CEREALS EVENT INFO3

Under the new management of Comexposium and Prysm Group, Cereals has been

re-energised, with features, content and a bustling exhibition to inspire confidence in arable farming’s future.

As a premier agri-tech event, the team quickly realised Cereals needed to focus on emerging technologies this year. The resulting Innovation & Technology Theatre will help visitors learn about how technology can make their farms more productive.

New for 2019, the farmer-requested Conservation Agriculture Theatre will give advice on how sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

Returning this year, the Cereals AHDB Theatre will be opened by agriculture minister Robert Good-will, and will cover strategic initia-tives relevant to arable farmers.

The International Farming Superstars presented by Farmers Weekly will take that strategy into best practice with insights from lead-ing farmers from Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. Cereals 2019 will also include CPD-accredited seminars, guided tours and exhibitor visits all in one place.

Last but not least, there is the hands-on, solutions-based active content at Cereals that is unique to the event, including Working Demos, Cover Crop Drilling, the Syngenta Sprays & Sprayers Arena, Hands Free Hectare, Crop Plots, the Niab Soil Pit, Drone Sprayer Demos and a multitude of learning opportunities and demonstrations on exhibitors’ stands.

A quarter of Cereals exhibitors do not exhibit elsewhere so Cereals

provides a unique opportunity to them. From business consulting services to the latest in equipment, the Cereals 2019 exhibition has the arable farmer’s targeted informa-tional needs covered.

With 400 exhibitors and 20,000 attendees expected, there won’t be a dull moment at Cereals 2019. We hope you will feel the energy and investment in this year’s event.

It is our inaugural edition under new management, so please do reach out and let us know how we are doing. We appreciate your time, consideration and support as we move Cereals forward.

Fixing arable farming’s futureThe Cereals AHDB Theatre sets the arable agenda as it tackles the key issue of the day: Preparing for change – what’s on the horizon?

Join Cereals AHDB Theatre for inspirational insights into arable farming’s future, including Brexit-

proofing, policy-pointers and world market fundamentals.

Targeted sessions will summarise the best advice for arable farmers, capturing the thinking of key decision-makers.

On Wednesday 12 June the morning starts with farm minister Robert Goodwill delivering a keynote speech, before an expert panel considers the big issue – “Preparing for change – what’s on the horizon?” Just some of the topics up for debate are: w Why is agriculture at particular risk from Brexit?w Which farming sectors are set to suffer most?w What will happen to food prices?w How will Brexit affect the agri-food

trade with the EU and other non-EU countries?w How will the Agriculture Bill affect farming?w What is government doing to safeguard UK agriculture?

At noon, the outlook for global markets over the next five years will be considered, before an afternoon panel will discuss methods to up productivity and benchmarking.

Thursday 13 June starts with a global grain market forecast and domestic market outlook for 2019-20, followed by a panel “How resilient is your business?” looking at the factors that need to be monitored for the season ahead and subsequent years. The final Cereals AHDB Theatre session includes a keynote and panel dedicated to integrated pest management.

Explore the full potential of new oilseed rape herbicide Belkar from Corteva Agriscience (426). It pushes the boundary of what’s possible with a new post-emergence spray for broad-leaved weeds, including cleavers, poppy, shepherd’s purse, fumitory and cranesbill, the firm says.

Crucially, Belkar allows growers to see crops establish before investing in crop protection, rather than investing up front in pre-emergence treatments. It is approved for applications this autumn. Also on show will be Inatreq, the first new target site fungicide for cereals in over a decade. It comes at a time when new fungicide solutions will be critical to manage Septoria tritici resistance issues using current chemistries, Corteva explains.

Inatreq provides strong protectant and curative efficacy in wheat against Septoria tritici with good protectant activity on yellow and brown rust. Studies show no cross-resistance from its active ingredient, fenpicoxamid, to other groups of chemistry currently used in cereals.

Cereals is a prime source of technology and innovation to drive the industry forwards

In a major first for Cereals 2019, the event will feature the first ever live drone sprayer demonstrations in the Sprays & Sprayers Arena, co-ordinated by Harper Adams University.

The DJI Agras MG-1S is an octocopter designed for precision variable-rate application of liquid pesticides, fertilisers and herbicides, offering the potential (subject to regulatory approval) of new levels of efficiency and manageability to agriculture.

