Happy New Year! Wow, what a remarkable and historic start to the new basketball season and it’s my dream that 2020 is filled with many new memories that we can all share together! The team has been hard at work on the court and in the community and your enthusiasm and loyalty truly fuels our entire organization.

On a personal note, I want to acknowledge our passionate leader and team owner, Mark Cuban, on a monumental milestone. Mark purchased the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 4, 2000, and this year marks his 20th anniversary!

Some people might not realize that Mark was once just a fan like many of us. He had the courage to dream – and believe – of someday creating an NBA game environment that was driven to serve the fans first! He’s accomplished that, along with countless successful seasons, and also led us to the organization’s first and only NBA title.

Happy anniversary, Mark, and thank you for all you’ve done for the Mavericks and this city!

Hello, 2020! Let’s be rowdy, proud and loud! We are Dallas Mavericks!

Sincerely,

Cynt Marshall, CEO of the Dallas Mavericks

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP BY BOBBY KARALLA / @BOBBYKARALLA

The Mavericks have already certainly exceeded even some of the most optimistic expectations this season, but they're not the only team in American Airlines Center to outperform what fans and experts alike predicted.

The Charlotte Hornets have been one of the league's more pleasant surprises in 2019-20. After losing franchise cornerstone Kemba Walker in free agency this season, it could have been easy for the Hornets to completely. But instead, they've hardly missed a beat. As of Christmas, they were just one game out of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.

Filling in for Walker has been Devonte' Graham, one of the breakout players of the season. Graham, a second-year point guard, has already solidified himself as one of the most dangerous threats from beyond the arc, converting better than 40 percent of his long-range shots on more than nine attempts per game.

He was a four-year standout for the University of Kansas, so there was certainly reason to believe that he'd be an impact pro. At the time, it seemed strange that such an accomplished player would fall so far on draft night, something he had in common with the player drafted immediately before him. That would be Mavs point guard Jalen Brunson, who less than two years into his career has already emerged as one of the steals of the 2018 Draft.

Charlotte isn't completely rebuilding,

but the Hornets are definitely getting younger. Fellow young players like Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges, and PJ Washington join Graham in the starting lineup for a Hornets team that has consistently found ways to win close games. With a supporting cast of veterans like Cody Zeller, Nic Batum, and Marvin Williams, it's no surprise why.

In order to win the second game of this pivotal six-game homestand, the Mavs will need to find a way to contain Graham first, and then try to limit the other impressive prospects on the roster. I'm not sure who out there pegged this game as a matchup of two of the most surprising teams in the league, but I'm not complaining. This should be a great game.

Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson was so effective during his career at Villanova that The Sporting News recently named him as their college basketball Athlete of The Decade for the 2010s.

In typical fashion, Brunson was humbled by the award and vows that it will only make him work even harder in the Mavs’ quest to advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

“I just want to keep doing the same thing I was doing, keep having the same approach to the game that I’ve always had and just trust myself,” Brunson said. “Trust that I worked really hard in the offseason and have not lacked confidence.

“Just trust in everything I do and just play my game.”

The other players on The Sporting News all-decade team are Kentucky center Anthony Davis, Duke forward Zion Williamson, Creighton forward Doug McDermott and Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier.

For Brunson, the Sporting News award is sort of a reminder to him that he should have been selected higher in the 2018 NBA Draft. The Mavs nabbed Brunson in the second round with the No. 33 overall pick after he was the NCAA National Player of the Year after he led Villanova to two national titles during a three-year span.

Brunson played three seasons at Villanova, played 116 games, started 115 of them and led the Wildcats to a 103-13 record, including a sparkling 13-1 worksheet in the NCAA tournament.

“No matter where I went in the draft my mindset wouldn’t have changed, the chip on my shoulders wouldn’t have changed, my work ethics wouldn’t have changed,” Brunson said. “No matter where I got drafted we were all rookies last year and we all had to prove ourselves.

“I think I proved myself a little bit (last season with the Mavs). But I still think I have much to prove on and much to get better at.”
