Re: Call for Nominations: 2017-2018 Year-End Awards
I am pleased to initiate the nominating process for the annual year-end awards which will be presented on
Thursday, May 3, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please hold this date on your calendars.
The awards ceremony will honor outstanding members of the Rutgers community selected by their
colleagues for exceptional contributions to teaching, research, or public service through a program of five
awards. For each award, the recipient receives a commemorative certificate and an honorarium.
The Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching, up to 5 awards, $1,000 honorarium
(tenured faculty only)
The Board of Trustees Award for Excellence in Research, up to 5 awards, $1,000 honorarium
(tenured faculty only)
The Scholar-Teacher Award, up to 5 awards, $1,000 honorarium (tenured faculty only)
The Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching, up to 5 awards, $1,000 honorarium
(non-tenure track, full-time faculty only)
The Rutgers College Class of 1962 Presidential Public Service Award, up to 2 awards,
$2,500 honorarium (faculty, staff, students)
The Ernest E. McMahon Class of 1930 Award, 1 award, $1,000 honorarium (faculty, staff,
students)
Please Note: The nomination process has been streamlined; if you wish to re-nominate a previously
nominated candidate, you may update the cover letter and submit materials from the previous year’s
packet.
Students and staff members as well as faculty members are eligible for the Rutgers College Class
of 1962 Presidential Public Service Award and the Ernest E. McMahon Class of 1930 Award. I
particularly encourage the nomination of students and staff for these two public service
awards.
Individuals may receive one award in each of the relevant award categories during their service at
Rutgers, and should not be nominated in a category in which they already have received an
award. A list of individuals who received awards in previous years is enclosed.
For the teaching, research, and scholar-teacher awards, nomination packets must be reviewed and
approved by the candidate's department head/chair, dean/director, and chancellor, and submitted by the
chancellor to my office. These nominations will be reviewed by University-wide faculty committees, who
will submit their recommendations to me and to the President.
Students, staff, faculty members, and recognized student or staff organizations are eligible to be
nominated for the Rutgers College Class of 1962 Presidential Public Service Award. Nominations
may be submitted by staff, faculty, and administrators. Nomination packets must be reviewed and
approved by the candidate's department head/chair, dean/director, and chancellor, and submitted by the
chancellor to my office.
The Ernest E. McMahon Class of 1930 Award also has a separate and distinct nominating process that
does not require departmental or decanal approval of nominations.
Please initiate the nominating process among your units and department heads, as appropriate. All faculty
members, staff members, and student leaders should be made aware of the appropriate awards programs
and encouraged to submit nominations in the relevant categories.
Nomination forms for each of the award categories are enclosed. These forms provide brief descriptions
of the awards and instructions for completing and submitting the nomination packet.
Please remind your units and departments in the coming months that the deadline date for receipt of the
nominating packets is January 15, 2018. All nominating packets (in a single pdf file) should be sent to
Dr. Angela Mullis ([email protected]).
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Angela Mullis ([email protected]/848-932-8068) of
my office who coordinates this process.

FACULTY SCHOLAR-TEACHER AWARD
The Scholar-Teacher Award honors tenured faculty members who have made outstanding synergistic
contributions in research and teaching. Often the most effective faculty members are those who are able
to integrate their teaching with their research, whose research informs and adds excitement to their
teaching, and whose interactions with students in the classroom stimulate and inform their scholarship.
This award will recognize those who make visible the vital link between teaching and scholarship, by
contributing to the scholarship of teaching and by bringing together scholarly and classroom activities.
Through their example, by their efforts in the classroom and their reflection on those efforts, and/or by
their contributions to the literature of teaching and learning, those who are honored add to our knowledge
of a specific discipline and offer a model of how scholarship and love of learning can be transmitted to
students.