The MG-1’s powerful propulsion system allows it to carry up to 10kg of liquid payload and treat 0.4-0.6ha (4,000-6,000sq m) in just 10 minutes, and up to 4ha/hour, says DJI Agras. The intelligent spraying system automatically

adjusts output according to the flying speed to avoid pollution and economise operations.

The MG-1 automatically records and remembers its co-ordinates as it makes its way across the field, so if an operation is interrupted – for example due to a depleted battery or need for refilling – it can quickly land and resume flight from the last recorded point. By integrating a microwave radar with the MG-1’s intelligent flight control system, the aircraft can scan the terrain below to keep a constant centimetre-accurate height above crops, while avoiding obstacles, DJI Agras explains.

Demonstrations will be held on both days in the Syngenta Sprays & Sprayers Arena.

New to Cereals 2019, the Innovation & Technology Theatre will present some

of the most innovative suppliers, products and product launches, as well as the newest technologies.

Across the two days, there will be a number of sessions in the Innovation & Technology Theatre (see p18), offering visitors insights into technologies to better meet their farming needs.

Cereals 2019 also features a new spray drone demonstration (see “Drone sprayer first”) and the ever-popular Hands Free Hectare team (see “Hands Free Hectare”).

Precision farming Two companies with precision farming innovations are Hutchinsons and Origin, with the former showcasing the first statistically valid trials showing how precision farming can increase wheat yields by 0.6t/ha and profitability by £99/ha.

By comparing wheat drilled variably according to its Omnia precision farming service, alongside a farm standard rate, and taking the spilt fields to yield, Hutchinsons’ study proved the merit of variable rate drilling for the first time, with costs of production also reduced by as much as £28/t.

Hutchinsons is also launching Terramap, a soil-scanning and mapping service. Using gamma-ray detection to create 800 sampling points/ha, it provides high-definition maps of all common nutrients, pH, soil texture, organic matter and CEC, as well as elevation and plant available water.

“With such a growing level of interest in soils the launch of

TerraMap comes at the perfect time for farmers looking for the next level of accuracy in understanding their soils,” says Hutchinsons precision technology manager Oliver Wood.

Manufactured by Canadian company SoilOptix, the technology is unaffected by soil moisture, compaction, crop cover or cultivation.

Meanwhile, Origin’s SoilQuest and IPF are profiling Rhiza. “Digital agronomy is far broader and more affordable than the precision-farming systems it has mainly been associated with,” says Origin’s head of digital, Simon Beck.

“Our system merely involves logging and automatically transferring georeferenced field-walking observations to your farm records. All you need is a phone or tablet with GPS and the Contour app.” Further precision-farming tools can be added, such as the advanced satellite imagery Plus service costing just over 7kg/ha of ammonium nitrate, it says.

Patrick Dean is delighted to be hosting Cereals again in 2019 – an event that provides an unparalleled opportunity to keep abreast of the latest technical and business matters in arable farming.

Although the challenges are significant, we believe the future remains exciting and our business has continued to evolve since we last hosted Cereals in 2017.

The construction of an additional 90,000cu m irrigation

reservoir has helped improve our water resilience and after the disposal of our pig herd, the subsequent lease of the unit for bed and breakfast pigs has maintained our access to organic fertiliser. Given the free-draining nature of the soils we farm, we see investment in water and organic fertilisers as vital to a sustainable future.

We have also sought to improve business resilience through a collaboration venture

with a local farming and contracting operation. This will see our farmed area more than double to nearly 9,500 acres. Our aim is to generate economies of scale and improve efficiencies, while also creating opportunities for further expansion. In order to realise this, a consistent focus on attention to detail will be more important than ever. A challenge indeed! Alastair Priestley Managing director, Patrick Dean

Which variety will win the prestigious “once in 100 years” Cereals Cup as part of the Centenary celebrations on Niab’s stand (531), where visitors can also find the show’s largest demonstration of winter wheat and winter oilseed rape varieties.

The Cereals Cup rewards agronomic value, market influence and lasting impact, and was first awarded in 1953 to Proctor spring barley. More recent winners include Einstein winter wheat (2005), Pearl winter barley (2004), Claire winter wheat (2001) and Skyfall winter wheat (2015).

