About Marlborough DayThe annual Marlborough Day Festival is held each year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. The festival is a not for profit event held in celebration of our town, community, its people, its rich diversity, and its history. The Marlborough Day Committee serves as the Upper Marlboro Recreation Council for Prince George’s County Park and Planning. The committee is composed of both current and former residents of Upper Marlboro, as well as others who simply love the town. The committee works with various Prince George’s County groups and sponsors to plan, develop and coordinate Marlborough Day festivities. Members from the following Prince George’s

County groups provide support to the Marlborough Day Committee: Prince George’s County Police and Sheriff’s Office, the Town of Upper Marlboro, and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.Consider adding your name to the list of volunteers that will plan next year’s Marlborough Day Celebration. If you would like to join a great group of volunteers, or have suggestions on how we can improve, call 301-952-9575 or e-mail us at [email protected] .

Grand Marshalls: 4-H Youth Development of Prince George’s County4-H is the largest youth organization in the United States with over 7 million participants. 4-H is best identified by its green four-leaf clover with an H on each leaf. The four Hs on the emblem stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.

The Prince George’s County 4-H Youth Development Program is the youth development program of University of Maryland Extension. The program has a variety of delivery modes based on a volunteer effort of both adults and teens. Youth may participate in special interest groups, after-school programs, or organized community clubs in various subject areas such as STEM related activities including Robotics and Adventures in Science, Animal Science and Outdoor Education, Healthy Living, Camping, and Civic Engagement and Community Service. Programs are focused on creating opportunities for youth to develop the Essential Elements necessary to help youth become competent, caring adults. These elements are: Mastery, Belonging, Generosity and Independence. These opportunities are offered through planned hands-on activities, small group work, community events and competitive activities. Together 4-H members and volunteers participate in fun, hands-on, research-based activities supported by a national Extension system.

Special Interest Groups

4-H Special Interest Groups or Short Term Programs are defined as groups of youth meeting for a series of defined learning experiences, usually specific in subject content and with at least six hours of instruction and pariticipation. Examples of such programs includes, Adventures in Science, held on the University of Maryland campus or Youth Garderning programs helds in the spring and summer.

Afterschool Programs

4-H community clubs offer experiential learning opportunities to develop and practice skills through enrollment in 4-H projects, community service, and club events and activities. Clubs meet regularly (usually monthly)with a minimum of 5 members. Clubs have no limit: some may have 40 or more members! These clubs have bylaws and officers and meet during out-of-school time.

Military 4-H Clubs

4-H clubs are organized by the Armed Forces, often on military installations, and principally for military dependents. In Prince George’s County, there is a 4-H program at Joint Base Andrews.

All of these open up new and exciting opportunities for both youth and volunteers to:

Enhance leadership skillsImprove communication skillsMeet and make new friends Become involved in their communitiesImprove personal growth and developmentMost importantly, HAVE FUN!!!!

Who Can Join?

Girls and boys ages 5-18; 5-7 year olds are called Clover members and participate in non-competitive programs to learn about the many different aspects of 4-H. At age 8, a youth can become a “regular” 4-H member, enroll in projects and participate in competitive county and state events.

For more information about 4-H, including ways in which businesses can help to sponsor 4-H, please contact the 4-H staff via email:

Lisa Edwards, Faculty Extension Assistant, [email protected] Pamela Mack, Administrative Assistant, [email protected]

You might have noticed that one of the Marlborough Day regulars isn’t with us today. Henry Becker is a long time member of the Marlborough Day Committee; so long that everyone I asked could only tell me he was here since before they were. Even if you don’t know him by name, you’d probably recognize him by his

impressive mustache. We know him because he’s made sure our signs get put up and that the volunteers get fed during our festival. Henry had planned to be stepping down this year, and for this to be the last Marlborough Day that he helped to organize and run. He seemed a little bit guilty, especially as he hasn’t been showing up to our meetings much this year (due to us scheduling them

so they conflicted with his bowling night). Unfortunately, Henry recently found out that he had a conflict today – because he’s receiving an award for his 60 years as an electrician.Even though Marlborough Day only comes around once a year, this honor only comes around once every sixty years, so we told him to go and get his award and the honor that he deserves. We’d also like to thank him for his many tireless hours (and the hours of his children and grand children that he’d sometimes rope in) that he has contributed to our community.Thank you, Henry.
