one-month notification must be given (email notification is acceptable) to the teacher. If the student or parent fails to provide this notification, the parent/adult student will be held responsible to pay through the end of the following month. The teacher reserves the right to dismiss a student from lessons due to lack of practice, respect, or interest. Student Safety & Security Student safety is a priority. For the parent’s peace of mind, and to protect our teachers from false accusations, we always ensure that there are at least three people present during individual lessons including: parents, teachers, babysitters, and/or students. Our group lessons and partner lesson systems generally ensure this policy naturally. In rare instances such as a partner being sick, a third person may not be able to be present during an individual lesson. If this is the case, and there is not a third person present, a parent will be invited in to observe the lesson. Please be aware of this policy when dropping your student off for lessons. Communication There are multiple ways to stay connected to the studio. General information regarding lessons, master class, MTT, and other events will be communicated via email. Most information can also be found online at www.RexburgMusic.com and in your personal studio account. If you have questions regarding general studio information including calendar events and
lesson schedules, please make an effort to find it in an email or online first. Afterward, feel free to contact Denae through email
([email protected]), text, or phone call (503-910-7307). To receive text message reminders and notifications, especially regarding make-up lesson openings, please subscribe to our texting service as seen to the left. Another way to stay connected is accepting the invitation to our private Facebook page for students and families, and “liking” us on our public Facebook page. News, photos, and events are posted here frequently. Parent permission is given or denied on the registration form to use student photos and videos on Facebook, the studio website, email newsletters, and other promotional items.