The 100-year winner will be revealed at 2.30pm on Wednesday 12 June on Niab’s stand, against a backdrop of nearly 120 crop and variety plots, including current and candidate varieties from the AHDB 2019/20 Recommended List.

Further plots profile the development of yellow rust in the UK, as well as new plant-breeding tools, fresh information on new fungicide chemistry and strategies to protect fungicide efficacy, especially against the key winter wheat disease septoria.

WEED-FREE BEET?

Are your costs what they should be? Have you fully evaluated diversification opportunities? Could your grain marketing be improved? The Cereals Event has answers to these questions and more

Brexit, the Agriculture Bill, labour costs and volatile markets are all set to

impinge on arable profits. But there is plenty of advice

in the Business Zone to help arable enterprises cope – with a multi-pronged approach widely advocated, including the use of robust varieties with good disease resistance, re-focused marketing strategies, collaboration with neighbours, diversification and benchmarking to identify savings.

Fixed-cost fixers Strutt & Parker (302) has smart ways to help farms cut fixed costs by £100/ha or more.

Benchmarking shows top-performing units achieve total labour and power costs of under £300/ha, but the highest-cost farms are almost double that, explains associate director George Badger.

He urges farmers to look at machine capacity. For combining the target should be 70ha per metre of header width, equivalent to 700ha for a 10m header.

Drills should achieve 100ha/m of drill width (600ha for a 6m drill) and sprayers at least 26ha/m of boom width (620+ha for a 24m sprayer). Under-utilised machines could be shared with a neighbour, formally or informally.

Labour is more challenging, since cheap labour can be a false economy, with any cost savings lost in reduced yield.

“The priority should be recruiting the best staff and looking after them to maximise their productivity,” Mr Badger recommends.

SOIL & NUTRITION

FARMERSWEEKLY 31 MAY 2019

16

Top of the agenda – improving soil health is a priority for most farms

Soil systems in sharp focus This year, Cereals visitors will find more advice than ever to help them develop their own farm soil health and crop nutrition plans

Step down and discover a unique perspective of soil structure and cover crop

mixes. The Niab Soil Pit is designed to show farmers what really goes on below ground level and how to tackle some of the most important soil issues.

Good soil health and structure are the basis for any successful crop and it’s a hot topic right now; the launch of the government’s 25-year environment plan has put the subject firmly in the spotlight. Indeed, soil degradation costs at least £1.2bn a year in England and Wales alone, according to the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

The 20m-long, 1.5m-deep pit provides a worm’s eye view of roots and soil structure, offering a unique opportunity to explore the foundations of a farming system and discover the effects of different cropping options on soil structure.

The Niab Soil Pit gives the visitor a greater understanding of the composition of the soil they grow their crops in, and the effect that cropping and mechanisation have on soil health and structure.

w Find more information online at www.cerealsevent.co.uk/the-soil-pit

SMART ROTATIONS Boosting beneficial soil microbes could benefit cropping, according to Kent-based firm PlantWorks (415), which is profiling Smart Rotations biological inoculants at Cereals 2019.

Two particularly important groups of microbes it supplies are arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) – which can keep crops

healthier and significantly improve water and nutrient collection from the soil – and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) – which can fix atmospheric nitrogen and unlock soil-bound phosphorus, allowing subsequent transport to host plants by AMF. PGPR also support a robust plant immune system.

Crop type, rotation and pesticide use all affect the activity of such microbes, so careful selection and use is required. PGPR in particular requires careful selection and blending to suit crop type, unlike other bacterial products, which claim beneficial effects from broad and generalist mixes of bacterial species, it adds.

North Lincolnshire-based fertiliser importer Thomas Bell & Sons (322) is launching N-Shield slow-release nitrogen fertilisers at Cereals 2019, using what is claimed to be the most effective urease inhibitor available, Limus, from BASF.

This novel urease inhibitor, which has been proven to reduce nitrogen loss by as much as 98%, uses two active ingredients to block active sites of soil urease enzymes.

Applying Limus Pro to granular urea minimises volatilisation, to comply with the government’s Code of Good Agricultural Practice for Reducing Ammonia Emissions. Reduced volatilisation losses also allow more flexible nitrogen timings, while storage time and transport flexibility are improved for a wide range of temperatures and humidity.

