Dear MTSU Fraternity and Sorority Life Community,

Thank you for your support and dedication throughout the 2016-17 academic year. The MTSU Fraternity and Sorority community continues to achieve great things while adding immense value to the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

The purpose of this report is to provide you with a comprehensive glance of the achievements of the past year and statistics about the overall health of the MTSU FSL community. Below are some of our community highlights:

• Over 60 nonprofit organizations benefited from 16,937 hands-on service hours and $111,425.47 raised by our FSL students.

• The All FSL GPA of 3.03 was above the All Student GPA of 2.89.

• 70% of FSL members were involved in a student organization other than their fraternity or sorority with many serving as Student Orientation Assistants, Blue Elite Tour Guides and Student Government Association Senators.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, we will unveil the next Strategic Plan for Fraternity and Sorority Life at MTSU. This plan will guide us into the next five years where it is our hope that we continue to influence our campus in a positive manner and grow our membership to benefit more students. We could not do this without each of you! Thank you to the students, faculty, sta�, advisors, alumni, HQ sta� members and many more who provide countless hours of support to the FSL community.

IFC Information

During the mid-1800’s, men attending institutions of higher education realized the need for learning and moral cultivation that went beyond lessons taught in the classroom. Thus, fraternal organizations were formed with ideals centered on brotherhood, leadership, scholarship, and service. At MTSU, there are 10 fraternities. The Interfraternity Council acts as the self-governing body to these organizations and promotes the valuable opportunities each chapter o�ers.

IFC EVENTS

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES Over 40 fraternity men walked one mile around campus in high heel shoes to raise awareness for domestic violence. A best of heels competition and ra�es were highlights at the event. IFC teamed up with the June Anderson Center for this event.

#ItsOnUS IFC joined the national campaign, “#ItsOnUs” and took the pledge to end sexual assault on college campuses. Their endeavors included holding various pledge drives each semester, encouraging others to take the pledge and to be an active bystander. They also teamed up with athletics to promote the campaign and have continued to promote the ongoing e�ort through social media.

RECRUITMENT The Interfraternity Council has an open structure recruitment process. This means organizations have the opportunity to recruit year-round and extend bids at any time that classes are in session. This system allows chapters and potential members the opportunity to develop stronger relationships before a bid is given or received. MTSU prides itself on having 10 di�erent and unique IFC fraternities. During the 2016-2017 academic year, Alpha Sigma Phi & Lambda Chi Alpha joined our community. 6

NPHC Information

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is the international umbrella organization comprised of the historically African-American Greek letter organizations. This council is commonly referred to as the “Divine Nine.” The National Pan-Hellenic Council at MTSU consists of seven of these organizations. NPHC works to further promote unity, and promotes interaction through forums, meetings and functions.

NPHCEVENTS

STEP SHOW The annual step show, sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, is held every year during Homecoming as a time for Greeks and family members to come celebrate the tradition of stepping. People from all across the state of Tennessee attend this event held the night before the homecoming game in the Murphy Center. This year’s winner was Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

INFORMATIONAL When organizations are looking to conduct Membership Intake, many of them will host an informational meeting in which the criteria for membership is explained. These are usually publicized via flyers on campus. NPHC hosts a general information session about all of its organizations for students who have questions or are unsure about the intake process. This event is held in the fall semester. 8

PRESENTATIONS The New Member Presentation is an important feature of membership within NPHC. These experiences serve as a celebration of an individual becoming a member of the NPHC community but also celebrate the exceptional history and traditions of each organization.

CPH Information

The College Panhellenic Council is the unified, governing and coordinating body of the six National Panhellenic Conference member organizations at MTSU. CPH strives to enhance the development of each chapter and its members through academic growth, social development and leadership opportunities. The College Panhellenic Council upholds the values upon which our organizations were founded and promotes an atmosphere that reflects friendship and sisterhood.

CPHEVENTS

TRICK OR TREAT ON GREEK ROW The College Panhellenic Council held their annual trick-or-treat event on Greek Row. There was participation from the entire FSL community which allowed for more trick-or-treaters than previous years. There were numerous activities such as face painting, balloon darts, and so many more.

EASTER EGG HUNT The College Panhellenic Council held its annual Easter Egg Hunt on President McPhee’s lawn. This event allowed the community to bring their children out to hunt Easter eggs, win prizes, meet President McPhee, and have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny.

RECRUITMENT Formal Recruitment is the best way to meet all six National Panhellenic Conference sororities at MTSU. Recruitment is a weekend long series of events, coordinated by the College Panhellenic Council, where the chapters get to know you, and you get to know the women of each chapter. As soon as the fall semester begins various activities are planned for women participating in recruitment. Women will be placed in small groups with fellow students participating in the recruitment process. This allows women to create bonds and find a support system within the first few days of being on campus. 12

CRASH THE COMMONS

Crash the Commons is an event put on by the fraternity and sorority community that allows new students to team up with their Residence Hall to compete in games and activities. Directly following the games, a large outdoor glow-themed dance party was held. Attendance for this event grows every year!

COMMUNITY SPEAKERS

DAVID STOLLMAN –BUY IN OR GET OUT! FSL hosted David Stollman of CAMPUSPEAK in the Tucker Theatre. He delivered his keynote – Buy In or Get Out! His message discussed our core values —fellowship, service, leadership and scholarship and it challenged members to embrace the best and get rid of the rest. This was a True Blue Event for the FSL community with attendance of 75% required for each chapter. Most chapters hit this percentage or came very close. Chapters felt like it hit points that many members needed to hear.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

GREEK WEEK Members of the fraternity and sorority community came together to give back to the community. Participants helped contribute to several local organizations such as Habitat For Humanity and the MTSU Student Food Pantry. The week concluded with the year’s FSL Awards where chapters and individuals were honored for their hard work.

WE-HAUL We-Haul is a campus wide event where student organizations help move incoming student’s belongings into his or her residence hall. Fraternity and Sorority members spend two days the weekend before classes begin moving belongings, directing tra�c, and making incoming students feel more at home at MTSU.
