2017 OUTINGS PLANNING MEETING

When: January 17th (Tuesday) Time: 6:45 PM-8:00 PM

Where: To Be Determined

Please RSVP: [email protected] I'll be in contact with those who RSVP as to the location. Also, watch for an email notice, check the club's website and an announcement will be made during the January club meeting. Rick Diffley, Outings Chair

PREZ SEZ By: Claude Kistler

Our deadline for the January Barbless preceded our Annual Holiday Party so my thanks in advance to the many members, spouses and friends who have volunteered to help Carla Ferguson and Linda Howe plan and execute another wonderful Christmas dinner. As we head into January, your board and committee chairs are lining up education, outings, the conservation raffle, fly tying and the Fly School classes, events and activities for the remainder of our year. Look to this issue and future issues of the Barbless as well as email announcements regarding these activities and please note the various sign-up deadlines. Lastly, of great importance is our upcoming March Conservation and Education Raffle. Please join Conservation Chair, Miguel Ferrera and his committee as they plan for this upcoming fundraiser. We urge all members to support the raffle with your donations and, of course, through the purchase of raffle tickets. We encourage our fly school registrants as well as all members to attend this event for a chance to pick up fly fishing items and equipment for the mere price of a few raffle tickets. Also, this is a great chance to try to win one or two of the incredible trips offered by members and some of our area fly shops. These are great opportunities to meet, mingle and learn from the best and brightest of our club. Please donate, purchase raffle tickets and join us at our March meeting in support this fun event.

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and wish you all a Happy New Year.

If you received duplicate or replacement fly fishing gear for Christmas, please remember our March Conservation and Education Raffle.

ALL DONATIONS ARE APPRECIATED.

CONSERVATION CORNER By: Miguel Ferrera, Chairman

CONSERVATION AND EDUCATION RAFFLE A new year has begun and I’m already looking forward to spring fishing. If you have any fly fishing items that are no longer being used, please consider donating them to the SFFC Conservation and Education Raffle coming up March 8

th. Drop off locations to be announced.

SPOKANE RIVER FORUM If you haven’t visited the Spokane River Forum website, you are missing out on a lot of good information about the Spokane River and its tributaries. They posted a video on Latah/Hagman Creek that I found very interesting (www.spokaneriver.net).

INVASIVE SPECIES Just a heads up for SFFC members fishing the Big Sky State! Montana Governor Steve Bullock issued an executive order declaring a statewide natural resource emergency for Montana water bodies due to the detection of the larvae of invasive aquatic mussels at Tibet Reservoir, and suspected detections at Canyon Ferry Reservoir and the Milk and Missouri Rivers. The order will free up 750,000 in emergency state funds, and also creates an interagency rapid response team to address the threat. In other parts of the country, such as the Midwest, mussel populations have impaired hydroelectric, municipal, and agricultural water infrastructure and also impacted fisheries by turning lakes sterile.

JUST A REMINDER

Intermediate Fly Tying begins on January 4th. Classes, which will begin at 6:00 PM, will be held at the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council Building on N. Market Street.

Beginning Fly Tying classes begin on January 7th at 9:00 AM. Classes will be held at Lilac Lanes Bowling Alley at the corner of Nevada and Magnesium

SFF 2017 FLY FISHING SCHOOL By: Claude Kistler and Jodi Fitts

Just a quick reminder that our Fly Fishing School begins on February 16th. Our ad campaign in the Spokesman Review began in mid-December and we anticipate high enrollments from non-club members. Remember that current members and their spouses/families get a great deal on this class ($75) with the membership discount. Because we must limit enrollment, please enroll soon and take advantage of this fantastic once-a-year learning opportunity. Please contact Claude at 509-747-2268.

LOOKING AHEAD TO FEBRUARY SKIP AND CAROL MORRIS FEBRUARY 8TH AT 7:00 PM

Skip Morris will be presenting “Creeks” through a mix of entertainment and useful information. In this PowerPoint Presentation, Skip explores the subject of creeks (small streams) and their fish. The creeks are divided into types: riffle creeks, meadow creeks, and tiny spring creeks. Tackle, techniques, and flies are discussed.

Carol Ann Morris will give a presentation on Fishing Photography. Carol is a photographer, videographer, and illustrator (watercolor, pen and ink, pencil) who works with Skip on his books, magazine articles, and instructional videos. Her photographs and illustrations have appeared, separate from Skip's work, in Gray's Sporting Journal, the Yale Angler's Journal, and Fly Fishing & Tying Journal. Carol has presented her PowerPoint presentation titled "Fly Fishing Photography 101: How to Capture What You See" at fly clubs and sportsman's shows around the US and Canada. There will also be a tying session at the Wildlife Council for SFF club members only. It will be on February 8th, from 1:00 PM– 4:00 PM. Cost for the tie along will be $10 per person.