FLEXIBLE NITROGEN

Good soil health and structure are the basis for any successful crop, and it is a hotter topic than ever since the launch of the government’s 25-year environment plan last year.

Defra has said it will fund the creation of meaningful metrics to assess soil improvements, and cost-effective and innovative ways to monitor soil at farm and national levels.

According to Defra secretary Michael Gove, some areas in the UK are only 30-40 years away from what he describes as “the fundamental eradication of soil fertility.”

DEFRA ON SOILS

The 10th anniversary of the Cereals Challenge – which was designed to encourage a new generation of farmers and agronomists into the industry – will see students from Writtle

University College, Newcastle University, Royal Agricultural University, Riseholme College and Harper Adams University competing to grow the best virtual crop of spring barley to

manage problematic blackgrass. You can find out who has

MACHINERY

Could new kit kick-start productivity gains on your farm?

High-output Mazzotti self-propelled sprayers from John Deere

ENER

C ereals 2019 showcases a host of new machinery and some new names – including

Mazzotti self-propelled sprayers making their UK debut with John Deere (631) following the Italian firm’s acquisition in summer 2017.

On show will be a 175hp MAF 3580 3,750-litre model with 24m boom, alongside a 300hp MAF 6240 6,600-litre machine with 36m boom. The sprayers feature Powertech engines, four-wheel steer, crab steer and high clearance up to 1,700mm.

Also new to the UK is Ukraine’s Lozova Machinery (1022), offering its Ducat-5 disc 5.25m harrow, with five roller options – tooth, pack ring, double U-shaped, rubber and cage – to suit soil type and farming conditions. Cereals 2019 visitors can evaluate the smaller Ducat-3 in the Working Demonstration Area.

Sprayer maker Berthoud (702) is launching its three-arm folding B3 Axiale Boom, which folds safely within the length of the machine to ease transport and storage. Boom widths include 24m, 27m, 28m, 30m, 32m and 33m. Axiale booms achieve superior stability thanks to a low centre of gravity of the central pivot suspension.

Amazone (751) will show the latest expansion of its seeder range – the Cirrus 03-2CC Double-Shoot – in hydraulic folding 4m and 6m trailed options. Its second distribution head and coulter system allows two seed types to be sown concurrently, or fertiliser

application directly into the seed-bed without seed contact.

The firm’s Centaya drill combination is also now available in a passive format. Originally designed to fit 01-generation rotary cultivators via QuickLink, growers who do not need pto-driven soil tillage can now mount the Centaya 3000 Super on to the new CombiDisc 3000 for seed-bed preparation post plough, or as part of conservation tillage.

Cereals 2019 also sees Amazone introduce FlowCheck monitoring of shutter output on all hydraulically driven ZA-TS mounted spreaders. Although hopper sieves are standard, blockages can still occur, so FlowCheck uses hydraulic system sensors for right and left sides to constantly monitor for blockages and empty running.

New from Hardi (819) is the updated Navigator trailed sprayer, with new SmartCom electronic platform and freshly designed WorkZone, with 3,000-, 4,500-, 5,000- and 6,000-litre options and booms from 18m to 39m. Hardi’s SmartLink cable means service staff can update the sprayer, diagnose

Machinery to boost productivityWhere better to compare machinery options than Cereals 2019?

errors and add features from Hardi’s ServiceTool.

Sands Agricultural Machinery (813) is launching negative incline on its VG boom to dramatically increase the time the boom is at the desired target height, plus E-Taps, an in-house-designed electronic control system for ease of use, with manual override enabling continued working in the unlikely event of a problem. Auto-filling, spraying and washing out are all at the touch of a button, in-cab or by the induction hopper.

Househam (800) is launching a customised product support package to reassure customers of long-term care in an uncertain

agricultural climate. With continuity of parts and maintenance, the five-year package will help boost productivity and cut costs, says managing director Robert Willey.

Agricast (1035) is introducing its new range of bolt-on assemblies for disc harrows and presses, as well as showcasing its 24in, eight-spoke High Strength Wheel, which it says is stronger and significantly cheaper than comparable wheels; and its Press Roll Ring, offering greater durability and enhanced poor weather performance at a lower cost than Simba’s original DD design.