SPOKANE FLY FISHERS FLY AUCTION 2016 By: Rick Newman and Claude Kistler

Claude and I volunteered to co-chair the 2016 Fly Auction; neither of us having done it before. It wasn’t difficult and I recommend others stepping up for other activities. Linda and Fred Howe have both had extensive experience running and organizing it and were very helpful in providing direction and access to documents and printed materials from previous auctions. We also had a pleasant group of folks that helped us out prior to and during the event. Spokane Fly Fishers has a lot of members ready to help out when needed.

Not all of the action for auction takes place on the night of the auction. There is advertising, volunteers to roundup, kitchen staff to wrangle, confirming our funny and talented Auctioneer Rich Butterfield, pre-registering and re-packaging fly donations. We tried something new this year. Some, but not many of you, are familiar with the considerable amount of fly tying materials that have been donated to the club or somehow collected and infrequently used. Mike Keegan and Miguel Ferrera showed up at my house the Saturday before the event and went through a few (14) boxes of materials so that these items could be shared and raise some money by their sales. Lessons were learned as to how we might redo this in the future and if folks have some ideas on how we might better share these items, we are open to suggestions. In addition, Mike, Miguel and I went through the already donated flies and fly boxes to label and register them. The evening of the event folks showed up at

4:00 PM to prepare for the auction and the last of us left at 10:00 PM. Everyone was a pleas-ure to work with and did a great job of making the event a success. Mike Keegan did a lot of work to pre-register the flies and then sent me a file so I could add additional flies and note unused numbers. I did my work on a newer computer than Mike and unfortunately my newer software was not compatible with his when it came time to run the event. I would like to apol-ogize to Mike whose efforts were and are appreciated. Sorry about the confusion Mike! We had 128 items to auction, donated by about 45 generous members who either tied or purchased the items for the auction. My initial count of the monies collected was over $3,000. That number does not reflect the total sales less expenses. I will let Joe Papenleur provide that total. I would like to thank everyone that purchased flies and tying materials. I hope that they bring you good luck and pleasant times fishing. Our club is very fortunate to have a quality group of members that provide donations and spend their money to support our other functions and events through their generosity. I am open to suggestions as to how we can improve our auction and fundraising events. Please contact me, Rick Newman, Claude Kistler or any other board member to share your ideas. You can also send an email to [email protected].

BOOK OF THE MONTH By; Larry Ray, Librarian

Tying Season. Several of you have asked me for references to tying manuals as we move into winter and fly tying, with fishing mostly in our dreams and anticipations. With over a third of the volumes in our collection either tying manuals or containing tying instructions that relate to other subjects, we have many choices. Rather than attempt to review them all and write more on materials that have already been described, I am providing you references to past Barbless Flyer

reviews on such volumes. Accordingly, those shown are listed under the Barbless Flyer issues in which they are discussed. I have noted the class of tyer for which they are appropriate with a few other, hopefully, helpful notations. If you don’t have the Barbless issues shown in your own collection, you can call them up by going through the SFF website. Simply enter spokaneflyfishers.com, click on the Barbless Flyer entry in the column of choices, and select the issue from the yearly index shown. Rick Newman has made this simple enough for me to do it, and if I can do it… Check these out and prepare for a winter, or maybe a tying class, of tying for your tying enjoyment. BE AN OUTINGS HOST IN 2017 BY: Rick Diffley

First, a BIG thank you to those who have been an outings host! Second, how many of you thought about being a host, but felt it was too much work; or, felt that it was someone else’s job? Finally, here’s the truth: In 2016, numerous outings were cancelled because we didn’t have a host. I’ll be sharing parts of the club’s guidelines for being a host to give members an idea of what is involved. Here is part 1 of 3.

“GUIDELINES FOR HOSTING AN OUTING” Mission Statement: “No Angler Left Behind”

The Outings Committee, the SFFC Board and hosts genuinely care about each member’s experience during an outing and are dedicated that the experience be productive, meaningful and enjoyable for everyone. While we cannot guarantee everyone will catch fish, we will ensure every member feels welcomed, supported and has a positive experience.

HOST RESPONSIBILITIES

Prior to the outing:

With the help of the Outings Chair, prepare an article for the “Barbless Flyer” the month before the outing: Directions to the outing and/or camp site. Discuss equipment and flies (Ex: Flies to use, sizes & colors. Floating line and/or

sinking line. Leader 3x-5x. Tippet: Mono or Fluorocarbon 3x-6x.). Note in the newsletter if a meal is planned. If no food is being provided state that

the event is BYO/DIY (Bring Your Own/Do It Yourself).

If you plan on providing food, check with President and Treasurer about available funds and what food and/or beverage you have in mind to submit for

reimbursement.

Cooking Equipment and Supplies: SFF Club provides salt, pepper, napkins, plastic dinnerware, cups, grill, propane tank, ice chest, etc.

First Aid Kit and SFF Club Banner must be picked up for all overnight outings.

For the club meeting prior to the outing, contact the club president. Plan on making a brief 2-3 minute presentation regarding the outing.

Get the signup sheet for the outing, along with waiver forms and emergency contact forms.

Question? Contact Outings Chair Rick Diffley at [email protected].
